LETTER RIP
LIFE IS BUT A VAPOR
HERE ONE MOMENT AND THEN GONE THE NEXT
I’ll say it... cancer sucks.
Yes it does, like a Hoover Vacuum.
But even worse, death sucks.
This week death took its fill. Lisa Coe Fike lost
her life leaving behind a 9-year old daughter. I
can’t imagine how that would feel. Your mom
is gone. That would be a
natural comment if your
mom was 90ish and you
were 60ish, but not this
young. This was tragic
and unseen. How does one
prepare for this?
The great people who run
the Two Mules Tavern, as
well as all the friends she
made working there, have
assembled a benefit for
Ken Petty the sake of Fike’s 9-year
old daughter. Ms. Clinton
would be correct in this that it is going to take a
village to raise this little girl.
Lisa Coe Fike was a kind soul. She was usually
the one handling the bar at Two Mules Tavern
every time I went in to visit with management.
She had great charm and a smile that would melt
a heart from a good distance. She’s gone and
now her friends need your help to make sure her
daughter is going to be provided for, educationally as well as for certain live events that are
certain to come her way. Lisa may not be with
us any longer, but we are going to do our best to
make sure her daughter lacks nothing.
Please consider helping. Two Mules’ Colin
Chapman has established a trust account on GoFundMe.com for this effort.
http://www.gofundme.com/qj4ur4
Considering that this little girl had no choice in
the matter of her mother’s passing, please be very
generous and join with Two Mules Tavern all day
on April 11th and 12th (open noon to 2am) to remember Lisa and encourage each other to support
little Devin, her daughter.
I did say that cancer sucks, as does death. As
a older Beatles fan, we get hit by death more
frequently now-a-days. The latest was Cynthia
Lennon, first wife to John Lennon and mother of
Julian Lennon. She passed away just a few days
ago after a short battle with cancer. George Harrison, the Beatles lead guitarist, was also a victim
of cancer in 2001.
Family friends such as John Sustek, Pam
Muehler, Glenn Evans, just to name a few had
lost their life early to cancer. So, join with me and
agree that cancer sucks!
Now, what can we do about this? On April 10th,
in The Woodlands, the American Cancer Society
is holding their annual Relay for Life event at
The Woodlands High School from 7pm to 1am.
Get active and get involved. Bring awareness and
funding to the cause of defeating cancer. You may
not be able to ward off the Grim Reaper, but at
least you can tell him to come back in, say, 100
years!
It’s a sad sight driving through Old Town
Spring. The building that housed Wunsche’s
Cafe and Saloon was partially destroyed in a fire.
The entire building was damaged by the smoke.
The Public News wants us all the remember the
employees and their families who have lost their
means of support while Wunsche decides to
whether or not to rebuild.
Either way, it is a sad reminder that no everything is permanent in this world, just a vapor.

Painting with Pastels
This is an ongoing weekly course, beginning February 5, 2015. The class meets
every Thursday from 2:00pm - 4:30pm in the
upstairs classroom at the Conroe Art League
Gallery - 127 Simonton St. - Conroe, TX
77301.
Painting in pastels is quick, easy, colorful,
beautiful, very portable - and FUN! Handled
correctly, pastels will last many lifetimes and
their pure colors never fade, crack, or peel.
No stress and no pressure here to paint a masterpiece. You’ll learn how to turn “happy accidents” into a part of your painting, or erase
it - pastels are very forgiving. Everyone will
hjave a chance to experiment with different
techniques and materials, and you’ll develop
your own unique style over time.
For those who are new to art, you’ll learn
the basics of drawing and painting. For more
experienced artists who are new to pastels,
you’ll learn the characteristics and techniques
that are unique to pastels. At the end of each
class, you’ll have a finished or nearly-finished
painting to take home, ready for framing.
Each student is encouraged to learn at their
own pace. You are welcomed to do a classbased painting from reference photos provided
by the instructor, or bring in your own reference materials to use. We may also paint from
life, or go outdoors to paint as the weather
permits.
During this ongoing course, you will:
-Improve your drawing skills, including proportions and perspective.
-Learn how to see and paint values, types of
underpaintings, both wet and dry.
-Create different effects using hard vs. soft
pastels.
-Layer and blend pastels to get exactly the
color you want.
-Develop and use a portable pastel kit for
outdoor painting and travel.
-Know how to paint trees, clouds and water.
-Learn how to paint and draw from life and en
plein air (outdoors).
There’s no pressure to develop a masterpiece
or “do it right”. This class is all about having
fun and discovering the artist in you. You’ll
have lots of individual attention from the
instructor with helpful feedback so your paint-

