A Message from the CTMA President
Ted Callighen, CTMA President.
Educating Educators, Focusing on Closing
the Skilled Trades Gap
AS I WRITE THIS MESSAGE, THE long
winter has finally cleared and spring is
officially here!
The Canadian Tooling & Machining
Association (CTMA) has been very busy
with many initiatives. Our focus on closing
the skilled trades gap is ongoing with
continued funding being approved for our
successful Introductory Trades Training
(ITT) Program, extending it to September
2017. The next intakes will be in place
until September 2017. The program
includes a new Earn While You Learn
component to help companies outside of
the Windsor-Essex region. Congratulations
to the CTMA team and many thanks to
the Ministry of Economic Development,
Employment and Infrastructure (MEDEI)
and the Valiant Training and Development
Center for their support. Flip to page 12 to
read Robert Cattle’s detailed report on this
new development.
I also encourage you to go to page 9
and take a close look at Skilled Workforce
Strategies: Can the Refugee Influx
Aid the Skilled Trades Gap?, an article
that is written by one of our member
companies. It highlights Ontario’s
desperate need for manufacturers and
explores a growing target group that
might hold the answer to filling the
industry’s skilled trades gap.
As part of our efforts to educate the
educators, the CTMA will be hosting
Technology Days, a two-day educational
event from June 14 to15, 2016 in
partnership with Mazak Corporation,
Iscar Tools and Sandvik Coromant.
Technology Days will be held at
the Mazak Canada facility located in
Cambridge, ON. The first day is geared
to help educators provide guidance
and information to their students who
may have the attitude and aptitude for
a machining and/or tooling career. We
feel those who have a direct influence on
high school students’ career choices can
dispel some of the career myths about
the black art of machining, engineering
and manufacturing sector by sharing
experiences and providing real-world
advanced technical information on
the high-tech machine tool industry
that they will learn by attending this
Technology Day. Our goal is to help
educators realize that this career choice
has well-paying jobs and provides a
good future to help address the skilled
trades gap. The second day will have a
more technical focus for those of us who
are already in the trades. Turn to page
17 for more information or visit www.
ctma.com/calendar/ctma-technologydays for details.
In March, the CTMA exhibited at the
FABTECH-Canada show at the Toronto
Congress Center. By all accounts,
this show had very good attendance
and was quite busy overall, especially
during the last ice storm of the season.
The next trade show at which we will
be promoting the capabilities of all
our member companies will be the
Montreal Manufacturing Technology
Show (MMTS) at Place Bonaventure in
Montreal. The show runs from May 16 to
18, 2016.
This April, we held two very wellattended plant tours and dinner meetings.
One took place in Weston, ON at INKAS®
Armored Vehicle Manufacturing. The
other was held in Windsor at CenterLine
(Windsor) Ltd. For tour highlights and
photos, go to page 22.
The CTMA is pleased to host its 18th
Annual Shotgun Golf Tournament on
June 7 at the Pine Knot Golf Club in
Dorchester, ON. Spots are selling out
quickly. For more information, visit www.
ctma.com.
With the retirement of our longtime
bookkeeper Mrs. Corey Brunsveld last
January, we welcome Ms. Jerri Kelly to the
CTMA team. Learn more about Jerri in
the sidebar on this page. Welcome to the
CTMA family, Jerri, and best of luck! ❙❙❙

