The Accelerated Learning Program at Bergen Community College: Ini9a9ng, Sustaining, Expanding Prof. Amy Baldassare Prof. Iris Bucchino Dr. Leigh Jonai9s NJ Developmental Educa9on Summit December 11, 2015 What Is Accelera9on? •  A quicker pathway for students to move through their Developmental English course sequence. •  A<er spending one successful semester in the lowest level of reading and wri=ng, EBS 011, students have opportuni=es to progress into WRT 101 directly or through the EBS Accelerated Learning Program. •  Students are carefully evaluated for eligibility into college composi=on. How do students accelerate? “Targeted” Accelera9on •  Students who earn an A in EBS 011 and a 7 or higher on the EBS exit exam may move directly into WRT 101. •  Students who earn a B or higher in EBS 011, a 6 or higher on the EBS exit exam, and instructor recommenda=on may move into the Accelerated Learning Program (WRT 101 & EBS 033). “Placed” Accelera9on •  Students who earn a score of 235-‐239 on the Accuplacer may move directly into WRT 101 & EBS 033. •  Students who earn a score of 240-‐249 on the Accuplacer may move directly into WRT 101 & EBS 041. Progression to WRT 101 (Composi9on 1) Based on Placement Scores Score of 0-‐199 EBS 011 (5 cr.) Score of 200-‐234 Score of 235-‐239 Score of 240-‐249 EBS 012 (5 cr.) EBS 021 (5 cr.) Blending Developmental English and Freshman Composi=on Blended Learning The EBS Accelerated Learning Program mainstreams developmental writers into a sec=on of WRT101. These same writers are required to register for a co-‐requisite course (EBS 033) which meets twice a week and is taught by the same instructor. In the companion course, the instructor facilitates a workshop to provide students with the extra support needed to succeed in college-‐level composi=on. SIDE-‐BY-‐SIDE WRT101 A1/A2 EBS033 A1 WRT 101 A2 sec=ons are simply regular WRT-‐101 with limited enrollment, 11. Those combined with the A1 Accelerated Learning Program classes make up a regular 22 student English Comp I class. Ini9a9ng, Sustaining, Expanding •  The Accelerated Learning Program was ini=ated in Fall 2011 as a pilot in response to the needs of BCC students and current research in developmental educa=on. Two sec=ons were offered. •  By Spring 2015, the program grew to 14 WRT 101/EBS 033 co-‐requisite sec=ons, including two hybrids and one sec=on in Lyndhurst. •  In the current semester (Fall 2015), all eleven sec=ons are filled. •  We will expand to 17 sec=ons in Spring 2016. What ALP Students Are Saying: “The reason I enjoy this accelerated English program is because I do not feel too le< behind or too pushed ahead to the point where I would be struggling to keep up. It moves along at a good pace and I like the extra help because even if I do not need it I know that it is always there.” – Molly F. (Placed) “For me, the EBS 033/WRT 101 program was the one big goal that I achieved and I will never forget about it.” –Micaela E. (Targeted) What ALP Students Are Saying: EBS 033/WRT 101 has helped me get to my goals faster. I had an A in my EBS 011 class, but got a six on the Mastery Exam, so I would have been stuck in EBS 012 if my teacher hadn’t recommended me for this program. I’m really happy to be here.” -‐Taquan B. (Targeted) “I’m happy to be in an accelerated class like this because it saves =me and money. It provides exactly what we need to get on the college level. It allows me to sharpen up my skills and get back on track instead of taking a college program and struggling.” -‐ Robert D. (Targeted) Passing Rates from FALL 2011 to Spring 2015 89% pass rate in EBS 033/WRT101 (CIE) •  We recognize that combining students’ abili=es strengthens their mo=va=on, confidence, and persistence, and the stronger writers become models for college-‐level reading and wri=ng. •  Students engage in peer-‐to-‐peer learning, coopera=ve group work, and shared ac=vi=es with a strong focus on integrated reading and wri=ng. We have seen our students work collabora=vely in a diverse academic community that nurtures las=ng rela=onships. Closing the Loop and Aligning with WRT 201 According to data collected from our Ins=tu=onal Research Department, ALP students had an 82% pass rate (A-‐D) in WRT 201 as of Spring 2015 Grades 30% 25% 20% 15% 10% 5% 0% A B+ B C+ C D F Contact Informa9on Prof. Amy Baldassare [email protected] Prof. Iris Bucchino [email protected] Dr. Leigh Jonai9s [email protected]
