From the Desk of the GM
On August 26, 2015, the Board of
Directors met to consider the final
draft of the proposed budget for
FY2016. There were 38 members
in attendance for the meeting/
presentation. The Board approved
the budget with the following
motion: At this time, Club Management seeks a Board motion to
approve the Fiscal Year 2016
Budget package (Operating, Annual Capital Projects and CIP) either
as presented or as amended here
today. This motion includes
Board authorization for management to borrow against the Club’s
line of credit on a short term basis
only to accomplish the 2006 Membership approved CIP Greens
renovation continuation. If further
borrowing is necessary to accomplish additional CIP work, Club
Management will seek Board consideration and approval.
2.
3.
4.
There were a number of assumptions included in the approved
budget.
Assumptions for Operating
Income FY2016
1. Budget request reflects total
5.
income approximately equal to
FY2015 projected actual, but
2% higher than FY2015 budget.
Recommendation from Finance
Committee to combine Tennis
dues levels into one dues level
(as shown below).
Proposed Dues levels for
FY2016.
Social - $1,645 (+$45 or
2.8% increase)
Tennis - $2,020 (+$70 over
single or 3.6% increase; -$30
or -1.5% family reduction)
Single Golf - $2,875 (+75 or
2.7% increase)
Full - $3,495 (+95 or 2.8%
increase)
Multiple Membership Property - $1,065 (+25 or 2.4%
increase)
Projecting a loss of 30 Full
Memberships and 10 Multiple
Memberships. Note: This assumption alone means $58,400
less in dues income from 2015
resulting in $46 additional dues
needed per membership to
break even.
$27,500 in Application Fees
equal to FY2015 budget.
6. An increase of ≈ $25k in total
User Fees over FY2015 budget.
Approved User Fee
Increases for FY2016
1. Increase Guest Cards from $6
Daily/$20 Weekly to $10 Daily/
$35 Weekly = $1,000 additional
revenue budgeted.
2. Add an additional Coupon
Book of 100 for $300 ($3/class)
for land based Wellness/Fitness
classes.
3. Golf Cart Fees increase 10%.
Additional $17k budgeted.
Daily - $20 to $22 for 18;
$12 to $13 for 9
Annual BMC Fleet - $1100
to $1210 for single; $1600 to
$1760 for couple
Daily Trail - $15 to $16.50
for 18; $8 to $8.80 for 9
Annual Trail - $700 to $770
for single; $1050 to $1155 for
couple
4. Stay & Play increase $45 to $47
for Member 18; $25 to $26 for
9 and $65 to $67 for Guest 18;
$35 to $36 for 9. Note: Between Memorial weekend and
Labor Day these rates are

as well as what has been budgeted for next year (FY2016).
Budgeted User Fees for both
FY2015 and FY2016 represented
right at 25% of total annual
budgeted revenues.
Through August of this year,
Golf, Food Service and Wellness/Fitness are all seeing User
Fees above budget.
BMC User Fees
USER FEES typically make up
anywhere from 20% - 30% of
the Club’s annual revenue. The

Fees for this year compare to

Pool Splash
It’s hard to believe, but our pool
closes for the season in just 5
days! The final day for swimming is Labor Day, Monday,
September 7. Come on out for
The Beech Mountain Club
would like to welcome the
following new members:
a final splash or two. The pool
will be open from 9:00am to
6:00pm through Monday.
Larry and Le Donna Hauser
from Beech Mountain, NC
We are so glad to have you
all as part of our Beech
Mountain family!
Pumphouse Grill
This final pool weekend of the
season, the Pumphouse Grill
will be open Saturday, Sunday,
and Monday. We’ll be having
specials on a number of items as
we wrap up the 2015 pool season, so stop in and enjoy an
item or two from our full menu

effective Monday through Saturday after
Noon and Sunday prior to Noon.
5. Tennis Daily Play increase. Additional
$1,000 budgeted. Member $10 to $11 and
Guest $14 to $15
Assumptions for Operating
Expenses FY2016
1. Expense budget request reflects 2% increase over FY2015 projected actual.
2. For Staff: no cost of living increases/no
401(k) profit-sharing/no “merit pool”.
3. Employee health insurance up 14%.
Request includes funding Sandy Carr as
full-time Recreation Director but eliminating full-time F&B Manager position.
4. General insurance projected with 3%
increase over FY2015.
5. In 2016, we realize a once every five year
lease savings of $24k for Toro golf course
maintenance equipment.
6. New lease request – shuttle cart for Clubhouse at $175 per month for 7 months.
7. An additional $6k has been added to
Marketing with a plan to further supplement this budget if excess from FY2015
operations are available at close of
FY2015.
8. A contingency fund of $20,000 is included.
9. Property taxes are projected at an increase
of 1% to anticipate a potential July 2016
increase.
10. As usual, the revised depreciation schedule
is determined after year end during the
annual audit process, so a budget amend-
ment may be necessary but this is not a
cash flow concern.
11. The proposed FY2016 budget is presented
as a balanced budget. Restricted revenue
(capital/CIP) and capital depreciation
expenses are excluded from operations.
In the next Bulletin, I’ll include the assumptions for Capital/CIP Expenditures for
FY2016 along with the list of approved projects. I’ll be presenting this list of projects
again at the Annual Membership meeting
this Saturday morning, September 5, at
9:30am at the Clubhouse.

