This has become De Dell Seeds’ new slogan after the much
publicized debates surrounding the sudden death of the honey
bees. De Dell Seeds has been family owned and operated since 1999
and has seen a growth in sales every year since the inception of the
company. They pride themselves on being completely Non-Genetically Modified and have firm beliefs that the genetic modification
of crops is not necessary to grow good crops! The company was
established from the president, Vince Trudell`s belief that farmers
should have right to choose their farming practices and do what is
best for their farm.
The belief that farmers should have the right to choice was also a
major factor in De Dell’s decision to not adopt the controversial
neonicotinoid based seed treatment as their standard seed
treatment. Neonicotinoids are a class of insecticides that have been
the center of attention in the media for a possible link between the
insecticide and sudden death of honey bees. As an alternative De
Dell decided to continue to use only a fungicide as their standard
seed treatment, but offer neonics only to farmers that wanted it. It
is all about choices and alternatives!
Agriculture has adopted a one track mindset where farmers are
constantly looking for a ``quick fix`` to any problems that arise
instead of looking for the root of the problem. Resistance to both
herbicides and pesticides are starting to emerge. The number of
glyphosate resistant weeds are beginning to add up as well as an
increase in the geographical areas they are being found in. This
can be attributed to the excessive use of glyphosate on multiple
crops. Farmers have resorted to tank mixing other chemicals to try
and combat this resistance instead of rotating crops and herbicide
programs as their forefathers had done in the past. Bt resistant corn
rootworm has already been found in the central US Corn Belt. Again
this can be attributed to excessive use of Bt Corn, especially when it
was being used in areas where there wasn’t a big problem with insect
pressure to begin with.
With farmers in mind, De Dell Seeds has been continually testing
and breeding from the newest genetics to bring strong conventional
hybrids to market! While year to year extremes happen, and there
are farm to farm variations, De Dell offers farmers a better deal on
seed corn, healthier livestock, healthier soils, and a healthier bottom
line!

USDA 13 NOVEMBER WASDE REPORT SUPPORTIVE CORN & SOYBEAN FUTURES BUT
BEARISH WHEAT!
On November 8, 2013 the USDA finally released an updated U.S. crop production report after cancelling the 2013 October report due to the U.S. government shutdown.
The markets were anticipating higher yields, production, ending stocks and lower
harvested acres.
The USDA did not disappoint but ending stocks came in lower than expected causing
the hedge funds to add to their net long soybean contracts +97,000 and cover their
net record short corn contracts -200,000 and cause a “short covering rally” sending
nearby corn futures up $0.226/bu (after falling for 2 straight months) and soybean
futures up $0.532/bu. to test resistance at $13.00/bu.
CORN
USDA forecast 13/14 corn production at a record 13,989 billion bushels but a 1.9 million acre reduction in harvested area is more than offset by a 5.1 bpa increase in average yields to 160.4 bpa. Demand was increased by 275 million bushels (feed up
100 and exports up 175) causing ending stocks to increase 32 million bushels from
last month to 1,887 billion bushels but below expectations of 2.03 billion bushels.
The fact that the USDA did not print a 2 billion plus ending stocks number was the
difference between a new low and a rally off of the lows. However, an increase in both
global production to 962.83 mmt and ending stocks up 12.9 to 164.3 mmt will keep a
lid on prices going forward.
SOYBEANS
USDA forecast 13/14 soybean production at 3.258 billion bushels up 109 million bushels as higher yields at 43 up 1.8 bpa more than offsets lower harvested area down 0.7
million acres to 75.7 million. Demand was increased by 110 million bushels (crush up
30 and exports up 80) to increase ending stocks by 20 million to 170 but below expectations at 180 million bushels. The fact that the USDA did not print a 200 million
plus ending stocks number was the difference between new contract lows and a rally
back to resistance at $13.00 as export demand pace remained well ahead of last year.
It will be interesting to see what the December WASDE reports indicate and how they
will impact the markets.
