T
IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK, THE
STORY THEY WOULD TELL IS ONE
OF GREAT DESIGN.
by Cindy Ratcliff
here’s something
to be said for a
great wall, and
designers today
are letting walls
do all of the
talking. No longer content to
be a simple room divider, walls
are taking on a life of their own
through a blend of traditional
materials that give them personality like never before.
Today’s walls are bold,
unique and could quite possibly
be the most memorable element
in the room. A dramatically
designed wall creates a focal
point, even in spaces with a
more traditional design. From
wood paneling to textured tiles
to ornate wainscoting, there is
a wall design to fit any taste and
any space.
Even wallpaper is making a
comeback this year, according
to Eva Quateman, principal
in charge and lead designer at
Chicago-based Eva Quateman
Interiors. Not truly popular
since the 1980s, today’s wallpaper is anything but out of date,
especially when you use it in a
non-traditional context.
“I love wallpaper on ceilings.
It’s a great look,” said Quateman, whose design firm
provides both residential and
6
INRESIDENCE
commercial interior design and
renovation services for projects
across the country. “I also like
to use it in different applications, such as in cabinets or in
the back of bookcases. It’s like a
little surprise.”
A good wall covering isn’t
just for large spaces, either.
Quateman said she likes them
for small rooms, too. Don’t be
afraid to use them in a powder
room or even a hallway. “They
can add a big impact to a small
space,” she said.
Whether you’re starting
small or going big, dressing a
wall should be a part of your
overall room design. Here are
some more ideas to keep you on
trend as you consider revitalizing your room.
A FEEL FOR IT
Walls are a great place for
adding texture to a space. Along
just one wall or as part of the
overall space, texture adds interest and creates warmth. Texture
looks especially on target as
part of a muted color and is
an expert way to add depth to
the room. Choose from nubby
wallpaper, treated plaster or
coverings designed to mimic
brick or other stonework. You’ll
also find an ample supply of tex-
SUMMER 2015
tured tiles and panels that offer
a three-dimensional design.
FABRICATION
Making the short jump from
window to wall, fabric can
completely transform a room.
Velvets in dark, rich shades or
a lighter-weight length of fabric
with a simple or geometric design can offer instant style as a
wall covering. Best of all, fabrics
add versatility, too, because they
are easier to change out than
traditional wallpaper or plasters.
HEAVY METAL
Metallics are big again this
year — literally big. Imagine
a textured metallic that spans
an entire wall. It adds instant
sophistication to any space and
can work for contemporary and
traditional décor in any room.
Combine this look with mirrors
and cozy lighting for a more
dramatic effect.
A NEW DIMENSION
Painted wood may not sound
like a bold new trend for walls,
but when you pair the right
colors with the right woodwork,
it can completely transform
the room. Think wainscoting,
beadboard and molding, only
instead of the glossy white paint
that usually is associated with
them, you paint them the same
color as the wall. This is especially striking when combined
with a dark wall color.
IN A WORD
The writing is on the wall —
literally. One of the biggest
trends is taking the written
word and putting it big and bold
on a wall. Introduced last year,
it continues to make a statement in 2015 as a way to truly
personalize your space. You’ll
find word and phrases printed
on ready-to-hang wallpaper,
but you also can custom-order
decals if you’re looking for just
the right words.

LIGHTING
TIPS FOR LUXE
LIGHTING STRAIGHT
FROM THE 2015
DREAMHOME.
by Janeane Thompson
L
ighting is often
one of the most
underutilized
and overlooked
elements in interior
design. On the
most basic level, what’s the use
of creating a luxury space if
there isn’t enough lighting to
see the artistic elements of the
room.
Playing it safe with lighting
is a real pity, according to
Anne Coyle, with Anne Coyle
Interiors and the creative mind
behind the 2015 DreamHome
dining room at Merchandise
Mart.
“Lighting is one of the really
fun parts about doing a room,”
said Coyle. “Light and reflection … and shiny accents are
what make a room. If there’s
no reflection, light or metal
or crystal, I think a room feels
super dull.”
Similarly, Marshall Erb,
from Marshall Morgan Erb

Design Inc., said lighting is one
of the main elements he focuses
on when creating a space.
“I am a big fan of wall sconces
and wall fixtures in general,” said
Erb. “Not everybody has a collection of artwork, so what wall
sconces and wall fixtures can do
is provide lighting via architecture. They provide depth where
you’re drawn to look across the
room at [the lighting].”
Erb is such a large proponent
of lighting in design that he
centered his concept for the 2015
DreamHome foyer at Merchandise Mart on a vintage Tom
Greene chandelier, originally
manufactured in the 1970s.
Traditionally, foyers are spaces
that people move through quickly, so Erb’s intention was to design
a space that had enough dramatic
impact to be memorable.
“The starting point … was
the light fixture,” said Erb. “I’ve
seen other works by that same
artist. I knew that based on
the scale and proportion of the
space I had to deal with I needed
something that was going to be
able to hold its own. From there,
I created a collection around it.”
In a similar way, Coyle chose
the Ebanista chandelier hanging
in her DreamHome dining room
design to make a big impact on
the space and create interest.
“The lighting fixture I chose
is one of the two stars of the
10
INRESIDENCE
show,” said Coyle. “That’s how
I feel lighting in a dining room
should be. It’s one of the few
places in the house where people
aren’t just walking through the
room, so you can really have
something huge and hang it
really low and get a lot of impact
out of that.”
Aside from being pleasing
to the eye, dramatic lighting
features, similar to the ones used
in the dining room and foyer,
can be used by designers to say
something about their clients (or
fictional clients, as was the case
with the DreamHome rooms).
Pieces with personality can
communicate volumes about a
homeowner’s interests and lifestyle, as is the case with Coyle’s
fictional client and her choice of
the Ebanista chandelier.
“It states what kind of house
this is,” said Coyle. “It’s kind of
old fashioned in its appeal, but
also super modern because of the
scale of it in such a small room.”
Although chandeliers are at
the center of both the dining
room and foyer DreamHome
designs, Erb warned that
low-hanging ceiling fixtures
should be used only where
appropriate. He notes that not
many people have ceilings high
enough to effectively use chandeliers in living spaces other
than dining rooms or kitchens.
Fixtures hanging from the
SUMMER 2015
ceiling really need something
to anchor them, such as a table,
kitchen island or, in the case of
the 2015 DreamHome foyer, a
large vase of flowers.
With all of the innovative
ways designers can integrate
lighting concepts into their designs, a central electrical control
is a must. Home automation
solutions from companies
such as Crestron, Control4
and Lutron can make all of the
difference in maximizing your
lighting choices.
“Between decorative fixtures, architectural fixtures,
indirect lighting, soffit lighting
and under-cabinet lighting,
there are so many variables. It
can create a switching nightmare,” said Erb. “I always
recommend going with an
easy-to-use application. You
can even adjust the lighting
levels of your space (with your
cell phone).”
Erb predicted that home automation systems are going to be one
of the next big trends in interior
design as a marriage between technology and design would benefit
both designers and clients alike.
“I think that whole house
control systems are going to be
more and more prevalent, said Erb.
“Not only for lighting, but also for
stereos, heating and air conditioning, security, window shades and
window treatments.”