Taking Care of Business
As you prepare to leave the mountain over
the course of the next month or two, don’t
forget to let the Administration Office know
to change your mailing address for the winter months.
Likewise, be sure to notify the Administration Office should you have any changes in
marital status, address, phone number or
email so that we may update your account.
These efforts help to ensure accuracy on your
Club account and for billing purposes, as
well as ensuring that you receive necessary
Club correspondence. Changes can be made
by calling Carol Spradling, Administrative
Assistant, at (828) 387-4208, Extension 1.
Remember, before the season ends, if you
rent your home and have no plans to enjoy
the Club yourself during that time, you may
want to consider offering a temporary Membership Transfer to your renters. This policy
provides a great opportunity to entice prospective renters to your property, as well as
allow them the opportunity to experience
Club membership. Please contact the Administration Office at 387-4208, ext. 201, if
you would like more information on the
Transfer of Membership Policy.
Thank you to our members who have
worked diligently this season to help ensure
their guests have, not only an enjoyable time
at the Club, but helped to make the guest
process more efficient.
Remember, ALL unaccompanied and family
guests are required to have guest cards.
Guest cards can be obtained through the
Administration Office.
For questions about the Bulletin, including submission policies and deadlines, please contact Jennifer La Vigne,
Manager of Member Services and Bulletin Editor/Publisher, at (828) 387-4208, Ext. 204.
The Bulletin is published on Thursdays; weekly during the summer season and bi-weekly during the winter season.

Garden & Herb Society - Yard of the Month
immediately fell in love with the mountains.
The weather, of course, was the biggest draw,
but she was also drawn to the friendly people
and the slower lifestyle. On the way up to
Beech, Scott casually said, “Wouldn’t it be
great if we found an old A frame and fixed it
up?” Long story short, they found an A
frame, and it was in really, really bad shape.
Perfect for them as they love a challenge!
The Beech Mountain Club Garden and Herb
Society is pleased to announce the winners of
our Yard of the Month Award for September.
Karen and Scott Dell, who live at 203 Overbrook Trail, are the last winners of our 2015
season. Scott and Karen live year round on
Beech. Scott had vacationed at Beech Mountain off and on for many years. When they
were married in June 2001 in Lake Worth,
Florida, they honeymooned here. Karen
During their renovation, they extended the
drive-way up around the back of the house.
In doing so, they unearthed enough rocks to
circle the earth - TWICE! They used them
to line the edges of the drive-way and to
define (and confine) their planting beds. At
the time their careers were in Florida, so they
worked on their garden when they could
during vacations. In 2007, they made the
decision to relocate to Beech full time. It’s
taken a few years for them to complete the
planting beds, and they love the results.
They had several challenges in choosing the
plants for their yard. In addition to the ever
munching deer population, they have limited
sun as well as very wet soil in most of their
beds. They found that the deer seem to
ignore most things that are fragrant (except
flowers!) or thorny. They chose plants that
would provide color as well as a variety of
textures and movement in the garden.
Through trial and error, they’ve found several
plants that flourish for them and so far, the
deer have not eaten them.
Scott and Karen have provided the Garden
Club with a list of their recommended plants.
If you would like a list, contact Ellen Higgins
at [email protected]. AND, do not forget to drive by their home to see their beautiful yard. Congratulations, Karen and Scott
Dell!

Clubhouse Commentary
The leaves are already starting to change and,
with the recent cooler temperatures, fall is
sure to be right around the corner.
Don’t forget to check out the lost and found
in the office. Remember, at the end of the
season all remaining items will be taken to
the Salvation Army.
We have had a number of questions/
comments about parking for evening dining.
We would appreciate you following these
guidelines: a) the Golf Shop is open until

of the Golf Shop until 6:00pm, and only park
there if you have a valid handicapped parking permit; b) please refrain from parking in
front of the Clubhouse in the “No Parking
Loading Zone”; in the event of an emergency
this is where emergency vehicles will need to
park; and c) please refrain from parking cars
in the cart parking/mulched area.
Beginning next week, the Clubhouse will
begin operating on a reduced schedule Wednesday through Sunday evenings - with
the exception of private functions. Our

make one for you. The Clubhouse is closed
for regular dinning this evening.

dinning this evening.
Wednesday, September 9 we will serve the
last Prime Rib Buffet of the year.

Night Buffet.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year celebration, is Sunday, September 13, 2015.
Come celebrate with us and your friends
with a wonderful holiday meal at the Clubhouse. Together we will celebrate our good
fortune of being here in the mountains and
pray for a healthy, happy and prosperous
New Year. Doors will open at 5:30pm; dinner will be served at 6:00pm. Cost is $30 for
adults and $15 for children. Don’t forget to

for Fall Farewell on September 19.

