1. Katikies, Santorini, Greece
Far, far away from the crowded beaches and
thumping nightlife lies Katikies on the scenic
island of Santorini. Shaded terraces and
tranquil infinity pools provide astounding
views of the surrounding Aegean Sea and make
the very most of the legendary Mediterranean
sun. The 27 whitewashed suites and rooms
emerge from the Oia cliffs, each one its own
little romantic retreat, tended to by a stream
of discreet staff. www.katikies.com

3. Bon Ton Resort,
Langkawi, Malaysia
2. The Omnia, Zermatt,
Switzerland
Perched on a rock overlooking the glamorous bustle of
Zermatt, The Omnia is accessed via a cave that Batman would be
exceptionally proud of. Guests are then hurtled through the
mountain face by lift before coming to rest in the lodge-like
lobby, complete with roaring fireplace. If such an entrance
isn’t dramatic enough, then the views from the outdoor sauna
are sure to please, particularly in winter when the snowcapped peaks and rolling pistes glisten temptingly.
www.the-omnia.com
Reassuringly close to the beaches of Pantai
Cenang yet a world away from backpacker hell,
Bon Ton Resort is one of Malaysia’s best-kept
secrets. Set within 100-year-old grounds, eight
traditional kampongs have been lovingly restored
by owner Narelle, a native Aussie who has injected
oodles of style into every corner of the resort.
Adding to the allure of the boutique retreat, the
kitchens serve up some of Langkawi’s finest fayre
while the little shop stocks curios that you will
actually want to keep. www.bontonresort.com
4. Shakti 360 Leti, India
2,500 meters above sea level, in
the mountains of Kumaon in
Northern India, Shakti 360° Leti is
the stuff of dreams. Surrounded
by the overawing stillness of
the Great Himalaya mountain
range, just four pavilions make
up the hideaway, which can
either be accessed on foot or by
helicopter. Open-air bedrooms,
fire-pits from which to admire
the starry skies and almost
total solitude make it a feel
like it is in a whole other
galaxy let alone a million
miles from the rest of the
world.
5. Wildflower Hall, India
As lovely as its name suggests, Wildflower Hall
is hidden deep in the forests of the Himalayas. An
85-room fairy tale that once belonged to a British
aristocrat, the estate still bears traces of its previous
owner with a sturdy, wood-paneled library, smoking
room and chandelier-lit indoor swimming pool.
Come winter, the hotel makes the most idyllic haven
into which to retreat from the elements, while in the
summer the surrounding woodland comes alive.

6. Aman Sveti Stefan,
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Clinging on to the mainland by a thread, the islet of Sveti
Stefan has been extensively renovated to become one of
Aman’s heavenly five-star offerings. Rich in history and
culture, the island and nearby Dubrovnik are largely
unspoilt and offer an alternative, much more tranquil
Mediterranean experience. With its three pink beaches and
58 residences looking out onto the Adriatic Sea, Aman Sveti
Stefan offers both a spectacular view and stay. 7. Four Seasons Hotel
Hampshire, UK
When Londoners take a holiday, they prefer not to
travel too far. The glorious county of Hampshire,
just 45 minutes away from the capital, is comfortingly
close yet with its rolling green hills and bleating
sheep offers a real break from city life. With its own
working farm, lake and acres of fields, Four Seasons
Hotel Hampshire presents countryside living but with
five-star service, exceptionally comfortable beds and
perhaps most importantly, toasty heating – which in the
UK is usually necessary even at the height of Summer
9. Hotel Cala di
Volpe, Italy
8. Brown’s Hotel, London,UK
The original London
hotel, Brown’s Hotel
still enjoys one of the
capital’s finest reputations.
Set in scintillating
Mayfair, home to Bond
Street and its endless
delights, the grand
address epitomizes British
charm and also serves a
sumptuous afternoon tea
complete with scones and
clotted cream. As London’s
first ever hotel, it is also
riddled with history
though this is juxtaposed,
in true British style, with
some of the 21st century’s
most iconic artwork which
hangs on almost every
wall.
With the warm
Mediterranean Sea at its
feet and the numerous
distractions of Porto Cervo
around it, Hotel Cala di
Volpe offers an idyllic
seaside interpretation of
Italy. Designed to evoke
the quaint fishing villages
typical of Sardinia, the
hotel consists of 97 rooms and 17 suites
that oversee the glamorous Costa Smeralda, which has long been
a holiday destination of choice among the glitterati. From Sophia
Loren to Naomi Campbell, numerous have been the starlets who
have sunned themselves on its beaches and with good reason
10. Castel
Monastero,
Tuscany, Italy
A step back in history to a time
when monks roamed the region,
Castel Monastero occupies the
entirety of an 11th century
village in rural Tuscany. Behind
the rampart and between the
thick stonewalls of the former
monastery, 74 elegant rooms and
a private villa provide sanctuary
to weary guests who visit the
property for its charm, views
and extensive Wellness program. In the summer, the cunningly
constructed property remains blissfully cool while in early autumn
nature’s colorful feast is a spectacle not to be missed

