RULES
****READ CAREFULLY AS RULES HAVE CHANGED FOR THIS YEAR****
1. Participation in this competition implies acceptance of the Rules of the competition.
2. Applicants must be students registered in the Conservatory, Preparatory or Continuing Education Division of the
Cleveland Institute of Music during the 2014-2015 Academic year. Conservatory applicants may not be enrolled in
the Composer-Performer Virtuoso Double Major (BM/MM/AD).
3. Applicants may only submit one work for each annual competition. Compositions may be for any instrument or
combination of instruments.
4. Applicants must compose and substantively perform the work submitted, and are fully responsible for procuring any
performers required for performance. Compositions may be written for up to 14 performers.
5. Fellow performers may not be CIM faculty or professional instructors.
6. The Application Deadline is Monday, December 8th, 2014. On or before that deadline, each applicant must
submit ALL of the following items:
a.
YouTube Upload: A video (with audio) recording of the complete and unedited composition/performance
(web-link must be provided on your application – see below). Take care to capture the video and audio
without background noise and in proper lighting and perspective. Be sure the video is tagged and titled
with the name of the composer, the title of the piece and reference to the 2015 C.E. BALDASSARRE
Composer/Performer Competition for CIM.
b. Scores: All applicants must submit complete scores (with individual parts) to their respective Dean’s
Office. The applicant’s name and the title of the piece must be on the score to be eligible. All conservatory
applicants must have computer printed scores (e.g. Finale, Sibelius, etc.). Prep applicants may submit
NEATLY handwritten scores, but computer printed scored are always preferred.
c. Application (Google Document): The on-line application found here: www.cim.edu/cebcompetition
In addition to the on-line application, a physical copy of your Application Document must also be
presented to your respective Dean’s office on or before the deadline. The application has two parts – i) the
applicant’s information and ii) a brief essay.
i. The applicant’s information includes: name of composer; category (Jr. Prep, Sr. Prep,
Conservatory – based on age of applicant as of February 7, 2015); mailing address; E-mail
address; cell phone (preferred); date of birth; title of composition; YouTube link information;
applicant’s instrument; instrumentation of the piece; name and instruments of all supporting
performers; and name of primary teacher at The Cleveland Institute of Music.
ii. Brief Essay includes a well-written document (maximum 1 page) discussing the piece
especially in light of the Core Values and Z-Factor (see attached information).
7. Applicants will be judged on the strength of their composition, performance and the demonstration of “purpose” in
their work and performance (See Z-Factor and appendices).
8. A jury will determine and the Applicants will be notified on or before Friday, December 19, 2014 which works
are to be put forward for a public competition recital on Saturday, February 7, 2015; winners will be announced
upon completion of the public competition recital.
9. Prep winners of a Gold-level prize for two consecutive years will automatically be placed in the next highest
category for their third year (e.g. Jr. Prep to Sr. Prep, Sr. Prep to Conservatory) irrespective of their age.
10.
Compositions may not exceed 10 minutes in duration. Conservatory student compositions must be a minimum of
4 minutes. Prep compositions can be of any duration (10 minutes or less). At the recital, the jury reserves the right
to limit performance length of any piece.
11.
All compositions must be: an original work composed exclusively by the applicant, composed for this competition
and previously unpublished and unperformed in public prior to the competition recital. Arrangements of existing
works are ineligible, though works may be inspired by other compositions.
12.
Submission materials will not be returned (applicants should keep their original copies).
13.
Prize money will be presented by check at the Preparatory and Conservatory Commencements, respectively.
14.

recognize submissions for non-prize “Honorable Mention” status in its sole discretion. Jury decisions are final and
uncontestable.
15.
All first prize winners must include the following inscription on any recordings and programs in which the
