Carbonite Family of Switchers
Designed for Live!
Carbonite builds on the Ross Video reputation for designing switchers for live studios, trucks, and post-production. At the
center of the action, it is important that the switcher be powerful and versatile, yet maintain its ease of operation. This frees
the operator to concentrate on the programming instead of the equipment, delivering a cleaner, more professional production.
Designed for Linear!
The Carbonite family of switchers continues to build on Ross Video's reputation for setting the standard for multi-definition
linear editing suites. The traditional layout and familiar controls of the Vision control panel provide the power and ease of
use you expect from a Ross switcher.
Carbonite cleanly connects to virtually any editor using the industry standard GVG100/110 protocols.
Designed for You!
With Ross Video products installed in well over 125 countries world-wide, our sales, demonstration, and training people
get a lot of ongoing feedback from customers. This feedback is carefully tracked and considered in the design and feature-set
development of our products. Key members of the design teams are part of an ongoing program in which they provide
product demonstrations, assist with product installation, and train operators. As a result, the complete line of Ross Video
products continues to offer our legendary combination of power and ease of use.
Join our Growing Customer Base!
Deciding to purchase a Carbonite switcher will put you in good company, with many thousands of Ross switchers installed
worldwide. Carbonite continues to build on a family of multi-definition switchers that have been delivering the goods every
day in live sports, stadium scoreboards, and drama productions, mobile productions, as well as local and network newscasts.
Experience Great Support!
Ross Video has designed and manufactured production switchers for over 37 years, with significant year over year growth
for the past 20 years. We believe that an important factor of our success is our focus on providing a superior customer
experience. We continually benchmark our warranty and technical support to ensure that they are the best in the industry.
We hope that you join the many thousands of satisfied video professionals around the world that are proud owners of Ross
production switchers. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or comments you have related to this

Carbonite Configuration Guide (v7.3) — What's New! • 5
Product Overview
Multi-Definition
Future-proof right out of the box, Carbonite allows you to work in either SD or HD, supporting 480i (SD 525), 576i
(SD 625), 720p, 1080i, 1080pSF 23.98, 1080pSF 29.97, and 1080pSF 25.
Serial Digital Inputs
The Carbonite Multi-Definition Live Production Engine comes with either 16 or 24 Serial Digital Inputs.
MultiMedia Inputs
The Carbonite MultiMedia Multi-Definition Live Production Engine comes with either 2 or 4 HDMI or
Component/Composite Analog Inputs. Only one HDMI, Analog, or SDI input for a single MultiMedia input can be
used at a time. Carbonite MultiMedia will not pass HDCP encoded content.
Serial Digital Outputs
The Carbonite Multi-Definition Live Production Engine comes standard with 10 Serial Digital outputs, consisting of
Program and 9 assignable outputs.
Analog Reference Input and Output
Carbonite provides you with maximum flexibility and cost effectiveness when choosing the reference signal for your
facility by supporting both external and internal reference sources. The external reference can be an input from a house
sync to the single reference input BNC. The internal reference can also be used as a house sync with selectable tri-level
sync or analog black burst with independent H/V settings for each of the two reference output BNCs.
Although tri-level sync is recommended as your reference source for all HD applications, analog black burst can be
used when operating the switcher.
See Video Characteristics on page 22 in the Specifications section, at the end of the Configuration Guide, for detailed
reference information.
Integrated Up/Down Converters
All Carbonite Live Production Switchers come with integrated up/down converters and frame synchronizers capable of
converting 1080i or 720p to SD, as well as convert SD signals to 1080i, or CrossConvert 720p to 1080i.
Format conversion is not supported on the Carbonite frame when the switcher is operating in 720p or 1080pSF. The
Carbonite MultiMedia frame supports de-interlacing on the MultiMedia inputs, except for progressive segmented frame
(pSF) formats. The MultiMedia inputs do support de-interlacing of the 720p format.
Proc Amps and Color Correctors
Color correction in the switcher is performed by either Processing Amplifiers (Proc Amps) in the HSL (Y-Cr-Cb) color
space or by RGB Color Correctors in the RGB color space. Both Proc Amps and RGB Color Correctors allow you to
apply color correction to video sources, before the crosspoint. Corrected video is then available to all buses.
Color correction is additive, allowing you to apply any combination of Proc Amp and RGB Color Corrector based
adjustment to a video signal.
6 • Product Overview — Carbonite Configuration Guide (v7.3)
Incredibly Powerful Carbonite Multi-Definition Live Production Engine
The Carbonite Multi-Definition Live Production Engines use the absolute latest technology to pack unprecedented
production power into a super compact frame.

