ust pick up any newspaper these days and you will see
the headlines: concerns about bisphenol A in plastic,
gender-bending parabens in cosmetics, dangerous
levels of mercury in fish. There is no doubt that we are
exposed to environmental toxins on a huge scale and
that this is causing some serious health problems. The
media may be just catching on to this story, but it’s not
news to Sylvie Beljanski, an advocate of environmental
detoxification who has been speaking on the subject
for years. You could say she was born into it. Her father,
the late French biologist Mirko Beljanski, Ph.D., (19231998) was one of the forefathers of environmental medicine and made substantial breakthroughs in how we
understand the ways in which toxins impact our health
at the DNA level.

Sylvie Beljanski, whose photo graces the cover
of this magazine, was born in the United States during a period of several years in which her parents
lived in New York City, working at New York University under Professor Severo Ochoa, winner of the
Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1959.
Sensitized early on to problems of health and the
environment by her parents’ research, Sylvie has
always been troubled by the narrow-mindedness
of the scientific community on the issue of environmental toxins.
After their research in the United States was
completed, the Beljanskis moved back to France
where Sylvie grew up, studied at the Sorbonne in
Paris and eventually passed the French bar exam.
However, she did not stay in France, instead opting to return to New York. Sylvie was determined
to make her father’s research known in the United
States and, beyond that, to address a concern that
she shares with many people: the health effects of
chemical pollution in our environment that cause
a vast number of people to fall ill every year. She
became very interested in prevention and natural
treatments and products.
Sylvie’s first task was to seriously study the
research of her father who during the 1980s was
one of the first to demonstrate the role of chemical carcinogens and a number of toxic agents in
gene functioning. However, his theory was fiercely
debated. At the time, the accepted idea was that
the DNA held all of the information in a cell and no
exterior influence could alter its messages. Thus
genetic decryption became the sole method of interpreting biology, explaining illnesses and finding
remedies.
Mirko Beljanski worked for more than 25 years
at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, one of the
premier research institutions in the world but also
one of the strongest adherents to the central dogma
of the time, or this notion of the total supremacy of
DNA in biology. But he had another, more subversive
vision. Beljanski showed that actually, a number of
molecules, in particular chemicals, can alter not the
sequence of DNA but its double helical structure,
causing what he termed DNA destabilization, consequentially modifying the messages sent by the
DNA to the cell. He further demonstrated that the
impact of these molecules, toxic or carcinogenic, is
additive and cumulative on the conformation of the
DNA and that this phenomenon is directly related
to the beginning of carcinogenesis, which has been
confirmed in recent work. In very simple terms, he
found that chemicals and carcinogens damage the
DNA structure, which leads to serious disease. The
more frequent the exposure and the longer the duration, the worse the health effects will be.

eljanski looked for natural and nontoxic molecules that could reverse this destabilization
within the DNA, at least in the very early stages, as well as selectively kill only the cells whose
genomes had been destabilized. He identified two
plant extracts, Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria,
but this research was not in the spirit of the time. In
spite of numerous assays showing the molecules’
efficacy and non-toxicity as well as the stories of
patients as illustrious as former French president
François Mitterrand who had success with his
methods, the scientist was persecuted, his research team destroyed, and his laboratory closed.
He died a short time later.
Sylvie was so profoundly shocked by the persecutions to which her father was victim that she
called upon the European Court of Human Rights
for justice. They voted unanimously in Beljanski’s
favor and condemned France for its attitude towards the scientist. In New York, Sylvie founded a
company for natural products called Natural Source
International, Ltd. Her goal was to make her father’s
innovative research known as well as to continue
his research in the United States.
In New York Sylvie contacted Dr. Aaron Katz, a
nationally recognized urology specialist and head
of Columbia University’s Center for Holistic Urology. Katz was interested in Beljanski’s extracts Pao
pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria and their use for
men with prostate issues. Katz and his team decided to verify the plants’ efficacy first on cells in
culture and then in animals to very promising results. The team published an article in the International Journal of Oncology confirming and refining
the anti-cancerous method of action of the Rauwolfia vomitoria extract, and then another article in the
Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology for
the positive findings with the Pao pereira extract.
Due to the success of these preclinical studies,
Katz put the two extracts, which have two different
mechanisms of action, together to see how they
work in tandem for best results.
The Columbia team organized a clinical trial,
which enrolled 30 men with enlarged prostates but
a negative biopsy—meaning they did not yet have
cancer but were at a high risk for it. They had a high
PSA (prostate-specific antigen) and symptoms of
benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Their results
were very encouraging. The final results of this
study have not yet been published, but there can
be no doubt that these extracts can offer great ben-
efits to patients while causing no toxic side effects,
serving to noticeably improve a patient’s quality of
life. The studies on these extracts are ongoing, and
further benefits are being explored.
In the course of his long years of research,
Beljanski, tormented by the harsh side effects of
treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy inflicted on patients, sought ways to stabilize
them. It is common knowledge that most traditional
anti-cancer treatments have a destructive effect on
blood cells, which can be life threatening to the patient as well as necessitate a halt in treatment. To address this problem, Beljanski developed a formula
of biological RNA fragments that not only maintains
normal white-blood-cell and platelet counts during
radiotherapy or chemotherapy, but also preserves
the normal proportions among the various kinds of
white blood cells, notably those that fight infection.
These RNA fragments are totally devoid of secondary effects and act as catalysts for stem cells
in the bone marrow. The most important point is
that they promote only healthy stem-cell division—
that is they act in a selective manner, as evidenced
by the fact that they do not promote the division
of bone-marrow cancer cells. In fact, this selectivity
of action, as already observed with the two plant
extracts that Beljanski developed, is a unique characteristic of all Beljanski’s products. ReaLBuild, as
the RNA fragments are known, has no effect on red
blood cells and in no way prevents the effect of
antimitotics on cancer cells. A second clinical trial,
this time at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) under the direction of Dr. James Grutsch,
was completed with much success. A publication
of the results is in progress.

States and Europe, Sylvie has developed her own
three-pronged approach to optimal health through
detoxification, which she summarizes in the phrase
“Avoid, Remove and Repair.”
The first step is to avoid chemicals when possible by educating yourself about what’s in the
products that you buy. Learn about what chemicals
are harmful, like parabens and phthalates, and then
read labels and choose products that don’t have
these chemicals. According to Sylvie, too often we
forget that the skin is the largest organ for absorption that we have. What you put on your skin gets
absorbed directly into your bloodstream where it
can do a vast amount of damage. Doing something
as simple as switching to chemical- and preservative-free shampoo and soap can save your body
from a lot of adverse effects.
However, it is not always possible to avoid
chemicals, especially since many are not even listed
on labels (Sylvie notes that when you see the word
“fragrance,” you should be worried). The next step
is to remove the harmful molecules through natural
detoxification methods such as gentle chelation,
which helps remove heavy-metal buildup or by taking natural supplements to help support the liver’s
function. These steps are important because toxin
buildup can have significant effects on your physical wellbeing, such as headaches, weakness and
fatigue. Finally, if your health has still not improved,
it’s time to repair, which should involve seeing a
specialist in environmental medicine to develop a
treatment plan that is right for you.
This strategy inspired Sylvie to create a line of
products to help people detoxify in a natural way.
