Beebe Medical Center has recently announced that its orthopaedic care is
ranked among the Top 5% of all hospitals in the nation. The ranking is made
by HealthGrades®, the leading independent healthcare ratings company, and
is part of a national study of patient outcomes in the nation’s 5,000 nonfederal hospitals.
HealthGrades® said that Beebe Medical Center is the only hospital in
Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia to receive 5-star ratings for all orthopaedic
procedures measured by HealthGrades®.
“We are honored to have earned this recognition from HealthGrades®,
and we are extremely proud of our Beebe team,” says Jeffrey M. Fried,
Beebe Medical Center President and CEO. “Our goal at Beebe Medical
Center is to continually strive to reach and maintain excellence in healthcare. This rating reflects the dedication of everyone in the medical center
family—our medical staff, our employees, our Board of Directors, and our
volunteers to consistently offer quality healthcare.”
Beebe Medical Center also is ranked Best for Orthopaedics on the
Delmarva Peninsula for the fourth consecutive year, and is ranked No. 1
in Delaware for Overall Orthopaedic Care for the fourth year in a row.
Satisfied Patients
Milton resident Ann Chambers, an orthopaedic patient and longtime
Beebe Medical Center volunteer, was not surprised by the news.
“I was very pleased with my care,” says Mrs. Chambers, who had a total
knee replacement in December 2008. “It was a good experience.”
Ann Chambers keeps her knee limber with the continuous passive motion machine

Beebe Medical Center brought specialized orthopaedic care to the community
in 1980 when orthopaedic surgeon James Marvel, MD, started practicing in
Lewes. The care has grown to include the team of surgeons and anesthesiologists,
as well as a trained and educated staff of healthcare professionals. Beebe Medical
Center recently renovated a wing in the third floor of the Lewes hospital to house
the increase in demand for orthopaedic services. Today, the new wing consists
of 29 patient rooms and four separate nursing stations. The specialized medical
staff includes certified orthopaedic nurses, nursing assistants, physical therapists,
occupational therapists, and a registered dietitian.

The Orthopaedic Wing includes one section specifically designed for patients
who have had joint replacement surgery. The recuperation program here includes
a variety of medical technologies that help patients control their pain and swelling and start them walking within hours of surgery. In the case of patients recovering from hip surgery, occupational therapists work with the latest tools to help
the patients get back to their daily routines such as getting dressed, putting on
their socks, and picking up items from the ground without injury.
Marie Berntsen, RN, ONC, Director of Orthopaedic Services at Beebe Medical
Center, describes the care of joint replacement patients as a continuum that
begins with education. Before surgery, patients are encouraged to attend one
of the free classes that take place weekly
in the new wing. Here the patients learn
what happens in the surgery and what
they need to do to recuperate.

While patients with other surgeries, such as back surgery, do not normally
require this extensive educational effort, they still receive information on their
particular surgery and what they need to do to recover and return to a better
quality of life.
Convenient Rehab Locations
Beebe Medical Center Outpatient Physical Rehabilitation and Imaging Services
located in Rehoboth Beach, Georgetown, Millville, and Millsboro support the inhospital Orthopaedic Services. Physical therapy services in Millville, for example,
offer patients a convenient location to continue with physical and occupational
therapies following surgery. The physical therapy and imaging services in Millville,
to meet the growing demand, will expand by March 2010.
Mrs. Chambers says that not long after she got her new knee, she had no
problem getting back to walking her Shih Tzu, Princess, four times a day. She
also was able to get back to her activities at Epworth United Methodist Church
in Rehoboth Beach. n

Vascular Services at Bee be Medical Center
Creating a path to save your life
Almeda Donaway of Georgetown says that Lewes
vascular surgeon Mayer Katz, MD, and Beebe
Medical Center saved her husband’s life.
In May 2008, James Donaway was exercising
on a treadmill in Georgetown when he began to
suffer terrible pain in his legs. When he tried to
sit down, he couldn’t move his legs and collapsed.
The paramedics rushed him to the Emergency
Department at Beebe Medical Center.
“They said he had no circulation to his legs
and that he had to have surgery urgently,” Mrs
Donaway says, recalling how Dr. Katz took him

