Healthy Teeth, Healthy Kids
Dear Colleagues,
I would like to bring your attention to the Maryland Oral Health Literacy Campaign: Healthy Teeth, Healthy Kids.
This important social marketing campaign was created by the Maryland Dental Action Coalition in strategic alliance
with the Maryland Office of Oral Health in order to convey to low-income pregnant women and families of very young
children the importance of routine dental visits and appropriate preventive practices at home.
It launched in March 2012 and is currently reaching out to these groups in providing valuable oral health information
through various means using direct mailing, online posting and traditional and social media. I urge all of you to become
involved in this campaign by continuing to spread its important message. You can do so by:

Letter FROM The Editor
“Pointed question has been raised about the evidence
supporting a number of popular supplementation strategies
in recent years, with calcium and vitamin D among the most
recent examples of supplements to draw scrutiny (Kevin
Lomangino, Clin. Nut. Ins. Vol. 38; 8; 2012).
Tris Kruger, DDS, MS, CNS
Four recent trials and a large Meta-analysis (Kwak, SM,
EDITOR
MD; Myung, SK; Lee, YJ; et al; For the Korean Meta-analysis
study grp efficacy of omega-3 fatty acid supplements (EPA, DHA) in the secondary
prevention of CVD: ARCH Intern MED. 2012: 172: 686-694), reported no
significant effect of Omega-3 fatty acid supplements for the secondary prevention
of cardiovascular disease (CVD). (K. Lomangino)
A variety of explanations, ranging from improved drug therapy (Beta-Blockers,
aspirin, statins and angiotensin – converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or Angiotensin
II receptor Blockers (ARBs)) of patients in newer trials, to an insufficient dosing
(~1g/d or less, versus 2-4g/d of supplement) and an increase in sample size in more
recent studies, are offered as explanations as to why older studies showed a small
benefit.
“When the results of our study (Origin Trials Investigators N-3 fatty acids
and CVD outcomes in patients with dysglycemia, N Engl J MED. 2012 June 11.
doi:10.1056/ NEJMOAC1Z03859) are added to the Meta-Analysis by KWAK, et al;
the risk estimate for death from CVD causes, changes MINIMALLY.”
Hu and Manson (Hu, FB; Manson, JE. O-3 FA and secondary prevention of
CVD: is it just a fish tale? ARCH Intern MED. 2012; 172: 686-694) said there is “No
conclusive evidence to recommend fish oil supplementation for 1° or 2° prevention
of CVD” but that “a diet high in fatty fish (> 2 servings of marine fish per week)
should continue to be recommended for the general population and for patients
with existing CVD.”
To conclude: Be wary of the benefits of supplementation. I continue to find
relevance in vitamin C supplementation – humans are a very unique group that
don’t have vitamin C as a carbohydrate metabolism off shoot, but I eat many
servings of fruit per day and MINIMALLY processed juice and raw vegetables,
along with a variety of beans, olives and nuts. I eat 0-3 FA by eating sardines and
kippered herring almost every night. Red meat is OK, as is other fish, as long as it
is not “processed.”
Enjoy the summer bounty of fresh foods and remember that exercise is far more
important than what you eat!
Very Best!

Dr. Kruger Responds
I am sorry to see the MSDA Newsletter spread such a poor image of our profession. As health care providers, we should be concerned not only about the health of our
patients, but of the population at large. Please note that the animal was not beckoned, but was not denied either, and
acquiescing his demands was inappropriate.
Very Best!
T F
Feeding wild animals is dangerous to both the health of the human population and
the animal population. The pictures of Dr. Kruger feeding a wild squirrel, may be
cute, but it is just plain wrong! A simple Google search on “feeding wild animals”
yields a multitude of very reputable organizations writing on the dangers and the
damage of feeding wild animals. Wild animals need to be kept wild.
Please correct this error.
Yours for the better health for all,
Harvey S. Cohen, DDS, MAGD F

Synchronicity is when simultaneously occurring, meaningfully related things
happen. Two and a half years ago, as I spent an evening taking a local extension course
on parliamentary procedure (I know I’m a big nerd), I received a call from my local
MSDA trustee, letting me let me know that there was an unexpected opportunity for
AGDS to name the next MSDA president. He asked if I would be willing to serve. I knew
the synchronicity of these two events was
significant. Through a bit of courage, faith and
sense of responsibility, I spoke to my husband
and kids and decided to accept the challenge
and become MSDA’s president.
I am so happy that I did! During the past two
years I have been honored, both as President
Elect and as President, to have worked with
such amazing MSDA Officers, Committee
Members and Staff. During this time, MSDA
has taken great strides in forwarding its basic
purpose – to be the most trusted resource
in the dental profession and be its leading
provider in advocacy, education, legislation
and member services. These are some of the most important
things we have accomplished together this
year:
Clearly the number
one issue we must
confront as an
organization is to
lead the charge of
creating what the
practice of dentistry
will look like in
the future.
1) Through the hard work of many, a Strategic
Plan was developed and – I am happy to report – is delivering enhanced awareness
of MSDA’s value, better operational effectiveness and increased proficiency in timely
response to the issues effecting dentistry in Maryland. The Bylaws and Policies were
reviewed by legal council and edited with great discernment so that the MSDA could
be more organized, nimble and quick to respond to the needs of our members and to
those across the state who look to the MSDA to be a leading advocate and legislative
policy maker.
2) The Charitable and Educational Foundation of the MSDA is up and running again,
aiding our members, granting dental student scholarships for future generations
and helping to create funding for our charitable projects. One of these projects, the
Mission of Mercy, has, since its inception 2 1/2 years ago, already delivered over
2.5 million dollars of dental services to the citizens of Maryland. This is validating
our intentions to legislators and other groups across the state that MSDA is truly
committed to the welfare of the citizens of Maryland.
3) Our legislative initiatives in Annapolis have been welcomed as forwarding access to
dental care while at the same time keeping the standard of delivery unsurpassed.
MSDA has become a leader in the creation of consensus among the various
stakeholders throughout the state. Through the relationships MSDA has developed,
we have expanded our ability to get important things done. MSDA truly is becoming
THE most trusted resource in the state.
So what lies ahead? Clearly the number one issue we must confront as an organization
is to lead the charge of creating what the practice of dentistry will look like in the

