Rougeau finishes as the top qualifier
Former champion Allie Rougeau
topped the 32nd annual Post-Standard
Women’s Masters leaderboard with a
767 handicap series during qualifying
at Bowl Mor Lanes on Feb. 20.
Rougeau, who won the crown in
2008 and was also the 2007 runner-up,
rolled a career-high 740 scratch series
with games of 216, 235 and 289. It was
her first career 700 series.
Rougeau, 22, got lined up in the middle of her second game and rolled seven
straight strikes to end game two. She
Allie Rougeau
had the front 10 in her third game but left
the 10 pin on her 11th ball, which she spared for 289.
“I actually threw it really good,” Rougeau said. “But I was afraid I
was going to miss that 10 pin.”
Rougeau gave credit to her fiancé, Kris O’Donaghy II, for telling
her what ball to use, the Invasion. The couple got engaged last fall
and is planning a July 23 wedding.
“If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t have bowled this good,”
she said.
Rougeau wasn’t the only bowler to post a career-high score during
qualifying for match play at the Women’s Masters on Feb. 19-20.
Ashley Skinner rolled a career-high 766 series Feb. 20 and finished
as the tournament’s top scratch qualifier. Skinner had games of 287,
232 and 247. In her first game, Skinner was on a roll with 10 straight
strikes but left a split on her 11th ball. She is the No. 2 seed behind
Rougeau.
Pawlick rolls tourney-record 299 game
Left-hander Emilie Pawlick set a
Women’s Masters tournament record
with a 299 game Feb. 20. The old record of 298 was shared by Jennette
Adams (2002) and Margie Chetney
(2011).
After games of 187 and 224, Pawlick said she was looking for a big score
in her third game to qualify for match
play.
Pawlick, 24, went on to deliver 11
consecutive strikes. Her last ball hit
Emilie Pawlick
the pocket high and she was denied a
perfect game with a standing 6-pin. She
finished with a season-high 710 series.
“On 5 and 6, I started off strong and didn’t pay attention to getting
strikes,” Pawlick said. “I didn’t get nervous. Normally, I get nervous,
but I had the front eight when Allie (Rougeau) was going into her
10th frame and watching her distracted me. I didn’t get nervous until
after my last ball.”

Construction starts for Women’s Nationals
by Matt Cannizzaro, USBC communications
During the next five weeks, the Oncenter
will be transformed into a state-of-the-art 48lane bowling facility that will be the home
of the 2011 United States Bowling Congress
Women’s Championships.
On Feb. 21, work crews began bringing in
more than 30 truckloads of materials needed to
construct the venue, which also includes vendor and office space, a squad room, a locker
area and spectator seating.
The finished product will be the biggest
stage in women’s bowling, and the 2011
Women’s Championships is expected to bring
more than 30,000 bowlers to Syracuse during
its 88-day run from April 7-July 3.
The amount of lumber required for the venue is enough to construct at least five threebedroom homes, and more than six miles of
wiring is required to handle the tournament’s
electrical needs.
Memory Lane Spotlight
Hall of Famer
by Jody VanLiew
John Scaia II
How did you get started in bowling? As a pin boy at Solvay
Recreation in 1949.
Bowling idols: Marty Piraino, Greg Griffo and Dan Capucilli
Favorite bowling center: Solvay Recreation
Fondest bowling memories and accomplishments: My son
and I shooting 300 in the same league weeks apart at the Syracuse Bowling Center.
Shooting three 800 series at Solvay Recreation. I have lots of heart-warming memories over the years that are too numerous to mention.
Biggest disappointment: I lost the fifth match of the day in 1975 Post-Standard
Masters tournament resulting in a third place finish. I have finished second three
times in the VanWie Doubles. My partners were Tom Minnegan, Steve Szkolnik
and Gary Cunningham.
Favorite part about bowling: Camaraderie
Least favorite part about bowling: The lack of attention that is given to the bowlers
that have achieved a high level of talent over many years.
Highest average: 218 in 1994
Favorite league: City League and the Post-Standard Classic League
Toughest bowlers you’ve ever faced: Marty Piraino and Dave Brownlee
Toughest team you’ve ever faced: National Cleanway (Jeff Gordon, John Hough,
Bob Hoefer, Mike Tryniski and Dean Distin).