Skilled Workforce Strategies:
Can the Refugee Influx Aid the Industry’s
Skilled Trades Gap?
When traditional recruiting options have been exhausted, a growing target group might hold the answer
By Victoria Rose, Bolzano Tool & Die Co. Ltd.
espite technological
advancements and
automation within the
industry, some Ontario
manufacturers are
still scrambling to fill
positions. In Windsor,
ON alone, despite an
unemployment rate of 7.2 per
cent, www.indeed.ca lists over 2,300
unfilled jobs, including postings for 159
engineers (69 specific to manufacturing),
64 general labourers (13 specific to
manufacturing), 71 machinists, 22 tool
and die makers and 13 mouldmakers.
To fill positions, employers are getting
creative with their recruitment tactics,
offering referral or sign-on bonuses and
increasing social activities and incentives.
They are also extending their search
to other parts of the country and even
abroad. However, there could already
be a solution within Ontario provided by
Canada’s latest newcomers.
At the time of writing, since November
2015, Canada has welcomed 26,202
refugees who fled Syria, including the
larger cities of Aleppo, Damascus, and
Homs—areas with key manufacturing
centres, including industries and
tradespeople, which North American
manufacturers will find familiar.
Alison Willetts is a program manager
for Employment Services at Lutherwood, a
Waterloo, ON organization that provides
a variety of community services, including
refugee employment support. Of
the refugees her agency has aided over
the past few years, Willetts estimates
that about one quarter of them have a
background in manufacturing. As a part of
their employment assessment, newcomers
are interviewed about their job goals and

previous professional experience, and the
interviewees have listed qualifications as
electricians, quality inspectors, engineers,
project managers, and machinists, as
well as for general labour, packaging,
warehousing, logistics, and research and
development.
Colin Grimmond, pre-employment
coordinator for the Multicultural Council of
Windsor & Essex County (MCC), says he
has found similar professional backgrounds
and has been able to identify welders,
toolmakers and mouldmakers within his
client group.
This is great news for Ontario
businesses, but how long will it take for a
newcomer to enter the workforce?
“We are starting to see a few
Syrian refugees come into our centre
looking for employment,” says Willetts.
She expects to see more over the next
few months as the newcomers adjust
to their surroundings, improve their
English, and feel they are ready to go
back to their careers. Willetts suggests
that the time it takes to settle and learn
English depends on the individual, but
that it could be a minimum of six months,
up to one year, or more. However, she
says that, conversely, the refugees are very
motivated to find jobs and are extremely
thankful for the opportunities they have
been given.
“They really just want to work and give
back.”
Grimmond has had a similar experience.
“The newly arrived refugees . . . are
not mostly at the stage of actively seeking
employment. Nevertheless, certainly closer
to the summer of 2016, there will be
greater interest and activity in this area.”
While most of Grimmond’s clients are
not looking for full-time careers until they
improve their English language skills, he
says “[There] are those who are interested
in part-time or weekend employment
opportunities to gain valuable local
experience as quickly as possible!”
Although the industry may have to wait
some time for these tradespeople to enter
the workforce, it is a worthwhile trade-off
for the benefit that comes from the diverse
backgrounds that international workers
bring.

