10|2013 THE HANOVERIAN No. 10 | October 2013 European Championships It can‘t get any better Bundeschampionat Two Hanoverian Champions European Vice-Champion: FRH Escada JS and Ingrid Klimke. Photo: Rau It can‘t get any better! It was just sensational. FRH Escada JS became Team European Champion in September and then won the silver medal in the individual competition under rider Ingrid Klimke! FRH Butts Avedon and rider Andreas Dibowski were also members of Germany’s goldwinning team. Shamwari with rider Ludwig Svennerstal and Reality with Sara Algotsson-Ostholt were members of the silver-winning team from Sweden. By Rolf Hillmann and Britta Züngel „I t just can not get any better!” Ingrid Klimke chose the nine-year old state’s premium aspirant FRH Escada JS by Embassy/Lehnsherr instead of the experienced FRH Butts Abraxxas. FRH Escada was meant to participate as an individual but after she had done so well in her dressage work during the preparation in Luhmühlen she was chosen as a team member. She had her best performance ever in the dressage ring at Malmö – the result of concentrated winter training that inclu- 2 The Hanoverian 10|2013 ded the participation in several dressage shows. All this after some atrocious performances last year as Ingrid Klimke said to herself; for instance in Boekelo who finished her dressage test in last place and only attracted attention because of a few leaps of joy! She did considerably better this year. It was not only the victory in Wiesbaden but also placements in all 3*-competitions she participated in that led to her becoming a team member in Malmö. Apropos preparation in Luhmühlen: The German national trainers are known not to leave anything to chance. They knew that the show grounds in Malmö would present unexpected distractions due to its oceanfront location. Therefore they added as many flags to the flagpole in Luhmühlen as possible. The flags made quite a bit of noise in the stiff ocean breeze on Thursday´s dressage day in Malmö but that did not bother FRH Escada JS at all. She started on the cross-country course with the fourth-best result after dressage; it was more demanding than the one at the European Championships in Luhmühlen two years ago. Good ground conditions allowed for faster than expected rides. Hence there were several faultless rounds. “She mastered all questions very bravely and with good overview. It was such a gift to be able to ride such an exceptional horse,” Ingrid Klimke raved in the TV cameras after the completion of the cross-country course. FRH Escada’s talent over fences is well known and – accordingly – she did not add any faults to her dressage score. “I know that FRH Escada JS is a world-class horse. For her to convince everybody of her abilities through superior and consistent performances in all disciplines at her first championship made me especially happy. FRH Escada JS is only nine years of age. I am looking towards our joint future with confidence!” European Vice-Champion: FRH Escada JS and Ingrid Klimke. Photo: Toffi Followers Not only in Malmö but also just there – always present: Breeder Jürgen Stuhtmann and his family were in great spirits when they joined the colony of caravans of German followers. He beamed with joy when “his” Escada crossed the finish line of the cross-country course in time with 11 seconds to spare – and it was not the last time he did that! “My emotions took over when the national anthem started to play at the distribution of trophies,” so the breeder; he has a contract that states that this exceptional mare will return to Family Stuhtmann to become a broodmare.” FRH Escada JS descends from the mare line of Nordspitze that is one of Hanover’s most lucrative jumper lines; stallion Monte Bellini does too. Furthermore Jelly Lorum who is a right sister of Escada’s dam Lehnsherrin successfully competed at the 3*-level with rider Marina Köhnke then Loheit. The European Championship and the European Vice-Championship titles have so far been the highlights of a career that started at the Bundeschampionate when FRH The Hanoverian 10|2013 3 Sport Butts Avedon’s dam Andora. A big mistake in a cautiously ridden dressage test caused FRH Butts Avedon to have an unfavorable starting position for cross- country (27th place). “Dibo” did not get diverted though. His experience and his strong nerves helped him to ride the cross-country course almost exactly in the time allowed. The pair had bad luck with the weather on the stadium course. A wind gust knocked over a fence. FRH Butts Avedon had one rail down after a short break that put him in sixteenth place in the individual competition. Shamwari and Ludwig Svennerstal closely followed European Champion Michael Jung and won team silver with Sweden. Photos: Rau Jürgen Stuhtmann (centre) cheered on “his” FRH Escada JS in Malmö. 4 The Hanoverian 10|2013 Escada JS – as a five-year old – became Vice-Bundeschampion. FRH Escada JS was Vice World Champion of event horses as a seven-year old in Le Lion d’Angers before she finally came to Ingrid Klimke. Today’s rider, the national trainers and the breeder – all know it all started with trainer Andreas Brandt. “It is amazing how well Andreas Brandt introduces young horses to competitions and how he gives them great self-confidence,” national trainer Hans Melzer highlighted at the Bundeschampionate when he commentated the ride of Andreas Brandt on Charlize who is a mare from Mecklenburg (third place in the division for six-year olds) and reminded the audience of his training successes with FRH Escada JS. The national trainer took a great risk in Sweden and succeeded using only horses that had never competed for Germany, “The horses already had good results; a championship however is something different.” Even the weather conditions were unable to stop the German success. The team rode to victory in pouring rain with stormy gusts. Michael Jung was unbeatable once again and dominated the entire competition. He confirmed his absolute hegemony with Halunke by Heraldik xx/ Jugol and confirmed his second European individual title after winning World Championship gold and Olympic gold. FRH Butts Avedon by Heraldik xx/Kronenkranich xx (breeder: Friedrich Butt, Bülkau) and rider Andreas Dibowski were reserve rider/horse combination at the Olympic Games last year. The pair held their first official international championship debut in Malmö – almost exactly on the day five years after their victory at the Bundeschampionate. An additional peculiarity: Andreas Dibowski competed in a European Championship for the first time in Burghley in 1997. He rode FRH The European Championships turned into a dream competition for Shamwari by Star Regent xx/Der Clou (breeder: Gita Zühlsdorf, Mühlheim). The eleven-year old Hessian gelding and his young Swedish rider Ludwig Svennerstal finished the dressage in third position after a personal best close behind titleholder Michael Jung. The pair had 0,4 time faults on the cross-country course. The young rider showed nerves on the stadium course. Two rails fell and the 23-year old with his mount Shamwari finished his first European Championships on 10th place. This result was sufficient to secure the silver medal for team Sweden. Sara AlgotssonOstholt rode Reality by Rabino/Prince Thatch xx (breeder: Hans Bruening, Garbsen). The pair was in fifth position after dressage and cross-country and winning an individual medal was still in the realm of possibilities. Eight penalty points on the stadium course dropped the pair down to fourteenth position. n FRH Butts Avedon and Andreas Dibowski complete the cross-country course with a top performance at the European Championships. Sport A collection of medals Germany’s riders brought home three team medals in dressage and jumping as well as three titles and eight medals at the Para-Equestrians from the European Championships in Herning in August. By Britta Züngel F inally back at the top: The German dressage team succeeded in winning the team title again after eight years and after a serious dressage battle in Herning. All four team members banked on the proven and very popular D-blood. Desperados FRH by De Niro/Wolkenstein II (breeder: Herbert Schütt, Hemmoor) under Kristina Sprehe, D’Agostino by De Niro/Shogun xx (breeder: Wilhelm Lahmann, Dassendorf) under Fabienne Lütkemeier, Don Johnson FRH by Don Frederico/Warkant (breeder: Ulrike Meyer, Dedelstorf) under Isabell Werth and Damon Hill NRW by Donnerhall/ Rubinstein with Helen Langehanenberg linked up with their successes of prior days. D’Agostino and Don Johnson FRH held a comfortable lead after the Grand Prix on the first day; Damon Hill NRW delivered a sensational test after Desperados FRH had made a small mistake; it meant winning the muchdesired title. The Netherlands won silver and Great Britain bronze. Half Moon Delphi by Dimaggio/ Westwall (breeder: Julie and john Deverille, Shaftsbury, Great Britain) was a member of the British team. Michael George Eilberg rode the mare in her championship debut. Desperados FRH and Kristina Sprehe had every reason to celebrate after the Grand Prix Special-ride. The pair placed fifth with a refreshing and expressive performance and were the second-best German horse/rider combination. Fabienne Lütkemeier had every reason to be more than just content with her faultless performance in the Special. She became a team member because Anabel Balkenhol had to withdraw Dablino FRH because of an injury. “This was gigantic. So far my best result,” student Fabienne Lütkemeier shouted out with joy after finishing in ninth place. Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven from Sweden finished in eighth place on Don Auriello by Don Davidoff/White Star (breeder: Joachim Poppe, Harsefeld). Placing 15th Minna Tilde qualified for the freestyle final on Santana by Sandro Hit/Rubinstein (breeder: Ingo Pape, Hemmoor). It was not a good day for Isabell Werth and Don Johnson! The pair did not qualify for the final of the fifteen best because of mistakes and disobediences. Olympic champion Valegro with rider Charlotte Dujardin became European Champion in front of Damon Hill NRW with rider Helen Langehanenberg followed by Parzival and Adelinde Cornelissen. It is certainly noteworthy that all three medal winners went of course! The exciting freestyle ended with top scores: Valegro and Charlotte Dujardin won with more than 91 percent. Desperados FRH performed very well. Kristina Sprehe rode the privately owned sire and impressed with her accuracy. The pair finished in fifth place just like the day before. This particular freestyle was performed for the last time. The pair will perform a new and more difficult one next year. Don Auriello finished in ninth place; D’Agostino followed in tenth, Santana in eleventh and Half Moon Delphi in 15th position. Hanover had the largest contingent of dressage competitors. 16 of the 65 participants carried the Hanoverian foal brand; an additional 25 horses originated out of a Hanoverian damline. Success in dressage with D-blood: Fabienne Lütkemeier, Kristina Sprehe, Helen Langehanenberg and Isabell Werth. Bronze for Sweden: Gotha FRH and Henrik von Eckermann. Photos: Rau Two Hanoverians – Two medals The Hanoverian 10|2013 5 Sport Only two Hanoverians participated in the jumper division. Both returned home with a medal. After the Nation Cup the German team was overjoyed winning the silver medal. After a rough start (4th place) the team successfully and impressively caught up so much that they almost won the title! Codex One by Contendro/Glückspilz (breeder: Wilhelm Bergmann, Stolzenau) and rider Christian Ahlmann did their part; they had a nerve-wracking faultless second round. The other team members were Cornet d‘Amour with rider Daniel Deusser, Corradina with Carsten-Otto Nagel and Chiara with Ludger Beerbaum. Team Beerbaums second rider also won a medal. Gotha FRH by Goldfever/ Prestige Pilot (breeder: Jan Minners, Jork) and Henrik von Eckermann competed for Sweden. The Swedish team took home the bronze medal after a double clear round for Gotha FRH. Codex One and Christian Ahlmann became Vice European Champion with the German team. The British team became European champions by a very, very small margin of 0,59 penalty points. The individual medals were awarded to Castle Forbes Myrtille Paulois and Roger Yves Bost (gold), Cella and Ben Maher (silver) and Hello Sanctos and Scott Brash (bronze). Codex One and Christian Ahlmann finished the championships in twelfth position. “I reached my goal and won a medal with the team. The final was tough and I did not do well enough,” the rider summarized. Dual European Champion The Para-Equestrians were a part of the European Championships for the first time. The participants were divided into five grades in respect to the severity of the disability. Hannelore Brenner became the European Champion in the individual competition at grade III on Women of the World by World Disney/Pik Bube (breeder: Enno Knabbe, Loxstedt). The pair won silver in the freestyle. Germany’s team also finished in second place behind team gold winner Britain. The German team consisted of Ariva-Avanti by Alabaster/Florestan (breeder: ZG Engel, Fulda-Niederrode) with rider Dr. Angelika Trabert who also won both silver medals in the individual and the freestyle competition at grade II and the championship newcomers Regaliz by Rubinero/Davignon (breeder: Hans-Jürgen Meyer, Nottuln-Darup) and rider Elke Philipp. Laponio by Laurentio/Hohenstein (breeder: Heinrich Eckhoff, Beckdorf) was a member of the bronze medal team from Denmark with his rider Line Kongensgaard. This pair also won the individual bronze medal in grade IV; they were the best Danish participants. Photos: Rau Sport An exceptional talent: Chipmunk Chipmunk won the Bundeschampionate for five-year olds in cross-country with rider Julia Krajewski succeeding Corona with rider Sandra Auffarth. Both horses have the same sire: Contendro. By Rolf Hillmann T he final outcome at the Bundeschampionate for event horses was as follows from a Hanoverian point of view: a victory and four placements in the division for five-year olds and additional placements in the six-year old division; furthermore the strongest contingent of all breed associations in qualifying a total of 12 horse-rider combinations for the finals in both age groups. A repeat of events: Exactly a year ago a Hanoverian horse had also attracted all the attention in the five-year old division. Her name was Corona by Contendro/Garibaldi II. The rider was the then newly crowned Olympic team champion Sandra Auffarth. Corona became the federal championess; her description was filled with superlatives. This year the sire of the five-year old federal champion is Contendro, too. The much sought-after event horse producer Heraldik xx is the grand-sire on the dam side of Chipmunk’s pedigree. Rising cadre member Julia Krajewski presented Chipmunk beautifully. She qualified the large chestnut for the final. He started on the cross-country course on Sunday with good scores from dressage (7,6) and from jumping (8,1). 21 additional horses competed for the sought-after title including six Hanoverians. For instance Butts Lennox who won the small final. The prefix to his name allows for the assumption that he descends from the famous breeding program of Fritz Butt. He is owned by Professor Volker Steinkraus. Unfortunately Butts Lennox had a refusal at the coffin that led to his elimination in the big final. His owner commented, “Not so serious! Butts Lennox is almost 100% a Thoroughbred and will continue to develop.” His rider Anna Siemer presented a second Hanoverian in the big final called Valerie M, who finished the competition in twelfth position because of a weak dressage performance. The mare showed her good qualities on the stadium course (8,0) and on the cross-country course (7,6) even though she was a little resistant while approaching fences and especially when her rider tried to take over more control. A good horse though that has entered the sport late in life and therefore needs time to mature! On the way to winning the championship title of five-year old event horses: Chipmunk by Contendro/ Heraldik with Julia Krajewski. Photo: Hogrebe Saint Germain by Santino/Londonderry finished on a good fifth place with experienced rider Elmar Lesch who presented him in his usual professional way. The chestnut gelding impressed on the crosscountry course with big canter strides and powerful jumping ability after having had good scores in dressage and stadium. He remained controllable even in the turns and in front of the fences. His attitude and his ambition were remarkable. Valentino Now took seventh place. After Valerie M and Valentine in the division for 6-year olds Valentino Now follows as the third Valentino descendant by Now or Never in the eventing