Best teams you’ve ever bowled on: The Raphael’s Restaurant team (myself, Don
Kessler, Greg Griffo, Don Gates, Raphael “Flash” Caloia, Tony Caloia, Dave Hibbard and Don Collins). The Barbagallo’s team (myself, Barry Clute, Gary Cunningham, Joe Creno, Joe Losurdo, Buddy Amidon and Sam Ventura).
I would like to thank John for taking the time for this interview. It was a real treat hear
about John’s amazing hall of fame career and letting our readers get a glimpse of one of
the area’s top competitors. Thank you Mr. Scaia!!

The first piece of the installation process
will be the tournament’s custom scoreboards,
which began Feb. 23. The scoreboards are
comparable to the oversized screens often
found in sports venues and arenas across the
country, but offer a clearer picture thanks to
the latest technology. They feature enhanced
graphics with 4.4 trillion colors and streaming video capabilities and make up the world’s
largest mobile scoreboard of its kind.
The setup also includes a 12 feet by 9 feet,
high-definition video display screen over the
tournament’s traditional Center Aisle.
Construction on the 48 championship lanes
is scheduled to begin Feb. 28.
The 2011 event marks the second time
the tournament will be held in a conventioncenter setting. Prior to last year’s event in El
Paso, Texas, the tournament was contested in
traditional bowling centers when not held at
the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.
(every third year since 1997). The tournament
first was held in 1916, and 2011 will be the
92nd year of competition.
The Women’s Championships returns to
New York state for the first time since 1996. It
previously was held in Syracuse in 1940 and
1954 with 1,185 and 4,538 five-player teams,
respectively.
There still are plenty of prime bowling
times available for the 2011 tournament, but
the March 1 entry deadline is quickly approaching. So far, 5,660 five-player teams are
scheduled to compete in 2011.

Rick Lambrecht defeated Gary Feldman,
247-203, to capture the 2011 Post-Standard Masters crown Feb. 16 at Erie Blvd.
Lanes.
A string of five strikes coupled with two
opens by Feldman propelled Lambrecht to
the title. The Homer right-hander finished
the tournament 8-0 with a 228.5 average,
taking home $2,500.
Lambrecht was making his first championship appearance, but he’s no stranger to
the Masters. He was the tournament’s top
qualifier in 2005 with a 796 series. Lambrecht is also one of the few bowlers to have
won the P-S Masters, the Cortland Masters
and the Auburn Citizen Masters.
Feldman finished 6-2 with a 211.4 average and took home $1,300 for second. His
only two tournament losses were to Lambrecht. Among the Auburn-area friends in
attendance to support Lambrecht and Feldman were Jeff Matty, 2010 champ Lee Burnett, Michael Ryan and Jeff Chalupnicki.
Second-seeded Feldman got to the title
match with a 196-189 win over third-seeded Jeremy Macri, who bowled well under
his 230 match-play average. Macri got past
fourth-seeded Timmy Bacon, 197-185, in
the first match of the stepladder finals.
Macri (7-2) won $900 and finished with a
227.2 average. Bacon (7-2, 212.1) received
$750.

Bud VanderVeer Championship Plaque
As the tournament champion, Rick Lambrecht won the VanderVeer
Plaque in addition to $2,500 and an eagle trophy. The VanderVeer Plaque
is displayed for one year at the home bowling center of the champion.
Win Scheding Award
David Brownlee is the recipient of the Win Scheding Award, given
to the tournament’s high qualifier. Brownlee led the qualifying field of
894 players with a 737 series at AMF Strike N Spare.
Bert Sarno Sr. Award
With a tournament-record 846 series, P.J. Kohanski is the winner of
the Bert Sarno Award, which is given to the high match play series in
the tournament. Kohanski rolled games of 267, 279 and 300 at Flamingo Bowl to break the old record of 833, set in 2009 by Ray Cyr Jr.
Jack Vault was the only other bowler to roll an 800 series (805) in
match play this year.
Award scores
Nine awards were recorded during the tournament, with eight coming in match play. P.J. Kohanski earned two with his 300-846. Jack
Vault rolled an 805 series. There were two other perfect games: Gregg
Cavanaugh and Benny Appleby. Scoring 11-strikes-in-a-row in match
play were Dave Disque (299), Steve Anderson (297) and defending
champ Lee Burnett (299). David Gonzalski rolled a 290 in qualifying.
