ANDREW POLLARD DIRECTED BY ADAM SUNDERLAND PUPPETRY BY LEE THREADGOLD
“Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of Rum!”
Join young Jim Hawkins on a thrilling quest for buried treasure
this Christmas! Swashbuckling sword fights, saucy sea shanties,
skeletons, storms, seasickness and scurvy - Treasure Island has
the lot! It’s a ripping yarn and a coming-of-age story rolled into
one, packed with the most colourful characters ever to tread the
boards (or walk the plank). Meet Blind Pugh, Black Dog, Ben
Gunn - and of course that wily old sea dog Long John Silver and
his parrot Captain Flint. So tuck a broom under your arm, strap
the budgie to your shoulder and start the chorus of “Yo ho ho and
a bottle of rum” as you step aboard the good ship Hispaniola to
begin the adventure of a lifetime. But beware of the Black Spot!!
A great family show suitable for everyone aged 7 – 107!

Ludwig String Trio & Bengt Forsberg
Wednesday 27 January, 8pm
Brahms Piano Quartet in C minor Op.60, Schumann Piano Quartet in E flat Op.47,
Dvorak Piano Quartet in E flat Op. 87
When world-class musicians get together to do what they love most, magic
happens - as is the case when the Ludwig String Trio are joined by top Swedishel
pianist Bengt Forsberg. The Brahms piece is full of an energetic yet disturbing
vigour, reflecting his turbulent self-doubt. Schumann was inspired by the music of
Beethoven which is evident in his Op.47 quartet. Dvorak’s Op.87 quartet premiered
just days before he started writing the Dumky piano trio, heard earlier in the series.
With Peter Cropper (violin), James Boyd (viola), Paul Watkins (cello).
Red Priest
The Bach Project
This is Bach as you’ve never heard him before! Red Priest take a look at the greatest
genius of the Baroque era, adding their legendary creativity, wit and virtuosity along
the way. Hear some of the most sublime adagios ever composed, a mix of delights
taken from his flute, oboe and violin sonatas, cello and keyboard suites and witness
an epic performance of the great Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Watch and hear
them at www.piersadams.com/RedPriest
“Virtuosity, verve and creative spontaneity are fused together in a way that makes
the impact positively volcanic.” Daily Telegraph
Wednesday 16 June, 8pm
Prokofiev Quintet Op.39, Martinu Nonet, Schumann Piano Quintet in E flat Op.44
A programme of unjustly neglected works! Prokofiev’s Quintet was commissioned for a
circus-themed ballet called Trapeze and is quirky, fun and not to be taken too seriously.
Martinu’s Nonet looks back to some of his inspirations; the music of Haydn and the
tunes of his Czech homeland. Schumann’s Piano Quintet is widely acknowledged as
one of the favourite works in the genre. Two days after completing it he started writing
his Op.47 piano quartet, yet the two works could not be more different.

The enduring success of Steeleye Span is one
of the great stories in rock music, as 2009 sees
them celebrate an incredible forty years together.
The current line-up of Maddy Prior, Peter Knight,
Liam Genockey, Ken Nicol and Rick Kemp will be
spending the fortieth anniversary year in much the
same way as every other; playing live with two UK
tours plus visits to Australia and the USA, making
music and releasing a new album that sees them
bucking their own trend and going back to their root
with the interpretation of traditional song. This has
always been the Steeleye way - tied not to the past,
the present or the future, but simply timeless.
JIM MARSHALL AUDITORIUM
Steve Reich Drumming (Part 1), Nigel Westlake Calabash, Jan Bradley Supersonic, plus new works
by Paul Tanner, Julie Cooper and 4-MALITY’s own Sophie Hastings
Throw away any preconceptions about “just percussion” – 4-MALITY is
both visually and musically inspiring. Their virtuosic musicality and unique
soundscape unite audiences of all tastes and ages. Last year saw their BBC
Proms debut – watch and hear them at www.4mality.com. After the concert, go

Over the past 25 plus years Magic have built their
reputation and following by performing Queen
classics like Killer Queen, A Kind Of Magic and
Bohemian Rhapsody - music of great complexity
both vocally and instrumentally - to an incredibly
high standard. There is no attempt to emulate
Queen visually in their concert, but rather to
celebrate the music of one of the greatest bands of
all time by performing it superbly live and better
than anyone else - with the exception, perhaps, of
the originals, Queen themselves!

The loveable legends return to administer the
annual dose of fun-filled festive cheer! Their
claims to fame are too many to list in full but
here’s a few: it was watching the Barron Knights
at Aylesbury Town Hall in 1961 that inspired Bill
Wyman to go home and buy a guitar. The Barron
Knights are the only group to have toured with
The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Elton John
was their session pianist when he was still known
as Reg Dwight. Oh, and they’ve sold more comedy
records than any other band on Earth. Welcome
back, boys!

