Fall Woodcarving Rally 2015 Comanche Peak Tri-County Woodcarvers Nolan River Chippers November 7-8, 2015 Judged Show November 9-13, 2015 Classes Dear Woodcarving Friends, We would like to invite you to the Oakdale Park Fall Woodcarving Rally and Show in Glen Rose, Texas scheduled for November7 through November 13, 2015. Rich with history, the newly renovated Oakdale Park has been a recreational area since 1925. The event will open with the “Judged Show & Sale” featuring wood carvers, wood turners, and scroll saw artists. It will be open to the public and held at the Convention Center of Oakdale Park on Saturday November 7 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Sunday November 8 from Noon – 4 p.m. A “People’s Choice” and a “Carvers’ Choice” award will be given to the individuals that receive the most votes by the end of Sunday. This year’s show will be a Judged Show featuring many different categories. Ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be given for each category in Judged portion of show. There will also be three “Best of Show” for Open, Novice and Woodworking categories. From Monday, November 9 through Friday, November 13 classes will be offered on various kinds of woodcarving. The class times and descriptions are included in information packet. We have gathered a strong line-up of instructors that are well known in their respective specialties. Students will be charged a registration and instructor fee. Early registration is $25 and $35 after October 15. Half of the Instructor fees will be paid with the registration fee. The other half of instructor fee will be paid to the instructor the first day of class. Classes will fill up fast so sign up early! Visit our website: www.oakdalepark.com for more information. Tags inside your packet should be attached to your carving with your table number on one side and the category number on the other side. Please cover your name on the carving. Categories will be called when time to enter. Each Carver must have a table or sharing a table to enter the judging competition. No mail ins. Carver must be present. You may begin putting items in judging competition from 8:00am-9:30am, Saturday, November 7. Late entries will not be allowed. Judging begins at 10:00 am. You may enter two carvings in each of the categories. Any carving that has won a blue ribbon in any show may not be entered. All categories must have at least two items to be judged. Judge has the authority to move any carving that is out of right category or remove an item from judging category if of an offensive subject. We will allow class pieces and ruff out carving, since this is our first year to have a judged show. After the category is finished being judged you may pick up any carving that does not have a blue ribbon. Blue ribbon pieces will be judged for Best of Show. Segmented turned pieces using different woods – include carved turned pieces 33. Turned Pens – single or set of pens also including letter openers 34. Scroll Saw – items such as pictures, fretwork or items cut and assembled to provide a decorative piece 35. Turned/Scroll Miscellaneous – pieces that cannot be in above categories Judging Criteria Carvings are judged on a 7 criteria point system. A scale of 1-7 points on each criteria: 1 being the lowest and 7 being the highest. The highest possible score will be 49. Criteria Definitions: 1. Creativity: Using your own originality power to create from the beginning. Being artistic to enhance the carving 2. Originality: Creating something new. Using your own creativity. 3. Finish: The final touches used to finish the carving. (Use of stain, paint, polish or natural) A finish may enhance or destroy your carving. 4. Execution: Your performance, detail, clean cuts and completion. 5. Complexity: The intricate work you incorporate into the piece. Again, the amount of detail. 6. Realism: True to Life. Research used to create the actual fact of realism. (muscle, bone, feathering, color and other) 7. Presentation: The way you present your work to the public. The base used, effectiveness it portrays to audience and overall environment supporting your carving. These are the criteria points that will be used in judging the show. He will bring your choice of 2 caricatures: “Christmas Shelf Elf” and the popular “Old Geezer” WWII Vet. Tools Required: sharp hand tools, safety glove; pencil and measuring device, a light and cord are suggested. Painting will not be included in this class. Minimum # of students – 3 / Maximum # of students 8 Class #2A – Ron Davis 9” Pirate Peg Leg Skill Level – BI Cost - $30 Total Ron will teach a one day class on Monday on how to carve a 9” Pirate Peg Leg piece. No paint during this class. Tools Required: Normal sharp tools. Ron will furnish the band saw cut-out. Maximum # of students - 6 Class #2B – Ron Davis 11” Civil War Soldier Skill Level – I Cost - $30 Total Ron will teach a 2 day class on Wednesday and Thursday on how to carve an 11” Civil War Soldier. Tools Required: Normal sharp tools. Ron will furnish the ruff-out and practice sticks. Maximum # of students – 6 Class #3 – Carolyn Halbrook Chip Carving & Wood burning Skill Level – BIA Cost - $35/day plus $2-$45 per blank Carolyn will teach 5 one day classes, Monday thru Friday, on a variety of