• 9 Assignable Outputs
• 1 PGM
• 4 Keyers Per MLE
• 4 Channels Media-Store™ with 8 Gig of RAM CACHE
• 8 Channels 2D DVE (The Carbonite frame supports either 4 or 8 channels of DVE, depending on the number of
FSFCs required.)
• Proc Amps and Color Correctors for every input (Carbonite+ and MultiMedia only)
• 34 GPI I/Os
• 34 Tallies
• 2 Adjustable Independent Reference Outputs
• 1 LTC BNC input
• 1 Reference input
Powerful MLE Effect Systems
Carbonite packs major effects and keying power into up to two MLEs®. Each MLE has four powerful keyers with luma
and linear keys as well as an additional fifth hidden keyer for animated Media Wipe and DVE transitions. Each MLE
can access the two advanced UltraChrome™ chroma keyers. Two advanced pattern generators per MLE are available
for wipes, masking, and color washes. Each MLE also provides a clean feed output.
FlexiClean Clean Feed Output
FlexiClean is typically used for bilingual and live-to-tape productions. It provides a second Program output that is derived
from a different location than the standard program output. A frequent application is the recording of shows for later
airing without call-in phone numbers inserted.
The clean feed output can come from before or between the keyers. The Figure 1: Clean Feed Modes on page 7
illustrates the possible clean feed configurations.
Figure 1: Clean Feed Modes
2D DVE
Great for sophisticated looking boxes, it allows preset pattern keys to have effects applied to them such as zoom, crop,
post mask, single color border, DVE freeze, and repositioned in 2D space for picture in picture or over the shoulder
shots. You can use one of the useful pre-built 2D effects to perform 2D background transitions.
The Carbonite MultiMedia and Carbonite+ frames provide eight (8) channels of 2D DVE and the Carbonite frame
provides four (4) or (8), depending on the number of FSFCs required. All six (6) FSFCs are disabled when eight (8)
channels of DVE are required.
Carbonite Configuration Guide (v7.3) — Product Overview • 7
UltraChrome™ Advanced Chroma Keying
Our UltraChrome chroma keyer uses Ross technology to perform detailed keying in the most demanding applications.
The UltraChrome chroma keyer is provided as a standard feature.
Two channels of UltraChrome chroma key are shared within the switcher.
Floating Upstream/Downstream Keyers
Keyers have access to all video sources and can be used as either Upstream Keys via selection in the Transition Area,
or as Downstream Keys via independent Keyer Cut and Auto transition buttons. This adds tremendous operational
flexibility over traditional fixed DSKs.
Powerful Pattern Generator
A single pattern generator per MLE dedicated to wipes comes standard, and is equipped with 10 classic wipes. Most
wipes can be rotated, bordered, multiplied, aspectized, and repositioned.
Matte/Wash Generator
A matte generator and complex wash generator per MLE, capable of multi-color washes comes standard. Any one of
the color generators can be assigned to MATTE, or wipe pattern edges. An additional simple color generator is available
for an Aux Bus.
4 Channel Media-Store™
Four channels of Media-Store are available for Video+Video, or Video+Key (channel 1 uses channel 3 for the alpha,
and channel 2 uses channel 4 for the alpha). Each pair has 4GB (8GB total) of RAM CACHE for stills, animations,
audio, and logos that can be loaded.
Media-Store comes standard with 8 Gigabytes of cache. The number of images cached increases considerably when
smaller, non-full screen images like logos are loaded from USB.
MediaWipes™
A MediaWipe™ allows you to use an animation, with audio, from the Media-Store to perform background and key
transitions. When the transition starts, the switcher plays the selected animation over top of the background and keys
that are being transitioned. A cut is then performed behind the animation, at the cut point, to bring up the next shot.
The audio can come from either channel, so you can have channel 1 a for MLE 1 and at the same time use channel 2
for MLE 2. You can also load some wipes in channel 1 and others in channel 2 so that you can maximize all 8 GB of
the total Ram Cache for MediaWipes.
100 Event Switcher Memory per MLE
Storage for 100 complete switcher snapshots per MLE comes standard with all switchers. All of these memories can be
stored to a USB media drive, providing custom tailored memories for every operator and every show.
Memory Effects Dissolve
The Effects Dissolve feature allows you to interpolate from one memory to another using a memory recall. The switcher
will interpolate from the starting memory to the destination memory, creating a smooth, two keyframe effect.
8 • Product Overview — Carbonite Configuration Guide (v7.3)
Memory AI Recall Mode
We take the guessing out of memory recalls by ensuring that a memory recall will not affect what is currently on-air.
Memory AI uses the content of the memory to configure the Next Transition area and Preview bus for the background
and keyers so that the next transition takes the same sources on-air that were on-air in the memory.
Dual MultiViewers™
All Carbonite Multi-Definition Live Production Switchers come standard with two broadcast-quality integrated
MultiViewers. Each MultiViewer allows you to view up to 16 video sources, in 29 different layouts, and an integrated
time-clock showing system time or time code from a single output BNC. Any video source on the switcher, including
MLE 1 and MLE 2 Program, Preview, Media-Store channels, and Aux Buses can be assigned to any box on the
MultiViewer. All boxes on the MultiViewer include mnemonic source names, assigned FCFS resources, and red and
green tallies.
If the switcher is operating in a standard-definition video format, the MultiViewer can be set to output high-definition.
In HD output mode, the MultiViewer is only available on specific output BNCs, and only two layouts are available.
General Purpose Interface
Carbonite is equipped with 34 GPI I/Os that can be assigned as either an input or output independently.
The GPI inputs allow the switcher to interface with peripheral equipment such as editors. Each GPI input can be used
to perform simple editing and switcher functions such as fade to black or an auto transition.
Tally Outputs
The Carbonite Multi-Definition Live Production Switcher has 34 assignable tally relays located in the rack frame.
USB Media Drive
This feature makes it possible to store and recall switcher memories, custom controls, media stills, and animations to a
USB media drive. This allows operators and technical staff to back up their memories and easily transfer these settings
to other switchers.
Clear and Intuitive Displays and Buttons
We always let you know what's going on. A unique glow color can be set for each control panel. This color is applied
to all the buttons on the control panel.
Red-lit on-air sources allow you to easily identify the sources, and Keys that are on-air.