home in Georgetown.
Mr. Donaway was diagnosed with “a complete
occlusion of a previously done aortic graft”—in other words, Mr. Donaway’s
main aortic artery, previously repaired at another hospital because of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), had become so blocked by clotting that blood could
not flow into his legs. Without oxygen, both legs were becoming gangrenous.
Mr. Donaway didn’t have much time and faced losing the use of his legs and
even his life. Dr. Katz performed an emergency “right axillo bifemoral bypass”
surgery—a procedure that created a “plastic” artery connecting a healthy artery
near Mr. Donaway’s collarbone to the arteries in his groin that lead to the legs.
Blood flow was promptly re-established, and today Mr. Donaway, at age 84,
is able to walk and enjoy himself again.
“We are so glad to have Beebe nearby,” Mrs. Donaway says.
Expertise at Beebe
While this surgery was more dramatic than many performed at Beebe
Medical Center, it exemplifies the vascular services and expertise Beebe Medical
Center offers the local
community.
Vascular disease is
common, especially as we
age. The vascular system
is the complex network
of veins and arteries that
carry the blood throughout the body. When the
system is healthy, blood

heart and lungs and back again, delivering oxygen and nutrients so that our
bodies work smoothly. However, if there are blockages in this system, such
as from blood clots or plaque, or the walls of the vessels either harden or
narrow, life-threatening complications such as heart attack and stroke can
occur. A life-threatening aneurysm can occur when the walls of certain vessels
in the body weaken.
Beebe Medical Center offers several vascular services. A specialized and
highly trained staff in the Vascular Lab performs several tests used to diagnose
diseases and blockages in the vascular system throughout the body. The tests
can be performed on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Beebe has
state-of-the-art equipment,
including color-flow duplex
doppler, which is capable
of the most sophisticated
non-invasive diagnostic
procedures available.

Beebe Medical Center surgeons and surgical staff
perform several different surgeries targeting the specific veins or arteries needing repair. Primary care
physicians work with patients to monitor and maintain their health, and other specialist physicians on
the Beebe Medical Staff treat patients for a host of
vascular-related illnesses including peripheral arterial
disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and heart disease.
Beebe Medical Center’s Community Health Department regularly offers health screenings with the goal
of early identification of these illnesses.
“While we promote healthy lifestyles and preventive efforts to avoid the risk of vascular disease, we
know that it is a very real problem, especially among
the growing retiree populations in the communities
we serve,” says Lynn Amey, Executive Director of
Cardiac and Vascular Services. “We are proud to be
able to offer advanced vascular care, and we look
forward to continued growth in our services.”
in 2008 had to have an endarterectomy for a blocked
carotid artery. While his also was 90 percent blocked,
he wasn’t having any symptoms. The blockage was
found through a regular checkup.
Blocked carotid arteries are commonly referred
to as “the silent killer,” because so often there are
no symptoms. A blocked carotid artery, in fact, is a
major risk factor for ischemic stroke, which is the
most common form of stroke and is usually caused
by a clogged artery.
Today Mr. Meyer, retired mechanical supervisor
from Nestle, says he’s doing just fine. He spends
much of his time helping others. n
“While we promote healthy lifestyles and preventive
efforts to avoid the risk of vascular disease, we know
that it is a very real problem.”
Surgery Clears Blocked Artery
Jane Fuller of Rehoboth Beach is an athletic
65-year-old who regularly does kite boarding at local
bays and beaches. She is a veteran at balancing herself through the waves on a board while at the same
time clutching an overhead bar attached to a kite.
One day last summer when she was at home, both
her arms and hands started stiffening up. She collapsed. Today she knows that 9-1-1 was called and
that she was rushed to Beebe Medical Center. She
was diagnosed with a 90 percent blockage in one of
her carotid arteries. The carotid arteries, one on each
side of the neck, carry blood to the head and the
brain, where thinking, speaking, feeling, and motor
functions are found. Dr. Katz performed an endarterectomy, the surgical removal of plaque, and finished
with a patch graft.
“She’s an incredible woman,” Dr. Katz says,
adding that she is doing well in her recovery and
he expects to see her soon on her kite board.

Shopping With Your Heart in Mind
Making the Right Choices
It’s easy to get overwhelmed when walking into a supermarket. There are so
many choices. Most of us know that fresh fruits and vegetables are essential to
a healthy diet. We know that fresh fish is important and that we should only eat
red meat in moderation. Most of us know that chicken and turkey are best eaten
without the skin because that’s where all the fat is. What about everything else?
Habib Bolourchi, MD, a Lewes cardiologist and member of the Medical Staff
at Beebe Medical Center, has taken us on a tour of a local supermarket to help
us make the best nutritional choices in regards to our heart. The most important
rule is to read labels, he says. That way, you are assured of being in charge of
what you are buying and what you are eating. One ingredient Dr. Bolourchi
strongly warns against is “trans fat.”
“It has no known benefit,” he says. “It is associated with coronary disease and
no one should eat it.”
Other names for trans fat are “partially hydrogenated oils and hydrogenated
vegetable oils.” It’s not unusual to have a product label state “trans fat free,”
yet a close look at the list of ingredients will reveal that the item has “partially
hydrogenated oils.” That means that the food product contains less than 0.5g
of trans fat per serving. Luckily for all of us, in recent years many manufacturers
have removed trans fat from the list of ingredients in processed foods. Peanut