Jaswinder Bhatti, vice-president of
applications engineering and global
operations at Samco Machinery, and
a board member of the Canadian
Tooling & Machining Association, says
multiculturalism definitely helps business.
The 110-person workforce has employees
representing 40 nations. Multiculturalism
is seen as a great asset to the company,
particularly with the variety of languages
available. “We supply machines to 32 different
countries,” says Bhatti. “The customer
could commission the line anywhere in the
world—if they speak French, then we get
a tech who speaks French. We send them
overseas for installation.”
The employees’ varied backgrounds also
mean they know about different cultures
and areas of business.
“It helps us to understand with quoting,
business, and training,” says Bhatti.
Bhatti says that despite Samco’s
international market, there was no
special recruitment process and the
array of multiculturalism happened
very organically. Regardless of how the
environment was created, the company
continues to focus on people and the
diversity is demonstrated (and celebrated)
by displaying a flag for each nation
represented on the manufacturer’s wall.
Settlement agencies are familiar with
stories of newcomers helping business.
“We hear about the benefit a lot,”
says Willetts. “Companies say they’re
very skilled. They have different training
and perspectives, new ideas and different
ways of thinking,” she says, adding that
employees who have worked in other
countries can help their employer get new
leads. “It’s a great opportunity for global
connections.”
Along with developing global markets,
Grimmond says new Canadians can help
businesses tap into local ‘niche’ markets,
generate greater cultural awareness, assist
in enhancing productivity, creativity,
[and] decision-making through diverse
approaches.
Willetts says that with the need for
workers being so considerable at this
time, employers are eager to tap into
this resource, but they do understand it
will take refugees some time to settle. In
general, though, employers have been
getting in touch to see how they can help.
Colin Grimmond, pre-employment coordinator, and Timpy Aulakh, newcomer settlement program coordinator, review a
client file at the Multicultural Council of Windsor & Essex County.
“Employers are reaching out and saying,
‘I want to help this community.’”
So, how does a manufacturer make a
connection with this growing community?
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
Canada (IRCC) and settlement agencies
have some advice for employers on how to
start building successful relationships with
newcomers, including:
• Inquiring about diversity training or
refugee barriers presentations for staff;
• Offering company/plant tours;
• Creating a scholarship program;
• Donating to supporting agencies or
charities;
• Collecting household items that are
currently in need;
• Working with or donating to a local
private sponsorship group;
• Circulating job postings;
• Helping refugees build or expand their
professional networks; and
• Offering on- or off-site language training.
Willetts even suggests holding a job
fair at a local settlement or employment
services agency. She says clients start
to know that location well and feel
comfortable there, and agency staff can
help support employer efforts; services like
these are provided free-of-charge by many
agencies.
Grimmond says that offering a
transportation stipend can be of benefit
too, especially in areas that lack several
avenues of public transportation. In
addition, Grimmond suggests “identifying
staff ambassadors/mentors who speak other
languages (i.e. Arabic, Chaldean, Farsi, etc.)
to assist in both the interview/hiring and
staff orientation/training processes.”
He also suggests creating a consortium
at any stage of the process to help with
future integration.
“Employers could work with these
agencies to establish a local multistakeholder advisory group for Better
Immigrant Employment Outcomes that
would offer their conclusions to various
levels of government,” he says.
Will one region receive a greater number
of toolmakers or CNC machinists than
another region? Not necessarily. This is one
of the ways a consortium could help provide
feedback to the government. Refugees
are currently settled within communities
that have the proper supports in place to
help with a successful integration, “with
consideration given to whether they
have family members in Canada, as well
as the availability of schools, housing,
language training, etc.,” says Jessica Séguin,
spokesperson and media relations advisor
for IRCC. While part of the integration
is aimed at connecting refugees and
employers, Ontario would benefit from
a more structured placement that brings
much-needed tradespeople to the region.
Until that time and until the skilled trades
gap is no longer an issue, the industry
must strive for flexibility and use current
initiatives that build skilled teams. That
means adding a few key employees, which
many manufacturers have been trying to do
for some time, but there is a growing target
group that may have been overlooked.
Some of the talent that Ontario
manufacturers are so desperately seeking
might already be here. ❙❙❙

Ontario Government
Continues to Support the CTMA’s
Introductory Trades Training Program
By Robert Cattle, CTMA Executive Director
ntario’s Ministry of Economic Development,
Employment and Infrastructure has shown its
continuing support of the CTMA’s innovative
Introductory Trades Training Program. The
CTMA plans on having four more intakes over
this next one-and-a-half year timeframe, resulting
in 100-plus new careers in the machine, tool, die
and mould (MTDM) industries.
The CTMA is also adding a new stream to this program
by outreaching to youth throughout Ontario so that other
areas of the province can participate. It would be difficult to
move the training centre from Windsor, so the association has
decided to offer the program to youth throughout Ontario
(aged 18 to 29 and residing in Ontario) who are interested in
living in Windsor for 42 weeks. The participants in this new
stream called the Earn While You Learn stream will train/work
for 40 hours per week at the training centre, where they will
learn the basics as well as manual machining on mills/lathes,
CNC machining on CNC lathes, and on three, four, and fiveaxis machining centres. They will start at 7:00 a.m. and finish
at 3:30 p.m., working five days a week on real parts with work
orders and deadlines, which will also develop the soft skills side
of the industry.
The program also provides youth participants with a new pair
of safety boots and safety glasses, along with hand tools and a
toolbox to start their new careers, including:
• A rolling cabinet and top box;
• 0-1, 1-2, 2-3” micrometers;
• Digital vernier;