finals at the Bundeschampionate. Sandra Auffarth rode Valentino Now. The large-framed chestnut presented himself well at Hanover’s Jumper Horse Championships and participated in Verden’s 129th elite auction now performed above average in dressage (8,3) and did well in stadium jumping (7,7); however he was unable to stay within the on the cross-country course time limit. He jumped big but did not cover enough ground. Chipmunk won the title Bundeschampion with good scores in dressage and stadium jumping and with a cross-country score of The Hanoverian 10|2013 7 Sport 8,9 which only the second-placed horse Kerry (OS by Canto/Consul) under rider Beeke Jankowski was able to beat. The judges and commentators Horst Karsten, Hans Wallmeier, Gerhard Moser and national trainer Hans Melzer saw a horse with a huge canter Stride. He was extremely rideable in the turns and brilliantly fulfilled all the technical demands in spite of his young age. Not for one second did he give the impression he could not handle the jumps. All eventing enthusiasts were thrilled watching him go. The story of Chipmunk (see insert) appears almost incredible taking his performance in Warendorf into consideration. The best six-year old Hanoverian on cross-country was Valentine by Valentino/Varus with rider Nadine Marzahl. Photo: Hogrebe Another Hanoverian finished in thirteenth position. Sara Algotsson-Ostholt presented Fräcke Findus by Favoritas xx/Embassy. He was unable to move up in the ranks with his cross-country performance inspite of acceptable scores in dressage and jumping (7,0 and 7,7). Even though the horse was very ambitious and jumped well he lacked rideability. At times it looked like a loss of control; the judges scored this with a 7,0. and dropped into the canter at the medium trot in dressage (7,3). She could have achieved better scores in jumping, too. She was the horse everybody remembered on the cross-country course: above average jumping ability, constant, high and rhythmical tempo, efficient canter and always positive – and the judges liked it too and gave it a score of 8,4, fourth place. Hans Melzer evaluates Valentine similarly to a horse with an international career ahead of it. The judges saw Crisby by Contendro/ Sandro with rider Anna Christina Roessler as the winner of the cross-country phase with a score of 9,2(!). The dark brown gelding had no chance of a top placement or even an overall victory because of a pretty bad jumping performance (4,8). Crisby finished in sixth place in the end ahead of the canter-machine Frieda S by For Edition/Laptop under rider Stephanie Boehe and Suspicious Glow by Stalypso/Heraldik xx under Jens Borgmann. Here the judges would have liked to have seen more uniformity in respect to the tempo. n A reunion with Valentine We had a reunion with last year’s vice Bundeschampion Valentine by Valentino/Varus with rider Nadine Marzahl in the final of the six-year olds. Nadine Marzahl now has the horse at her disposal without any restrictions. Valentine had bad luck A dreamlike pedigree Chipmunk by Contendro/Heraldik xx out of the jumper-horse breeding program of Dr. Hilmer Meyer-Kulenkampff in Behlmer is a horse “made for international 3-day eventing”, according to national trainer Hans Melzer who has evidently fallen in love with the large bay. Hans Melzer and the national trainer for ponies called Peter Teuwen have watched Chipmunk’s career as an event horse right from the very beginning. It was Peter Teeuwen who pointed out this son of Contendro with the enormous canter stride to his colleague. Chipmunk was four years old at the time. Not much later Julia Krajewski went to see Chipmunk when she was in the neighborhood. On her trip back she took him to Warendorf. As everyone knows papers and pedigrees are patient. In Chipmunk’s case the pedigree predestinates him for eventing. And it came true on his first cross-country course. Chip- 8 The Hanoverian 10|2013 munk galloped powerfully, jumped bravely and showed off three basic gaits that left no doubt in his suitability for eventing. Everything happened according to plan until colic threatened his life this last January. Surgery was inevitable and Chipmunk fought just as he fights under saddle. He recovered quickly. The riders who try to qualify a horse for the Bundeschampionate know just how important the first six months of the year are to succeed. This did not apply to Chipmunk. He started to compete quite late because of the surgery. He participated in a suitability class at end of May and was entered in an event horse class in June that he finished with top scores. “ I do not like to push a horse or ask a lot of a horse too soon. If I had thought for one moment the work could be too much for him, I would have stopped immediately,” Ju- lia Krajewski explains. Chipmunk took away every doubt completing his qualification with self-confidence that is so characteristic for him. He is confident in everything he does.” The owner, the Hannoveraner Verband (FRH), the national trainer and the rider – everyone agrees that this horse has all the prerequisites for a big career that they all would like to make possible through smart management and safety precautions. Chipmunk is not for sale in the coming years. It was impressive how relaxed the stallion was before the competition and during the award ceremony: He very clearly greatly enjoyed that. The judges gave out the same score in the second qualification. Once on the grounds of the DOKR the qualification favorites are all too often unable of succeeding in the deciding final – not so Sandokan. Sandokan impressed with his flawless style. The judges were near to giving him the perfect score of 10,0 after the second round. “We would have loved to have given him a higher score but we had to make a Twenty-four Hanoverians participated in the first qualification for the Bundeschampionate. Holstein had the largest contingent of representatives with 31 horses. Five Hanoverians succeeded in qualifying directly for the final of the best 30; Eddy E by Escudo/Stakkato and his rider Jan-Philipp Weichert made use of the small final to move on. The final was difficult. Both qualifications took a lot out of the five-year olds. Many horses left the stadium course without a score. Cornwall by Cornet Obolensky/Contender confirmed his excellent performance from the first round (8,6) in the second (8,7). He participated in the final as the secondbest horse of his age group. Cornwall is a grey stallion and proved to still have plenty of energy in him for the final with rider Christian Kukuk. The judges confirmed his performance with a score of 8,9, the second best score of the day. He made a small mistake on the second round that put him in fifth place overall. Semper Fi by Stakkato/Grannus was unable to link up with his performances in the qualifications. After a good start the reigning Hanoverian jumper horse champion had problems in the triple combination. 14th position for the privately owned stallion and his rider Gilbert Böckmann! The championships for six-year olds were decided by faults and time only for the first time. The youngsters had to complete a jumper horse class at the M-level with a minimum score of 8,0 to be able to participate in Warendorf. 