butter, for example, used to be a big culprit.
The most important rule to follow in the rest of
the store, he says, is to read the nutritional label.
•D
on’t depend on what is written on the front of
the can or package as there may be surprises on
the nutritional label. For example, a lite or lowfat product can contain a high percentage of sodium, also known as salt, which should be avoided if
you suffer from heart disease. Even healthy adults
should not eat more than 3,000mg of sodium a
day, according to the American Heart Association.
• Dairy products can be high-fat culprits, though
they are rich in calcium. Balance your choices.
If you occasionally enjoy whipped cream, go for
nonfat when you buy milk and ice cream. Some
dairy products have high amounts of sugar and fat.
Take yogurts, for example, as their ingredients and
nutritional values are varied. Non-fat yogurt can be
filled with sugar. Check out the plain
yogurts. You can get
one of those and
add your own fresh
fruit when you get
home. Dairy products also can contain high amounts
Low-fat cheeses like feta often have more
sodium than other cheeses, such as cheddar.
of cholesterol, and
too much of that leads to heart disease. Try not
to eat more than 300mg a day. Saturated fat also
increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
• Fruit juices are not “fresh fruit.” They
are loaded with sugar. Be aware of
how much sugar you are consuming,
especially if there is diabetes in the
family. Again, read the labels. Some
are better than others.
•W
hen you’ve got that craving for
snack food, find those that are
lower in fat and sodium. By
checking and comparing labels,
you can easily find the ones right
for you. Pay particular attention
to whether the snack items
include trans fat, which has been
associated with coronary disease.
• Most commercial salad dressings
are fat and sodium culprits. Check the serving
sizes. The calories can be as high as 250 per
serving, and that’s usually for only two tablespoons. How much do you use? Buying any
one of a number of vegetable oils and vinegars
will allow you to
make healthier
dressings. n
Salad dressings generally are loaded
with fat. “Lite” usually means less
fat but also can mean more sodium.
Read labels on snack items to find the
ones that are best for your health.
•C
anned and juiced tomato products usually
are loaded with sodium, but there are some
low-sodium options from which to choose.
•C
anned soups and vegetables, as well as canned
fruits, also demand your attention. Check the
labels. If you are on a low-sodium diet or have
problems with high blood pressure, it’s better
to either buy the soups low in sodium or make
your own from scratch.

Advanced Technology
Digital Mammography
Beebe Medical Center radiologist Ellen Bahtiarian, MD, enjoys working with
digital technology.
10
To improve the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, Beebe Medical
Center is offering digital mammography services at four convenient locations
in eastern Sussex County.
The services are located at Beebe Medical Center’s main location on
Savannah Road in Lewes, at Beebe Health Campus on John J. Williams
Highway (Route 24) in Rehoboth Beach, at Beebe Imaging at Georgetown
Professional Park on Office Circle just off Route 113 in Georgetown, and
at the Beebe Imaging Center in Creekside Plaza, on Route 26 in Millville.
“By offering this imaging technology in locations easily accessible to
our growing population, we hope that women decide to get their annual
mammograms,” says Beebe Medical Center radiologist Ellen Bahtiarian, MD.
While digital mammography is similar to traditional film mammography
in many ways, it has advantages. Since there is no waiting for film to be developed, images are immediately available for review by the technologist. Images
rarely need to be repeated for quality issues. For patients this means that they
spend less time in the exam room. For radiologists, it means an image that
can be easily viewed and analyzed, as well as shared with other physicians
and diagnosticians electronically.
“Regular mammograms are critically important so
that we can catch cancer in the earliest possible stage.”

