perfect your
décolletage
Stretch marks or dark
spots are common, even
among young women.
Don’t sweat ’em—
they’re natural—but for
big strapless-dress
moments, try a foundation spray, says Victoria’s
Secret makeup artist
Jackie Gomez, or use
what’s left on your foundation brush to even out
your skin tone on your
breasts or arms. A good
spritzable base: Sally
Hansen Natural Beauty
Airbrush Spray Makeup
($14, at drugstores).

Body oils don’t just look
sexy; they hydrate, too.
“Use them alone on dry
skin or mix some with
body cream,” says Antonina Dutu, aesthetician
at La Prairie Spa at the
Ritz Carlton in NYC.
“Neroli oil is great for
acne-prone skin.” For
dry skin, try Clarins Body
Treatment Oil Tonic
($50, clarins.com).
don’t forget
the basics
“My skin is the
one thing
I always have
on. When
it looks healthy,
I feel pretty.”
—our model,
kaone Kario
“You’ve heard this
before, but it’s worth
repeating: Water and
sleep are essential
to looking your best
every day,” says Dutu.
And neither one
will cost you a dime.

three rules

soften little
rough spots
Elbows and knuckles
are people too! To
pamper these and other
neglected zones, “use
a microdermabrasion
cream or exfoliator
twice a week,” says
Dutu. Opposite page:

1. Protect and prevent. The
number-one must-do:
Wear sunscreen! “So many
people do aggressive things
like peels, resurfacing and
lasers,” says Boston-based
dermatologist Ranella
Hirsch, M.D. “But if you’re
not wearing sunscreen,
you’re not doing much.”
Rub a broad-spectrum
SPF 30 sunscreen or moisturizer onto your face daily
to fight sun damage (see
the great new picks on page
154). Look for one with
antioxidants like green tea,
coffeeberry or vitamin A
or C; try Origins A Perfect
World SPF 35 UV Face
Protector ($28, origins
.com). “You know how at
Jamba Juice they ask you if
you want an extra boost?
Well, antioxidants are like
the extra boost of protection,” Dr. Hirsch explains.
2. Keep pores clean. Even
the best skin care ingredients won’t work well
unless they’re applied to a
clean face. Wash morning
and night, and be sure to
take off your makeup
before you hit the gym.
3. Squeeze in some happy
time. Destressing will
help your skin stay clearer
and glowier. “Your skin
reflects where your head
is at,” says Dr. Hirsch.
“Living a content life does
things for your skin no
money can buy.”
three rules
f o r yo u r
neck & chest
1. Pretend they’re your
face! “The décolletage is
the forgotten area,” says
New York dermatologist
Heidi Waldorf, M.D. Even
women who wear SPF
on their face daily forget
that their chest and neck
are just as exposed. So
apply the same sunscreenantioxidant combo as
on your face; it’ll do the
job a few inches down.
2. Combat chest breakouts. Got chestne? “Use a
wash with salicylic acid
instead of regular soap,”
says Dr. Hirsch. One we
like is Neutrogena Body
Clear Body Wash ($7, at
drugstores). And know
that wearing sweaty gym
clothes for hours can clog
pores. Shower with an
antibacterial soap after
your workout, then run
your three thousand
errands. Body moisturizers with niacinamide (we
like Olay Total Effects
Anti-Aging Body Lotion,
$8, at drugstores) can
also work to calm redness
and inflammation, says
Dr. Waldorf.
3. Firm up. A cream with
caffeine can help your bust
look perkier and tighten
skin temporarily. “It’s great
for a night out,” says Dr.
Hirsch, “but doesn’t provide long-term effects.”
and two
rules for
yo u r l e g s …
1. Even out your skin. Got
dark spots or uneven
patches? Give your legs a
weekly rubdown with an
exfoliator that contains
lactic acid or alpha
hydroxy acid. They both
speed up cell turnover
to uncover fresher skin
faster. Another great leg
slougher: shaving. “You’re
taking off layers of the
epidermis, too,” says Dr.
Hirsch. “I always tell
women to shave before
self-tanning.”
2. Scar-proof your legs.
If you’re prone to bug bites,
avoid perfume, scented
lotions and other products,
and bright clothing when
you’re planning to spend
time outdoors—they
attract insects. Replace
your razors often to avoid
nicks, and don’t scratch
bumps or dry spots. “That’s
what causes an inflammatory response” that makes
you itch more, says Dr.
Hirsch. To fade existing
scars, try a treatment like
Mederma Scar Cream +
SPF 30 ($20, at drugstores). You may start to
see results within 10 weeks.

back
1. Keep bacne in check. If
back breakouts are more
than an occasional issue,
use that salicylic acid
cleanser, but otherwise,
“a bar of Lever 2000 will
work just fine,” says Dr.
Hirsch. And when you
condition your hair, rinse
thoroughly—rich moisturizers may lead to zits.
2. Slough skin in the
shower. Exfoliating your
back is tricky—no wonder
it’s often neglected. Dr.
Hirsch’s tip: Spread scrub
onto the wall of your
shower, lean back against
it and wiggle. Try a rich
exfoliator with smooth,
round beads for gentle
scrubbing. A good one is
Aveeno Positively Nourishing Smoothing Body
Wash ($7, at drugstores).
