Make the program Sustainable
Our Sustainable Design Initiatives
CPS Ten Sustainable Design Initiatives
SDI 01 – Storm Water
SDI 06 – Urban Timber
SDI 02 – High Performance Spaces
SDI 07 – Renewable Energy
SDI 03 – Geothermal Energy
SDI 08 – Water Efficiency
SDI 04 – Indoor Air Quality
SDI 09 – Daylight
SDI 05 – Transportation
SDI 10 – Zero Waste Schools
SDI 01 – Storm Water
• Reduce quantity
• Improve quality
• Bring best practices
o Permeable hard-surfaces
o Vegetative green roofs
o Earth treatments
SDI 01 – Storm Water
Construction:
• Rain Gardens installed &
planned
• Green Roofs
o Taft IT HS: 48,000 s.f.
o North Avondale: science roof
o Clark Montessori: intensive
• Cisterns and Rain Barrels are
being studied to capture and reuse
rain water
• Pervious pavement to reduce
run-off installed at Hartwell Elem.
SDI 01 – Storm Water
Community:
• MSD of Greater Cincinnati has awarded
grants to study innovative Storm Water
applications at schools
• MSD has formed a Green Strategies Advisory
Group and CPS serves on that Group
• Weston Solutions has donated time to
architects to study green roof applications
• Rain Garden Alliance and Ready Mix
Concrete Association donate professional
experience
SDI 02 – High Performance Spaces
• Reduce energy consumption in
gyms and cafeterias.
• Apply features such as:
o
o
o
o
Windows.
Electronic controls and sensors.
Heat-reducing roofing.
High-volume/low-speed ceiling
fans.
SDI 03 - Geothermal Energy
• Study and apply geothermal
energy and other high
performance heating and
cooling systems.
SDI 04 – Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
• Better IAQ can
improve both
attendance and
performance scores
• Better IAQ means
healthier students
CPS will be the leader in IAQ for Ohio K-12 Public Schools
by the year 2012
Sustainable Design Initiative #4 - IAQ
• Indoor Air Quality Steering Committee
o Membership includes internal and external stakeholders
• CPS, GBBN, ALLY, and CHD
o Indoor Environmental Quality Management Plan (2010)
o Utilizes EPA Tools for Schools resources
o Participation in Anti-Idling Campaign
SDI 05 - Transportation
• CPS has adopted the
1st anti-idling
program in Ohio
• CPS is working
toward district-wide
Safe Routes to
School, encouraging
safe walking and
biking to school
SDI 06 – Urban Timber
• Recycle harvested timber
from Cincinnati community
parks for cabinetry.
• The wood will also be used
in the district’s careerdevelopment programs for
carpentry and
woodworking.
SDI 06 – Urban Timber
Application:
• Mobile saw mill has been retained by
Cincinnati Parks for sawing
logs at two locations in the county
• Lumber Mill has been retained by
CPS
• Wood will be used in carpentry
programs, and to produce finished
cabinetry and podiums in the schools
• Local jobs, local products
SDI 06 – Urban Timber
Project Progress:
• September 10th, 2008 - Prototype
Unveiled
• Currently, over 130 furniture
units produced: bookcases &
cubbies
• ODNR Grant 2009-2010
o DVD for classroom
o Bookmarks
o Timber Tags
o Paddlefest Kids Expo
o Flyers to engage community
• Prototyping podiums with
students
SDI 07 – Renewable Energy
• Renewable energy sources
include wind and solar
power.
• The technologies lend
themselves to educational
opportunities.
SDI 08 – Water Efficiency
• Reducing the water usage
of our buildings will
benefit the community.
• This initiative considers:
o Storm water reuse
o Policies for water reduction
by equipment and fixtures.
SDI 09 - Daylight
• Daylight improves academic
performance and reduces
electrical power demands for
light.
• Fewer light fixtures reduces
heat generated from lighting
fixtures, therefore offering
additional energy savings.
SDI 10 – Zero Waste Schools
• Expands the existing programs for
recycling and waste reduction to
achieve zero waste status.
• Our ultimate goal:
o Maximize reducing, reusing, recycling
programs; and eliminate unnecessary
waste.
