taly celebrated Memorial Day on

January 27, the date of the liberation of
Auschwitz in 1945 by the Russian army, with
an extremely rich calendar of events that
included the participation of the highest
government officials.
President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio
Ciampi spoke at the Vittoriano in Rome, where
he strongly condemned the contribution of
Italian racial decrees to the Shoah, “which
betrayed the highest ideals of the risorgimento
and of the nation”. He then recalled those
Italians who did not accept the racial laws and
those who were detained for refusing to
cooperate with the Nazis. Prime Minister Silvio
Berlusconi took part in the solemn ceremonies
at Auschwitz, where he spoke of the liberation
of the camp as “a day that put an end to the
ignominious extermination and unprecedented
moral and physical suffering of Jewish men,
women and children from all over Europe. The
cries of many Italians, including those snatched
from the ghetto in Rome in October 1943, also
resound from these walls,” affirmed Berlusconi.
In a press conference Foreign Minister
Gianfranco Fini affirmed that “Italy has a

Memorial Day in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv
The Embassy of Italy organized a remembrance of
Holocaust Day at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem on January
27 at which around 200 people participated, including
all employees and spouses of the Embassy, a large
contingent of Israelis of Italian origin as well as
representatives from the department of interreligious
and Jewish affairs of the MFA and from Yad Vashem.
Ambassador De Bernardin fostered the “flame of
remembrance” and laid a wreath in homage to the
victims of Nazi deportations. In brief remarks at the end
of the ceremony the Ambassador (photo) underlined the commitment undertaken by Italian
institutions to enrich knowledge of the horrors of the past and their determination to stamp out
any resurgence of anti-Semitism.
In the evening the Embassy presented the film “Memoria” to a crowded Tel Aviv audience at
the presence of the director Ruggero Gabbai. The film, which records the testimonies of Italian
Holocaust survivors, was closely followed by the public, which then participated in a lively and
emotional discussion, led by Dr. Simonetta Della Seta, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute,
who also interviewed Mrs. Hana Weiss, one of the film's protagonists now resident in Israel.
moral duty to remember the deep significance
of the Holocaust. We must continue our
commitment because, and I say this with pain,
there are still people in Italy, albeit a small
group, who, out of ignorance or bad faith, tend
to minimize or even deny the importance of
the racial laws and the role they played in the
persecution of the Jews.”
President of the Chamber of Deputies, Pier
Ferdinando Casini, declared that “all of us
have a responsibility which, with the passing
of time, becomes ever more urgent: to look for
new ways of relating what really happened so
that those who follow us will be securely
oriented.” At the special session of the UN on
January 24, President of the Senate Marcello
Pera contended that “the Holocaust did not
appear from nowhere; culture paved the way
by its acceptance of perverse ideas. Politics
provided the legitimacy, the Nazi regime did
the rest.”
Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation
(cont. from p. 1)
During the course of the mission the Italian
parliamentarians held meetings with Vice
Premier Shimon Peres, Knesset Speaker
Reuven Rivlin, representatives from the
Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defence
Committee led by Prof. Yuval Steinitz (who
hosted a working lunch for the group), and
members of the Israel-Italy Parliamentary
Friendship Association led by MK Moshe
Kahlon. In all its meetings the Italian delegation
heard expressions of appreciation for the
extraordinary depth of political understanding
between Italy and Israel, and for the valuable
contributions made by Italy, as outlined by Mr.
Peres in particular, in developing projects that
encourage engagement between Israelis and
Palestinians. The delegation, after visiting Yad
Vashem where President Selva laid a wreath in
memory of victims of Nazi persecution, attended
a parliamentary debate, where members were
warmly welcomed by Speaker Rivlin on behalf
of the Knesset. The delegation continued its
visit with a tour of the Jerusalem International
Book Fair, where they met numerous
participating Italian writers and editors, and then
visited the Italian synagogue and adjacent Nahon
Museum of Italian Jewish Art in Jerusalem.
President Selva also visited the headquarters of
the World Association of Libyan Jews which,
as illustrated by its museum as well as by its
active promotion of the Italian language,
maintains close cultural ties with Italy.<>

Welcoming Hon. Delfino, Minister Katz recalled
his meeting with Minister Alemanno in
December 2003 which resulted in the initialing
of a Joint Declaration for Cooperation. Katz also
expressed his warm appreciation for the
friendship repeatedly and concretely
demonstrated towards Israel by the Italian
Government. The Undersecretary, for his part,
explained how bilateral collaboration in
agriculture conforms with the general
understanding between the two governments,
and illustrated the reasons behind the
Denomination of Protected Origin strategies, to
which the Italian government attaches great
importance. Hon. Delfino also outlined the plan,
supported by Minister Katz, to constitute an
organization of Mediterranean olive oil
producers. Hon. Delfino then summarized the
flourishing collaboration between scientific
institutions of the two countries and outlined
new opportunities for cooperation.
The Undersecretary's visit to the Volcani Center
included meetings with Chief Scientist Prof.
Dan Levanon and other leading figures, as well
as with representatives from Israel's major wine
producers. The wine industry in Israel has
increased the quality of its products in recent
years, also due to the presence of entrepreneurs
of Italian origin, such as the Castel company,
established by Eli Ben-Zaken and considered
one of the best in the country. Hon. Delfino also
visited the Carmel wineries.
The Undersecretary's visit concluded with a
meeting at the Italian Business Desk and a
working lunch with Prof. Ariel Toaff and
members of the Israeli branch of the Accademia
Italiana della Cucina. The lunch took place at
the “Il Pastaio” restaurant in Tel Aviv, whose
owner Mrs. Vittoria Ashkenazi Sarano
participated last December in Rome at the first
conference of Italian restaurants in the world,
under the patronage of Minister for the Italians
abroad Hon. Mirko Tremaglia.<>