163 horses managed to do so including 35 Hanoverians; nine of which qualified for the final. Fifty percent of the participants had a faultless first round. The degree of difficulty increased considerably in the second round. Only 21 out of 160 participants remained faultless. For Treasure by For Pleasure/Escudo and rider Maximilian Gräfe were one of the fastest horse-rider combinations in the first qualification. They won the third group. Celle’s state stud sire Sport Inliner by Iberio/Sao Paulo won a division in the second qualification with rider Eva Bitter. A daring ride in the final The final was thrilling. Stadium course designer Eckhard Hilker set up a fair course with several challenging questions especially on the final third of the course. Only nine six-year olds made it into the jump-off. If a victory is at stake, Hanoverians are fast: four of the participants in the jump-off carried the Hanoverian foal brand. Cinsey by Contendro/For Pleasure was probably the most eyecatching horse of the group. Mandy Goosen from Great Britain presented the bay with his generous ability and his exemplary bascule. She directed him to the ideal take-off spot at every fence with a light hand allowing him to show off his perfect style. This pair finished on the ungrateful fourth place without penalty points. Qinghai by Quidam de Revel/Cordalme Z (OS) and rider Guido Klatte were the last competitors and won the Bundeschampionate with a daring ride. The pair had to take the road via the small final to get to the end. Miriam Schneider rode the Holstein Caillou by Casall/Corrado into second place and Philip Rüping rode Zaminta by Cormint/Alboretto (Holst.) into third. In 6th, 7th and eighth place were Edelmann by Escudo/ Stakkato – a full-brother to five-year old Eddy E – with rider Philip Weichert, Inliner with Eva Bitter and Clementine RS by Catoki/Laptop with Lennert Hauschild followed. A fantastic performance! “I am really excited; that was a fantastic performance!” Breeder Hans-Werner Schubert can hardly believe that “his” Sandokan won the Bundeschampionate. “Eva Bitter rode brilliantly. It is so important for a horse to get into the hands of the right rider.” Hans-Werner Schubert rebuilt the farm of the family in Hohenhenningen in former East Germany after the reunification. He now has a breeding operation consisting of ten broodmares with the most sought-after jumper horse pedigrees and their offspring. The 62-year old takes care of around 40 horses every day. He starts the horses on the lunge line and supervises the training of his jumper talents. He has concrete ideas, “I focus on competition. Performance ability is most important to me!” Hans-Werner Schubert bought Geona R, the granddam of Sandokan, in foal from Dr. Karl-Otto Jacobs. Dam Lare was born in Hohenhenningen. The A championship for 7-year olds was introduced as a pilot program. It was a very interesting option and 60 horse/rider combinations took advantage of it. Six out of nine Hanoverians qualified for the final. Argelith Squid by Salito/Gibraltar performed brilliantly in the first two qualifying classes. He placed third in the Bundeschampionate two years ago. Last year he finished the Hanoverian Jumper Horse Championships in third place, too. In the meantime Eva Bitter has competed the grey internationally. He placed third and fourth in the qualifications and had a jumping fault that dropped him back to 18th position in Warendorf in the end. Ten seven-year olds competed in the jump-off. Thomas Brandt and his homebred Hessian mare Cantara by Cristo/Cassone – last year’s Hanoverian jumper horse champion – handled the course with caution and ambition and remained faultless: third place! Lannaro by Larino/Kannan (OS) and rider Mandy Goosen found the best line followed by the Westphalian Colestus by Cornet Obolensky/Stakkato and Michael Beckmann. Privately owned sire Campus by Calido/Matcho AA attracted a lot of attention. He placed fourth behind Cantara by 0,8 seconds with his rider Sandra Auffarth. Hanoverian jumper horses had convincing performances in all age groups. The quality of competitors at the top and also overall has never been as good in Warendorf as this year. n Norm line came to the farm with this purchase. It is a line well respected for its jumper qualities. Firth of Lorne, Check In and Elwood have numerous international successes to show for. “Lare is a bundle of energy. She was reserve championess as a foal on the foal show in Wittingen. We decided to never sell her,” Hans-Werner Schubert explains. He is convinced of the pedigree; after all he has bred five mares to Sandokan. “The devil must have his hand in it, if this stallion is not a good producer.” Cinsey by Contendro/For Pleasure finished in fourth place in the sixyear old division with rider Mandy Goosen. Photo: Frieler standing test and very good presentations breeders did not give Sandokan much attention during the past breeding season. Even victories in jumper horse classes under Eva Bitter did not help. After a rather unspectacular performance at the Hanoverian Jumper Horse Championships in Verden in August the idea of selling him did arise. “After winning the qualification in Warendorf Paul Schockemöhle made me an offer on Sandokan that I could not reject,” Dr. Axel Brockmann explains. He let the stallion go. Britta Züngel Sandokan’s star rose at the stallion performance test of 2012 in Adelheidsdorf. His stallion performance test breed value of 145 points made the four-year old the best jumper stallion of the year nationwide. He received a score of 9,17 for his predisposition for jumping. Dr. Axel Brockmann bought the black as a foal from the breeder for the state stud. “He was still immature as a three-year old. We saw his jumper talent and gave him another year to grow up.” In spite of an out- Spartan Stakkato Gottilde Pygmalion Pia Goldfever Landor S Lare Geona R Servus Landadel Fureida 2 Graf Grannus Doloris The Hanoverian 10|2013 11 Sport The challenges in Warendorf The young dressage horses not only had to deal with the competitive challenges while competing for medals but also with other special circumstances; for instance the weather. Hannover won a vice championship title. By Dr. Enno Hempel T Sean Connery by Sir Donnerhall/Rotspon became Vice Champion in the division for six-year olds with rider Therese Nilshagen. Photo: Frieler he change in weather from one day to the next could not have been any bigger than at this year’s Bundeschampionate. Extreme high late summer temperatures of more than 30’C in the beginning were followed by fall weather with half of the temperature digits and vast amounts of rain that turned even the first-class dressage ring at the DOKR into a pond-like setting. But then again Warendorf has seen worse and the perfect organization was able to guarantee first-rate conditions through making use of every possible resource. The improvement-screw is turned up a notch every year! This year the distance between the stands and the ring was enlarged to reduce the feeling of riding in the witches’ cauldron. Holga Finken is one of the most experienced championship participants and commented on the efforts of the organizers, “The riding ring was a lot more pleasant, the changes made a big difference and also entering the ring was easier. The long tube was dangerous especially during the award ceremonies.” The horses and the riders experienced dramatic changes from a competitive perspective: Five days in a strange environment, strange barns and strange training rings; increasing demands in the tests and then, after the hot first days, to still have enough energy for the finals – it clearly reached the borderline of being doable for many youngsters! It was also hard for the winner of the silver medal in the six-year old division called Sean Connery by Sir Donnerhall/Rotspon and his rider Therese Nilshagen. The pair placed fifteenth out of 47 participants in the final qualification on Wednesday. Sean Connery was the second competitor in the small final on Friday and moved up to third place. He also competed in the final as the second competitor the following day. The stallion with his very pronounced neck had to compete in the pouring rain in front of a wall of umbrellas. The judges awarded this ride a score of 8,6. He received a score of 9,5 for his canter that was the highlight of his performance. Christoph Hess, the ever so brilliant commentator, remarked, “Movement through the body with secure connection – the horse is very comfortable in this gait and jumped four clean changes.” Beatrice Buchwald had a start-to-finish victory. The professional rider from the barn of Isabell Werth has been is well known since the World Championships in Verden; she rode the Rhineland stallion Lord Carnaby by Lord Loxley/Rocket Star. The new titleholder finished the qualification with a score of 9,0 and won the final with 9,2. Hanover had the strongest contingent in the division for six-year olds, too; 20 out of 47 participants. Laura Stigler had the best performance on Double You W by Don Romantic/Rohdiamant. The champion of the final qualification at the World Championships in Verden made it into the finals directly as the best competitor of the second group in the qualification for the final. The pair finished on the ungrateful fourth place with a score of 8,4, 1/10 of a point below the third placed contestant. The following horses also qualified directly for the final: Last year’s bronze medal winner Bobcat by Breitling W/Silvano with rider Isabelle Bache placed third in the first group and finished the final in tenth