In 1939 the Boosters held a fundraiser to generate money by holding a Boxing and Professional Wrestling event.
There was a “Rifle Club” at the high school and the first State FFA convention was held in Des Moines. It was
previously held in Ames. Kenneth Randolph and Arno Schaff participated in the FFA State Band. The Observer
hosted a “Cooking School” at the HS. We began Jr. High Track for the first time as well as having tennis courts
at the HS for the first time. Ralph Waldo Emerson lectured in the city of DeWitt and the Baseball HOF opened
at Cooperstown. The football team experiences it’s worst all-time loss when Anamosa beats us 77-0.
Kerrie Stream was one of the most dominant softball players in the early 1990’s. She was an First Team All-Big Bend

Brandy (Scheckel) Simmons
Inducted for Outstanding Individual Achievement
Brandy (Scheckel) Simmons was a 1992 Central High School graduate. An outstanding athlete, Brandy Scheckel
also graduated as one of the Valedictorians of her class. Brandy excelled in Basketball as well as Track. She also
competed in Volleyball and Softball. She received many awards including Big Bend Girls Basketball player of the
year in 1991-92. She was an all-state Volleyball player, and two times State Champion in the 400m Hurdles. She
helped the Central Sabers Girls Track team to the 2A State Championship in 1990. Brandy won her first State
Championship in the 400m hurdles in 1990 as a Sophomore. During the summer that same year, she suffered a
knee injury. She returned to running, but not hurdling in the spring of 2001, qualifying for State in the 4x400m
relay. At full recovery from her knee injury, Brandy captured her second Championship in the 400m hurdles as a
Senior in 1992. Following graduation, Brandy Scheckel played basketball at St. Ambrose University and was
named a NAIA Kodak All-American.
SABER PAWPRINTS
We played some really good baseball and softball this summer. If you did not get a chance to come over and watch a game you
missed some good entertainment. Both Varsity teams played pretty well throughout the summer and we had some nice home
stands winning a record number 32 games in baseball. Actually, we had some pretty nice weather to go along with the games and
our big crowds had quite a bit to cheer about. There is something very relaxing about taking in a summer baseball or softball
game. When you combine our “national pastime” with a hotdog or brat… or my favorite at the ballpark… the malt cup… it really
does not get much more American than that. Our fields are very picturesque and with the shadows being cast over the diamond as
the sun is setting to the west on a cool summer evening and the National Anthem is being played while looking at the flag flying
high over a backdrop of corn fields… well you know what I am thinking… “Is this heaven?”
I have played a lot of sports and whatever sport I was in at the time was always my favorite. Looking back I was probably most
passionate about wrestling, found my biggest success in football but it was baseball that I was likely most skilled in. I was a
catcher most of my career and enjoyed the sweat, grime and constant action while crouching behind the plate. Baseball is played at
a little different pace and intensity as some other sports but all the nuances of the game makes it very intriguing. I really enjoy
being at the ballpark in the summer. This summer was no exception. I enjoyed getting to the ballpark a little early and watching
our coaches and players get the field and themselves ready to play the game. I always think you can learn a great deal about a team
by watching them take infield. Attention to detail, pace, focus and execution or lack there of are typically very apparent during that
time. The smells of the ballpark are always enticing and it is fun to watch our patrons stroll into the ballpark. I had some great
conversations with those attending our games this summer. The Irwin family let us use their golf cart to transport patrons to the
park, and I got to have quite a few great talks with some fans who have been to quite a few games over the years.
It is enjoyable to talk to parents who are attending the games but they are sometimes so engaged in their athlete’s participation that
they are not quite as relaxed as the grandparents. Grandparents have most often already experienced all of the daily highs and lows
of raising teenagers. They have seen the long-term positive impact of young people being involved in extra-curricular activities so
don’t get as wrapped up into “wins”, “losses”, playing time, etc., etc. They take a more simple approach when attending events.
They are there to enjoy watching the game and take great pride in their grandchildren who have committed themselves to
something worthwhile. These are great times in a young persons life to be enjoyed and celebrated. I sometimes have to remind
parents not to forget one very important fact… enjoying each and every moment! Because as I now know first hand from our own
kids… when it is done, it is done for good. You will never get these special times back. Grandparents tend to take that perspective
and are more celebratory. I have an article that I have shared with our coaching staff that talks about the parents and athletics. In
the article the author sites this grandparent connection. He writes:
“College athletes were asked what their parents said that made them feel great, that amplified their joy during and after a
ballgame. Their overwhelming response: "I love to watch you play." Research shows young athletes especially enjoy having their
grandparents watch them perform. "Overall, grandparents are more content than parents to simply enjoy watching the child
participate," he says. "Kids recognize that." A grandparent is more likely to offer a smile and a hug, say "I love watching you
play," and leave it at that.
Now looking back at my own participation, it is the experiences I had with teammates that I remember as being special and don’t
really recall most wins or losses. As a parent, I now hold sacred all of those great moments watching our kids participate or simply
talking about practice at dinner. Many of the tense feelings, frustrations, concerns, etc. that go along with raising young people
trying to find their way through life have faded. The good memories… the good stuff… that is what remains. I challenge all of
our young people to go out and make some great memories for your parents, grandparents and most importantly… for yourself!

We have a new athletic website: “GAME ON”. There will be links to schedules, stats, photos, articles, forms, etc. as well as opportunities for
each program to develop a link for rosters, articles etc. There will also be the potential for video streaming of events, purchase of pictures,
twitter feeds, etc. We hope to slowly develop this site as the year goes on. Visit the website at: http://centralclinton-sabers.com/

We had a great summer of Youth Baseball and Softball. Our 12U Boys place 8th in the Gold division and our 11U team won the Silver
division. One of our graduates, Megan Salyars was recently highlighted in the QC Times and on her way to Wales to represent the
USA in Rugby. Good luck Megan. She is one of a number of former Sabers playing Collegiate or Club Rugby right now.
Make sure to welcome Mr. Cornelius to our high school!
Mr. Dean was busy up at the school this summer helping wit the production of “Snow White and the 7
Dwarfs”. This was a children’s theatre production put on by a traveling production out of Missoula Montana.
We had many community youth involved in the production and know it was an outstanding performance!
Jenny and I visited the Showboat this summer in Clinton and watch the musical production of “The Sound of
Music”. I was very impressed to watch two of our own in the cast: Samantha Strodman and Kayla Zeimet. It
was a great show! Kami Zeimet & Hailey Hughes were also listed in the program as being performers in
other Showboat productions this summer. Great job of getting involved in summer theatre everyone!!!
The Colts were back in town and as I have observed over the years, this is a pretty intense program and a hard
working group. They pay close attention to detail in every aspect of their performance. They put on a nice
show on Birney Field after a week of practice before moving onto the next event.
Our Marching Band were involved in a couple of parades this summer in Grand Mound and DeWitt.
Think about getting involved in our Art Club! It meets every Thursday in the
Art Room (RM. 404) from 3:00-5:30 pm..