ences in the tissue,” she
explains. “The images can be stored in the computer so that you always have
them. They are never lost. And because they are electronic, they can be placed
on a digital imaging network for other physicians to view.”
The technology also allows the radiologist to magnify images that might
otherwise be difficult to view, as well as to increase the contrast when imaging
dense tissue. This option is especially important because dense breast tissue
and breast cancer can have similar density on a mammogram.
Janete Mills, MD, a radiation oncologist at Beebe Medical Center’s Tunnell
Cancer Center, says the technology is one more tool to support the Beebe
Medical Center medical team in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
“It allows our multidisciplinary team at Beebe Medical Center another opportunity to work together in our effort to treat our patients,” she says, explaining
that the medical center’s oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and other medical professionals already work closely when diagnosing and treating cancer
patients.
The Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary has supported the hospital in its decision
to invest in digital mammography by recently presenting the hospital with
$275,000 to purchase one of the machines.
“This is truly an important technology for Beebe Medical Center and we are
committed to supporting the medical center in its efforts to bring quality healthcare to our community,” says Betty Surbaugh, Auxiliary President.
Both Dr. Mills and Dr. Bahtiarian urge women who are 40 years old or older,
or who are at high risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer, to get annual
mammograms.
“Don’t skip even one year,” Dr. Bahtiarian says. “Regular mammograms are
critically important so that we can catch cancer in the earliest possible stage.”
Appointments can be made by telephoning the Beebe Medical Center
Radiology Scheduling Department at (302) 645-3278. A physician’s referral
is required. n
women of any age who had very dense breasts.
• Digital mammography allows improvement in image
storage and transmission because images can be
stored and sent electronically.
• Death rates from breast cancer have been declining
since 1990, and these decreases are believed to be
the result, in part, of earlier detection and improved
treatment.
Facts about Breast Cancer
Not counting some kinds of skin cancer, breast
cancer in the United States is:
• T he most common cancer in women, regardless of
race or ethnicity.
• T he most common cause of death from cancer
among Hispanic women.
• T he second most common cause of death from
cancer among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander,
and American Indian/Alaska Native women.
• In 2005 (the most recent year numbers are
available):
>1
86,467 women and 1,764 men developed
breast cancer.
>4
1,116 women and 375 men died from
breast cancer.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The American Cancer Society recommends these
screening guidelines for breast cancer:
•Y
early mammograms should start at age 40 and
continue for as long as women are in good health.
•B
reast self-exam is an important option for women
starting in their 20s, as they should know how their
breasts normally feel, so that they can report any
changes to their healthcare providers.
•W
omen in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical
breast exam (CBE) as part of a periodic (regular)
health exam by a health professional, preferably
every three years. After age 40, women should have
a breast exam by a health professional every year.

Giving for a Purpose
Casey Walsh, RN, a nurse at
Beebe Medical Center, utilizes
a monitor similar to those in the
Cardiac Cath Lab.
12
Robert Edgell still remembers the panic he felt
in 2007 when he learned his wife, Lynn Edgell, had
suffered a stroke while alone at their summer house
on Lewes Beach.
“I was in my office in Dover,” he recently
recalled. Somehow, she was able to get to the telephone and dial 9-1-1. Within minutes the paramedics
arrived and quickly got her to Beebe Medical Center
in time for the treatment that not only saved her life
but also allowed her to enjoy her life once again.
“As we all know, the treatment one receives in the
first three hours after a stroke is critical to the prospects of recovery,” Mr. Edgell wrote in his letter to
Beebe Medical Foundation Executive Director Alex
Sydnor. The letter reported on Mrs. Edgell’s good
recovery and accompanied a donation of $25,000 so
that Beebe Medical Center could help other patients
at risk of stroke.
“Mr. Edgell’s generous gift is greatly appreciated
and has helped Beebe Medical Center as we continually improve the care we provide our patients,” Mr.
Sydnor says.
With the donation, Beebe purchased new Philips
IntelliVue patient monitors for its Cardiovascular
Institute. These monitors are used to observe
patients’ vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse,
respiration, and oxygen saturation as patients recover from diagnostic arterial studies. The monitors
also store information for later viewing or trending.
Blockages of the carotid arteries are frequently
the cause of Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs) or
strokes. TIAs are sometimes called “warning” or
“mini” strokes and can signal that a patient is at
high risk to suffer a stroke.
Many donors have designated gifts to a specific
Beebe program that has helped them or a member
of their family. Directed gifts allow donors to express
their commitment to a service they strongly believe
in to support their local, not-for-profit, communityowned hospital. This year, for example, 15% of the
funds to be spent on capital projects come directly
from the Beebe Medical Foundation.
“Donations are critically important to Beebe
Medical Center,” says Jeffrey M. Fried, Beebe
President and CEO. “It would be difficult for us to
continue to grow, expand, and develop the services
we provide to our community without them.”
Beebe Honor Roll of Donors
(7/1/2008–6/30/2009)
Beebe Medical Foundation was established in 1989 with the sole mission
to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Medical Center.
Through the efforts of the Foundation more than $28 million has been
raised to support new construction and renovation of medical facilities,
new and ongoing medical programs, and to establish an endowment fund
to ensure Beebe will always be available for this community.
As an independent not-for-profit organization Beebe Medical Center relies
on the generosity of the many individuals, businesses, and foundations that
are listed in this Honor Roll of Donors.
Beebe Medical Foundation is located in the former home of Dr. Richard Beebe, who co-founded
Beebe Medical Center in 1916 with his brother Dr. James Beebe. The house originally stood down
the street on the site of what is today the clinical building of the hospital.
School of Nursing Campaign
The proceeds from the School of Nursing Initiative will benefit Beebe Medical
Center’s School of Nursing construction project.
There is a critical nurse shortage in Delaware and across the country. Nurses
provide frontline care and comfort at difficult times in patients’ lives.
The new nursing education building will double the capacity of the current
nursing class and enable us to graduate more nurses. The new facility will also
provide the latest technologies in nursing education.