The theme at this year's biennial Fair was
dialogue between cultures and the creation of
bridges between different identities. The Italian
contribution included the Hebrew translation of
Verso Gerusalemme by Cardinal Carlo Maria
Martini; a debate on the “Italian literary border
experience” with the writers Josef Zoderer (Alto
Adige) and Paolo Rumiz (Trieste); and a visit
by the intellectual of Algerian origin Khaled
Fouad Allam, whose book Lettera ad un

the same vein the Italian Cultural Institute
celebrated the publication of the original text of
Pinocchio with a show for kids by the Teatro
Arcobaleno, which featured Jewish, Muslim and
Christian children from the Galilee.
The highlight of the Italian contribution to this
year's fair was the conference dedicated to “The
Literary Embrace between Italy and Israel.” At
the literary cafe, crammed with people including
Ambassador Sandro De Bernardin, the Consul
General in Jerusalem Nicola Manduzio and the
President of Venice's Consiglio Comunale Mara
Rumiz, the Director of the Italian Cultural
Institute, Simonetta Della Seta, brought together
some of the major exponents of the literary
exchange between the two countries, a real
“embrace” that results in dozens of books and
authors translated every year into the two
languages. Examining this unique phenomenon
in the publishing world were writers David

The book, in which the Cardinal
describes his strong bond with the
Holy City and his personal journey in
reaching it, physically as well as
spiritually, was discussed in the
presence of Mons. Pietro Sambi,
Apostolic Nuncio and Delegate,
Sandro De Bernardin, Ambassador of
Italy in Israel, and Rev. Fr. Pierbattista

Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with
the Union of the Italian Jewish Communities
and the Anti-Defamation League. A packed hall
warmly applauded the two conductors, Maestri
Maurizio Billi e Menashe Lev-Ran, who
alternated on the podium to conduct a
combination of classical pieces from
Nabucco and Aida by Giuseppe Verdi
as well as popular songs that included
a tribute to Duke Ellington and John
Lennon’s Imagine. The performance
of the soloist, Mrs. Cheryl Porter,
was particularly appreciated.
The following day, exactly 60 years
to the day after his death, Palatucci
was commemorated in an emotional
ceremony at Yad Vashem. After Police chief De
Gennaro and holocaust survivor Elisabeth
Kevit–Ferber fostered the eternal flame in
memory of 6 million Jewish victims of Nazism,
Interior Minister Pisanu laid a wreath of flowers
by Palatucci's name on the wall of the righteous
and Commissioner De Gennaro was presented
with a medal on his behalf.
Minister Pisanu described Giovanni Palatucci
6
as a man of profound Christian faith
“who not only saved the Jews in a
conscious act of heroism but remained
a figure of deep humanity faithful to
man's highest calling”. Professor
Shevach Weiss, himself a holocaust
survivor, an ex Speaker of the Knesset
and today head of Yad Vashem's
honorary committee, remembered
how Italy welcomed and helped
refugees from the death camps after the war.
Prof. Luzzatto recalled that Palatucci refused
refuge in Switzerland after it was granted to
him “to stay faithful to his responsibility as an
Italian.” Lawyer Alessandro Ruben, President
of ADL in Italy, thanked the Government of
Italy for its continuing fight against antiSemitism and racism. <>

Deserts and Storms
April 9 – May 15,
Givatayim Theatre
(40, Remez str.,Givatayim)
Exhibition of paintings
by Marta Salto-Weis Azevedo
(Franchetti Pardo),
in collaboration with the
Cervantes Institute Tel. 03-5279992
Deserts and storms are not only
physical entities, but also the
expression of states of mind
related to meditation and
creativity. Since my earliest youth
I have been fascinated by storms,
and have stood long hours in the
night to follow the creative
energy of elements such as wind,
rain, thunders and lightings. I could feel my
sensations flowing together with the roaring
storms.
The deserts were a later discovery, which
significantly enough, coincided with a period of
basic choices in my life. I have traveled to a few
of them: from the Sinai to the Yemeni Hadramouth,
and from the magic Siwa to the Western Desert,
bordering Libya. All of them
are different in the emptiness
of their vast spaces, but equally
rich in vital energy.
Here in Israel I could sense the
closeness between deserts and
storms. Luckily enough, my
house faces the sea of Tel Aviv,
and I spent many days and
nights watching the rough
waves and Jaffo appearing and
disappearing through the
clouds. I have also discovered
the Dead Sea valley, so close
to the living sea. Both are faces
of the same coin,
complementary one to the
other.
This is why I can work on two
subjects at the same time- storms and deserts that might, at first, appear so different. I have
tried to work out these complementarities as a
sort of synthesis of my deepest feelings: powerful
energy and internal equilibrium, anxiety and
optimism, primordial fears and peaceful sense of
infinity.
