Inside theAcademy
Dear Alums, Parents, Guardians, and Friends,
We are very excited about this year for a number of reasons. First, the Academy is celebrating its 90th year. The
Academy started with only a handful of students and a vision. The vision of the Dominican Order was to establish
a school, named in honor of Pere Henri Lacordaire, where students could learn amid Christian values and transmit
them to the society in which we live. Today, our mission and programs remain true to the historical description of
the school “By a constant and systematic stress on the cultural and moral side of education, Lacordaire has
evolved from a small experimental theory in education to a well-established and practical school unique in
its type and effective in its training”. Today, the Academy has grown in student population, facilities, academic
offerings, and extracurricular activities. It also remains a place where, as a community, we are engaged in preparing
students for life’s journey.
Another important event that occurred this year was the historic achievement of the first ever consolidated
Academy PreK-12 Middle States Association Accreditation. With data gathered via student/parent/alum surveys,
standardized tests results, and much discussion, we developed four goals, two at the Academy level, and one for
each division. The academy wide goals are Going Green and strengthening the Math & Science Departments.
The Secondary Division objective is Writing across the Curriculum and the Elementary Division objective is
strengthening the Religious Studies Department.
We are thrilled about the increase of Alum reunions, visits, and interest about the happenings at Lacordaire.
If you chose to visit us, you will see that although we have expanded the use of the Academy’s resources for all the
students and made improvements to the curriculum and infrastructure, Lacordaire Academy’s traditions remain a
vital part of each student’s experience. No matter where you go in the Academy, you will see creative student art,
hear spirited discussions, view student projects, and feel the passion of our terrific staff and faculty.
You may already know that the Annual Fund is one way we are able to keep our Academy operating. As in
most independent schools, tuition does not cover the true cost of educating each student; we rely on donations to
make-up the difference. Further, Annual Fund donations help us sustain and improve our programs, compensate
and provide for our faculty, offer professional development, minimize tuition increases, and provide financial
assistance.
Without a doubt, our students, staff, and faculty are extremely blessed to be a part of such a wonderful
community. I wish to offer a sincere thank you to those who have supported us in our mission to educate and
develop young women and men into confident leaders and scholars. I hope you will join me and the entire Lacordaire
community in continuing your support of the students, teachers, and traditions of the Academy. Thank you!
Be well and God Bless,
Brian F. Morgan

The Four Pillars of Dominican Life
Study, Prayer, Community and Service continues to inspire and motivate students, staff and family at
Lacordaire Academy. As the Academy looks forward to another 90 years, we look back on the Dominican heritage
and ideals with which we began.
Prayer: This year, 10 juniors were inducted as new preachers and Eucharistic ministers, and a student
gospel choir was formed. They have been very active in the planning and celebration of liturgies.
Study: In the Elementary Division, a new Religion curriculum was instituted for Pre-K to 8th grade. Also, a
junior high Religion coordinator, Sister Patricia Tully, OP joined the staff.
Community: While the Academy said goodbye, after 14 years, to Margarita Elkin, we welcomed Albert
Ganter as the new Director of Music. He brings a wealth of knowledge about liturgical music to the Academy
and has inspired the choir and students to participate in liturgies.
Service: The Academy continues to shine as a beacon of hope and help to many people. In December,
students from the Preachers and National Honor Society volunteered to spend the day at St. John’s Soup
Kitchen in Newark. In addition, responding to the emergency in Haiti, the students raised over $1000
through a Pizza lunch and Bake Sale.
Historic Achievement
Lacordaire Academy successfully completed its Middle States Accreditation Review to be accredited as one school
Pre K-12. In the words of the chair of the validation team, “I would like to end with words that were meaningful
to the Validation Team as we heard them [from the Lacordaire community], “Our students are the HEART
of Lacordaire Academy.” The Middle States Validation Team agrees with this statement and believes that the
students’ hearts, minds and spirit are in exceptional hands.”
Secondary Division
The Lacordaire Lions had another exciting fall/winter season. All the teams put forth a diligent effort throughout
their competitions. Each team welcomed the challenge of becoming a member of the newly formed S.E.C. (Super
Essex Conference) which allowed the Lions to compete against teams within Essex County.
Tennis welcomed their new head coach Priscila Abril, and assistant coach, Lordale Benosa to the team
program. The team worked nicely together recording one of their best performing seasons in the past several
years, earning 7 victories.
Soccer was plagued with injuries throughout the season. The Lions performed extremely well and improved
dramatically by the end of the season.
Volleyball faced the challenges of participating in a higher tier in the S.E.C. They made an amazing effort,
evident as they defeated difficult opponents (Barringer and East Orange) back-to-back!
Basketball has embraced the coaching philosophy of coach Henry Jeong. The team has played excellent
basketball, seeing improvements at both team and individual levels.
The Cheerleading squad has come together to support our Basketball team. The girls have learned new
cheers, received new uniforms and made a dramatic improvement in the participation at home games.
Elementary Division
The Lacordaire sports program is growing with the addition of several clubs, clinics and teams all made possible
through the help of dedicated parents, alum coaches, and moderators.
Clinics Soccer clinics are offered to grades 1-5, flag football to boys in grades K-8, tennis clinics to grades
3-8 and a running club for grades 5-8. A K-8 golf clinic will be offered as well.
Volleyball offered as a clinic in the fall to grades 4-8, begins their official season in the spring.
Basketball - The boys’ basketball team for grades 6-8 has grown so popular that a coed clinic for
grades 4-8 was added. Lacordaire will offer a girls basketball team for grades 6-8 next year. The annual awards
dinner in late spring will recognize all of our student athletes and volunteers. ✎