position. The third-placed competitors of the second group Rubin by Royal Blend/Wolkenstein II with Stefanie Wittmann finishing in 6th place and Royal Sid by Royal Blend/Wenzel II with Maren Bentes. Photo: Beelitz with Esther Maruhn, Secret Love by Sir Donnerhall/ Rotspon with Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn and Santiago by Stedinger/Dacaprio with Christian Flamm who finished the final in tenth place. An innovation was offered to all participants who had already qualified for the final. They were allowed to compete in the small final to familiarize the horses with the ring. Hardly anyone made use of this option. The others worked hard to catch up. Mike Habermann experienced a déjà-vu moment with a somewhat unfortunate outcome – just like last year. After a 22nd position in the first test he placed fifth in the small final on Don Darius by Don Frederico/Marcus Deak xx; this qualified him for the final that he finished in ninth place. The degree of difficulty increased considerably from test to test. Most mastered the increases well. The presence of supervising judges in the warm-up area was successful. The presentations in the rings reflected proper training methods. Considerably more five-year olds The number of competitors in the five-year old division was much higher than the number of competitors in the six-year old division. This was very different last year. Almost half (27) of the 60 participants were Hanoverians. Nine placed in the top 16 of the final qualification but unfortunately none of them won a medal. Wolfhard Witte received the best placement. He finished the final with a score of 8,3, fifth place with Celle’s state stud sire Quaterhall (after winning bronze twice) – he should have won a medal. The chestnut stallion by Quaterback/Donnerhall presented himself in perfect connection with perfect rideability and quality of movement in both the qualification (4th place) and the final. Especially the final score of 8,0 for supple- ness seemed a bit low. Holga Finken rode Simply Red by Sir Donnerhall/Wolkenstein II into sixth place after having placed second of the second group in the qualification. The pair had experienced the stress of loosing a shoe and a start delay. The rider was satisfied with the final result of 8,2 for his ride on the impressive chestnut because of these unforeseeable problems. Once again the Bundeschampion reached the final via the small final. The winner of the small final was also the federal champion. It was the Oldenburg QC Flamboyant by Fidertanz/De Niro with rider Marita Pundsack. The pair won with a score of 8,7. Sir Heinrich by Sir Donnerhall/Fuerst Heinrich was vice champion. Two horses shared bronze: the winner of the qualification called Soiree de Saumur by San Amour/Latimer and the Westphalian mare For Comtess Royal NG by Florencio/ Show Star. Other direct-qualifiers were Lance Armstrong by Londontime/ Weltmeyer with rider Esther Maruhn (10th place in the final), Rochee K by Royal Blend/ Fabriano with Matthias Klatt and Loveliness by Lord Loxley/Latimer with rider Charlotte Rummenigge. Stella Charlott Roth rode her Dubarry by Don Frederico/Londonderry into tenth place in the final after having placed second in the small final. A year ago we pursued some statistics at this place in THE HANOVERIAN. Today it shows how interesting it is to follow up. The scoring standard in the five-year old division was as follows: an 8,1 was sufficient for the final qualification (the number in parenthesis are for 2012 = 8,4); the average was 8,3 (8,62). It was sufficient for a six-year old to receive a score of 7,8 (8,0) to qualify directly for the final; the average here was 8,14 (8,23). n The Hanoverian 10|2013 13 Sport Two radiating silver medal winners Two silver medals for Hanoverian stallions and a bronze medal for the mare Fresh Chili at Warendorf’s Riding Horse Championships. By Julia Martin First silver medal winner: Coal Diamond with Jessica Lynn Andersson. Photos: Lafrentz 14 The Hanoverian 10|2013 T o say it up front: There was no radiating Hanoverian champion at this year’s Bundeschampionate for Riding Horses as we have seen in previous years like for instance Lemony’s Nicket in 2010 or Franziskus in 2012. We saw talents that impressed with solid performances and showed great potential for their future careers. Three Hanoverians participated in the division for three-year old stallions. In addition to the actual Bundeschampion who is the Rhineland stallion Fürst Fohlenhof by Fidertanz, Coal Diamond by Christ/Don Schufro attracted attention in the qualifying class. The dark bay premium sire impressed at his licensing in 2012 and changed ownership to Breeding Farm Sprehe as one of the highest priced stallions on the stallion market. Jessica Lynn Andersson beautifully presented the first-rate athlete in Warendorf’s riding horse ring. The pair scored 8,6 and was the second pair to qualify for the final. The pair performed brilliantly during the competition. The stallion impressed with his very elastic and lively basic gaits of high quality. The group of judges saw this the same way and commentator Dr. Martin Plewa summarized, “Coal Diamond moved in rhythm with good active hind legs jumping underneath his body in an impressive fashion. Therefore we gave him a 9,0 for his trot and canter.” Coal Diamond was turned over to the guest riders Miriam Becher Sport and Marcus Hermes with a total of 43 points; they gave him 18 points together. He was proclaimed vice-champion with this result. The Westphalian Equitaris by Estobar NRW – a participant in the 129th elite auction, catalog number 2 – just missed the final with his rider/breeder Stephan Borgmann placing fourth overall. Smirnoff by Sir Donnerhall/ Florencio sold as a foal for a high price tag on Verden’s elite auction in 2010. He completed the Hanoverian Championships 2013 with rider AnnaMaria Köpke in Verden in third place and finished the qualification for the Bundeschampionate in seventh position. High quality The quality in the group of stallions that were a year older was high. The athletes ranged very closely together. The qualification scores promised an exciting final: Last year’s champion Escolar was Bundeschampion with rider Hermann Burger in front of Danzarino OLD with rider Katrin Burger. The Hanoverian premium sire in 2011 called Bodyguard and rider Jana Freund shared third place and the score of 8,5 with DSP Belantis and rider AnnaSophie Fiebelkorn. The approved Fürst Nymphenburg II with rider Johanna Klippert took fifth place together with the Rhineland Stanford with rider Stefanie Wolf. Both received the score of 8,40. Celle’s state stud sire Sarotti Mocca-Sahne by Soliman de Hus/Lauries Crusador xx and rider Mike Habermann received a score of 8,3 – not enough to qualify for the finals. This was a shame because the dark bay beauty was one of the eye-catchers in this group and the spectators would have loved to have seen this attractive pair return. Dancing World by Dancier/Wolkenstein, also a participant in the upcoming 129th elite auction in October, and rider Sandra Frieling who had left the Hanoverian Championship in Verden as champions with a score of 9,1 did not perform to their full potential and placed tenth. Bodyguard by Burlington/Pik L. impressed with his qualities in the final part A. Judge and commentator Dr. Dietrich Plewa raved, “The appearance of this chestnut stallion does not leave anything to be desired for. He is just simply a superb type.” 9,0 for his conformation! He also impressed with his basic gaits: He was in rhythm and industrious and productive in his extensions in the trot and in the canter which was rewarded with the score of 8,5 for both. He received a 9,0 for his ground-covering and relaxed walk. Bodyguard and Jana Freund qualified for the B-final with a total of 43,5 points. The guest riders Philipp Hess and Miriam Becher liked the dapper Hanoverian and added 18 points; this meant the silver medal for Bodyguard. Danziano OLD received the same amount of points and also received a silver medal. Colorful umbrellas unfortunately distracted Fürst Nymphenburg II greatly during the first part of the final. He finished the competition in fifth place. Mares and geldings The result changed from qualification to final in the division for three-year olds: Charlotte by Christ/ Sir Caletto with rider Rieke Schnieder won the first test with a score of 8,6 followed by two