Two G4S Officers Honored for Assisting Homeless Man As you read this, teams of G4S officers, supervisors and managers are busy assisting our clients who are trying to recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The logistics of moving additional teams into a recovery zone are difficult, but in true G4S fashion, we are going the extra mile to meet the challenge. I am proud of the work our teams are doing and their commitment to our customers and our communities in the natural disaster. In fact, when I look at our company and the wonderful work we have done from all the lives saved by our officers — to our successful engagements at the U.S. Olympic trials in Oregon, the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention; from our extraordinary community involvement across the U.S. — to the young people we help educate and refocus — to the employment effort focused on veterans and their families — I am constantly reminded that we are an extraordinary company. As you read through this issue, please note the launch of our new G4S Career Center. The new website: www.usajobs.g4s.com is a one-stop location for anyone to apply for career opportunities anywhere and anytime. It’s the place to go if you are currently employed by G4S and interested in making a career move or if you are a friend or family member interested in a G4S job opportunity. (L to R) G4S Operations Manager Larry Gutierrez; G4S Officer Lizzette Zazueta; G4S Officer Cesar Carbajal and Karon Villaverde, Technicolor. Los Angeles, CA: G4S officers Lizzette Zazueta and Cesar Carbajal are being honored by Technicolor for assisting an injured homeless man who was attacked with an incendiary device outside company offices. The two officers heard a loud bang and saw smoke outside the building. They called 911 and remained calm under pressure while assisting the injured man, police and paramedics. Salem/Hope Creek Officers Reach 1 Million+ Hours without Safety Incident If you are new to G4S as an employee or a customer, you can get a sense of who we are by reading about our G4S All Stars pages 2-3, and our Everyday Heroes on pages 10-11. These are but a few of the outstanding heroes that make G4S proud. The pride comes through on page 5, with the introduction of Harry Jackson who joins our Portland team after an illustrious career in the police department there. With our outstanding emergency responses on page 7, and special event capabilities on page 6, you can see why veterans are so effective and sought after by G4S. I think we all wear G4S somewhere — either on our sleeves in a patch or in our hearts and minds. Collectively, we continue to build the number one security company in the world through consistent engagement with our employees, customers and stakeholders. We want to be creative, we want to listen and we want to be responsible and responsive. I am proud to be a part of G4S today than ever before. I know the people and events that fill these pages define G4S as never before. In the words of the late, great Blues legend Johnny Lee Hooker: “If you ain’t digging this, you got a hole in your soul!” Enjoy this issue and thanks for being part of G4S! Drew Levine President G4S Secure Solutions North America 2 G4S security officer Stephen Bennett is styling the Oakley sunglasses given to all members of the G4S security team at the OSHA Million hours’ celebration. Lower Alloways Creek Township, NJ: The entire security team at Salem/Hope Creek has reached an impressive safety and security milestone: 1 million hours without an OSHA reportable safety incident. The achievement was made possible through teamwork and a commitment to preventing injuries. The one million hours milestone is just one way our officers and managers work toward excellence and demonstrate the importance of G4S values, especially safety. To celebrate the event, the entire team enjoyed a barbeque and everyone was given Oakley sunglasses. Congratulations on an impressive record. ‘‘ ’’ G4S officers and personnel are the best in the security business. Their dedication and passion for their work is unsurpassed. We honor our All Stars because they are men and women of character who lead our teams displaying leadership, discipline, integrity and a “can-do” attitude. Employee Profiles Celebrating Service Employees Celebrating Anniversaries in August 2012, September 2012 30 Years John John Renowned Portland Police Officer Joins G4S Harry Jackson 25 Years David Shirley Charles Harvey Lewis Doris Susan Gilbert Abelino Juan Portland, OR: Retired Portland Police legend Harry Jackson has joined the G4S Close Protection Team in Portland. Jackson is known as a hero for his efforts in community policing. He brings a wealth of experience and unparalleled professionalism to the job. Perhaps he is best