More!
Oh, and did I mention they will earn a starting wage
of $12.00 per hour plus benefits to start?
This is definitely thinking “outside-the-box.” We believe youth
participants will be job-ready and productive when they finish
the program and will be immediate assets to the companies they
begin their careers with.
This Earn While You Learn stream is being added to our regular
Introductory Trades Program, which will continue to support
the MTDM shops in the Windsor-Essex region by supplying
them with youth who have the attitude and aptitude to work
within our industry. Shops participating in the ITT stream will
receive $8,000 to help offset their costs of shop floor training,
while youth participants will be supplied with the same safety
equipment and tools previously listed, six weeks of introductory
training at the training centre and will be paid $12.00 per hour
from the first day of training.
We now have over 30 companies participating in this
program. Here are just a few of their comments and feedback:
• “This program has changed the way we train. Because of the
measuring of progress and outcomes, it has taught us to move
new employees around our shop, so they learn more skills and
machines and become more valuable employees.”
• “The program provides an opportunity for young adults to get
a better understanding of the tool, mould/die trade to help
them decide if this is a formidable career choice. We now have

some eager young apprentices who are committed to the
trade.”
It has been my pleasure to monitor the progress of the many
individuals who have come from all walks of life and see them
grab this opportunity and run with it. I am constantly amazed
at how they progress so rapidly with support, encouragement
and proper training. Here are a few of the comments we have
received from youth participants:
• “Before this program, I was selling computers at Staples. I was
making mediocre money doing a job I hated with no future.
Bills were always missed, I couldn’t do the things for my family
that I wanted to do and dreams of buying a house were
feeling like unreachable tasks. On my first day in class back
in April 2015, I knew I was where I needed to be. Everything
about it felt like it was a perfect fit for me. Now I am fully
employed doing a job I love, where I know I have a very bright
future.”
• “I was living on welfare with my spouse at the time, constantly
looking for employment when none could be found with
my skill sets. I was given advice to contact the EAC, where I
met Debra, and she put me in contact with Mike Ouellette.
I now have a career I’m happy with and I love my job. The
people around me have been so helpful and I could never
have gotten an opportunity like this if it wasn’t for the ITT
program.”
• “This program opened a huge door for me in the tool and
die field. This program allowed me to explore this trade and
it gave me the opportunity to land a full-time job as a general

machinist. I absolutely love my job and I plan on making
a career out of it. This program gave me the opportunity
to do so. I am currently enrolled at St. Clair College as a
general machinist apprentice. Before I started this program,
I was working as a general labourer. I am so glad I made the
decision to apply and accept this training. My future looks as
bright as ever and I would like to thank everyone at the CTMA
for making this possible. Thank you!”
I look forward to updating you on more results from this
program in a future edition of The CTMA View.

Manufacturing Ascent:
Coining Canada’s Best Managed Companies
How a focus on innovation helped two Canadian
companies compete with the best
By Dlane Gilpin
anadian manufacturers
are benefitting from the
low dollar, yet many
recognize it isn’t enough
to sustain their competitive
advantage for the long
haul.
What really sets successful
manufacturers apart is an
ability to navigate an uncertain global
economy while focusing on technology
and innovation.
Case in point: Hibar Systems of
Richmond Hill and Windsor’s CenterLine
(Windsor) Ltd., two exporters that have
gone beyond the dollar and focused on
innovation to sharpen their respective
competitive edges. Both companies have
experienced strong revenue growth and
have invested heavily in innovation and
expanded both at home and abroad, in
part explaining why they have both also
won the coveted Canada’s Best Managed
Companies designation. The award
recognizes privately owned Canadian
businesses that have proven their
consistent success in the marketplace.
Marc Levesque, director of corporate
marketing at CenterLine, appreciates
the soft Canadian dollar but says it’s
no substitute for developing a clear
competitive advantage.
14

