LOCATION
The complex is 30km from the Bolognesi hills and only 15km from Modena. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the ruins
from ancient bronze age and early iron age culture have been found. The presence of Gallic communities is almost a
certainty whilst occupation by the Romans is well documented.
Only in the Byzantine period did the area return to development. It was however the Longobards who set about designing
and constructing the old nucleus of the city. Successively the municipality passed under the control of Bologna and
despite the big wars which devastated Italy in this period, large swathes of the territory were reclaimed and became
liveable and also cultivated.
Modena was for many centuries the capital of the Dukedom of Este until it was annexed to the Italian Kingdom. It is an
ancient home to the university and Archbishop. From 1947 the city is also home to the army’s Military Academy of the
Carabinieri.
Amongst its many treasures the Cathedral is particularly well known, as is the Civica Tower (Ghirlandina) and the Piazza
Grande (Large Square), all declared world heritage sites by Unesco.
The city is one of Europe’s most important economic centres. Numerous important companies specialising in foodstuffs
have their headquarters here, including the centre of production for the famous Parmigiano Reggiano (Parmesan) as well
as engineering firms. Modena is in fact the world centre for sporting cars whith Ferrari based at Maranello and Maserati
in the city itself.
