AUBURN — DeKalb County
will look to pull the floodplain
articles from its unified development ordinance and create a
standalone law that would then
match the state — and, more
importantly, federal — format.
County zoning administrator
Clint Knauer approached the
DeKalb County commissioners
Monday to discuss the nowpressing need to make the move,
because flood season is quickly
approaching.
Knauer explained that the state
has reported complications when
counties used floodplain
ordinances from their unified
development ordinances, which
govern land use and development
throughout the county’s planning
jurisdictions. Knauer said the
nature of the ordinance can
create inconsistencies when
defining certain characteristics
and criteria.

Ligonier Fire Department were honored
recently for their years of service, and for
outstanding service in the past year. Barry
McDonald was named Firefighter of the
Year, while Shawn Cox is the department’s
Office of the Year. In addition, Kevin
Sheley was recognized as First Responder
of the Year.
The honors were presented during the
department’s annual awards ceremony and
dinner, held last month.

“If a person is thinking about
pursuing their GED, now is the
time,” Knox said. “We’re trying to
use that as a selling point.”
“A lot of people are apprehensive (about going back),” Knox
said. “I always give a lot of credit
to the people who want to go back
and pursue this.
GED programs cover math,
language arts, reading, science and
social studies. The curriculum is
individualized based on each
person’s strong and weak points.
“On the first day, we want to
find out how much they know in
math, science, language arts,
reading and social studies,” Knox
said. “It’s like a one-room
schoolhouse concept.”
Students also take practice
tests before taking the actual
GED test.
Knox has met with school
officials in an effort to reach out to
students who didn’t complete high
school.
“We’re not in competition with
the high schools,” said Knox, a
former school administrator at
Eastside and DeKalb.

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Members of the
Eastern Michigan University women’s
basketball team, including West Noble
graduate Chelsea Hite, soon will be headed
to Newtown, Conn., to help stage an
afternoon of basketball instruction
and fun activities for youngsters in
that grief-stricken community.
The event was spearheaded by
Tory Verdi, women’s basketball
coach at EMU, who was born and
raised in Connecticut. His first
coaching experiences include a stint
at Pomperaug High School in
Southbury, Conn., just 10 miles from Hite
Newtown.
On Dec. 14 of last year, 26
shooting deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary
in Newtown shook the entire world,
sparking Verdi’s desire to help the
community in any way possible.
On Feb. 10, Verdi, Hite and more than a
dozen members of the EMU team will work
with the Newtown Youth Basketball Association to stage the “Smiles & Basketball”
clinic at Newtown High School.
The clinic will include three hours of
basketball instruction and an hour of
entertainment. A carnival area will consist of
games, arts and crafts, face painting, a
balloonist and clowns, plus food and prizes.
Eastern’s players will be working at stations
in both the gym and carnival areas.
Hite is a senior at EMU, majoring in
elementary education. She was a three-sport
standout at West Noble and an honor
graduate.
“The reason I want to be a teacher is to
make a difference in kids’ lives, and this is

BUTLER — It’s not too late to
make a 2013 resolution —
obtaining a GED — and before
test costs are expected to nearly
double next year.
Four County Vocational
Cooperative is hoping to bring
back an adult education class to
the Butler area, in hopes that
residents will pursue their GED.
“What we’re trying to do is get
the word out,” said Rod Knox,
outreach coordinator for Four
County. “If we can get 10 students
or more from the DeKalb Eastern
area, we could possibly reopen that
site in Butler.”

GED classes at the Butler Public
Library, but classes were discontinued when enrollment didn’t

LAKE JAMES — A live webcam has been
installed at the Pokagon State Park toboggan
run, a news release said.
The refrigerated toboggan run at Pokagon
can now be watched on computer or a handheld device.
With financial support from the Steuben
County Tourism Bureau, the webcam offers a
real-time view of the toboggan run from a
tower overlooking its twin tracks.
The Pokagon toboggan run is the only one
in Indiana and one of only two in the Midwest.
The webcam can be accessed at
TobogganRun.com, where viewers can also
take a virtual toboggan ride and find fees and
hours of operation. The cam is also available on
the bureau’s website at Lakes101.org.
The toboggan run is refrigerated and open
all winter weekends and holidays until Feb. 24
this year. The run can operate when there is no
snow on the ground and temperatures are above

When Indiana University Health announced to its
26,000 employees in 2011 that it would make flu vaccinations a condition of employment in 2012-2013, it had
no idea the current influenza strains would be so virulent.
“It makes us a little smarter that this is a bad year,” said
Dr. Douglas Webb, medical director for infection control
at IU Health.
The timing, though, was purely coincidental. IU Health
had known all along that it should be “prepared for worstcase scenarios,” said Laurie Fish, IU Health executive
director of infection prevention. “Because once it
happens, you can’t react quick enough.”