Hibar’s management team gathered in front of one of their high-speed machines. From left to right: Sasho Naseski, project management; Roger Lee, controller; Bill Reschke, new product development; Helmut Wagner, manager of mechanical
design; Iain McColl, president and CEO; Steve Mark, vice-president of technical sales; Florence Valenzano, manager of
office operations; Eric Lakien, CFO; and Robert Flack, manager of manufacturing operations.
“The dollar has made us stronger in
relation to non-Canadian competitors,” he
says. “But even when the dollar itself was
strong, we spent a lot of time working to
improve our competitiveness so we can
compete despite the fluctuations.”
CenterLine produces custom
automated machinery and tooling that
is used to produce structural automotive
components. The company recently
released a new line of welding guns that
are aimed at improving their customers’
process efficiency.
“The auto industry is always
changing,” says Levesque. “We need to
remain competitive and innovative so we
can help our customers stay competitive.”
It is a similar story at Hibar, which
designs and builds automated production
equipment including pumps and
dispensers used to manufacture a wide
range of products, from vaccines, to
batteries, to mascara.
“We’re here to help our customers
get products from the laboratory to the
store shelf,” explains Iain McColl, Hibar’s
CEO. “Whatever automated process our
customers need for their products, we
develop it.” Hibar is preparing to release a
new state-of-the-art precision dispensing
pump that is wirelessly programmable—the
first of its kind.
Staying innovative also requires
investing in talent; innovative
organizations encourage employees
to upgrade their skills. For Hibar, this
means investing in apprentices and
skilled trades or helping to pay tuition
for employees who enhance their
capabilities through additional training
or education.
“We’re a mentoring company,” says
McColl. “Whether it’s the skilled trades,
engineering or business disciplines, we
invest in employees who are developing
their skills.” Similarly, CenterLine has a
large apprenticeship program, with about
70 of its employees currently enrolled.
EXPANDING ABROAD
A low dollar certainly has helped set the
stage for Canadian manufacturers to focus
A custom designed automatic filling system for lithium batteries. This system was built by Hibar.
on exporting or expanding into other
countries.
“Some manufacturers focus
domestically or on just the North
American market, but I think they’re
missing out,” says McColl.
Hibar consistently derives over 95
per cent of revenues from exports and
has done business in China for 30 years,
opening their first Chinese subsidiary in
2003. Last year, McColl went to China
multiple times.
“But the travel is necessary,” he says.
“In the Chinese culture, it is not easy to
make a multi-million dollar sale without
first building a relationship face-toface.”
Hibar also notes that strong export
growth along with being recognized as
one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies
has positioned the company for its next
phase of growth. Hibar is now considering
strategic acquisitions as a means to take
the company to the next level.
CenterLine has also expanded
internationally, noting that two-thirds
of its revenue comes from exports.
Levesque says the company has expanded
operations to Mexico, Brazil, India, and
China.
“We follow our customers. As the
automakers expand internationally, so do
we.”
Levesque also has advice for
manufacturers who are looking to expand
abroad.
“Partnership is important. Work with
people who know the marketplace. You
can bring technology, but they provide
marketplace insights and a connection to
the customers.”
BEING THE BEST
Despite the benefit of the exchange
rate, Canadian businesses continue to
face uncertainty. “With many unknowns
surrounding today’s economy, keeping a
close eye on market conditions is critical
for all Canadian businesses, but especially
for privately owned enterprises,” says
Peter Brown, Deloitte’s national coleader of the Best Managed Companies
program.
Winners are flexible, innovative,
forward-thinking, and technologyfocused. Brown credits much of these
businesses’ success to their resilience.
“Best Managed companies identify
and prepare for potential swings in the
market ahead of time,” he says.
This description certainly applies to
CenterLine and Hibar, which are both
weathering a tepid economy to emerge
stronger, more focused on innovation
and exporting.
“Winning means a lot to us,” says
Levesque. “Internally, there’s pride
among our staff that we’ve accomplished
something. With our customers, there’s trust
that we can be relied upon to meet our
commitments. Internationally, our customers
recognize we’re among Canada’s best.”
Michael Beneteau, CEO of CenterLine,
concurs.
“Our participation in the Best
Managed program has helped reinforce
our commitment to our strategic
planning process and recognize
the importance of maintaining our
culture of innovation and continuous
improvement.”
McColl agrees that the recognition
makes a difference both at home and
abroad, and he also credits the network
of Best Managed companies.
“What we’ve gotten the most out of
Best Managed is learning from likeminded
businesses and motivating each other to
do even better,” says McColl.
Mike Runia, the other national coleader of the Best Managed Companies
program, emphasizes the value of
networking with these peers.
“Joining the Best Managed network
provides new winners with a network of
exceptionally successful private companies
that are willing and eager to share insights
and help business owners succeed.”
For companies that are ready to