MASTERS ROUNDUP
Lane Conditions Vary At Venues: After demanding lane
conditions during qualifying at AMF Strike N Spare, match-play competitors found the lanes a bit more forgiving at Flamingo Bowl on Feb.
5-6. There was a total of 43 700 series and two 800 series at Flamingo.
Tournament director Bill Vangel said a variation of the oil pattern
used for the Wednesday Night Men’s League is what was used during
match play at Flamingo.
At Bowl Mor and Lakeview, Vangel said a USBC oil pattern was put
out for bowlers. The highest series at Bowl Mor was a 742 by Benny
Appleby. At Lakeview, Jeremy Macri rolled a 793.
Vangel added there was no specific pattern chosen for the tournament
finals at Erie Blvd. Lanes.
Top Match Play Averages: Jeremy Macri led the final round of
12 with a 230.4 average during three-game match play. Here are the remaining top five averages: Dean Distin (228.5), Rick Lambrecht (227.6),
Tim Lawton (223.7), Andy Melnyk (221.1) and Jim Bero (219.4).
Dramatic Finishes Highlight Match Play: There were a
number of fantastic finishes during match play and Benny Appleby was
on the winning end of two. With the help of a perfect game, Appleby
was able to edge Matt Leskoske, 718-714 at Flamingo. Then at Bowl
Mor, Appleby struck out in the 10th frame to eliminate Ray Cyr Jr.,
651-649.
Fred Sakran Jr. came up with some third-game magic in an elimination match against T.J. Mento. Sakran rolled 10 straight strikes to finish
with a 288 game and win the match 694-648.
Strike N Spare Has New Look: AMF Strike N Spare, the
annual qualifying venue for the Masters, received a few upgrades this
season. The snack bar was moved and remodeled to face the bar area in
a more centrally located spot.
“Now people can see it instead in being hidden around the corner
(near Lane 72),” Strike N Spare manager Brian Wettering said.
The snack bar, called “The Laneside Grill,” is more functional and
efficient. New on the menu is Slush Puppies, Wettering said.
Strike N Spare also has new maskings on the lanes, and coming this
spring are new flat-screen scorers.
Qualifying Draws A Crowd: The number of walk-ins for
qualifying has increased each year since the tournament began accepting
walk-ins in 2003. This year, a tournament-record 270 walk-ins signed up
to qualify. Another 14 bowlers forked over $20 to pay the USBC sanction
fee. To compete in the Masters, bowlers must be USBC certified.
Teenagers Fail To Move On: Two of the youngest match-play
competitors were Michael Suarez and Joe DeMario, both 18. But the
teenagers exited the tournament on the first day. Suarez went 2-2 while
DeMario, of Chittenango, was 1-2. John Kohanski Jr. was the youngest
Masters champion at 20 in 1999.
Scaia Still Tough Competitor: At 74, hall of famer John
Scaia II was the oldest bowler to make match play. The two-time defending Senior Van Wie Doubles champion averaged a respectable
204.4 in his four matches. After opening with two wins, Scaia suffered
two straight losses and was eliminated.

Chetney records 298 in qualifying
Margie Chetney
During qualifying on Feb. 19, Margie Chetney tied a longstanding Masters record with a season-high 298 game. Chetney opened with a solid 242 game then moved to lanes 1-2,
where she chalked up 11 in a row with her husband, Matt,
looking on.
Bowling came to halt as players and spectators made their
way down to lanes 1-2 to watch Chetney’s last ball, which
didn’t deliver the desired result. Chetney left the 4-7 for a 298
game. Chetney led all players Feb. 19 with a season-high 749
series. On the same pair, Courtney Radick ripped off 11 in a
row after a first-frame spare to finish with a 290 game. Radick
finished with a 744 series.

Women’s MASTERS NOTEBOOK
SHELEY RETURNS TO MASTERS: It’s been 19 years since Shelly Sheley finished second to Val
Kotlarz in the finals of the Women’s Masters. But Sheley, who hasn’t bowled in the Masters since 1992,
decided to return this year. Her cousin, Mike Graham, entered her.
“I thought I’d give it a try,” Sheley said.
Sheley, of Oswego, walked away from the sport for nine years after her runner-up finish. During her
lengthy absence, she had two children and has overcome a number of health issues that required 23 surgeries. Although she was disappointed with her score (461 series), Sheley was glad to be back.