chip carving projects and wood burning. The beginners get a stamped board and go over all of the basics, including how to hold the knife and make the different cuts for the different types of chips. The students who are not beginners can have either a stamped board or a plain board. Students can choose from a variety of projects such as small crosses and ornaments to larger projects such as boxes, trays, large plates with design and lettering, etc. Carolyn tries to have something for everyone's taste and carving level. Tools Required: For chip carvers – a sharp chip carving knife For wood burners – a wood burner (light would be preferable) Light to see by Minimum # of students – 3 / Maximum # of students – 10 (per day) Class #5 – Don Hartt Fancy Walking Canes Skill Level – BIA Cost - $35/day plus $40-$80 per blanks Don will be teaching his Fancy Walking Cane class again and will do 5 one day classes. The students can schedule as many days as they want, from 1 to 5 days. However he strongly suggests you take at least 3 days. Out of all the classes he’s done so far, he has never had anyone complete the project in less than 3 days. Some of the patterns he installs on the blanks can be done in 3 days but there are a lot of patterns that cannot be completed in only 3 days. Time required for completion is dependent upon the pattern the student chooses. You can learn how to put on a fancy pattern and to carve and finish it. After the class you should be able to do your own fancy cane without help from anyone. If you do need help Don is just a phone call (832-2367691) or email ([email protected]) away. Tools Required: Carving knives, gouges and A-100 background tool which will be available for purchase from instructor for $10. Minimum # of students – 1 / Maximum # of students - 12 Class #6 – Mart Lind Human Bust of Choice Skill Level – BIA Cost - $40/day plus $25-$95 for rough outs Mart will teach a 4 day class, Monday thru Thursday, on human bust. Numerous rough outs both in basswood and butternut will be available. You can choose from Indians, cowboys, mountain men, and other Western characters. Most students will be able to complete their carving. Mart teaches all skill levels and works one on one with his students. Tools Required: A positioner or carving stand would be useful. Mart will make his tools available for students and will provide all wax stains and finishing materials. Minimum # of students – 8 / Maximum # of students – 10 Class #7 – Wanda Reichert Shallow Relief Skill Level – BIA Cost - $25/day plus $12-$15 per wood Wanda will teach five 1 day classes on shallow relief or intaglio. Shallow relief may be done with own or instructor’s pattern. Intaglio is reverse to relief, carving is done into wood. Tools Required: 1” #3 gouge, 3/16” #3 gouge, hand held tools, hook blade knife, skew, and wood burner with assorted tips. Wanda will provide paints and patterns. Minimum # of students – 2 / Maximum # of students – 12 Class #8 – Stuart Riley Bark Carving Skill Level – BI Cost - $25 Total Stu will teach a 1 day class on Friday on bark carving. Learn to carve either a house or face. Tools Required: Wood burner, dremel, & normal hand tools. Instructor will provide bark. Minimum # of students – 4 Class #9 – Harry Seurkamp Household Gadgets Skill Level – BIA Cost - $25/day Harry will teach a class, Monday thru Friday, on a Household gadget that include items such as an animal backscratcher, door stops, shoehorn, letter opener and more. Tools Required: mallet tools suggested, not required. Minimum # of students – 4 / Maximum # of students – 10 Power Carving Classes Class #10 – Bill Killian 10” Crappie Skill Level – BI Cost - $250 total Bill will teach this class on Monday through Friday which will instruct on how to carve a 10” crappie. If time permits, the students may paint. This is a power carving project and some wood burning will be necessary. Tools Required: Students must bring their own tools Minimum # of students – 5/Maximum # of students – 8 Class #11 – Cal Stewart Black Cap Chickadee Skill Level – BIA Cost - $175 Total Cal will teach a two day class Monday-Tuesday on how to carve a Black Cap Chickadee. Tools Required: Wood burner and tips, paint brushes, power carver, bits and burrs. A dust collection unit is required. Instructor will provide cut out, paint, eyes and feet. Minimum # of students – 4 / Maximum # of students – 6 Class #12 – David Borg Caricature Carving Skill Level – A Cost - $35/d plus $10-$20 for blanks David will teach 2-2 day classes and 1-1 day class to paint carving. Class days do not have to be continuous. Students may pick from 20 rough outs of hatching dragons or other critters. Projects of 1,2,3,4, and 5 days are available. Pieces will be carved using knives, gouges, and other hand tools. There are multiple methods for texturing your project, i.e. wood-burning, power or carving tools (not required). Bring your rotary tool and dust collector or wood-burner if you intend to use them for texturing. If you don’t have either, a few will be provided by the instructor. This class will allow you to learn new techniques that may be applied to other types of carvings. Tools required: Standard carving tools. Rotary tool, small carbide ball, dust collector, wood burner (optional for texturing).