Once again this Labor Day weekend the golf
course is proud to take part in Patriot Golf
Day in affiliation with the Folds of Honor
foundation. For those who may be unfamiliar with this charity, their mission statement
from their website is:
Of the one million-plus dependents adversely
affected by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, nearly nine out of 10 do not qualify for
federal scholarship assistance. Folds of Honor seeks to meet this need by providing annual educational scholarships to the military
families of those who have been killed or
disabled while in active duty. These help
support private education tuition, tutoring
and educational summer camps for children
K-12, as well as higher education tuition
assistance for spouses and children. Since its
founding in 2007, the organization is proud
to have awarded over 7,500 scholarships,
including over 2,000 in 2014 alone.
Volunteers from the BMMGA will be on
hand in the Golf Shop on Saturday and
Sunday, September 5 and 6, to assist you
with your donation. Donations may be made
by cash, check or member charge. Beech
Mountain Club was recognized as a Top
Performer nationwide for donations in 2014;
with your help we can earn that title again in
2015!
See you on the Golf Course,

Fairway Café Comments
This week at the Fairway Café we would like
to showcase another great sandwich new to
our Daily Specials rotation: The Hot Ham &
Cheddar on a Pretzel Bun. This simple, yet
delicious sandwich is sure to quickly become
one of our most popular. A generous por-
tion of savory ham and melted cheddar
cheese piled high together on our popular
pretzel roll. It’s everything you could want
in a sandwich. Please stop by and try one
on your next visit with us. As always, you
are welcome to order this sandwich even if it
is not the special for that day. Any of our
other featured sandwiches not found on the
menu are still available anytime upon request.
A very important reminder: Starting the day
after Labor Day (Tuesday, September 8) our
hours will change. Beginning on the 8th the
hours will be 10:30am until 4:00pm. Please
keep this in mind if you will be eating with
us. We thank you for your continued support and hope to see you soon. Have a great

over the course of three days. Beech Mountain Club had a fantastic outcome – 19 finishes in the top 3. Thanks to all the sponsors, players, and volunteers who helped
make this tournament such a success! A
tournament cannot run smoothly without
volunteers and many of our members rose to
the occasion and came out to help. Special
thanks to all of our volunteers – Nancy
Hoffman, Sally Warren, Don Kaltenbach,
Mikey O’Neal, Gayle and Hank Cooper,
Diane Berman, Lana and Artie Brown, Pete
McDonald, Heather Simon, Matt LaVigne
and Nancy Wiersma. Net proceeds of the
tournament will be donated to Friends of
Tournament Spectators

Don Mullaney, a BMC member and photographer, took many photos over the course of
the three day tournament. His website had
over 2000 hits this weekend from players
viewing the photos. How’s that for some
excellent promotion of Beech Mountain
Club? Thanks, Don, you captured the spirit
of BMC Pickleball! You can view the photos

Pickleball reunion!

Pickleball creates lasting memories and
friendships! Here are 4 BMC Pickleball
players enjoying Pickleball at Golden Isle
Tennis Center in Hallandale, Florida.
The last Skills Clinic of the season is Friday,
September 4 at 2:00pm. Sign up in the Pickleball Center. Clinic is limited to 12 participants.
The final Beginner Lesson of the season is
Saturday, September 5 at 9:30am. If you
have been meaning to give Pickleball a try all
season but haven’t gotten around to it, this is
your last chance! Come learn the history,
the origin of the name and basic rules so you
can play this awesome sport all winter!
Our last day at the Pickleball Center is Monday September 7. Where did the summer
go? There will be a sign up sheet in the
Pickleball Center for those who wish to be
notified by email of play times in September.
And don’t forget: Buy a paddle this week to
continue enjoying the game all winter!
We are working on a Pickleball Player Call
List for next year (better late than never, I
guess!). If you would like your name, email
address and phone number included, please
email Liz at [email protected]. This
list will help us contact you to arrange games
with other players, tell you about upcoming
Tournament Spectators

events and give you any Pickleball updates as
they arise.
I will be starting a BMC Pickleball Facebook
page to post BMC event photos and updates
and also to keep you all apprised of where
we will be in Florida all winter as we travel
to tournaments and clinics. If you have a
Facebook account stay tuned; I will email
when it is up and running.
Pickle On!

Drop Shots & Break Points
Wow, we can hardly believe how quickly the
summer is going by and we find ourselves
asking…where did the summer go? Before
everyone heads home, we wanted to thank
you for a great summer. As members begin
to leave, you may find yourself in need of a
fill-in. If you need help putting a game
together, give the Prop Shop a call and we
will be happy to help.
Sale at the Tennis Shop: Sale! Sale! Sale!
Everything is 40% off except accessories.
Also, all the demo rackets are on sale so
make me an offer I can’t refuse. Come on
down and start buying!
Tim’s Tip of the Week: Practice - how many
of us practice the shots they are having trouble with? I know some of you do because I
see you out there working on your game
with a partner, by yourself, or on the wall.
That is great, keep up the good work. This
is how all of us can get better…if your serve
needs work, get out and hit a basket of
serves. If your volley needs work, get out
with a partner and hit reflex volleys or one
up and one back. Work on your forehand
and backhand with a partner - hit cross court
and down the line. Let’s start practicing!
Good Luck!