XPression using the RossTalk interface. Supported commands include sequencer commands such as take and next,
channel commands such as clear or resume, and scene commands such as TakeID and Take Action.
Roll Clip Control
Need to co-ordinate the rolling of a video server clip with a transition? Simply select the source button assigned to the
video server with Roll Clip enabled. When the next transition is performed, the switcher sends the play command to the
video server so that the clip is playing when the source is taken on-air. Native video server control over the Advanced
Media Protocol (AMP), or RossTalk™ is used. Additionally, for Servers and Clip players that do not support AMP or
RossTalk, GPI Outputs can also be used. Roll Clip allows each device to have its own pre-roll delay assigned so that
the transition takes place on the start of each element.
Custom Control Macros
This feature brings the power of macros to the switcher operator. A series of button presses can be easily recorded and
assigned to any custom control button. Step through complex show openings as easily as pressing Custom Control
buttons 1, 2, then 3. Confusing timeline programming is a thing of the past.
Custom Controls can also be used to control remote devices or other optional switcher features such as:
• Trigger a GPI to advance to the next page of your still store
• Play, stop, or shuttle multiple video servers using GPI outputs

System Options
Options are typically ordered when the switcher is purchased. However, you can order options if your needs change in the
future. Most of our options can be easily installed in the field. You can take comfort in knowing that you can purchase
options in the future and that installation at your site will be a smooth process.
XPression™ Live CG
XDS0-0001-CPS
Note: The XDS0-0001-CPS option must be purchased at the same time as your
switcher. Only one XDS0-0001-CPS option can be purchased per switcher. If you
require additional licences, use the XDS0-0001 option.
Seamlessly combine the creative power of the Ross Video XPression™ Designer software
with the ease of use of your Ross Switcher. Create stunning still graphics using XPression
Designer, and transfer them directly to an Animation-Store channel on the switcher using
the RossLinq interface. Up to two (2) channels with dedicated alpha can be controlled from
the XPression Software Client. This feature supports still images only.
The XPression Designer requires a computer with a Microsoft® Windows XP® or Windows
7® (32/64 But) operating system and an NVIDIA® graphics card.
Redundant Power
Cxx-REDPSU-EXT
The redundant power supply options provides protection against AC power failure. It
Cxx-PANEL-REDPSU-EXT allows two external power supplies to receive power from independent power sources.
CF-FRAME-REDPSU-EXT Complete failure of one source, or power supply, will not affect the operation of the switcher
in the slightest. If the main AC power fails, the switcher instantly draws power from the
remaining source. The transition from one power source to the other is totally transparent
and has no effect on the output of the switcher; a critical feature should one power source
fail during an on-air broadcast.
A redundant power supply can be ordered for the control
panel(Cxx-PANEL-REDPSU-EXT), the frame(CF-FRAME-REDPSU-EXT), or
both(Cxx-REDPSU-EXT).
When selecting the option you want, replace the xx with the size of your control panel. For
example, C2X-PANEL -REDPSU-EXT is the option code to add redundant power for
the Carbonite 2X control panel.
Use the option code CF-REDPSU-EXT for all Carbonite frames.
In-Desk Secure Mounting Kit
CPS-INDESK
This option provides in-desk or rack mounting options for the Carbonite 10 control panel.
A mounting bracket is attached to the bottom of the control panel and provides a flange

Onsite Operational Training
CARBONITE-OTR-1DAY
Although Ross Video switchers are designed to be as easy as possible to install and operate,
training is highly recommended to ensure that the process of taking your Ross Video
switcher to air is a smooth one.
Training is provided on the customer's equipment at their site. Expenses are extra, and
billed at the completion of the visit. Ross Video cannot guarantee the availability of a local
Trainer, as such, travel costs to all locations will be invoiced at cost. Two (2) days, or more,
of training is recommended for multiple MLE systems. Four (4) weeks advanced scheduling
notice is required. Additional days of training can be added with the
