New Multicolor® Line Available Introducing FiberMark Naturally
Volume 3 | Number 1 | June 2008 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Introducing FiberMark Naturally Creative™ New Multicolor® Line Available FSC Certification for FiberMark 2 Welcome to the new look of FiberMark. We are very pleased to introduce you to our updated corporate identity. After a thoughtful review in late 2007, we realized that the depth and breadth of products that we provide to a diverse range of markets did not always portray FiberMark as a cohesive whole. So, we went back to our roots as a company founded in the Green Mountain state of Vermont, and we reflected not only on where we have been, but where our company is headed. What resonated with us in speaking with you is that whether we are discussing innovative material solutions or reviewing our environmental responsibility as a manufacturer, FiberMark is Naturally Creative™. That is, we rely on inspiration and imagination when we design the finishes, textures, and color combinations that connote richness, style, and durability. And we can be equally imaginative in ensuring that performance is built into any product that you specify. Moreover, we apply our Yankee ingenuity to ensuring that we are stewards of our resources— not because we have to, but because it is inherently the right thing to do. FiberMark is pleased to introduce a brand new range of lightweight papers for the publishing and packaging markets. The new Multicolor® line combines the best colors and features of our previous Permalin® Colors, Multicolor, and Kivar® 6 product lines with new colors, embossings, and environmental aspects. You will notice a more simplified graphic “F” prominently used in our logo, advertisements, sample cards, and other collateral pieces. We have also updated our colors to a natural palette of soft green and ink blue. Let us know what you think. Multicolor is a colored kraft product line that is available in both 70# and 80# basis weights. With an incredible range of 90 colors— including eight inclusion papers and six parchment looks— designers can create a virtual spectrum of projects. All colors are acid free and are dyed through for good fade resistance and superior wear resistance. A select range of colors is offered with 30% Post Consumer Waste (PCW) fiber. Soon, we will be making certain colors available with the FSC label. Additionally, eight embossing patterns are available to add texture to your design. Multicolor is stocked in large quantities for immediate shipment, and is stocked by many book manufacturers for quick turnaround. Kivar 6 and Permalin Colors stock is still available while supplies last. The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Daring Book for Girls were bound with Multicolor® Raspberry and Turquoise leno embossed stock. June 2008 FiberMark Achieves Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification Made from 100-percent recycled fiber, including 30-percent post-consumer waste, Reprise papers are another example of FiberMark’s dedication to environmental responsibility. FiberMark’s Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification (certificate code SW-COC-003054) is in accordance with FSC standards: FSC-STD-40-007 (Version 1-0) “Sourcing Reclaimed Materials,” FSC-STD-40-004 (Version 2-0) “Chain of Custody Certification” and FSC-STD-40-005 (Version 2-0) “Company Evaluation of FSC Controlled Wood." On March 13, 2008, FiberMark announced it had received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification. Chain-of-custody (CoC) certification is an increasingly important issue in the graphic arts, packaging, publishing and office product industries, driven by customers seeking to align their environmental philosophies with their purchasing practices. FiberMark’s CoC and Controlled Wood Certification verifies the flow of FSC-certified forest products through its supply chain and into its final products, assuring FiberMark customers that the papers they are choosing are made from trees harvested according to strict environmental standards and forest management practices. The majority of FiberMark’s papers are made from renewable wood fiber, and all are elemental and process chlorine free. Many of FiberMark’s cover stocks also have a high percentage of recycled and PCW content. Recently, the company unveiled a line of high-quality environmentally friendly cover papers, branded Reprise®, to provide designers with even more choices for responsible design. 2 | The list of FiberMark products carrying the FSC label is expected to grow over time. “With this certification, we’re offering our customers the assurance of the highest environmental organization,” said Steve Pfistner, Vice President of Safety & Environmental Management at FiberMark. “FiberMark’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in everything we do, from manufacturing processes to environmental policies to product innovations.” F I B E R MA R K R E C E I VE S S U S TA I N A B L E B U S I N E S S AWA R D On May 20, 2008, FiberMark received a Sustainable Business Award from the town of Brattleboro, VT for its efforts to increase energy efficiency, use renewable sources of energy, and reduce global warming emissions. FiberMark began burning up to 100 percent waste vegetable oil in its Brattleboro plant last year as an alternative to #6 fuel oil. "With this switch, FiberMark has dramatically reduced its nitrogen, sulfur and carbon emissions, improving Brattleboro's air quality and allowing the town to achieve one of the goals in its Climate Action Plan, a reduction of at least 10 percent in carbon emissions below 2000 levels," said Paul Cameron, Brattleboro town energy coordinator. However, key challenges that we face in 2008 are significant increases in the cost of raw materials, energy to drive our plants, and in transportation. For example, wood pulp is up 7% and latex is up 8% since January 2008, while natural gas has increased 57% and transportation costs are 10-12% higher, primarily driven by the increasing cost of diesel fuel. While we constantly look for ways to contain these costs, it is important for us to share this essential trend information with you. Our sales team will be working closely with you to keep you informed of these trends. As a result of these cost pressures, it will be necessary to raise prices later this year.