TO THE REPUBLIC
APRIL FOOLS DAY;
A
HOLIDAY?
AIMED AT OR ESTABLISHED BY ATHEISTS?
by Bart Pearston
“One nation, under God”? I was wondering
in the pledge what the prepositional phrase “To
the Republic” that this column uses implies. It is
estimated that 31% of the 7.1 Billion humans on
the Earth are Christians, and will be celebrating
Easter this Sunday. But didn’t the 142 million or
2% of the population’s
annual holiday get overlooked? Yes we observed
numerous “holidays”
this week, but did any
of you celebrate April
1st as “Atheists Day”?
I kid you not; this was
started in 2003 and is an
“official” holiday.
Now, it may be sheer
Bart Pearston coincidence that it is also
April Fool’s Day, but
“The Public News” wishes no group to go overlooked. My atheist friends tell me they believe
in nothing, and that would certainly apply to the
responses and hypotheses the media asserted
regarding an incident at Spanish Fork River Utah,
2 weeks ago.
For those who hadn’t heard, (not surprising
BTW), On March 14th, ABC, Fox, CNN, all
covered the story of an unconscious 18 month
old Lily Groesbeck being rescued by four police
officers after being suspended upside down in
her car seat in the shallow, frozen river waters for
14 hours. Some even covered the bigger story of
what happened just before that. The girl’s mother
died immediately after the plunge over the river’s
gorge. The body camera recorded and all four
reported a voice calling, “Help me”, “help us”
as they climbed down the ravine. There was the
lifeless Lily partially submerged in her car seat.
Hypothermia and suffocation had set in so they
began immediate C.P.R.
The baby was saved and the media has been
silent on who, or what may be a better question, called them to the car. For those who don’t
believe in anything “supernatural”, I would
love to hear their explanation. “mass paracusia”
maybe? If that is the case why have none of them
ever experienced it and why did they all hear it?
How is it that they all were fully conscious and
in command of their faculties while performing
the rescue? So many questions, so few answers. I
have my own, but with the outspoken mouthpieces of the “New Atheists” wouldn’t you expect to
hear ONE (other than, “well the odds are remote,
but not impossible”)? Really? A voice from the
unconscious or a dead other is now “possible”?
If I sound patronizing, I apologize. I don’t
mean to preach, but I challenge even the most
die-hard skeptics out there to Google any of the
occurrences that day in Utah with an open mind.
The ability to believe in miracles is what makes
this week special. I almost pity those who can’t
or won’t believe in them. May each of you have a
miraculous Easter.

Englishmen” tour, using
many of the musicians
from “D&B&F”. [Note:
I attended one of the
concerts on that tour. It
was fantastic, pure musical anarchy! Between
Wilson’s on-the-fly creativity, Cocker’s maniac
performances, and the
numerous members of
the flaky cast/crew/band,
no one was ever sure
what the show would
be!]
In the early 70’s,
Wilson began his side
flirtation with country
music, and was a regular
performer at Gilley’s
Club in Pasadena. [Note:
Any of you reader’s
remember him there? I
frequented Gilleys BTM
(Before The Movie) , but
for the life of me I can’t
remember Wilson from
those days. But how
many of us really remember any of the nights at
Gilley’s ?]
Anyway, in 1973
Wilson released his first country/western album,
“Hank Wilson’s Back” (later re-released as
“Hank Wilson’s Back Vol. 1”.)
My kind of country music – good ol’ fashioned cry-in-your-beer whiny nasal hillbilly!
I think I have worn out 4 or 5 copies of this
CD. [Note: I got a copy for my Dad – my
Mom refused to let him play it in the house or
car - it was banished to the garage!] I used to
embarrass my kids by putting this CD on in the
car and singing along! (Just to give you a feel
for my singing, for 20 years in the Army I was
officially ordered NOT to sing cadences when
we marched!)
In 1984 Wilson released “Hank Wilson Vol.
II”; in 1998 he released “Legend in My Time
Hank Wilson Vol. III”; in 2000 he released
“Live at Gilley’s”; in 2001 he released “Hank
Wilson Vol. IV Rhythm & Bluegrass”; and in
2009 he released “Best of Hank Wilson”.
Oh, and in 1979 he toured with and released a
duet with Willie Nelson, “One for the Road”.
Wilson is currently still active, recording, writing, arranging and producing, and occasionally
touring. In fact, I saw him at a local club down
at Eagle Point about three years ago.
But if you do not recognize the name “Hank
Wilson”, perhaps you will recognize his other
name: Leon Russell.

