BCA Teams to Watch Don Bosco Preparatory High School Ramsey, New Jersey By Casie Vogel The Don Bosco Preparatory High School varsity team set the scene for their season when they won opening game was against their rival Bergen Catholic High School (Oradell, N.J.), 7-6. “We won on a walk off 2-run homer by Matt Dacey. That has set the tone for the year,” said Head Coach Mark DeMenna. Currently no. 6 in the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches of America ranking, Don Bosco High School is undefeated, 18-0. “The season is going very well. We are winning the games we expect to win and playing the better teams even tougher,” DeMenna said. The Don Bosco Ironmen have had no trouble this season. With strong pitching and solid defense, the undefeated team’s recent wins have been against Northern Valley High School (Old Tappan, N.J.) 15-1, Pope John XXIII (Sparta, N.J.) 11-8, and Paramus Catholic (Paramus, N.J.) 10-2. “The past few games have been lopsided in score but very intense none the less,” DeMenna said. “We have a very tough conference schedule and there is a lot of build up to these rivalry games.” Don Bosco is lucky to have strong senior and junior players on their team. DeMenna’s star pitchers include senior Jordan Gross (LHP, 3-0), junior Tom Burns (RHP, 5-0), and junior Mike Gomez (RHP, 5-0). “They keep us in the game until our offense rolls around,” he said. “Offensively we are led by Jason Vosler, (senior, SS), Matt Dacey (junior, 1B) and Nick Bruno (senior, OF).” Just like any team, DeMenna says that their goals for the season are to win the league, county championship and get as far as possible in the state tournament. “As long as we keep working hard and keep our focus, the sky is the limit for this group,” DeMenna said. The Don Bosco Ironmen still have four games left on their schedule. Good luck!