June 14-15, 2016
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MAZAK
CORPORATION, Iscar Tools and Sandvik Coromant, the Canadian Tooling &
Machining Association (CTMA) is pleased
to be hosting TECHNOLOGY DAYS, a twoday educational event on June 14 and 15,
2016 at the Mazak Canada facility located
in Cambridge, Ontario.
DAY 1: JUNE 14
We are bringing together high school
guidance counsellors and principals,
federal and provincial politicians, and
government representatives to help
them learn about the machine tool
manufacturing industry and how it
contributes to technologically-advanced
manufacturing jobs, how the industry is
looking to encourage and provide career
opportunities for young men and women,
and efforts being made to close the skilled
trades gap.
We will also provide them with
information about the cutting-edge
manufacturing and technology industries
available to students after graduation,
and they will learn about the CTMA’s
Introductory Trades Training program,
through which young people jump-start
their machining and tooling careers while
earning a salary. A complimentary lunch
will be provided and it will be followed by a
round-table discussion.
“We plan to educate the educators—the
event will help them provide guidance and
information to their students who may have
the attitude and aptitude for a machining
and/or tooling career,” says Robert Cattle,
executive director of the CTMA.
“We feel those who have a direct
influence on high school students’ career
choices can dispel some of the career myths
about the machining, engineering and
manufacturing sector by sharing experiences
and providing information they will learn by
attending this Technology Day.”
DAY 2: JUNE 15
The second day will have a more technical
focus and it has been designed specifically for

MEMBER PROFILE
Dilast Tool & Die Ltd.: Celebrating Success,
Expanding its Reach
By Adam Johnston
FOR NEARLY 23 YEARS, DILAST
Tool & Die Ltd. has used its experience,
skills and knowledge to create excellent
stamping dies for the automotive industry.
The company was founded in 1993 in
the municipality of Cambridge, ON, in the
Kitchener-Waterloo region. Founded by
four tool and die makers looking to make
an impact within the industry, Dilast Tool
& Die has changed and evolved over the
years. Of the original four owners, one
remains at the helm, along with current
operations manager, Denny Nedeljkovich.
Despite the changes, Dilast Tool & Die
continues to grow. The company added
on to its plant over a year ago, expanding
the 12,500-square-foot building by an
additional 10,500 square feet.
The services provided by Dilast Tool
& Die match the company’s current
operations and extend into their future
vision, as they look to expand into other
avenues. Currently, Dilast specializes
in high-quality progressive, custom,
compound, and transfer dies for the
automotive industry, but the company
is looking to expand its reach into
production. Dilast recently added a 5-axis
laser, which will help diversify its business.
“Three-dimensional laser cutting was
hard to find,” says Nedeljkovich, adding
that by including a 5-axis laser machine
in its operations, the company could
capitalize on the 3-D laser market within
Dilast’s newest press addition, a 220-ton SEYI variable
speed (0-72 strokes per minute) with full automation
capabilities.

