QUEDLINBURG
A WORLD HERITAGE OF THE UNESCO
unique in every regard
Quedlinburg is a city filled with life, poised between
the past and the future. Monuments from Romanesque times, 1,300 half-timbered houses as well as turnof-the-century villas and art nouveau buildings breathe
the history and culture of bygone eras. A contemporary art scene, drawn by a fascination with this unique
ambience, sets its own counterpoint to the past. As
early as 1994, the UNESCO underscored the extraordinary significance of the Castle Hill ensemble and the
historical old city by adding them to its list of cultural
monuments under its protection. With the Stiftskirche
Saint Servatii (the Collegiate Church), the crypt of the
Wiperti Church and the remains of the Marienkloster
on the Münzenberg, Quedlinburg offers not only
remarkable monuments that are highlighted as sites of
special interest along the Saxony-Anhalt “Romanesque
Road” but also the authentic scenes of important political, intellectual and cultural events from the era of
the Ottonian emperors a thousand years ago. Famous
artistic personalities who have left their mark on the
city range from the 18th century German poet Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock to the 20th century
German/American painter Lyonel Feininger. The Lyonel Feininger Gallery presents the artist’s works in
accordance with chronological, thematic and stylistic
perspectives and characterizes them further in terms
of their intellectual and art historical context.
Theatre and concert productions of the Nordharzer
Städtebundtheater, the “Quedlinburg Music Summer”
in the Stiftskirche, concerts in the festive assembly
room of the town hall as well as in the Baroque Palais
Salfeldt and in the Blasii Church are but a portion of
the wide spectrum of events to be enjoyed in Quedlinburg. Special highlights, such as the “Day of the Open
Monument,” the “Pro-Vinz Art Festival,” the “Kaiserfrühling”(an annual re-enactment of the spring assembly convened by the Ottonian emperors) and the special
pre-Christmas offerings of Quedlinburg as “Advent
City” draw many guests every year. In addition to these
events, exhibitions in the museums, galleries and
artists’ ateliers are also attractions for the visitor.
