Suddenly, your radio jumps stations and blares full blast. Your a/c cranks up. And your car’s brakes go to full lock. Just before you come to a complete stop, the steering wheel cranks hard right, driving you into a ditch. What do you do? You thank your lucky stars you weren’t killed and call a tow truck. And an exorcist. So, what happened? As you know, the big news among us owners of FCA cars, formerly known as Mopars, is that our on-board car computer can be hacked. According to the nerds who pulled this off on a Jeep Cherokee, they were actually able to remotely take over the controls for the radio and air conditioning. No big deal, right? They were also able to honk the horn and yank on the driver’s seatbelt. Still not worried? Well, what would you say if the were able to engage or disable the brakes. Take over the steering. Dis-engage the transmission or kill the engine. Yeah, that’s what I thought you’d say. How was this possible, you ask? It has to do with all automakers trying to add value to experience of driving a vehicle by turning it into a smartphone. They do that by installing an entertainment system that is Wi-Fi based. The two “white hat” hackers were hired by “Wired” magazine to research the possibility of remotely taking over a modern vehicle by attacking its cellular connection. This theory has been around for several years now, and, in fact, these guys (and others, from UCSD) have hacked into car computers years ago, including Toyota, Ford and GM systems they say are just as vulnerable. Interestingly, FCA announced a fix, almost the day after this news story broke. It’s a software fix, known to nerds as a “patch”, that prevents your Jeep from being hacked. The fix is available on a thumb drive, or can be downloaded at the dealership, free of charge. Since FCA came up with this fix so quickly, it’s pretty obvious that they’ve known about the possibility for some time, but chose to keep mum until the word got out. You don’t come up with a fix like this overnight. So, is there an upside to this problem? Maybe. Say you’re blasting along in your Viper at a buck 40. A CHP trooper lights you up and gives chase. Yeah, you could outrun him. But wouldn’t it be easier to just pull over, and say “Officer, my car’s been hacked. It wasn’t my fault”. Hey, it could work. -Bob Gough, Y’r ‘umble Ed’tr The Newsletter of the Mopar Club/San Diego www.moparclubsandiego.net Car Show Madness!!! AUG 2015 Cruisin’ Grand Mopar Club Nite, Escondido, Fri July 10 As usual, Mopars over-filled the two city blocks allotted for the marque. And the Club had over two dozen of those spaces occupied by our cars. Among those attending in their vintage or modern Mopars were John Joseph, Doug Mace, Woody Widman, Kurt Bogdan, Tom Ferreira, Larry & Debbie Johnson, Jeff & Julie Walker, Rodger & Jean Webb, Bill Baugh, Steve VanderSchaaf, Leon & Lyndsey Rower (2 cars), Marv Reiser, Cliff Cunningham, Rick & Lynda Bobick, Dave Lancaster, Lee and Marie De Tro, and Dave Russell. JBA Speed Shop 30th Anniversary, Sun, July Clubmember Doug Mace’s ‘71 12 J rolled out a big event as gracious host with Hemi Charger everything free from donuts to dyno pulls. Showing their rides were Cliff Cunningham in his Challenger, Leon Rower in his ‘67 big block Cuda, Bill “HemiCliff ‘s Challenger Boy” with his ‘66 Satellite, and Ed Koehler, whose pal Denny showed their ‘64 Hemi Dodge. The Dodge took a dyno pull, but the rear tires wouldn’t hook to the rollers. Hemiboy demonstrated a couple of burnouts with his new SureHemiboy’s Sure Grip, properly smoking both rear tires finally. J gave him Two Grip burnout Thumbs Up (see photo). Greatest Show On Turf, Sat Aug 1 Leon’s ‘67 Cuda Sponsored by the San Diego Association of Car Clubs, the show was held at the South Clairemont Park in conjunction with the Clairemont Family Day CelebraEd & Denny’s ‘64 tion. Lots of rides for the kiddies, (Hemiboy wanted to ride a pony, but they didn’t buy that he was five years old), a $5 pancake breakfast, vendor booths and trophies for the judged show. Worthy Mopars were shown by Clubmembers Dave Russel, John Joseph, Rick Bobick, Tom Ziarkowski and Bill Baugh. Clubmember Leon Rower decided to show his beautiful De Tomaso Pantera instead of his Cuda. But all Club cars were skunked out of trophy awards, probably the first time that’s happened to John. Not to worry, however, as our strong presence John’s Tom’s ‘67 Cuda Charger was awarded the Club Participation trophy. Main Street America, Embarcadero North Park, Sun July 19 The host Corvette Owner’s Club scheduled their show the day after our own All-American Car Dave’s ‘66 Cuda Show. This meant that only 2 Corvettes attended our event, although the Saturday rain may have kept many of the plastic cars inside. Consequently, Y’r ‘umble Ed’tr chose not to attend their event, so no report. But word has it they also got drenched. So there. Rick’s 5.7 Hemi Dodge ProFile AUG 2015 All-American Car Show XVII... Yeah, we had cars lined up at 0630 waiting to get parked, just as the first of several storms blew in. Along with lots of rain, we also had lots of lightning. In spite of on-off rain, mostly “on”, we had nearly 140 cars attend with very few leaving. In fact, the first car to arrive, a car worthy of a Riddler, was David Lewis in his ‘49 Buick Super. He took Best Of Show. Also in line getting Top 10 Winner Mike Loftus’ ‘64 Falcon Sprint soaked, were two red ‘29 Ford hot rods. The pick up, owned by Charles Tuck, had no side windows. The roadster, owned by Andy Korbacher and wife in the passenger seat, has no top by definition. Charles took a Top 10, JBA Speed Shop sponsored a booth and Andy and his wife took Best Ford.