Basic Dental Implant Training
Have you ever wanted to learn how to place an
implant, but weren’t sure how to go about it?
MSDA has found a solution with the Basic Dental Implant Training
course. This course allows general dentists an opportunity to learn,
through hands on experience, how to place an implant. After 4 full days
of lecture and hands on training, a dentist has an opportunity to perform
a live surgery on one of their own patients, under the supervision of the
course instructors. There is no better way to learn and get the feel of placing
an implant.
What sets us apart?
We have a local facility to make our course more accessible for practitioners.
We provide comprehensive hands on exercises so practitioners will feel
comfortable with the instruments necessary to perform an implant procedure.
Our clinicians will form a treatment plan and perform a live surgery on one
of their own patients at our local facility with the support of our faculty.
During the course our staff will support you by having hands on sessions
in your office and preparing your staff to assist in the implant placement
procedure.

A Smorgasbord of Clinical
and Useful Pharmacology
PRESENTED BY HAROLD L. CROSSLEY, DDS, PHD
This seven (7) hour presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 24th at the Doubletree Hotel in Columbia, MD. The presentation will be divided into two programs. The
morning session provides the nuts and bolts of practical pharmacology useful in the dental
office. Using the most prescribed drugs as a template, the presentation explores the control
of postoperative pain, the drug of choice for oro-facial infections, the prophylaxis guidelines
for the cardiac and/or orthopedic prosthesis patient, current information on bisphosphonate induced osteonecrosis, as well as, potentially harmful drug interactions. The afternoon
session will provide a snapshot of legal and illegal drug abuse. This part of the program will
explore why some people become addicts and others do not, the more popular drugs of
abuse among adults and adolescents, signs and symptoms of their abuse and the impact of
substance abuse on your practice, your family and you.
This lively, entertaining and informative presentation lecture should be attended by all
dentists, spouses, dental hygienists and dental team members. The topics are of vital importance to your practice, your dental team, your family and society today. At the end of this
presentation the participant will be able to:
• identify the maximum doses for commonly prescribed pain medications
• list the contraindications for NSAIDs
• identify the drug of choice for all orofacial infections
• identify the antibiotics recommended for 2007 guidelines for SBE prophylaxis and
orthopedic prostheses
• recognize the signs and symptoms for the “doctor shopper”
• list common drugs of abuse within the adolescent population
• identify some oral manifestations of substance abuse

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
continued from page 3
future. I believe it is imperative that we keep dentists as leaders of the dental team
while expanding our efficiency, while keeping our costs in check. It is dentistry’s part
of taking responsibility for our piece of the healthcare pie. We also must teach our
patients self management capabilities so that dentistry’s burden on healthcare dollars
will stay in check.
We must engage our own community of dentists to join organized dentistry so that
together we can be a tour de force in explaining to those outside the profession, why
irreversible surgical procedures belong in the realm of the dentist only. At the same
time we cannot create the necessary efficiency and cost savings to patients without
enlisting the help of currently recognized dental auxiliaries and, as in the case of the
ADA supported EFDA (expanded function dental assistant), expand what reversible
procedures assistants and hygienists can do under the direct supervision of a dentist.
In a Spring 2012 issue of the Journal of the American College of Dentists, in an article
by Dr. Albert Guay and Vickie Lazar, they state, “In assessing future dental workforce
needs it is important to consider dental office productivity. The capacity of the oral
healthcare system to meet the demand for care should be measured by the number
of dentists available to provide care and their productivity and efficiency. It may be
less expensive and require less time to expand the capacity of the oral health care
system by increasing the productivity of dental practices rather than to educate more
dentists. That could be achieved by more effectively employing already existing cadres
of ancillary personnel and expanding their numbers.” We as the MSDA must keep our communication lines strong, our ethics in and
continue to foster consensus among those who look to us to lead.
When I first took office I made the following statement and leave you with this
thought: In your own sphere of influence, ask yourself..... Am I the most trusted
resource for my patients, am I advocating for them, educating and serving? Am I an
effective ambassador for dentistry in my community? It is in the power of us ALL
doing this on a daily basis that we will become stronger as individual professionals and
stronger as a professional organization AND be able to improve the health and well
being of the citizens of Maryland. F
