Helen Conway is the Director of the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA). The Agency is an Australian Government statutory authority, and plays a central role in the government’s efforts to improve gender equality in the workplace. Prior to joining the Agency in 2011, Helen spent about 30 years in the private sector. Following 10 years in private practice as a lawyer, including seven years as a partner, Helen joined the corporate sector where she held various executive positions in companies covering the insurance, transport, downstream oil, retailing and construction industries. In addition, she has held a number of directorships in the health, transport and superannuation sectors. In 1992, Helen was the recipient of the first scholarship awarded by Chief Executive Women which enabled her to undertake studies at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management and, in 2005, she was awarded the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association Corporate Lawyer of the Year. Helen has a strong track record in the area of equal opportunity, focussing in particular on initiatives in support of women. She spent 10 years on the New South Wales Equal Opportunity Tribunal, including three years as its senior judicial member. Mark Cormack was appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of Health Workforce Australia (HWA) in January, 2010, having worked in a number of capacities in and for the public health care sector for 30 years as a health professional, senior manager, policy maker, planner and industry advocate. HWA is a Commonwealth statutory authority, established by the Council of Australian Governments in 2009 as the national workforce agency to plan, fund, research and deliver programs for the enhancement and development of Australia’s health workforce. Prior to taking up his current role, Mark was chief executive of ACT Health for four years. ACT Health is the Australian Capital Territory Government’s agency responsible for the provision of public health, hospital and healthcare services to the ACT and region. Mark has also filled a number of national roles in the public health care system, as a member of the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council (AHMAC), Chair of the Health Policy Priorities Principal Committee of AHMAC, and board director of the National E Health Transition Authority. Miriam has more than 20 years’ experience across a broad range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, banking and agribusiness, and in managing large and geographically diverse teams. Miriam is currently the General Manager Commercial Operations at Elders Limited, and in that role is responsible for operations on a national level. She previously held a number of roles within ANZ Banking Group Limited, including two years in Hong Kong and – immediately prior to taking up her current position – as Chief Operating Officer for the Pacific, which involved looking after operations across a number of Pacific countries. Miriam is also Deputy Chair of the Training and Skills Commission (South Australia), a member of South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission, and a member of the Premier’s Council for Women. In addition, Miriam works as a volunteer for a number of organisations including Muslim Women’s Association, International Women’s Day Committee, and Rotary International. She is a member of the South Australian Women’s Honour Roll for 2011, and a founding mentor for the Australian Financial Review BOSS Emerging Leaders Program. Alex began his engineering career as a cadet at BHP (Port-Kembla) while studying at University of Wollongong (UOW) in 1978. He subsequently joined UOW’s academic staff teaching computer science while completing his PhD studies. Alex then became a Professor at the Australian National University, before co-founding Seeing Machines in 2000, a high-technology company that developed computer vision systems and was listed on the London Stock Exchange. He joined CSIRO in 2004 where he was group executive of Information Sciences and member of the CSIRO executive team, before joining DSTO in 2012. Alex’s achievements have been recognised with numerous science and industry awards. In 2009, Engineers Australia (EA) honoured him as Professional Engineer of the Year and he has been included in EA’s list of the 100 most influential engineers since then. In addition, the World Economic Forum named him a Technology Pioneer in 2003, 2004 and 2005. The National Anthem.
