July/August 2015 - Westhampton Free Library
Westhampton
Free Library
July/August 2015
...to serve the community; cultivate knowledge; promote curiosity; and inspire lifelong learning...
Serving Westhampton Beach, Westhampton, East Moriches, Eastport, East Quogue, Manorville, Quiogue, Remsenburg and Speonk
Visit the Family Place!
The children’s room of the Westhampton Free Library is proud to be a
Family Place location. A Family Place is a center for early childhood
information, parent education, literacy, socialization and family support.
Family Place expands on the traditional role of children’s services by
providing resources for families and an educational environment for
children. To achieve this goal, we have been providing developmentally
appropriate programs such as Early Adventures: a parent child
workshop. This is a play-based program where parents and caregivers
are encouraged to interact with their child at various activity stations. During the
program series, community professionals, such as a dentist, nutritionist, and child
development specialist, are available to speak informally with the child’s adult.
Children are our patrons and will feel welcome from the moment they walk into the
library. The first thing they will see is a toy at
the self-checkout station. Once upstairs, they are
greeted by the Idea Place staff and a familycentered play area. Developmentally appropriate
toys are provided in our Preschool area. Parents
and children play together while meeting new
friends in a safe environment.
The Westhampton Free Library is at the center
of the Westhampton community, and the Family
Place is a cornerstone of the Library. We are a
building that supports children and provides an
environment that encourages lifelong learners.

Literacy Outreach Project
The Library’s Literacy Outreach Project continues this spring and summer. This
unique project provides programs and services for the four forms of literacy:
Adult Literacy, Digital Literacy, Early Childhood Literacy and Financial Literacy.
This project would not be possible without the generosity of the Friends of the
Westhampton Free Library the continued support of their sponsors.
Adult Literacy
Library staff members are currently training in literacy instruction. This training
will enable them to train community volunteers to work “one on one” with local
students. It’s a great way for our community members to get involved with our
literacy project.
Digital Literacy
Get the latest and the best of the digital world. It’s easy! Our Head of Computer and
Digital Services, Dave Jones, will show you how. The Library would like to thank Mr.
& Mrs. Robert D. Delbagno & Freear Pollard (Platinum Sponsors of the Literacy
Outreach Project Fundraiser) for sponsoring these programs.
DELETE, DELETE, DELETE : Friday, July 17 at 12:00pm. Privacy is an ever
increasing concern in the digital world. Dave Jones will show you how to protect your
privacy on the internet by limiting tracking, lowering your profile and locking down
your social media. Limited class size. Registration is required for this class.
DIGITAL YARD SALE: Friday, August 7 at 12:00pm. If you love yard sales and
flea markets, this is the class for you. Learn how to use the best apps to locate the best
sales - and more. Registration is required for this class.
Early Childhood Literacy
The Idea Place would like to thank the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the
Westhampton Free Library and the donors of the Literacy Outreach Project
Fundraiser held last August. Each child will receive a hardcover book for every
hundred books read. When the child completes the program by having read one
thousand books, ten classic story books will have been earned for that child’s personal
library. Current titles to be purchased are Ferdinand by Munro Leaf and Harold and
the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson.
MOVIES ON THE GREAT LAWN!: Mondays, June
29 – August 24 at dusk. The Library and the Village are

And as for the bucket, Nantucket.

From a striking new voice in modern
fiction, A Remarkable Kindness traces

to appreciate the sorrows and wonders of life.
Diana Bletter has worked for The New York Post,
New Jewish Times, and National Lampoon. Her
writing has appeared in The New York Times, The
International Herald Tribune, Huffington Post,
Glamour, and Beliefnet, and she was the first prize
winner of Family Circle’s 2011 Fiction Contest.
Her novel The Witches’ Secret was a semi-finalist in
Amazon’s 2009 Breakout Novel Award and her first

FRIENDS OF SPORT POETRY CONTEST
WINNERS
Congratulations to the Winners of the Friends of the Library 2015 Poetry
Contest, which had the theme “Friends of Sport.” What better way to begin
the summer than with two of the poems, here below?
What Day
by Fallon Spellman
Swimming, Here I Come
by Rylee McGinness
I was called up to the post,
One by one.
People were saying, “Boo you stink”
But that’s not all.
Jumping in the pool,
Like a dolphin in the ocean.
Pushing off the wall,
Like a shooting star at night.
It got worse,
People threw stuff.
The only person who didn’t,
Was my friend.
My arms are like bird wings,
Flying in the air.
My feet are like scissors,
Cutting through the water.
I got back down,
From the pedestal,
My teacher said,
“Wow I wish you did better.”
I come up to breathe,
Like a whale searching for air.
I need to swim,
Like plants need the sun.
Then it was over,
My first competition.
I failed like a bird,
With one wing.
I wish I won,
At least third place.
My friend went to me,
“I know you’ll do better.”
I nodded, “Thanks!”
My day was done.
Over and through,
It’s like brand new.