additional Hanoverians called Fresh Chili also with Rieke Schnieder (8,5) and Fleur by Floriscount/Wild Dance with Lena Berwe (8,4). Fleur and Charlotte fell behind against all expectations in the final. Both appeared flat and exhausted; this resulted in a fourth and a fifth place. Fresh Chili by Fürst Romancier/Rotspon on the other hand impressed again with lofty, animated and supple movement and received the top scores of the day for her ground-covering and rhythmical walk; 9,5. Fresh Chili appeared a little distracted here and there under her rider; she turned into a model student under the guest riders that earned her 18 points and the bronze medal. Damon’s Dream JHH and Sandra Frieling won gold. The division of four-year olds is the largest group by tradition and 32 participants this year. Danza by Dimaggio/Rubin-Royal with rider Julia-Katharina von Platen finished the qualification in second place (8,2). Hofprinz by Hofrat/De Noir followed in fourth place with rider Katrine Kraglund (8,1). The final was overshadowed by a storm and downpours and many youngsters lost their concentration. Danza fell back to seventh place with Hofprinz right behind her. Cindy OLD with rider Hermann Gerdes won gold in front of the Trakehner Brancusi with Monika Mittermayer. n Silver medal winner Bodyguard by Burlington/Pik L. with rider Jana Freund. Breeding Sport Verden is the goal Dressage horses are his passion; his trust for successful marketing lies in Verden’s auction centre: Klaus Michaelis from Basdahl. By Julia Martin N umber 7: Royal Rose – the reigning championess of the Herwart von der Decken-Show 2013 in the class for mares with dressage talent and a state’s premium aspirant. Number 40: London – a three-year old chestnut gelding by Londontime; athletic and out of the best dam line. Number 64: Baron Bernstein – a three-year old son of Bonifatius with elastic movement and active hindquarters. Three participants in Verden’s 129th elite auction – three Hanoverians out of Klaus Michaelis’ breeding program! The words of the Hanoverian breeder from Basdahl carry great weight. Basdahl is located in the district of Rotenburg, “It always has been and still is my goal to market my horses in Verden!” Proof of show successes on the walls. 16 The Hanoverian 10|2013 The red brick house hides behind the main street. The clearly visibly H that is attached to the gable of the large indoor arena signals that Hanoverian horses live on this more than 100 year old farm. Family Michaelis have lived in Basdahl since 1923. The grandfather had a special interest in horses. “Then the horse gene jumped a generation. My parents had milk cows, pigs and farmed the land. We did not have any horses at that time,” the 56year old head of the family explains. It became clear to him that horses and the sport of riding were to play a significantly larger role in his life very early on. Klaus Michaelis discovered his aptitude for equestrian sports when he started vaulting at the age of seven. He changed to riding horses later on. Uncle Friedo Michaelis is also a true horseman and wanted to support the talent of his nephew and gave him a chestnut mare by Duft as a gift. Uncle Friedo Michaelis is over 80 years of age and still attends Verden’s auctions. Klaus Michaelis started to work on the parental farm after completing a 3-year agricultural training program and he initiated a small horse-breeding program on the side. His wife Irma came to the farm in 1978 and has been a valuable partner ever since, “First I helped milk cows. Now I support my husband with the horse-breeding program. That’s normal!” They have three daughters called Vanessa (35), Ricarda (30) and Diana (27). The two older ones run a store for horse supplies and riding apparel called “Klaus Michaelis” in Basdahl. Vanessa helps her parents with the horses. She is moving back to the farm with her family at the moment to be closer to the horse activities. “We built a new cow barn at the end of the 70s. We had no horses for 5 years because of space limitations,” the farmer remembers; he still today works in the local dairy 15 days a month. He is responsible for the milk tank-lorry trips. The family stopped the milkcow operation in 1991 and then had space for the horses. A new beginning with impressive quality Klaus Michaelis was tired of not having any horses in the early 80´s. One thing was for certain though: If a new beginning, then only with very good quality! He found just that at the farm of August Brockmeier in Loxstedt. Her name was Gilta; she was three years old and descended from Grenadier/Lukas. “Gilta was a long-legged chestnut mare with good movement. I liked her right away. I paid almost 10,000 German Marks for her. Everybody in the village talked about the purchase price,” Michaelis says with a smirk. Gilta was awar- Breeding Sport ded Ia-prizes four times at mare shows in Bremervoerde. She was class champion at her debut in 1986 – a proof of her quality. The new owner rode the mare in riding horse classes to be able to best evaluate her rideability and obtained top results. “I started all my horses under saddle and presented them on shows for many years.” Klaus Michaelis knows all too well about the importance of riding attributes. “It is important to me that the youngsters gain experiences on horse shows. I also want to offer the best-possible advice to my customers.” Gilta delivered 12 foals. Breeding her to Weltmeyer, the sire of the century, proved to be especially successful: Wake Up and Whitney B won blue ribbons in the dressage ring up to the S-level. Six of Gilta’s descendants found new owners through Verden’s auction program. Daughter Harmonie by Hohenstein took Gilta’s place in the breeding program. She brought great honor to her dam, became a state’s premium mare, was class champion several times and delivered ten foals. G-blood for a good foundation Breeder Klaus Michaelis had had the best experiences with Gilta. With this knowledge in mind he started looking for a broodmare after some time. “I like the Grenadier-blood very much. When I saw Gitta at Breeder Eduard Schröder here in Basdahl, I knew right away that I wanted her,” the horseman still raves today. Gitta by Grenadier/Washington was also an athletic chestnut lady. She was decorated with the Ia-prize five times. The liver chestnut delivered 19 foals in a row; each was a picture-perfect Hanoverian! For instance Wyoming: The chestnut by Weltmeyer sold for 50,000 Euros on Verden’s elite auction in 1999. He won the bronze medal at the Bundeschampionate for five-year old dressage horses with Dr. Nicole Deinzer. He participated in the World Championships for young dressage horses one year later finishing the final in sixth place. Successes at S-level followed. Michaelis was awarded the Hans Joachim KoehlerPrize as one of the most successful provider of auction horses during the spring auction in 2012. 36 horses from the Michaelis barn have found new homes through Verden’s auction program including Donny M by Don Frederico who sold for 200,000 Euros in 2005. Klaus Michaelis has clear ideas when selecting stallions, “We spend our annual vacation on the Bundeschampionate. It is important to me to view the horses under saddle in comparison to fellow competitors. I prefer standing at the warm-up ring. There you can see which stallions are made and which dispose of natural qualities.” Good elastic movement, an attractive type and most importantly a relaxed interior are the most decisive criteria for him. Klaus Michaelis raises six foals every year; he buys one or two. “Many of the foals I buy are discovered on my milk deliveries. I have acquired a good eye for horses that are marketable in Verden,” he explains. Potential must be recognizable but the training is just as important to him. “Saving money on account of good rideability is a mistake,” so Klaus Michaelis who is very grateful to his employee Anne-Kathrin Pohlmeier. The independent horse professional spends half a day on the facility riding four to five youngsters daily. “The nice thing about the horses in the barn is that all have a good disposition. They love to work and learn. I always return home from horse shows with ribbons; this gives us all the feeling that we are doing something right,” 26-year old Anne-Kathrin Pohlmeier shares with joy. n Offered for sale on the 129th EliteAuction: London from Michaelis’ farm. Three of Gittas daughters are now part