Autumn 2009 is an exciting time for the
Mercury-nominated band formerly known as
Rachel Unthank & The Winterset. Having
established themselves as the most innovative
English folk band in modern history, The
Unthanks have taken an audacious step
sideways, with a new extended line-up
including string quartet, brass and tuned
percussion. Forging links between folk worlds
old, new and other, they are the inheritors,
curators and distorters of Tyneside’s traditions,
known for their timeless, unsentimental and
quietly subversive tales of loss, fear, booze,
brawls and sorrow.

In fact they are the guitar players with the
legendary band Little Feat, and now they’ve joined
forces to form an acoustic duet that will quite
frankly blow you away, performing songs from their
Little Feat catalogue - and more - with a decidedly
different twist. They first played together on the

Show of Hands’ inspired frontman and Radio 2
Folk Award winner Steve Knightley - hailed as one
of England’s best songwriters - joins us in solo
mood as he tours his striking new album Track
of Words Retraced. This new work is so called
because it revisits Track of Words, his first solo
album of a decade ago. This re-recording, perhaps
more than any of his other work, underlines the
sheer diversity of Knightley’s songwriting, stripping
away the bigger production feel of the original
album and lending it a more subtle, acoustic style.
Jon Allen has already achieved much in his short
career. Similar to contemporaries Jose Gonzales and
Damien Rice whilst being evocative of the late 60s
folk-rock scene, his sound shows influences from the
early Faces to the legendary John Martyn in his Solid
Air era. Seen here at The Stables last season as part
of the Footprints tour, this summer saw the release
of his debut album Dead Man’s Suit, with its singles
Going Home and In Your Light being championed
by both BBC Radios 1 and 2 and finding fans in
songwriting heavyweights Guy Chambers and James
Morrison. A star in the making.

She first successfully explored the fusion of
these two in her second album La Juderia but
then rediscovered her Ladino roots with her
third album Mano Suave. For her brand new
fourth album Sentir she has finally found a
vision that effortlessly integrates these various
musical directions. The album draws songs not
only from the Ladino and flamenco traditions
but also from contemporary material written
by Yasmin and even Leonard Cohen, with a
remarkable and fresh version of Hallelujah.

Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. Stew says “ In this show,

device for disparate material possibly concerning
English Heritage, Top Gear, The Olympics,
emigration, prawns, Bella Pasta, The National
Trust, farmers, DH Lawrence, piglets, cathedrals,

some punchy stuff, inexplicable hostility towards
relatively innocuous figures, a quasi-serious bit at
the end, and new for 2010 – a song!

he dare push it, and left to marvel at the man’s

Horse recorded Coming Up For Air (her 8th album)
after losing both parents in quick succession. In
it she shares her experience of loss, love, and even
lust! This show encompasses these brilliant new
songs and glorious back catalogue with full band.
Will Young has recently covered her song Careful
which promises to introduce her to a much wider
audience. She is phenomenal!
Guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya’s explosive guitar
playing, soul-driven voice, hard work and constant
touring have propelled him to the outer reaches of
the blues-rock stratosphere. Legendary bluesman
Albert Collins taught him the secrets of his own “icy
hot” style of blues guitar and later John Mayall was
blown away by Montoya’s playing, resulting in ten
years on the road with the Bluesbreakers. At every
show the fans’ jaws drop and ciritcs rave over his
mind-bending guitar licks and impassioned vocals.
Calling Kate Walsh a singer songwriter is like saying
Van Gogh was a cartoonist. Kate is different. She’s
been likened to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Jane
Austen, and when she sits down to write a song she
bares her soul with shocking candour. Her songs are
about relationships, and listening to their pain and
fragility you’d imagine she must be permanently
teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown, but
far from it. Kate Walsh is warm, funny and selfdeprecating, recognising the self-indulgent nature of
the confessional songwriter’s art. She joins us with
with songs from her latest album Light and Dark.
King Pleasure & the Biscuit Boys are more than
just the world’s greatest swing band, they are
an institution! The band have been on the road
for two decades playing every European country
as well as the USA and Russia and recording
ten CDs. Dazzling musicianship, riveting stage
performances and more than 50 TV appearances
have established them as the Kings of Swing. Join
them for a joyous jamboree of jazz!