ANNUAL GIVING REPORT
2009 Academic Year July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009
During the fragile economic times of the 2009 academic year, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s inspiring words best reflected the Academy’s commitment to
educational excellence, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future”. The Lacordaire community gave
generously of time, talents and treasure to sustain our mission to empower and nurture students intellectually, socially and spiritually. We gratefully
acknowledge the support of families, students, staff, alum, trustees, Sisters of St. Dominic, businesses, foundations and friends. Thank you.

Reflections
By Lauren Mazzari: Head of Elementary Division
As Lacordaire celebrates its 90th year, the Elementary Division celebrates not only the past but an exciting future.
The academic year 2009-10 brought many new additions, including new curriculum and textbooks for math,
science and religion classes, new faculty, new extracurricular activities, and even a new uniform!
In November, Lacordaire received recommendation for Middle States Accreditation for Growth as a single
academy. Co-Chairs Suzanne Bilicska and Christine Millar did a great job coordinating our efforts and guiding
us in this undertaking. The Academy truly impressed the Validation Team with our faculty’s talent and dedication, our student body and what Lacordaire accomplishes on a daily basis.
As usual our parent community has been very active supporting the school with fundraisers and fun raisers,
coaching teams and starting new clubs. Parents of alum and alum themselves help out by moderating forensics,
flag football, basketball and soccer clinics. The fact that alum continue to give back to Lacordaire with their
time and talent long after graduation speaks volumes.
The school made great strides with technology this year by acquiring new Smart Boards, lap tops, projectors and Internet resources, such as eConnect Call to Faith. Math and science websites were used to support our
textbooks and provide additional practice for our students. Weekly emails reduced the volume of paper in the
Thursday envelopes, and the school website was updated to include new photos, sport schedules, handbooks,
Middle States updates, and weekly newsletters.
The Elementary Division’s enrollment climbed to over 150 students this year. In order to meet the demands
of a growing student body, we changed class schedules to coincide with the Secondary Division’s. This helped
maximize use of the facilities, such as the gym, cafeteria, computer lab, and art room.
As we move forward into the future, we continue to build on the successes of the past: a tradition of
excellence, a vibrant faith community and a nurturing environment to grow and learn. ✎
Academy Establishes St.Dominic Fund
“Lord, to Thee have I cried, turn not Thy face from my petition, but listen to my cry,”
St. Dominic (1170-1201)
Sadly, tragedy does touch our students’ lives. Several school families confront catastrophic illness and disaster each year. Bake sales, raffles and
other small fundraisers have helped in the past. The Lacordaire community has been thoughtful and generous in their support of families who
are suffering. The establishment of the St. Dominic Fund will help the Academy provide tuition aid for
school families during a time of catastrophic illness and disaster. Please consider a donation to the St.
Dominic Fund in your family’s name or in memory or honor of a loved one. Right now, we can share
with you that we are seeking support to help provide a scholarship for first grader, Matthew Gasak. His
Mom was struck by a car in December and is in a coma. The family has incurred enormous medical
debt. At this time, it would be of great help if we could raise monies for Matthew’s tuition.
Your donation to the St. Dominic Fund is tax deductible as allowed by law. Please make your
check payable to Lacordaire Academy or donate securely online at www.lacordaire.net. Please indicate
that your donation is to be directed to the St. Dominic Fund. If you have any questions, contact Cathy
Johnson in the Business Office at 973-744-1156 Ext. 20. Thank you for your compassion and support
of Lacordaire students and families. ✎

2010 Alum Gathering at Lacordaire Academy
In 2009, classmates from 1964 – 2005 thoroughly
enjoyed an evening of “Cocktails, Camaraderie &
Catching Up” at the Upper Montclair Country
Club. Laughter (and an occasional gasp at a
yearbook picture) predominated as teachers and
alum caught up on family news and careers and
reminisced about school days.