known nationally from his feature on the TV show COPS. He was often filmed while walking the beat and curbing prostitution and gang activity in north and northeast Portland. Throughout his service, Harry has learned to hold people accountable, while being compassionate at the same time. During his 34 years of police work, Harry has developed an impressive resume from his service in the Oregon State Police, Port of Portland Police, Oregon Health Sciences University and the Portland Police Bureau. As an Oregon State Policeman in 1967, Harry was the second African American hired on the force. His experience in security at the Oregon Health Sciences University has taught him additional skills how to evaluate and deal with mentally ill and homeless people. Today, Harry is a key element in the G4S City of Portland security team, where he and others are charged with protecting the mayor, members of the city council and the facilities where they work. His instincts and skills continue to serve him well, and are often put to the test. 20 Years James Floyd Steven David Richard Antonio Gregory David Joseph William Richard Terry Charles 15 Years (Left) Harry Jackson as a Portland Police Officer and (Right) as a member of the G4S Close Protection Team. ‘‘ From the Mayor’s Desk: “The help this office and City Hall gets from G4S Secure Solutions is invaluable,” says Portland Mayor Sam Adams. “Because these are well-seasoned veterans of the police force, they are able to deftly handle situations as they arise, and they have the expertise to work with the police department should something need to be elevated to that level. When they are on detail with me in the public, I never have to think about my safety. As an added bonus, I am the police commissioner and their insight on public safety has been invaluable. This contract has been more than successful as it has evolved and I appreciate the high level of support we get from these officers.” What is the Portland Close Protection Team: ’’ Since 2006, G4S has provided Physical Security Management and Uniformed Security Services ( TSO/USO/CPO) to the City of Portland Oregon. Under the leadership of Gary Crane, G4S has been recognized on several occasions for outstanding performance, operational commitment and customer focused business practices. Protecting Engineering Firm on U.S. Border G4S Custom Protection Officers® are providing close protection to an engineering firm working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along the southern border. The only way the engineering firm employees can work is on foot, through the steep and rugged terrain walking to the locations where the studies need to be done and the armed CPOs follow. The CPOs wear a BDU style uniform and a load bearing vest that allows them to carry food, water, additional magazines, ammunition, satellite communications, first aid kits, GPS, and their radios all with minimal discomfort. Some of the CPOs also wear knee and elbow protection to minimize potential injuries in the event of a slip or fall. The G4S office in Tucson, Arizona recruits these specialized CPOs who are often military or law enforcement tactical team veterans. The groups of specially-trained G4S officers are skilled in forward observation and have the physical endurance to work in rugged terrain. The engineering firm works closely with several US agencies to ensure access across the area and identify illegal drug smuggling or undocumented immigrants crossing the border. G4S officers have assisted the engineering firm in pulling out from an area because of dangerous activity. The NATO Summit (L to R) Team G4S at the NATO Summit: Hugo Nava, James Kelly, Robert Creed, Tracy Patterson, Nick Oyervides, Ron Swanson, Robert Richter, Kevin Short, Pat O’Meara, Bill O’Brien, Chad Tancil and Kelley Heneghan Chicago, IL: The G4S team received certificates of appreciation for the work they did with a financial services client and other partners during the NATO Summit. Government representatives from 28 countries, including the U.S., gathered in Chicago for the two-day event. G4S pre-planning with our corporate clients began months in advance. It’s important to note that G4S Chicago filled all assignments with local team members. While there were protests in the city during the Summit, G4S officers were ready for any civil unrest activity that often follows the NATO meetings. The G4S officers and supervisors performed exceptionally well with accolades coming from our financial services client. The local team deserves praise in its service for our largest corporate customer while the world was watching! The Democratic National Convention Charlotte, NC: More than 600 G4S officers were part of the safety and security effort during the Democratic National Convention. Charlotte