A first for Mayflower Theatre as Scottish Opera
and D’Oyly Carte present The Mikado. The
team behind 2013’s smash hit The Pirates of
Penzance is reunited for another Gilbert and

Director Martin Lloyd-Evans, alongside a

mix of cheeky English Music Hall and exquisite
Japanese tradition. Packed with
anti-establishment silliness, and full of larger
than life characters including self serving
politicians that are all too recognisable today,
this playful show features some of G&S’s most
popular tunes, including ‘Three little maids’,
‘Tit-willow’ and ‘I’ve got a little list’.

Cape Town Opera
From tribal initiation rites on the banks of
the Mbashe River, through the heady and
rebellious jazz-fuelled days in Sophiatown; to
incarceration and reflection on Robben Island
and finally beyond, to freedom – this is the
story of one of the world’s most iconic figures.
The upbeat jazz and swing-influenced songs
of Sophiatown in the central section of the
piece are framed on either side by musical
styles more familiar in contemporary opera –
with a dash of authentic Xhosa folk music that
grounds the production in its African roots.
The amazing life of Nelson Mandela is
brought vividly to the stage by Cape
Town Opera in a large-scale celebration
and tribute to the man who touched
hearts and minds around the world.
Written by two different composers each act
is in stark contrast to the others, but with an
over-arching dramatic theme that shines a
light on the life of an extraordinary man.
Told in three parts by a cast of over 60 South
African performers, the music matches the
vastly different phases of his journey.

“ELECTRIFYING – IT TRULY IS A
MUST-SEE SHOW”
In one of the most anticipated dance events of
2016, award-winning choreographer Akram
Khan creates a new version of Giselle, the
greatest romantic ballet. English National
Ballet and Akram Khan previously collaborated
on a critically-acclaimed pieced called Dust as
part of the Lest We Forget programme in 2014.
Academy Award-winning designer Tim Yip,
famous for his work on the hit film Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon, will be creating a
stunning set design to the piece, while
composer Ben Frost will create an adaptation
of the original score, performed by English
National Ballet Philharmonic. For Tamara
Rojo, Artistic Director of English National
Ballet, “Giselle is a ballet that lives in both the
real and spiritual world; this is why I thought it

would be particularly appropriate for Akram
Khan, whose work often represents those two
worlds”. Akram Khan agrees: “I am eager to
start the creation of Giselle. It is a beautiful
and iconic piece, and I am looking forward to
bringing my own take on it”.
The original ballet is a timeless tale of love,
heartbreak and redemption: “It is a story that
you find in some way in every culture, the
woman deceived who dies of a broken heart,
and the spirit of this woman that either
forgives or seeks revenge”, says Rojo.
Akram Khan’s Giselle has been named one
of the must-see cultural events of 2016 by
The Independent, The Times, The Sunday
Times and The Mail on Sunday.
Don’t miss this unique interpretation of the iconic ballet.

1940s Baltimore. And it’s op’nin’ night
of a musical version of The Taming of
the Shrew. Rehearsals are over,
costumes donned and there’s
a 10 minute curtain call.
What you’re about to witness is a
whole lot more than Shakespeare’s
comic love story…
Leading lady and superstar Lilli Vanessi
is the ex-wife of the show’s charming
leading man, Fred Graham. Fred has a
fondness for flirtatious fresh-face, Lois
Lane. Meanwhile, Lois’ boyfriend Bill is
getting himself into debt (under Fred’s
name) which leads to hairy encounters
with a pair of foolhardy gangsters.
The stories unfold on and off-stage,
comically intertwined in Cole Porter’s
classic musical. Full of wit, dance, show
business and hit songs including Another
Op’nin’, Another Show, Brush Up Your
Shakespeare, Always True to You in My
Fashion, Kiss Me, Kate will leave any Tom,
Dick or Harry grinning from ear to ear.

Atomising bodies, movement, film, sound

sensation, Atomos is a work by cutting-edge
contemporary choreographer and Olivier
Award winner Wayne McGregor.
Music by Frank Wildhorn Lyrics by Jack Murphy
Book by Gregory Boyd & Jack Murphy UK adaptation by Ava Eldred
UK & European Première
Known for his unique, tenacious questioning
across the interface of art and science and
through the body and mind, McGregor has
remained at the forefront of contemporary
arts for the past 20 years. He recently
choreographed the stunning opening
sequence at the 2016 BRIT Awards.
Following sold out seasons in Tampa, Texas
and Tokyo, the multi Grammy, Tony and Drama
Desk Award nominated Frank Wildhorn’s
Wonderland receives its UK and European
première in this brand new British production.
Ten incredible dancers perform McGregor’s
unique style: sculptural, rigorous, jarring and
hauntingly beautiful. This ground-breaking
show contains a segment of 3D which will
immerse the audience into a stunning audio
visual feast.
Hailed by the New York Times as “inspirational”,
Wonderland is an enchanting musical
adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s