“It’s fun,” she said. “I love bowling. I think I’m back for awhile.”
FRIENDS FINISH 1-2: Holly Bucci, making her tournament debut, rolled a career-high 623 scratch
series. With her 93-pin handicap, Bucci led the 11 a.m. squad on Feb. 19 with a 716. But Bucci, of Syracuse, needed to be convinced to bowl in the Masters.
“My friend talked me into it,” Bucci said.
Bucci’s friend is Rosemary Beshures, who also qualified for match play with a 711 handicap series. The
pair finished first and second on the squad.
Hall of famer Carolyn Grund (left) enjoyed her return to the Masters tournament with
the support of her family including granddaughter, Brianne LoVine (center), and
daughter, Sandy LoVine.
GRUND QUALIFIES FOR MATCH PLAY: Hall of famer Carolyn Grund made a smashing return to
Masters bowling by qualifying for match play with a 666 handicap series.
Using a Lane No. 1 bowling ball designed by her son, Richie Sposato, Grund rolled games of 190, 202
and 214 scratch. Rooting her on Feb. 19 were her sons, Richie and Rob Sposato, and her daughter’s family, Sandy, Bill and Brianne LoVine. Sandy LoVine was also on hand when her mother became the first
woman in Syracuse history to roll a 300 game 35 years ago at the Ukrainian Club.
Grund, who bowls Tuesdays at Solvay Rec and in a mixed league at Flamingo, qualified with her
long-time friend, Joanne DeStefano, the mother of 2009 runner-up Michele Edick. DeStefano said Grund
taught her how to bowl.
BOWLERS ACE USBC PATTERN: For some qualifiers, playing the USBC White No. 2 lane pattern
was a piece of cake. Seven bowlers rolled a 700 series scratch during qualifying compared to just two last
year. They were Ashley Skinner (766), Margie Chetney (749), Courtney Radick (744), Michele Connor
(742), Allie Rougeau (740), Emilie Pawlick (710) and Lori Pientka (702).
This year’s cutoff score was also the highest it’s been in seven years. Last year’s cut was a modest 581.
Waiting to see where they finished on the Masters leader board is (l to r) Kitty Ashby,
Krystal Ashby and Kim Flood.
HALL OF FAMERS, FORMER CHAMPS COMPETE: Ten SWBA hall of famers entered this year’s
Masters, which drew 221 bowlers, a decrease of 18 from 2010. Teri Gonzalski, Barbara Stauffer, Jennette
Adams, Pat Youker, Carolyn Grund, Rosa Moro, Maria D’Imperio, Roseann DiFlorio, Veronica Adams
and Diane Tripp all competed. But Grund, Moro, DiFlorio and Veronica Adams were the only ones to
advance to match play.
Eleven former champions were among the players attempting to qualify. They were: Donna Dwyre
(2009), Allie Rougeau (2008), Adrienne Turbeville (2007), Roseann DiFlorio (2006), Colby Stejbach
(2005), Veronica Adams (2004), Melissa Perry (2002), Sandy Kitching (1998), Jennette Adams (1996),
Linda Nichols (1995) and Robin Brewer (1994).
Rougeau finished as the tournament’s top qualifier. Other qualifiers were DiFlorio, Stejbach and Veronica Adams.

A look back in history: Twin Trees bowling teams
By John Savage
Over the years, the Syracuse Bowling Association has had many great sponsors of bowling teams. Some of these sponsors were also well-respected bowlers. Also there were some
who had many achievements, whether outstanding bowling or meritorious service, to the
game of bowling. Many warranted their induction into the Syracuse Bowling Association
Hall of Fame.
Some of these individuals included: Flash Caloia (Raphael’s Restaurant), Wilson Van Wie
(Van Wie Chevrolet), Don Ross (Twin Trees Restaurant), and Frank Easterly (Sawmiller
Fuel). Back in the 1960s and 70s, this made for some friendly and intense bowling matches
in the City League.
This week, I would like to display two Twin Trees Restaurant bowling teams. One team
is from the Greater Syracuse League and the other from the City League. Combined, they
include seven members of the SBA Hall of Fame.
A look back in history: The 1954 Women’s National Tournament
By John Savage
The USBC Women’s Championships will return to Syracuse in April at the Oncenter for the first time since 1954.
