INTRODUCTION
It is some years since the Sladmore has mounted an exhibition devoted entirely to
nineteenth century animalier sculpture. This is largely because, in recent years, fine
quality casts of these well known sculptures have become increasingly hard to find.
The combination of our own stock with that of the Victor Franses Gallery, who for many
years were based here at 57 Jermyn Street, has allowed us to mount an exhibition of both
depth and quality which we hope does justice to this collectable school of sculpture.
It is gratifying that as we rush into the twenty first century both the appreciation of and
the demand for high quality nineteenth century sculpture is stronger than ever.
We trust that this exhibition and catalogue includes something, both for the discerning
collector and also for those new to this field. In addition to the works illustrated in
this catalogue, further items will also be on display in the gallery, please contact us for
more details.
