C ongratulations to Our Ten Year Employees at
Mulberry Gardens of Southington
Marie Terzak, Retirement Counselor
I have been the Retirement Counselor at Mulberry
Gardens for 10 years this March. I moved to
Southington in 1979; I was born in New Britain.
Prior to coming to Mulberry Gardens, I worked as a
Real Estate Broker. Before that, I was an Associate
in the Trust Investment Department at The New
Britain Bank and Trust Co., and was a Registered
Representative counseling investors about Tax Free
Municipal Bonds and other short-term money market
instruments. I am also a member of the choir at Mary
Our Queen Church in Plantsville.
John Swiatek, Dining Service Director
I have been the Food Service Director for the past
10 years at Mulberry Gardens. Prior to Mulberry, I
was the Chef Manager at Southington Care Center
for 13 years. I also have worked in various hotels and
restaurants including the Yankee Silversmith Inn. I
currently live in Bristol with my wife Ginny.
A special thanks goes out to both Marie and John for making
such a positive impact on the lives of our residents. You are
both model employees and we appreciate everything you do
each and every day!

delicious sweets
Valentine’s Day was especially sweet as our members enjoyed dipping fresh strawberries in chocolate, eating Red Velvet cake
for dessert and a toasting with sparkling cider—led by the always upbeat and positive Carmelo—Driver Extraordinaire, and so
much more! It was a day filled with laughter, fun and so much love. Just like every day is here at Marian Heights—love is just
simply what we do!
Spring into Health
by Nicole Lumley
Exercise Physiologist
With the warm weather and the flowers blooming, it’s clear that most of us will be itching to go outside and enjoy the change
of seasons. With that—it’s important to make sure we are making healthy choices. Here are three healthy habits that will keep
a spring in your step!
1. Eat right. The old saying is true—you are what you eat! Make smart choices by keeping your plate full of colorful fruits and
vegetables.
2. Wear sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend applying SPF 15 (or greater) sunscreen every day. For maximum benefits,
make sure to apply sunscreen to your ears, neck and hands too!
3. Stay hydrated. Water is needed for almost every body process, including perspiration and the removal of waste products, so
make sure you meet your daily quota—that's about eight cups a day.
Complement Corner
I recall visiting my Dad in a skilled nursing
facility and saying to myself, “I wish he wasn’t
so sick so that he could come to Mulberry." I
was thinking about the time my parents came
to a party here and I introduced him to one of
the residents, John, whom I admired. He started
chatting and said he would meet us in the lobby
in a few minutes. When the party was over, he
was still in John’s apartment talking about the
dinosaurs’ movements through the Connecticut
River valley. That was many years ago and I
knew, then, that Mulberry Gardens was a special
place.
