July/August 2015 - Westhampton Free Library
Westhampton Free Library July/August 2015 ...to serve the community; cultivate knowledge; promote curiosity; and inspire lifelong learning... Serving Westhampton Beach, Westhampton, East Moriches, Eastport, East Quogue, Manorville, Quiogue, Remsenburg and Speonk Visit the Family Place! The children’s room of the Westhampton Free Library is proud to be a Family Place location. A Family Place is a center for early childhood information, parent education, literacy, socialization and family support. Family Place expands on the traditional role of children’s services by providing resources for families and an educational environment for children. To achieve this goal, we have been providing developmentally appropriate programs such as Early Adventures: a parent child workshop. This is a play-based program where parents and caregivers are encouraged to interact with their child at various activity stations. During the program series, community professionals, such as a dentist, nutritionist, and child development specialist, are available to speak informally with the child’s adult. Children are our patrons and will feel welcome from the moment they walk into the library. The first thing they will see is a toy at the self-checkout station. Once upstairs, they are greeted by the Idea Place staff and a familycentered play area. Developmentally appropriate toys are provided in our Preschool area. Parents and children play together while meeting new friends in a safe environment. The Westhampton Free Library is at the center of the Westhampton community, and the Family Place is a cornerstone of the Library. We are a building that supports children and provides an environment that encourages lifelong learners. FRIENDS OF SPORT POETRY CONTEST WINNERS Congratulations to the Winners of the Friends of the Library 2015 Poetry Contest, which had the theme “Friends of Sport.” What better way to begin the summer than with two of the poems, here below? What Day by Fallon Spellman Swimming, Here I Come by Rylee McGinness I was called up to the post, One by one. People were saying, “Boo you stink” But that’s not all. Jumping in the pool, Like a dolphin in the ocean. Pushing off the wall, Like a shooting star at night. It got worse, People threw stuff. The only person who didn’t, Was my friend. My arms are like bird wings, Flying in the air. My feet are like scissors, Cutting through the water. I got back down, From the pedestal, My teacher said, “Wow I wish you did better.” I come up to breathe, Like a whale searching for air. I need to swim, Like plants need the sun. Then it was over, My first competition. I failed like a bird, With one wing. I wish I won, At least third place. My friend went to me, “I know you’ll do better.” I nodded, “Thanks!” My day was done. Over and through, It’s like brand new. More exciting Adult programs can be found on pages 2-3!! The Library is glad to provide reasonable accommodations for patrons with special needs.
