Fundamentals
There are two important guiding principles in
Girl Scouts: the Promise and the Law.
Welcome to Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland!
I’m so excited that you’ve joined Girl Scouts! As a Juliette Girl
Scout, you get to participate in new and exciting Girl Scout
experiences that fit your interests and your schedule. Juliette
Girl Scouts can do anything Girl Scouts in a troop can. You
will learn to Discover, Connect, and Take Action, all the while
discovering and using your special skills and talents.
We have three different Journey books filled with great
activities – It’s Your Planet, Love It; It’s Your World, Change It;
and It’s Your Story, Tell It. We also have LOTS of badges that
you can earn, which include a variety of skill-building activities.
In fact, earlier this year girls across the nation chose a new set
of Outdoor badges: Outdoor Adventurer (Brownie), Horseback
Riding (Junior), Archery (Cadette), Paddling (Senior), and
Ultimate Recreation Challenge (Ambassador).

Be sure to take a look at our Activity Guides, which are full of
new, fun and challenging programs and activities that take
place across the council. Attending these events is a great way
for you to meet other girls in your area while earning badges,
learning more about the outdoors, creating jewelry, or thinking
like an inventor, just to name a few opportunities.

Part of the Girl Scout Law is to “make the world a better place”.
As a Juliette, you can work on individual community service
and Take Action projects, or you can team up with other Girl
Scouts to carry out this Girl Scout tradition.

of adventures! I can’t wait to hear about your Girl Scout

Why “Juliette”?
We call individual girl members “Juliettes” in honor
of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, on October 31, 1860,
Juliette Gordon Low, or “Daisy” as she was fondly
called, spent her early life in the South as a member
of a socially and financially elite family. After the
death of her husband, Low met Lord and Lady
Baden-Powell, the founders of the Boy Scouts,
which inspired her to create Girl Scouts of USA.
About Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts prepares girls for life and has been
doing so for more than 100 years! When you
participate in Girl Scouts, you join a fellowship
of approximately 2.8 million girls and adults in
the United States (10 million in the worldwide
movement)! Girl Scouts will help you discover the

Founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low in
Savannah, Georgia, Girl Scouts is a non-profit

Uniforms & Insignia
The Girl Scout uniform is completely optional. A girl
doesn’t need to have a uniform to be a member of Girl
Scouts.
Uniforms are available for purchase at the council
shop. You can find information explaining the uniform
and where to place insignia by visiting girlscouts.org,
choose “Our Program” and “Where to Place”.
To shop for your uniform, insignias, and badges visit
our website kansasgirlscouts.org and choose “SHOP”
at the upper right corner of you screen, or go to
girlscoutshop.com/KANSAS-HEARTLAND-COUNCIL.
While there are many parts to the uniform (including clothing options), girls may just wear the sash, vest, or
tunic over regular clothing, while the formal uniform includes white shirt, khaki pants and vest, tunic or sash.

Ways to participate
Camp
Programs with a focus on the out-of-doors and/
or environmental education. Make camp a special
part of your summer and choose from our camps;
Starwoods, Double E, or Four Winds!
Events
One-day activities where you can explore your
current interests and discover new ones!
Council-sponsored activities are designed
to enhance the Girl Scout experience and
are developed for specific grade levels. They
include: STEM, financial literacy, healthy living,
environmental and outdoor, and arts and culture
type events.
Each year, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland
(GSKH) print two Activity Guides one for FALL/
SPRING and one for SUMMER events. The events
listed in these Activity Guides are also published
on our website. They include a list of upcoming
events, series, travel, and camp opportunities.
Travel
From the field trips to global adventures, if you
love exploring different places and cultures, then
Girl Scouts is the place for you! Plan, earn money,
prepare, and participate in regional, national, and
international trips.
Product Sales
Teach girls about goal setting, decision making,
money management, people skills and business
ethics. Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland offers two
annual product programs; Fall Opportunity Sale
and Girl Scout Cookie Sale.
Community Service Projects- part of the Girl
Scout Law is to “make the world a better place.”
Juliettes can work on their own or with their Girl
Scout community to carry out this Girl Scout
tradition.

Council Structure
Service Unit (SU)
Council Level
As a Girl Scout member you are part of a Girl
Scout Service Unit.
There are 112 Girl Scout councils in the United
States. The staff at each local Girl Scout council
coordinates and provides services for girls and
volunteers. Each council staff person relies on a
network of volunteers to serve both girls and the
adults who work with them.
A service unit is designed to serve the Girl Scouts
within one large community or several smaller
communities together. A service unit consists
of a team of adult volunteers that provide
direct support to the girls and adults within their
area. This team meets with local volunteers to
exchange ideas, present program resources
and trainings and share council programming
opportunities.