General Manager Bryan Smith and his team participated in 14 months of logistical and security planning with local and national officials as well as several client partners. Demonstrations occurred around the convention area and G4S officers were involved in 25 arrests during the three-day political event. Our clients were pleased with the work from the G4S teams. Special thanks to Paul Gee, G4S Critical Facility Manager for a financial services client in Charlotte. The Republican National Convention Tampa, FL: G4S assisted several corporate and higher education clients during the Republican National Convention, recording more than 25,000 hours over a 14 day period. The planning for the security logistics began months in advance. The teams of CPOs provided outstanding service to our clients and their customers. Congratulations to General Manager Jim Parrish, Operations Manager Jerry Corso, Tampa Bank Captain Pat Demings and the entire Tampa team for a job well done. Emergency Services G4S Team Remains at Client Facility During Waldo Canyon Fire The wildfire spread quickly during the day and the glow was visible into the night. Colorado Springs, CO: As the highly destructive Waldo Canyon Fire swept near a large client facility, a team of G4S officers remained on site, conducting exterior patrols and updating management on fire conditions and safety and security efforts. When the danger had passed at the Agilent facility, the G4S team received praise for their dedication and professionalism. Even after employees were evacuated from the Agilent buildings, G4S security officers Milko Davis, Timothy Oursler and Duane Garcia remained at their posts during the fire emergency. Because of multiple road closures, other G4S officers were unable to access the site and relieve them for 19 hours. The G4S officers were the eyes and ears for the technology client and constantly updated their managers and emergency teams on the nearby fire conditions and critical facilities operations. With high winds, thick, dark smoke, and poor visibility from the fire, G4S Officers continued intensive patrols around the exterior perimeter of the Agilent complex with a focus on detecting hot airborne material that might drift on to the roof of the buildings. Luckily, the facility was not directly impacted by the fire itself. The G4S security team went above and beyond the call of duty, even answering telephone calls from concerned employees. Thank you G4S officers Davis, Oursler and Garcia for your professionalism and dedication during this emergency. (L to R) Carrey Golish, G4S International Account Director; Barry Gentry, Director, Security & Privacy, Agilent Technologies; G4S Officer Milko Davis; G4S Officer Christopher Stewart; G4S Officer Sheryl Page; G4S Site Supervisor David Medina; G4S Officer Cynthia Kelly; G4S Officer Nicholas Aman; G4S Officer Duane Garcia; G4S Officer Jason Morgan; G4S Officer Jeremy Peterson; Chuck Brock, G4S Vice President, Strategic Accounts Operations and Dorothy Roth, G4S General Manager, Colorado. G4S is fortunate to have dedicated officers who volunteered to provide security at three locations on the Island of Oahu. “Listening to the touching stories of the lives impacted, the types and amount of donations provided, I knew that Convoy of Hope has the same core values as G4S and this would be the perfect event for us,” said Lee Burgwinkel, G4S General Manager. “Once we heard about it, G4S employees eagerly joined in.” G4S partner, Outrigger Enterprise Group, also helped in the volunteer effort. Philadelphia, PA: G4S participated in a 5K Run/Walk benefitting “Defending the Blue Line”, a charitable organization that helps children of armed service members to continue their participation in ice hockey programs. The organization helps raise money for equipment, tournaments and financial assistance to children of parents serving in the military. “CPO Kevin Finn, asked if G4S could lend assistance as a sponsor,” said Marcus Perdue, G4S General Manager. “With so many of our security officers having served in the military, we jumped at the chance to help. We were all very proud to see the G4S logo prominently displayed on the t-shirts of all the volunteers at the event.” Although the miserable weather put a damper on the day, the event had a great turnout. More than 30 participants raised more than $8,000. Youth Services Tampa Bay Buccaneers Host G4S and Teens from Columbus Juvenile Residential Facility G4S and Teens from Avon Park Youth Academy Assist Military Warrior Support Foundation Tampa, FL: Through the efforts of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers community outreach program and running back Doug Martin, ten G4S staffers and teenagers from the Columbus Juvenile Residential Facility were treated to the September 9th game at Raymond James Stadium against the Carolina Panthers. The G4S juvenile justice facility partnered with the Buccaneer’s outreach program as they have similar missions that includes helping at-risk students develop a brighter future away from violence, substance abuse and gang activity. