The fresh crisp air in the morning. The blossoms -- you can almost watch them bloom before your very eyes! Alas – for all the joy in each new spring, we realize in the big picture of life we are all dying. Yes, but life is a gift from God. We’d like to live it as long as God will allow. We do our best to preserve our lives: eat healthy, exercise, practice spiritual disciplines, keep our minds engaged, channel our emotions appropriately, and invest ourselves in our children and grandchildren and the youth around us so our legacy of character and worth will live on and on. Or do we? Interesting how much these elements of the human body parallel the body of Christ, His church – your church, my church. The Apostle Paul drew some strong comparisons (Romans 12 and I Corinthians 12). Like the human body, every church lives out a life cycle. Birthed, live some period of time, then die. Some live hundreds of years, others far, way less! In the normal course of life (that is, barring a tragic accident), people become unhealthy on the way to death. So, too, with churches. According to the North American Mission Board (NAMB), only 10-15% of Southern Baptist churches are healthy and multiplying. Another 7075% are not healthy and are plateaued or declining. The remaining 10-15% are at risk or near risk of death. We can expect that around 900 Southern Baptist churches will close their doors – that is: die -this year! WHERE IS YOUR CHURCH ON THE CYCLE OF LIFE FOR A CHRISTIAN CHURCH? There are many ways to define a healthy or an unhealthy or an at risk church. Let me share with you how I understand NAMB approaches this. **Church struggles to pay its bills in a timely manner. **Church does not pay its pastor in the manner in which the people know he should be paid. **Church is unable to attract young people and young families from its community. **Church is not engaged in its community. The community wouldn’t notice if the church closed. **IF current trends continue in both attendance and giving, the church may have to close within the foreseeable future. AN UNHEALTHY CHURCH ON ITS WAY TO AN EARLY DEATH **A steady decline in active attendance for more than three years. Joe Cappar Associational Missionary/ Director of Missions New River Baptist Association A church with any of these “symptoms” is less than healthy. Help is available. But, perhaps you say, “Phew, thank God we don’t look like that!” Ok. Maybe not at risk of immanent death, but does that mean healthy? What does A HEALTHY CHURCH look like? **People are constantly coming to Christ. **Healthy disciples are reproducing healthy disciples. **Members live out God’s Word in their daily lives. **Members serve and meet significant needs in the community. **Leaders find ways to start new churches. **Leaders find ways to send missionaries. Your church is healthy? Really? Yes? Praise God! No? Help is available. An Association is churches helping churches so every church can be healthy! Think about it. Pray about it. Let us help. Also -- plan to be with us for our Disciple-Making Church Revitalization Conference on May 12 (details are on page 3 in this issue). Pray today for the churches of the NRBA!