11. Villa D’Este, Como,
Italy
A favourite among
wealthy Milanese
who take to the
lakes at weekends
come summertime,
Lake Como is the
jewel in the crown
of northern Italy.
On its shores, Villa
D’Este, with a
setting so beautiful
it is little wonder
that Hollywood’s
finest are often to
be found gathering
on the terrace.
Built in 1568, the
original villa now
houses a 152-room
hotel that has been
designed to honor
the establishment’s
heritage while the
original gardens
still remain,
enchanting as ever.
12. Hotel Caruso, Amalfi, Italy
Located in Ravello, one of the Amalfi Coast’s
most celebrated spots, Hotel Caruso is
housed within an 11th century castle, lovingly
restored to its original splendor with luscious
terraced gardens and original features adding
to the sense of old-world charm. Tumbling
ruins, sweeping views of the Mediterranean
and a dainty terrace from which to peoplewatch give the impression of having walked
onto the set of a Coppolla film.
13. Grand Hotel du
Cap Ferrat
Oligarchs and celebrities alike are to be
found lounging all summer long beside
the pool of the Grand Hotel du Cap Ferrat –
and with just reason. Set on the legendary
Côte d’Azure, so-named after its magnificent
waters, the hotel is the very definition of
splendor. A majestic driveway, manicured
grounds and a cliff-edge pool surround
the early-20th century palace resulting in a
hotel that is fit for a Princess.
128
14. Hotel Martinez
Cannes, famed for its film festival, year-round sunshine and joie de
vivre provides the setting for the chic Hôtel Martinez. A ubiquitous
silhouette set against the azure horizon of the Mediterranean
Sea, the hotel is an institution in its own right having welcomed a
string of Hollywood’s finest through its glistening doors. Grand
architecture, a private beach club and an enviable location right
on La Croisette result in its superstar status so that, come June, the
lobby reads like the casting list of a Hollywood blockbuster.

15. Hotel Albergo, Beirut,
Lebanon
Tucked behind a wrought iron gate,
Hotel Albergo is a world away from the
more corporate hotels and chains of
Beirut. Filled with charm, artefacts and
character, the petite retreat is set in
one of the older parts of the city with
views sweeping from mountain to sea
enjoyed from its fragrant roof terrace,
surely one of the most romantic venues
in Lebanon. Colourful tapestries,
intricate carvings and a mish-mash of
objets make it feel like a home away
from home.
17. Maya, Tangalle, Sri Lanka
Owned by interior designer Nikki Fairchild, Maya in Tangalle,
offers a fresh take on Sri Lankan living. Shunning the more
traditional ethnic style, Nikki favours a pared-back aesthetic,
bringing the 100-year old property into the 21st century
courtesy of some extremely tasteful furniture. Surrounded by
swaying palm trees and fringed by emerald green paddy fields,
the house may only feature three guest rooms but its impact on all
the senses is mighty.
16. Chateau de Bagnols, France
Just over two hours from Paris,
Château de Bagnols is a romantic
castle in the thick of the Beaujolais
vineyards. Dating back eight
centuries, the property lies in
extensive grounds complete with
box hedges, winding walkways and an
outdoor swimming pool made all the
more remarkable by its unusual round
shape. Surrounded by the rolling hills
of eastern France, it is a haven of history and
charm that needs to be experienced at least
once in a lifetime.
19. La Colombe d’Or, France
18. Dina Robin,
Mauritius
In amongst the seemingly
endless roster of astoundingly
beautiful properties that
Mauritius has to offer is the
lesser-known Dina Robin
on the island’s West coast.
Sheltered by the mountain of
Le Morne, the elegant hotel
faces out onto one of the atoll’s
most spectacular and lifefilled lagoons teeming with
brightly coloured coral and fish
and fringed by a startlingly
white beach. Hemmingway’s
description of Mauritius
being ‘paradise on Earth’ was
absolutely spot on.
High up above Nice, in the hills of legendary Saint Paul de Vence, La Colombe D’Or
is an art appreciator’s paradise. Once a retreat for the likes of Miro, Braque and
Chagall, who would settle their bill by presenting the owners with a signed
sketch, the inn is now filled with priceless art. Neighbouring gallery the Maeght
Foundation adds to the allure of the hideaway, as does the warm hospitality of
the owners who continue to play host to the art world’s most exciting talents.
20. Villas de Trancoso, Brazil
Set along one of the most beautiful beaches
in Brazil, Villas de Trancoso certainly lives
up to its name – tranquillity reigns among
the thatched cottages, flanked by towering
palm trees and framed by the endless blue
skies of Bahia. Open air living spaces and
tented beds are testament to the enviable
climate experienced by the hotel year
round while an 18-hole golf course runs
the length of the property adding to the
impossibly green surroundings.