A formidable flamenco-jazz guitar virtuoso,
Eduardo Niebla is a master among today’s
generation; technically superb, breathtakingly
versatile, supernaturally talented. Inspired by
tours to India and the Middle East and by his
adopted Yorkshire homeland, Eduardo presents
his stunning new album in memory of his mother
- intricately brilliant, passionate flamenco infused
with a myriad of Eastern colours and a gypsy-jazz
edge. World class guitar playing at its very best.
Described by The Guardian as “the finest
instrumental duo on the traditional scene” and
twice winners of the BBC Radio 2 folk award for
Best Duo, Spiers and Boden have made the genre
of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their
own stomping ground. Loud and proud, they create
a multitude of musical textures on a handful of
acoustic instruments, spinning traditional stories
and dance tunes that are as much at home on the
main stage of Cambridge Folk Festival as they are
in a lock-in at the local pub.

Acker recorded his well-loved clarinet classic
Stranger On The Shore in 1961 and this became

in the UK and USA and is now the 58th bestselling record since the charts began. He’s
received many awards and gold and platinum
records in a career spanning over 50 years. A
sparkling evening of foot-tapping trad jazz from
this great Stables favourite.
We’ve had the ukulele revival, now here comes the
mandolin revival! The Mandolinquents are Britain’s
first modern mandolin quartet and their infectious
sense of fun influences everything they play, from
lively reels to traditional airs and hot swing to
ragtime. In the 1930s mandolin orchestras were
all the rage - every self-respecting town had one.
Today the mandolin is undergoing a huge revival in
folk and indie bands as well as in classical circles,
and its years of confinement to back bedrooms
(where legions of enthusiasts had been hiding
away) are at an end.
After many ups and downs with major record
labels Jill Sobule took the unique step to fund
her new album California Years Vol 1 by asking
her fans for donations. Within 3 months she had
raised the money and now she brings her new
album to the UK. Upon hearing this Bob Harris
instantly booked her for a session on his show.
Jill is truly one of the great singer-songwriters
of our time; there are few who possess the same
sense of melody and virtually none who can write
lyrics the way that she can. This is a great chance

the Sands Hotel, Las Vegas. Featuring Sinatra’s
best-loved hits such as Under My Skin, Come Fly
with Me and My Kind of Town and complimented
by Quincy Jones’ reworking of Sinatra’s musical
arrangements for “the most swinging band of all

17-piece Big Band Orchestra, Triffitt recreates all
this with warmth, style, good humour and above all,
an exquisite transformation into Sinatra.
Mamer is one of China’s most original young

foot in the past and the other in the future,
infused with an alt.country sensibility and
touched with the renegade spirit of everyone
from Woody Guthrie to the Velvet Underground

strong musical tradition of Kazakh nomadic

songs of the open grasslands, deeply rooted

with Western folk and rock with virtuosic
performances on guitar, dombra and other

Saturday 20 March, 8pm
Tickets: £14
Lucy Porter’s latest solo show is a witty romp through
the history of gold. In these times of recession, gold
is prized more highly than ever, as other forms of
currency grow worthless. What’s so special about
gold, and why is it that human beings have long been
obsessed with the yellow, shiny stuff? The show will
feature live alchemy, a tribute to Mr T and a very
valuable, big gold thing with security guards and
everything! Lucy’s tour shows have been sell-out hits
every year since 2005. Fool’s Gold promises to be
another gilt-edged treasure.

Koshka return to The Stables after the
enthusiastic response to their Russian Winter &
Gypsy Fire tour in 2008. The trio are Russian
violinists Oleg Ponomarev and Lev Atlas
alongside Scottish guitarist Nigel Clark, playing
vibrant, enthralling music, brimming with
dazzling skill, wit and innovation. Most of the
music is written by Oleg and clearly shows his
gypsy heritage, but also includes elements
reminiscent of hot-club, classical, jazz
and Balkan music, as Koshka take gypsy music
to increasingly dizzy heights of invention and
creativity. Their combination of conservatoire
rigour, wild gypsy flair, abundant technical
ability and passionate performance creates
breathtaking music.