South Coastal Health Campus Campaign
The proceeds from the South Coastal Health Campus Campaign will help develop
a new outpatient medical facility in the Millville–Ocean View area. The new
facility will effectively double the outpatient capacity that is currently offered
at the Millville facility.
The facility will include summer-only emergency services, a comprehensive
physical rehabilitation department, a walk-in laboratory and EKG services,
and a complete diagnostic facility with CT, MRI, mammography, plain-film
X-ray, and ultrasound.

The Beebe Annual Fund is one of the most important sources of funds for the medical center. Unrestricted and restricted funds contributed through the Annual Fund
support ongoing operations and make possible various community programs that

Jean & Joan Fund Golf Tournament
October 7, 2008
The Jean & Joan Fund was established in the memory of Jean James and Joan
Martin, two outstanding women who lost their valiant battle with cancer. During
their final months, both women were surrounded by families that loved and cared
for them and a circle of friends who generously gave their time and support.
It is most important that people going through these trying times receive all the
physical and spiritual support available. The goal of the Jean & Joan Fund is
to assist the Tunnell Cancer Center in providing care and comfort for patients.
The fund has supported the establishment of the Jean & Joan Reflection Center
at the Tunnell Cancer Center, purchased two vans for the transport of patients to
and from their treatments, funded the building of the enclosure for the Tunnell
Cancer Center Healing Garden, and supports the Tunnell Cancer Center Special
Needs Fund.
The 2008 Golf Tournament raised $30,000, bringing the total Jean & Joan Fund
contributions since its inception to $250,000.

Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament
July 17, 2008
Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club’s Progress for Prostate Charity Golf
Tournament was established by a group of individuals who wanted to focus
attention on prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer
found in American men, other than skin cancer. Early detection is the key to
combating this disease.
The 2008 tournament raised over $22,000 bringing the total contributions of
Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament to over $100,000 to help Beebe
Medical Center provide free prostate screenings and community awareness
programs.

The Emergency Department at Beebe Medical Center
opened its new $12.5 million, 20,000-square-foot facility
on the first floor of the Joseph R. Hudson Wing, funded
in part by the Vision 2005 Campaign. Thanks to hundreds
of donors the emergency services staff is able to deliver
more efficient and effective treatment to the 41,000
patients who come through our doors annually.
Beebe’s Lewes Emergency Department now boasts 30
treatment rooms, plus seven cardiac/trauma rooms.
Process improvement and state-of-the-art technology,
including our own CT scanner, enable faster patient flow
for our growing numbers of older and sicker patients.
Other patient-friendly enhancements include:
• a “lean tract” for non-urgent care
• bedside registration
• direct to bed when available
More than 60 percent of ambulance patients in Sussex
County are brought to Beebe. The skilled paramedics
in Sussex County, serving under my medical direction,
along with that of Paul Cowan, DO, and other physicians
in Sussex Emergency Associates (SEA), play an important
role in the early treatment and stabilization of patients
en route to Beebe Medical Center. Our Level III trauma
service enables Beebe to deal with almost any situation
that might confront us.
The physicians, nurses, technologists, and support staff
in the Emergency Department all take great pride in
our work. We thank you for your support. However, our
patients, some of whom might be your family members,
friends, or neighbors, have reason to celebrate the most.
Gratefully,
Kevin D. Bristowe, MD

classic at baywood Greens charity golf tournament
June 3, 2009
The Classic at Baywood Greens Golf Tournament was established by a committee
of individuals that partnered with local sponsors to benefit the Tunnell Cancer
Center. The Classic’s contributions allow expanded comprehensive cancer care
service. From diagnosis through treatment and beyond, patients at the Tunnell
Cancer Center are never alone.
The 2009 Golf Tournament raised $30,000 to assist Beebe Medical Center in
providing both hope and wellness to cancer patients and their families. The
committee greatly appreciates the local sponsor support.