The last time Syracuse hosted the Nationals many local women bowlers competed including the Korthas sisters,
one of the most successful bowling families in city history. Pictured are the daughters of Anna and Charles
Korthas: Frances Sass, Ann Adams, Barbara Stauffer, Roseann Bretzer and Mary Jane Egloff.
Members of the Twin Trees Restaurant team in the Greater Syracuse League (pictured on the left) and the Twin
Trees Restaurant team (pictured on the right): Tony “Moose” Ilacqua, Len Paduana, Bruno Leonardi, Phil Zollo,
Lou Scrimale, Dom Cefalo, Sam Buonomo, Don Ross, Robert “Butch” Seymour and Frank Cutri. The hall of famers
include Paduana, Scrimale, Cefalo, Seymour, Cutri , Zollo and Ross.

Section III Boys Bowling
V-V-S claims overall crown
By Bob Piraino
In a mild upset, Class B champion V-V-S won the overall Section III team title Feb. 19
at AMF Strike-N-Spare Lanes. The Red Devils are the first Class B team to win the crown
since Cortland in 2004. With their victory, V-V-S will represent Section III at the New York
State Team Bowling Championships on March 5 at AMF Strike-N-Spare Lanes.
Unfortunately because of poor weather Feb. 19, teams had a hard time arriving on time.
The weather also prevented West Canada and Cortland from participating.
Sophomore Brad Long led V-V-S with a 674 three-game total. Coach Dave Hyle’s club is
led by the top two average bowlers in the Tri-Valley League, Tristan Tormey (217) and Collin
Laguzza (215). Utica Notre Dame won the Class C/D Championship with 5,623 total pins.
The Class A tournament was filled with drama and tense moments. Baldwinsville and
Auburn finished tied for first (5,548 pins) in the Class A Tournament which resulted in a
first-ever Baker game roll-off, which was won by Baldwinsville. The Bees went from ninth
place to first during the Baker portion of the tournament with a 2,994 three game total.
The sectional tournament recognized six individuals who will represent Section III at the New
York State All-Sectional Team Championships on March 6 at AMF Strike-N-Spare Lanes. The
high average bowlers from the four high school leagues (CNYCL, OHSL, CSC and TVL) automatically qualify for the team with the two highest bowlers from the sectional tournament.
This year’s team is led by Henninger’s Bobby Moro who will be making his second appearance on the All-Section Team. Moro led the CNYCL with at 220 average. The rest of
the team is made up of:
Dan Wahl - Fulton (228 average in the OHSL)
Brett Risi – Ilion (212 in the CSC)
Rich Viti – Notre Dame (213 in the TVL)
Bob Jones – Whiteboro, 641 total
Ben Derrane – New Hartford, 613 total
Mike Tryniski from Fulton will serve as the head coach and he will be assisted by New
Hartford’s Steve Romano.
Section III Girls Bowling
Rome Free wins sectional team title
Rome Free Academy rallied from ninth place to win the overall team championship at the
Section III Girls Bowling Tournament on Feb. 13 at AMF Pin-O-Rama in Utica.
The Black Knights defeated Baldwinsville, 5,453-5,358, for the Class A and overall sectional title and advance to the state tournament. Members of the Rome Free team are: Korena
Kinney, Miranda Gifford, Megan Durgan, Alexis Zakala, Sarah Foley and Alexia Gualtieri.
The Black Knights were 256 pins out of first place behind Baldwinsville after the day’s
first three-game game block. The Bees led after three games with a 2,746 pinfall total. But
Rome Free made up the deficit in the Baker portion of the tournament to claim the crown.
CNYCL American champion Auburn finished third and three-time defending sectional
champ Utica Proctor finished fourth. But the Raiders will be represented at the state tournament as Katie Szczesniak qualified for the Section III all-star team.
Courtney Roher of Cortland won the individual Section III title with a 712 series including a high game of 267. The top two sectional finishers advance to states which will be held
March 5-6 at AMF Strike N Spare.
The remaining players on the Section III all-star team are the individuals that won high
average in their respective league. They are: Shawna Vonmatt of Waterville (Center State
Conference), Sabrina Williams of Camden (Tri-Valley League) and Alyssa Boccardo of East
Syracuse-Minoa (Onondaga League).