Aly Bain is the best known and most significant
fiddle player in the Celtic tradition. He is rightly
regarded as Scotland’s supreme fiddler - arguably
the finest of all time. Phil Cunningham is a world
famous accordion player and composer. Aly and
Phil have been touring together since 1988 to
packed concert halls, recording their first album
The Pearl together in 1994. Since then they have
toured extensively across Europe. In 2005 they
won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Duo Award,
and have also been nominated in the Scottish Trad
Music Awards 2006 for the Live Act of the Year.
As seen as on Live At The Apollo, Friday Night
with Jonathan Ross, The Secret Policeman’s Ball,
8/10 Cats and Have I Got News for You, Shappi
Khorsandi is one of the hottest comedy prospects
in the country. She’s feisty, flirty and effortlessly
funny she handles every subject with a razor sharp
wit, softened only by her deliciously dizzy delivery
and endless charm. Shappi is also the best-selling
author of A Beginner’s Guide to Acting English,
published by Bloomsbury.
The Tiger Lillies are the Godfathers of alternative
cabaret. Direct from a sell-out London West-End
run and the Edinburgh Festival, they’re bringing
their dark and deviant theatrics to The Stables,
performing songs from the Olivier Award-Winning
smash Shockheaded Peter, their Grammy nominated
album The Gorey End (featuring songs adapted from
the stories of writer and illustrator Edward Gorey) and
other deranged favourites. Shocking songs of naughty
girls and boys and cautionary tales to chill the blood.
Suitable for age 16+.
600,000 people went to the Isle of Wight in August
1970 to see the only real legendary rock guitarist
the world has ever seen – Jimi Hendrix. How could
anyone possibly measure up to him? Well, when
you listen to Are You Experienced featuring John
Campbell, you very quickly realise that it can be
done! The guitar work is note perfect, and at the
same time beautifully fluent. The voice IS Hendrix,
and the persona of the man himself is on the stage,
personified by John Campbell, who bears a striking
physical resemblance to Jimi.

“Wonderful. Worth raving about.”
Sir Michael Parkinson
Former e.s.t. bassist Dan Berglund releases his first
solo recording in early 2010, a brand new set of
self-penned music that draws from his background
in both jazz and rock, and of course grows out of his
seminal role in the extraordinary e.s.t story. After
the untimely death of Esbjörn Svensson in June
2008, Dan and drummer Magnus Öström decided
that it would be impossible to just add another
musician to the trio to replace Esbjörn. Berglund
has assembled a terrific quartet of fellow Swedes,
playing music that stretches from e.s.t to Pink Floyd
to Royksopp to Arvo Part.

The Urban Folk Quartet has a truly unique sound,
with each member bringing elements to the
mix – Paloma’s Gallician roots, guitarist Frank’s
obsession with the oud and Joe’s ear for a good
rock groove, all underpinned by percussionist
Tom’s cajón-based drum set-up. Virtuosic not just
in feel and technical ability but also in musical
concept, The Urban Folk Quartet is a comingtogether of four of the most inspired artists
working in world music today.
With her highly acclaimed album Mudshow
(described by Rolling Stone magazine as “A small
miracle,”) singer-songwriter Krista Detor was
established as a gifted musician on the world
stage. She’s subsequently released the followup album, Cover Their Eyes, continuing to push
her musical boundaries while remaining close
throughout to the delicate, thoughtful lyrical
thread that defines her work. She defies genre,
but the quality of her writing has been compared
to the likes of Leonard Cohen, Laura Nyro, Tom
Waits and Joni Mitchell, company she is more than
happy to keep.

Singer-songwriter Judith Owen is best known to
UK audiences as the exquisite voice of Richard
Thompson’s 1000 Years of Popular Music, and
most recently one half of the two-woman theatrical
performance Live From the Priory (pairing her
emotionally insightful music with the true and
poignantly funny story of comedienne Ruby Wax’s
road to recovery). Described by Jamie Cullum as
“a female Randy Newman,” Owen draws from her
rich back catalogue and from latest release The
Beautiful Damage - Songbook Vol. 1.
“Judith Owen has the kind of wailing folk-jazz
voice that slices away surfaces to touch the
vulnerable emotional nerve endings and leave you
quivering.” New York Times

Lucy Wainwright Roche is the daughter of two
performing musicians, Loudon Wainwright and
Suzzy Roche (The Roches). Her childhood was
spent living out of a suitcase, either on the
road with her parents or being ferried around to
different relatives in her big musical clan. After
singing backup with her brother Rufus Wainwright,
she decided to explore her life-long relationship
to singing and song writing. Described by the New
York Times as having the best qualities of both
parents and a voice “clear as a bell”, Lucy is a
young singer with a unique perspective, refreshing,
straightforward and unadorned, last seen at The
Stables supporting Eddi Reader.

Kieran Goss
Date:
Friday 12 March, 8.45pm
Tickets: £12
Kieran Goss has long been hailed as one of
Ireland’s leading performers and songwriters. Over
the last 20 years, he has quietly and consistently
delivered songs of rare quality and his wonderful,
deceptively simple melodies have won him fans
across the globe. But it’s live in front of an
audience where he really shines: those who have
seem him in concert know that a Kieran Goss show
is an evening of great songs, sung from the heart,
all delivered with an easy grace and humour.
“The sense of fun is tremendous, the playing first
rate and the songs are sheer quality. The encores
were genuine, but only because the man is too.”