the region because it would cut travel time
for customers who would normally go to
Toronto or Windsor for their cutting needs.
“We want to expand the business
to include more than just dies,” says
Nedeljkovich.
While Dilast Tool & Die is celebrating its
success and is now looking to expand its
business, it does not mean the company
hasn’t seen its fair share of challenges along
the way. One such challenge is a common
one faced by other businesses within the
tool and die industry—finding skilled
tradesmen.
"The industry took a big hit from 2004
to 2010," says Nedeljkovich. “We knew a
lot of companies closed down. We knew
a lot of people got out of the industry and
went into something different.”
The mass exodus of workers starting
in 2008 partially contributed to the skilled
trades gap that many companies are facing
today. Dilast put out ads last year, yet could
not find skilled workers to fill their needs
for everyday operations. Nedeljkovich
suggests the lack of promoting industrial
trades within the education system has also
hampered finding skilled workers.
Despite these challenges, Nedeljkovich is
very optimistic on the future of the industry
Dilast recently added a feed line with a de-coiler that can
handle up to 10,000 pounds. The servo drive feeder can
run up to 36.0” wide material.

as the company looks to remain strong and
successful.
“Dilast will continue to expand
infrastructure to support tooling and
production (lasers and presses),” says
Nedeljkovich, also suggesting that the
company’s engineering department may
expand further within the next year or two.
Recently, Dilast added transfer simulation
to its engineering toolbox. With this new
software, you can see the virtual transfer in
motion and detect any interferences and
correct them right at the design stage,
saving valuable press time.
A proud member of the Canadian Tooling
& Machining Association (CTMA), Dilast
Tool & Die has seen positive benefits since
obtaining membership to the association.
One of the useful benefits that the company
has been grateful for is access to the CTMA’s
training courses, which have already helped
Dilast attract skilled workers.
“By the time they get trained, these
people have the skills and knowledge they
need to be successful," says Nedeljkovich.
Dilast is also incredibly thankful for the
tremendous opportunities that CTMA
membership provides through access
to various events, including a recent
dinner that highlighted key issues and
opportunities, like government incentives to
help grow your company’s operations.
As it makes its way into the future, Dilast
Tool & Die will continue to grow, expand
its reach, and see success in its everyday
operations. ❙❙❙

TOOLS OF THE TRADE
NEW MAZAK TOOLTECH STORES BIG
TOOLS IN A SMALL SPACE
Mazak’s new TOOLTECH compact tool
magazine stores big, heavy and largediameter tools within a very small amount
of required floor space. Plus, special tool
carts and docking stations eliminate the
need for operators to manually lift tools in
and out of the system, so tooling set-ups
are faster, easier and safer.
TOOLTECH accommodates up to
206 tools in the same amount of space
required for a 120-tool chain-type
magazine storage system. This economical
use of space results from the fact that
TOOLTECH efficiently organizes tools
according to their lengths and diameters
and stores them in racks—one type
designated for tools with diameters larger
than 100 mm; the other for diameters
smaller than that size.
With its carts and docking station,
TOOLTECH ensures easy and safe
handling of tools with diameters up to 360
mm, lengths up to 800 mm, and weights
up to 40 kg. Operators simply roll one
of TOOLTECH’s tool carts to where the
shop’s tools are stored, place any needed
tools onto the cart and push it directly
into the storage system’s magazine tooldocking station where the tools load into
racks. A user-friendly touch screen control
panel provides operator convenience and
intuitive system operation.
As a shop’s tooling needs increase,
TOOLTECH’s storage capacity can
expand—to as many as five levels with the
capacity to hold 250 tools—with a simple
extension of its frame at the rear of the
system.

compared with standard holders when
machining complex parts at high cutting
parameters.
The new taper-face toolholders are
designed for use with dual-contact spindle
systems. They use plastic deformation
of the machine spindle to achieve
simultaneous fit of both the taper and
the flange face from the holder to create
a highly rigid connection and prevent
the toolholder from being pulled into the
machine spindle. This results in higher
run-out precision and better machining
accuracy. It also makes it possible for
machinists to use higher machining
parameters for substantial increases in
productivity.
In addition to complex part machining,
the taper-face toolholders excel in
situations involving long tool overhangs,
deep-hole boring and exotic workpiece
materials that magnify cutting forces.
They are available for spindle connections
BT30 TF, BT40 TF, BT50 TF, CAT40 TF
and CAT50 TF in both metric and inch
programs.

Seco has added a new range of taperface toolholders to meet machinists’
increasing needs for higher production
