What is the Cassava Hornworm?
Cassava Hawk Moth (Erinnyis ello)
• The Hawk moth is confined to tropical
parts of the Americas where it has been
recorded in Central America, in the
Caribbean, and the Northern parts of South
America. The forewings of the adult moth
are greyish brown. The male has a
longitudinal dark band on the forewings.
The hind wings are reddish brown with a
dark brown marginal band, whereas, the
back of the abdomen shows two rows of
blackish patches.
What is the Cassava Hornworm?
Cassava Hawk Moth Cont’d
• The favorite host plant is the cassava. The
globular green eggs are laid singly, mainly on
the upper surfaces of the leaves, but also on
petioles and lower leaf surfaces. The female
may lay 850 eggs on average. The first larva
hatches after a few days. The caterpillar prefer
to feed on the younger leaves, but in cases of
heavy outbreaks, the older leaves and the
growing tips are also attacked. The laval stage
lasts about1-1/2- 2 weeks. Pupation takes place
in the soil.
