Black Jack
The Classic Card Game
Introduction
Black Jack, also known as “21” or “17+4” is pure excitement. The aim
of the game is to get closer to a total of 21 than the croupier. Casinos
Austria offers its guests three different versions of Black Jack. Our
croupiers are happy to provide information on which version is being
played.
The Game
Take a seat at one of the free boxes at the Black Jack table. After all
the players have placed their bets the croupier gives each box owner
two cards and himself one. Beginning on the croupier‘s left the box
owners now take their turn. Each can request additional cards until
s/he believes to be close enough to 21. But be careful: The bet and
cards of any player who exceeds 21 will be taken by the croupier.
After all box owners have reached their gaming decisions the croupier
draws a second card for himself. If his cards have a value of 16 or
less he must draw another card. He is not allowed to draw any more
cards above the value of 17.
If the croupier exceeds 21 all other players remaining in the game
have automatically won. Otherwise only those players whose cards
are closer to 21 than those of the croupier, win. If the player and the
croupier have the same number of points this is seen as a “stand off”,
which means undecided and the player keeps his/her stake (with the
exception of Party Black Jack).
You win the amount of your bet (1 : 1), if your cards do not exceed 21
and have a higher value than those of the croupier. If you win with
Black Jack, your bet, depending on the game version offered, is paid
out at the ratio of 6 : 5, 3: 2 or even 5 : 1.
The corresponding marking of the Black Jack version offered,
minimum and maximum bets as well as rules of play are affixed
to the gaming tables.

Card Values and
Card Combinations
The 1 x 1 Black Jack
The game is played with six packs of cards of 52 cards. You win when
you come closer to the value of 21 than the croupier.
Card Values
2 to 10: The value of the cards corresponds to the number at the top
of it. For example the 9 card has a value of 9. Picture cards: King,
Queen and Jack have a value of 10. Ace: a value of either 11 or 1.
Card Combinations, a few Examples:
Ace + picture card, Ace + 10:
Black Jack,

Queen + 5 + 3 = 18
Jack + 6 + 1 = 17
Ace + 8 = 9 or 19
3 + 10 + 8 = 21

Important Terms
Understanding the game being played
Black Jack
This is the highest card combination which beats all other combinations.
The Black Jack consists of an ace and picture card or an ace and 10
as the first two cards.
Box
This is the name of the playing area. Playing boxes are arranged in a
semi-circle on the Black Jack table.
Box Owner
This is what the seated players are called. Standing players must
accept the decisions of the box owner.
Insurance
If the croupier‘s first card is an ace, you can insure yourself against a
possible Black Jack for the croupier by placing an appropriate stake
on the insurance field. If the croupier draws a Black Jack the insurance
is paid out at a ratio of 2 : 1, otherwise it is taken.
Triple Seven
This consists of three sevens and is paid out immediately - regardless
of the cards in the croupier‘s hand. Payment is made, depending on
the game version, at a ratio of 6 : 5 or 3 : 2. The game is finished for
the respective box after winnings have been paid out.
Splitting
You can split if your first two cards have the same value or same
number, for instance two sixes or a “Jack” and “Queen”. You play with
a “split hand” which means you continue to play with two separate
stakes, whereby repeated splitting is possible. For each split hand an
additional bet for the same value of the first one is necessary. You
now receive any number of cards for the rest of the game. Exception:
If you have two split aces you only receive one additional card. In
this case an ace and a picture card or an ace and 10 do not count as
Black Jack because this combination was not reached with the first
two cards.

Important Terms
Understanding the game being played
Doubling
You can double your bet after you have received your first two cards.
You will still only receive one additional card from the croupier. If you
are not a box owner you can only double up when the box owner
doubles his/her stake. Doubling is also possible after splitting.

The name Black Jack is derived from special rules from the early
19th century. Here a Black Jack comprising of an ace of spades and
jack of spades was rewarded with higher payout odds. Casinos
Austria are reintroducing this rule: The winning payout for this
combination is 5 : 1.

Special rules for this game version: If the croupier‘s hand is exactly
22, this means a “stand-off” for all the boxes still in the game. Only
Black Jack wins. In this case the following applies too: A Black Jack
comprising an ace of spades and jack of spades is rewarded with
higher payout odds of 5 : 1.

The Game
Every playing field on the Black Jack X-change table is split into
two hands (Double box). You place the same bet on each hand.
The croupier deals every hand two cards.
Exchange: Now you can decide whether you want to exchange the
second card of the first hand with the second card of the second
hand. But be careful: you can‘t get a Black Jack by exchanging.
An exchange results in the following

Bust
You win if your croupier has more than 21
Introduction
At many Black Jack tables you have an additional chance of winning
with the additional game “Bust”.
The Game
In “Bust” you are betting that the value of the croupier‘s hand will
exceed 21.
If the croupier has more than 21, you win at the ratio of 5 : 2.
For example if you bet 10 Euros, 25 Euros will be paid to you as
winnings. If 21 is not exceeded the stakes placed on the additional
game Bust go to the bank.
Bets must be placed before cards are drawn.
The smallest possible bet is the same as the table minimum.
The maximum is the total amount which the player has placed on all
boxes. For example, at tables with a 5 Euro minimum, bets may be
placed in 5 steps.