of the Klaus Michaelis’ breeding operation; the St. Pr. mares Weltmariechen, Waluga and Walencia. Weltmaerchen has already set herself a breed monument with her two daughters by Dancier, St.Pr.A. Donna Diana and St.Pr.St. Delicious Dea. She delivered auction horse Belinda M by Belissimo M who changed ownership on Verden’s elite auction in 2008 for 170,000 Euros. Walencia was bred by Royal Classic and delivered the current champion mare St.Pr.A. Royal Rose M. “I did not expected this success at the Herwart von der Decken-Show. I was literally moved to tears,” Klaus Michaelis remembers a very emotional moment in his career as a breeder. And there was another one: The couple The Hanoverian 10|2013 17 Breeding Sport Advertisement in the Ukraine Anatolii Bondar has built a facility on the breeding farm Brech in the Ukraine that has set out to become a renowned breeding- and a successful sport horse facility based on a Hanoverian foundation. By Dr. Ludwig Christmann T he little village Brech is located about three hours north of Kiev – closer to the borders to Russia and White Russia than to the Ukrainian capital. An important centre for the horse sport and the Hanoverian breed has developed on the breeding farm Brech over the past years. Anatolii Bondar is the owner of a large wallpaper factory and has fulfilled a dream by creating this breeding farm. The generously designed and newly built breeding facility accommodates about 30 Hanoverian broodmares of first-rate quality and with outstanding pedigrees as well as the offspring. The goal is to breed dressage and jumper horses of international quality. Dr. Christian Stampehl from Großburgwedel holds a great share in the realization of this demanding project. He is an experi- enced horseman who knows all aspects of the horse business as a breeder, a former successful competitor and as a judge. They visited the State Stud Celle when looking for suitable stallions. They have stallion performance test winner El Bundy by Escudo for the jumper-horse breeding program; he has already made a name for himself as producer in Hanover. They also added the 2005 born Ballybo by Balou du Rouet/Graf Sponeck (breeder: ZG Hagenah/Gustafsson, Oerel) after he finished his performance test. The choice fell on Ballettmeister by Brentano II/ Weltmeyer (breeder: Josef Brinkemöller, Georgsmarienhütte) for dressage. This stallion was born in 2003 and completed his performance test in 2006 with the highest dressage index of his age group at 146,42. His breeding is outstanding; his dam is a right sister to the sires Wolkentanz I and II. It is not all about breeding on the breeding farm Brech but also about the sport of riding. A generous indoor arena and perfectly designed outdoor rings offer best conditions for horse training and for hosting horse shows. There is a hotel with vacation homes and a restaurant for the guests to enjoy to make a stay as comfortable as possible. This year the facility on the breeding farm Brech was ready to host horse shows for the first time. The stallions also compete. “Ballybo is very well received,” Dr. Stampehl talks with satisfaction about the powerful and vigorous eight-year old grey stallion. The talented Andrey Rudoy became the Ukrainian Champion of young riders aboard him in Donezk. The pair remained faultless in all three classes that determined the champion. The classes included jumps of 1,45 meters. The pair also won the Grand Prix of Kiev and the final jumper class at the first show at the facility Brech. “These successes led to a high demand for offspring of Ballybo,” so Dr. Stampehl. The Escudo/Graf Grannus daughter called Etosha (breeder: Jürgen Meyer, Barsinghausen) is another successful jumper competitor. She was acquired on Verden’s summer auction in 2009. Nikolay Petrow won the bronze medal in the Ukrainian Championships for juniors in Donezk with this state’s premium aspirant. Ballettmeister also fulfilled all expectations. Irina Panchenko became Ukrainian Champion at Prix St. Georges on him in Tschasko. The pair placed third at Inter I and second at Inter I-freestyle. “Ballettmeister is very consistent in his performances. He competes at a difficulty level appropriate for his age. The next goal is to participate in a Grand Prix,” said Dr. Stampehl. Ballettmeister’s descendants are becoming more and more successful, too. His three-year old son Bobby out of a mare by Conteur has already won classes for young horses. Anatolii Bondar and Manfred Schäfer, as the President of the Hannoveraner Verband, signed an agreement that the breeding farm Brech is the official representative of the Hannoveraner Verband in the Ukraine. It is located within the city limits of Moscow. About 100 interested and – for the most part – knowledgeable horse enthusiasts visited the event and were convinced of the high level of quality of the Hanoverian breeding program in Russia. The program included a free-jumping competition, a riding horse class that was open to all sport horse breeds, a Hanoverian mare test (five mares) and for the first time a stallion inspection. Oleg Sheyko who built this first-class facility Elitar is one of the driving forces of the Hanoverian breed in Russia together with the president of the Hanoverian Club Russia called Dr. Marina Politova who reliably and skillfully maintains the contact with the central office in Germany. The stallion Quarenghi by Quintender/Escudo out of the breeding program of Oleg Sheyko was licensed. He is a typy jumper stallion with strong nerves who clearly won the freejumping competition and impressed under saddle with his rideability and his solid basic gaits. His second dam Winni by Wagner is a right sister to Celle’s former state stud sire Wanderer out of the breeding program of Board member Hartmut Wilking (left) and Dr. Ludwig Christmann at the prize distribution on Elitar. Heinrich Heemke, Kreepen. Another horse impressed with a convincing performance in the free-jumping chute: three-year old Quinessa by Verdi/Contendro out of the Elitar breeding program. This mare just seemed to play with the dimensions. She was awarded the premium aspirant status. Quinessa won the division for three-year old fillies together with a mare out of the old Russian Hanoverian population. The very typy mare Winzerin by the Arabic sire Vinograd ox and out of a dam by Acord II (breeder: Farm Elitar) won the riding horse class for three-year olds. Sempa Fideles is a very athletic mare by Stakkato Gold/Concetto (breeder: Holger Siems, Balge) and won in the four-year old class. Her owner Dmitri Litsov bought the mare on Verden’s foal auction in 2009. She not only impressed with her good basic gaits but also with her jumping talent that she exhibited in the free-jumping chute. Organizer Oleg Sheyko was very satisfied. “I was delighted to see that some of our very renowned riders and trainers attended our Hanoverian Day.” n France Pure passion Hanoverian horses have a huge fan club in horse-enthusiastic France. Hanoverian breeders in France have had an organized breed association, the “Association Francaise des Eleveurs et des Amis du Cheval Hanovrien” or short AFEACH since 2006. An annual registration tour is scheduled at the end of the breeding season once all foals have been born. The president of the AFEACH is Edouard Dewe. About 60 foals were registered and 20 mares inspected for the breeding book all over France. A mare performance test was organized followed by a show for the first time. This event took place at Haras de Hus in Petit Mars near Nantes. A total of four four-year olds took on the challenge that started with free jumping under the open sky. All four dressage mares did their best over fences. Selda by Soliman de Hus/Rotspon A Hanoverian mare show took place in France for the first time. (breeder: Kerstin Holthaus, Stoedtlen-Birkenzell; owner: Catherine Noel) presented herself in a splendid way. She also had a marvelous mare expression. She confirmed this good impression under saddle and also during the following show and advanced to become the champion mare. The chestnut mare Divine Star JM by Desperados/Rohdiamant (breeder: Barbara Ivemeyer, Bad Essen) finished in second place. She was also awarded an Ia-prize and the title elite mare candidate. Divine Star JM was of very athletic type. She jumped well and impressed on the triangle. Her owner Jessica Michel presented her beautifully under saddle. The additional two mares