22. King Pacific
Lodge, Canada
When asked to describe
Canada, most visitors would
immediately mention its vast
lakes, spectacular scenery
and rugged natural features.
Accessible only by air, King
Pacific Lodge in the evocatively
named Great Bear Rainforest
offers guests all of that and
more. An imposing lakeside
property just shy of the
Alaskan border, the lodge is
a nature lover’s nirvana with
pods of orca, packs of wolves
and even the endangered Spirit
Bear frequently spotted in the
area. 21. Cape Kidnappers,
New Zealand
6,000 acres of rolling pastures
play home to Cape Kidnappers and
its 24 rustic suites and rooms on
the dramatic East coast of New
Zealand’s North Island. Designed
to emulate a working farm, the
property is a nature-lover’s paradise
with a string of activities including
trout fishing, white water rafting
and horse riding taking place on
and off site. For the more sedate,
gazing out across the vast plains
that dwarf the hotel is activity
enough, with views becoming even
more awesome come sunset.
23. Amangiri, Utah, USA
Surrounded by the stillness of the Utah desert,
Amangiri is a pale stone structure embedded in
the canyons and designed to blend in with the
dramatic landscape. Awe-inspiring surroundings
and blazing sunsets are best enjoyed from the
open-air Desert Lounge, which is a humbling
spot from which to enjoy a cup of
hot chocolate. Inside the 34-suite
refuge, thick cement walls and
an abundance of natural fabrics
keep the focus of the property on
the outside ensuring that guests
never miss a moment of the ongoing
outdoor spectacle.
24. Amangani, Jackson Hole, USA
The first Aman property in North America, Amangani is a
Wild West-inspired lodge set in the outback of the Grand
Teton National Park. Constructed from locally sourced stone
and timber, the resort has been designed to withstand
the coldest winters and the hottest summers ensuring its
popularity whatever the weather. Wildlife safaris, flyfishing, mountain climbing and golf keep guests active
over the warmer months while later in the year the domain
becomes one of the leading ski resorts in the US. 25. Hotel Daniel, Paris, France
Visitors to Hotel Daniel, located just off the Champs Elysees in Paris,
are immediately struck by the boutique hotel’s beautiful interior. Toile
de Jouy, chinoiserie and handpainted wallpaper panels decorate every
room while a tasteful mish-mash of furniture adds to the bohemian
atmosphere. Little patisseries and amuses-bouches are served at the
intimate Restaurant Daniel, which feels more like a private dining room
than a hotel restaurant and provide the perfect little pick-me-up for
exploring the city of romance.

26. Heritage Le Telfair, Mauritius
A whitewashed campement that has been designed in traditional creole
style, The Telfair offers a glimpse of Mauritius past. A sprawling woodpanelled library and wraparound verandas add to the sense of oldworldly charm but the residence is brought forward a few hundred years
by the five-star facilities on offer which include a seriously lush golf
course. Behind the hotel lie acres of sugar cane fields while in front is the
pristine Indian Ocean, complete with dolphins. Heaven.
27. The Goring,
London
Perhaps now
most famous
for having
hosted the
Duchess of
Cambridge,
formerly
Kate
Middleton,
on the
night before her
nuptials to Prince William, The
Goring is one of London’s most charming
hotels. Afternoon Tea is an institution and
dates back to 1910 - taken in the gilded Lounge
or, weather permitting, on the sunny terrace
it is the perfect pause in an action-packed day
spent visiting the British capital. Just a moment
away from Buckingham Palace, it is also the
perfect retreat from the bustle of the city.
29. Villa Jamal, Morocco
Situated within an olive grove, with views of the Atlas
Mountains, Villa Jamal is a splendid Moroccan experience. A
fusion of local and Oriental influences, the private house
lies just 20 minutes away from the center of Marrakech
and presents impeccably decorated rooms that open onto
beautifully tended grounds. Within the property guests can
enjoy an indoor swimming pool, hammam and succulent
cuisine provided by the resident chef whose creations use
organic produce sourced from local orchards.
