HOW THE ORANGE PUBLIC
LIBRARY FOUNDATION HELPS
Thanks to your participation in this Gala, the Orange Public Library Foundation
will be making a substantial donation towards the acquisition of eBooks for the
Orange Public Library in the year ahead.
Over the years the Library Foundation has donated more than one million dollars
in cash and in-kind contributions towards the construction and renovation of
the Orange Public Library & History Center. We continue with these efforts, and
additionally have added new donor funding opportunities through the creation
of endowments that, as they grow, will serve as secure and reliable funding
sources for future library needs.
The Library Foundation has provided hundreds of kids and families with free
entertainment at the Annual Summer Family Film Fest, with our screenings of
current, animated feature films. The Fourth Annual Summer Family Film Fest
begins this year in June with a new sponsor, the National Charity League’s
Orange – Villa Park Chapter.
Thanks to a significant donation from The Lloyd E. and Elisabeth H. Klein
Foundation, the Library Foundation will be making a number of substantial
donations to the Orange Public Library for books, film screenings, and other
items specifically for children’s and teens’ collections and programs.
Each year the Library Foundation in partnership with St. Joseph Hospital
Foundation, presents the free money management workshops, It’s Your Money
and It’s Your Estate, to our community. Hundreds have attended and benefitted
from these educational opportunities.
This year the Library Foundation successfully launched the First Annual Winter
Documentary Film Festival. All of our feature-length films were multiple awardwinners, with a common theme of people who overcame obstacles to achieve
their dreams. Attendance was beyond our expectations. This program was made
possible with donations from The Joe MacPherson Foundation, SA Recycling,
and Frank & Shannon Tucker.

CITY OF ORANGE
PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION
Answer your questions.
Expand your horizons.
Discover your world at the Orange Public Library & History Center.
Goal of the Library Legacy Campaign:
To provide funding, in perpetuity, for book collections, music,
DVD’s, technology, and facility needs for Orange’s Public Libraries.
There are many ways to give!
Charitable Gift Annuities: A contract between you and OPLF that will provide you and/or your
named beneficiary with a guaranteed lifetime income in exchange for a charitable gift. Most gift annuity programs do not make the charitable gift amount available until after the annuitant passes away.
Through a partnership with the Orange County Community Foundation, the “charitable gift amount”
can either be directed to support the Orange Public Library Foundation endowment in the future or be
distributed immediately to support current programs and operations.
Pooled Endowment Funds: Generates interest, which is utilized to support key Orange Public Library
initiatives for purchase and preservation of books and materials, children’s programming, and technology.
A donation of $5,000 or more sets up an individually named account that is collectively invested in perpetuity. Two such accounts already exist: One for local history, and one for library books and materials.
Public-Use Computers: Supported at $2,500 apiece, with the donor recognized by name on a special
wall plaque.
Furniture: Tables and chairs throughout the libraries - may be named for $750 to $5,000 apiece, depending on the item. The donor will be recognized by name on a special wall plaque.
Local History Display Cases (4): Located in the Lobby of the Orange Public Library & History Center
and are available for permanent naming recognition at $20,000 apiece. These walnut display cases contain rotating exhibits about Orange’s unique history.
Adopt-A-Stack Endowments: Providing more books, music, and/or DVDs in the subject area of the
donor’s greatest interest. A $25,000 contribution (payable over several years if desired) is recognized
with the donor’s name on a plaque on a library bookcase.
Naming Opportunities: Many are still available at the Orange Public Library & History Center (Main
Library) for major areas within that building. Call us at 714.288.2470 for more information
*Please seek the advice of a competent tax professional before you enter into any gift annuity agreement.

St. Joseph Hospital Foundation (SJHF) has been an invaluable partner with the Orange Public Library Foundation since

Dedicated to the philanthropic support of St. Joseph Hospital since its founding in 1970, SJHF provides that support

Orange Park Acres plays an important part in the history of
the City of Orange. Yet little original source material and interpretive information about that area’s historic past has been
available in Orange Public Library’s local history archives…
until now.
Thanks to the generosity of the Mead Family, the library’s
archives now contain a historical treasure trove of materials
about the area. The area was obtained by the Mead family and
two partners in approximately 1912. Frank F. Mead, Sr. and one
of the partners joined their larger interests in 1928 and brought
water into the area of Santiago Creek near Prospect Avenue.
The valley was planned, planted and named Orange Park
Acres, the part of town long beloved for its more rural lifestyle.
Included in the Meads’ donated collection are: documents;
tract maps; memorabilia; books, pamphlets, and sales brochures; and aerial photos. There are also wonderful photos
of Mead family members.
Frank F. Mead, Jr. and his two sisters purchased 120 acres,
east of Orange Park Acres, in 1952 and referred to it as the
“Day Ranch” after the seller, Orville Day. They developed a
well system that accumulated irrigation water in a central
lake that the three partners built, as the ranch was developed
into citrus. That parcel was subsequently purchased from
the Mead family and developed by Broadmoor Homes into a
lovely City of Orange residential area.
A number of Mead Family members, located throughout
Southern California, recognized the importance of preserving
this unique and priceless documentation of a key part of East
Orange for generations to come. During the past year, they
have donated their original items, or allowed copies to be
made, for Orange Public Library’s archives. Eventually these
materials will be made accessible, free of charge, for use by
researchers and the general public. Photos will also be made
available online, on the library’s local history website (www.
cityoforange.org/localhistory).
The Orange Public Library Foundation presents the 2012 Local History Legacy Award to the Meads for so generously
sharing their family history in a way that provides a lasting
heritage about Orange Park Acres and the “Day Ranch.”