by Rascalino and by Lord de Hus were awarded an I. prize. The overall quality of the presented mares was very positive. Maren Schlender The Hanoverian 10|2013 19 Auction Sport Top priced foal: Freiherr v. Metall. and Daniel Delius auctioned off a total of 224 foals. Something else changed, too: As of this auction the Hannoveraner Verband has switched the settlement system from commission fees to agency fees. With that in place the customer was able to read in the catalog which rate of assessment applied and was added to the knockdown price of each foal: 0, 10,7 or 19 percent. Gerhard Wiechers is the head of the finance department and is very happy about this development, “The buyers took notice of this innovation. It created an additional purchasing incentive for many foals.” New format Shortened, moved and improved: These were the innovations at the 39th Elite Foal and Broodmare Auction in August. The results of these measures will however only reflect in the future. For one the date changed. The three-day event from previous years was shortened to two days. The date was moved up by one week and the number of participants was reduced by about 40 foals. Auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener summarized, “The decision was right. The clientele approached us directly. It was advantageous to move the sale closer to the World Championships for young dressage horses. Many international visitors stayed in Verden. The Hannoveraner Verband had organized a tour visiting breeding farms with an English-speaking guide. The auction result is remarkable: Foals sold to 22 different nations.” The foal presentation on Saturday and Sunday morning was moved to the World Championship-arena because of the close proximity to the World Championships. Auctioneers Bernd Hickert Never before 101 sires are responsible for the elitist descendants. The visitors had to stay almost to the end of the auction to see the top seller. Typy Freiherr out of the Hermann Rugen breeding program in Heeslingen with # 223 sold for 31,000 Euros. The sire of the moving artist is the Dutch stallion Metall who has among others sired the team Olympic champion Uthopia. He is represented with his descendants here in Verden for the first time. The young colt – out of a dam by Stedinger – impressed with his light-footed and always rhythmical and powerful movement whilst trotting around the Niedersachsenhalle. It came to no surprise that his appearance induced an exciting bidding duel. Horse experts from Germany and Denmark bid on Freiherr; in the end a buyer from the Rhineland held the final bid. In addition to the already described innovations and changes in the organization and in the management there were other things that had never been done before, too: Gerold Gögele from Bleckede has been a Hanoverian breeder for more than 10 years. The selection committee decided to include three of his De Niro-foals in the collection; a good choice. The fact that the entire German dressage team rode horses with D-blood at the European Championships in Herning the following weekend may have created an addition purchasing stimulus. These three foals obtained top prices: number one Darios (dam’s sire: Stedinger) sold for 26,000 Euros to Denmark. Denisa (dam’s sire: Hohenstein) sold for the same amount to Canada and Donna Doria (dam’s sire: Sandro Hit) sold for 29,000 Euros to clients from Indonesia. “I knew that the foals are very good but I did not count on such a success,” Gerold Goegele who is a successful S-level competitor in dressage and in jumping commented overjoyed. His recipe for success is athleticism. “All my mares are states premium mares and have I trained all of them. I know about their rideability – and that since four generations. Auction Sport This is very important to me.” Gerold Goegele has additional explanations for the desirability of his youngsters: excellent types, elastic movement and several closely related successful sport horses. Dark Boy by Don Index/Weltruhm (breeder: Aaron Schultze, Langlingen; exhibitor: Alwin Schultze, Langlingen) presented himself in similar fashion. Ernst Kemper bought the dapper black for 25,000 Euros. Ernst Kemper is a regular customer from North-Rhine Westphalia who appreciates Verden’s auction program. “I am always on the look for good colts as potential stallion aspirants or as top dressage prospects. As I do not have the time to travel from show to show during the summer the foal auction presents an excellent opportunity for me to find suitable candidates out of a group of already pre-selected colts.” He did not only buy one colt; Der Charmeur by Dancier/Londonderry (breeder: Dr. U. Grünn und H. J. Garbe, Westerstede; exhibitor: Dr. Ute Gruenn, Westerstede) also found a new home at the dressage stables Kemper in Borken. Cherie l’eau by Mylord Carthago/ Baloubet du Rouet (breeder: Sina Dierking, Gilten) was the most expensive youngster with jumping talent. The typy bay sold to the Ukraine for 16,000 Euros. The quality of colts was high. I am looking forward to seeing many of them at the stallion approval,” breeding manager Dr. Werner Schade stated. The average price for the foals of 2013 was 6,572 Euros – higher than last year’s average price. Eightysix of 221 auction participants found a new home in a foreign country. Denmark led the way with a total of 12 purchases followed by the United States and Sweden with eight foals each. Six foals sold to Great Britain. All six are going to the same breeding farm to start their career; they´re going to Gamblethorpe Farm owned by Denise and John Mitchell. The couple came to Verden in 1997 for the first time. They then lost their hearts to Hanoverian horses. More than 60 foals from Verden have been on or are still growing up on the property located near Leeds. Many of them have developed into very successful show horses. This time the couple picked Leopold (breeder: Hartmut Kettelhodt, Kirchlinteln), Celina (breeder: Konrad Jirjahn, Kuesten), Domino (breeder: Jürgen and Christian Droste, Bramsche; exhibitor: Jürgen Droste, Bramsche) Dacapo (breeder: Christina Vinnen, Ottersberg), Fortland (breeder: Focko Rademachern, Detern) and Fideelius (breeder: Dieter Erdmann, Wulsbuettel-Hoope). Solaika by Soliman de Hus/Wesley (breeder: Detlef Ruddat, Kirchlinteln) sold for 62,000 Euros to a female customer from Italy. Never before in the history of Hannover’s auction program has a broodmare obtained a bid in this amount. Solaika was the champion mare at the show in Lilienthal. The beautiful black mare impressed at the Herwart von der Decken-Show in 2012. She completed her mare performance test with above average scores; she received a 9,0 for her rideability. All these are top attributes that may have made the decision to purchase Solaika easier! The Hanoverian mares sold for an average price of 12,524 Euros; six of them found new homes abroad. Sephora by Sir Donnerhall/ Rohdiamant (breeder: Wilhelm Schwierking, Barver) was the second most expensive mare. The two-year old sold for EUR 18,000.00 to Terri Kane at Diamante Farms Dressage in Florida/USA. Four foals will accompany the two-year old: Queeny (breeder: Hanke Eits, Nordholz; exhibitor: Christoph Eits, Nordholz), Bandito (breeder: Dr. Carsten Haack, Freiburg), Spoerky de Luxe (breeder: Walter Rauen, Spelle) and Flagstaff (breeder: Claudia Habbena, Bunde). Auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener summarized, “We took several measures to increase the attractiveness of the auction. It takes a little time for these changes to reach our customers. Many exhibitors sold their products well and we still shall expand our potential to reach even better results for the other breeders.” n Statistics Foals Offer Sold Net returns Average price Top price Lowest price Euro Euro Euro Euro 224foals 221foals 1.452.400,00 6.571,94 31.000,00 3.000,00 Price range Euro 3.000 to 3.999 Euro 4.000 to 4.999 Euro 5.000 to 7.999 Euro 8.000 to 9.999 Euro 10.000 and more 44 62 70 15 40 foals foals foals foals foals Sales by regions Lower Saxony 95 Ba.-Wü. 6 Bavaria 3Brandenburg 1 Bremen 1Hamburg 2 Hessen 2NRW 18 Rheinland-Pfalz 3Sachsen-Anhalt 1 Schleswig-Holstein2Thüringen 1 Total135 foals Argentinia Belgium Finland Great Britain Italy Luxembourg Polen Sweden Czech Republik Ukrain 5Australia 4 Denmark 1 France 6 Indonesia 1Canada 1 Maroc 1 Portugal 8 Spain 3 USA 4 Austria 3 12 1 4 1 1 3 5 8 3 Total86 foals St.Pr.A.