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers provided Columbus teenagers with game tickets, meal vouchers and t-shirts. The G4S leaders and teenagers at the Columbus Juvenile Residential Facility met some of the Buccaneers who autographed several items. Avon Park, FL: G4S staffers at the Avon Park Youth Academy (APYA) have developed a program for at-risk teenagers in the residential facility to participate in a restorative justice project working in collaboration with the Military Warrior Support Foundation and the Home Builders Institute. Young adults at APYA helped renovate a home for a disabled veteran and his family. The program, organized by G4S, supports the APYA mission of specialized vocational education and training programs that focus on preparing youth for livable-wage employment through an intensive education-to-work continuum. Hometown: Austin, Texas Favorite hobbies: Hunting and Fishing G4S Team Donates New Bicycle to Employee Fort Worth, TX: G4S officers at a distribution facility watched a man ride to work every day on an old bicycle. The bike was too small, but through rain and heat Del Roy Dauway made it to work. When the G4S team found Del Roy walking along the interstate, without any hesitation, they took turns picking him up and making sure he arrived at work on time. He explained his bike was broken and he couldn't afford the repairs. The G4S team was so moved by his dedication to his job and his family, they stepped up to help him. They collected more than $200 to help Del Roy with a new road bike, a water bottle, a water bottle holder, a helmet, and a bike lock. Kristian Stone, G4S Security Site Supervisor, reports when he was presented with a new bike, Del Roy was overcome with emotions that total strangers could care enough to help him out. Distribution facility employee Del Roy Dauway 10 ‘‘ ’’ Because sometimes there are moments in a security officer’s career when good training makes all the difference. These are stories about G4S security officers who inspire us with their quick responses, acts of heroism and uncompromising professionalism during emergency situations. Hospital Security Officer Helps Save Choking Patient (L to R) Eddy Esquivel, G4S Regional Vice President; Lawnwood Chief Nursing Officer Brenda Dupree; G4S security officer Michael Ward; James H. Tobin Security Manager, Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute and Ed Rodriguez, G4S General Manager Port St. Lucie, FL: A patient at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center survived a scary choking incident thanks to the quick action of G4S officer Michael Ward and medical professionals. The patient had just finished eating and began walking back to her room when she started having difficulty breathing. Two nurses realized the patient was choking and performed the Heimlich maneuver several times without success. They had trouble because the patient was physically much larger than the nurses. G4S officer Michael Ward, who is more than 6-feet tall, stepped in and saved her life. The patient has since returned to good health. Congratulations to G4S Officer Michael Ward and the medical staff for all their efforts. Family Recovering from House Fire Gets Anonymous Gift Background Cheryl Janca How long with G4S: August 2009 Military Experience: Air Force Veteran, 15 yrs, Germany, Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Hometown: Omaha, NE What’s great about G4S: Every day is a challenge and learning experience. I love working with people. Indianapolis, IN: G4S Human Resources Manager Cheryl Janca thought no one would see her in the hotel hallway that night. As she tip-toed along, G4S supervisor Rachel Sturgeon caught her in the act and asked, “What are you doing?” Cheryl explained that she slipped a happy birthday card, with $100 inside, under a hotel room door. The gift was meant to help a family who was forced into the hotel after their house burned to the ground. The family had no place to live. Cheryl, who works with G4S in Omaha said, “The little girl needs the money more than I do.” (Cheryl is part of a team temporarily in Indianapolis helping with a large corporate transition.) Sturgeon said, “I saw the mom downstairs later that night. She was crying and saying over and over that they needed the money more than anyone knew.” Sturgeon explained the anonymous gift was from G4S employee, Cheryl Janca. The next day the mom found Janca to thank her for her random act of G4S kindness.