PUBLIC NEWS
“Hank Wilson” is one of the recording
monikers of Claude Russell Bridges, born in
Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1942. His musical career
has spanned almost sixty years now, with six
country/bluegrass albums recorded under the
name “Hank Wilson”, plus another country duet
album with Willie Nelson.
Wilson began playing the piano at age 4, and
by age 14 he and fellow Tulsan J.J. Cale formed
a group called ‘The Starlighters’ and were
performing regularly in local nightclubs, where
they had a part in the birth of the country music
“Tulsa Sound” movement.
In 1960, Wilson moved to Los Angeles, where
he became a well-known studio and session
musician, playing piano, organ, xylophone and
guitar. He is credited on albums of that time as
“Russell Bridges”.
By the late 60’s Wilson had developed a
reputation as a songwriter, arranger, conductor
and producer . As well as working in Los Angeles, he also owned and operated the Church
Recording Studio (in an old church, naturally!)
in Tulsa.
In 1969 George Harrison sought Wilson out
for the group “Delaney & Bonnie and Friends”,
with whom he toured for two years.
Also in 1969 Wilson became the arranger
and producer for Joe Cocker, and organized
and conducted Cocker’s 1970 “Mad Dogs and

metal above breaking up sunlight into stripes of cast shadows
on the ground. The designer chose chairs that were made of
more stripes that echoed more shadows on the pavement. A
dynamic of lines, real and shadows, vibrating excitement
for the unfolding of the garden, and I thought: this is a very
thought-filled place. Designed by Hoerr Schaudt the garden
is symmetrical in a layout of a classical western garden with
green grass in a wide swath down the center after the Tulleries
in Paris. In a distance there is a hill with a waterfall splashing
down in controlled cadence over ridges of concrete. On the
walk toward the hill are various gardens on the side: I asked
Kimina, what is here that is not immediately apparent, she
answers after considering, “The sound”. Upon entry the sound
of the waterfall echoes off of the metal walls, then as you walk
the sound becomes distant in it’s dispersion in space and as
you approach the waterfall it crescendos in a peaceful way like
the sound of a friend, that you are glad to hear, come closer.
The mound is the focus of the garden and brings to mind
Stupas. They are found in Buddhist Architecture: mounds that
are surrounded by a railing creating a sacred path for circumambulation and meditation. The mound is this garden offers a
spiraling path with railings and a gentle incline to the top. This
mound is solid without interior structures.
The sculpture garden is a walkway of busts of statues of
great men from around the world- the newest arrival, the ambassador tells me, is Robert Burns, National Poet of Scotland –
think Auld Lang Syne or more appropriate to the garden: “My
luv is like a red red rose…”
This place is such a happy place: ladies sporting identical
t-shirts all First Ladies Club, a painter sitting on a stone edge
recording purples and greens in watercolor, her patient dog
at her side, Moms and Dads pushing strollers with their new
babies, as proud of their offspring as they are of their new
role in life. This is the idyllic garden for the moments of life
harmonious as this space. There are markers of history, statues
of Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Confucius statues but all like
they join us today in motion, walking.
Landscape architecture in the right hands can elevate to be
defined as the highest art.

Athens where large crowds gather, hence today a person with a
fear of crowds has agoraphobia.
We found no crowds here next
to the very popular Common
Bond Bakery but very friendly
folk who offer to take our picture, and others who cast happy
looks our way. Agora is in an
old Montrose house bedecked
with Greek symbols, faces of
Gods, and a jute box that would
play old tunes for anyone with
an extra coin or two to plunk.
A flat white was not on the
coffee menu but a competent
barista handily made one, not
with the fancy swirl of the
stereotypical heart on the top,
but one of the best I’ve had in
Houston. We made our plan
and our path on this sunny day
to find some art in Houston. We
started by heading to the Japanese Garden, but there was so
much traffic and traffic detoured we circled Hermann Park and
ended up at the McGovern Centennial Gardens across from the
Houston Museum of Natural
Science.
The entry building was
designed by the same guy
that designed the Apple
Stores- Peter Bohlin; Kimina
Jamison, Volunteer Coordinator, tells me. The entry has a
building on either side much
like an old Texas homestead,
where there are two rooms,
rather than buildings, on
either side, with a breezeway
down the middle --a kind of
old time air conditioning. This
time the surfaces are metal
and slanted to a wider opening with a grand view. Upon
entering there is a space with
tables and chairs for people to
gather. I loved the stripes of

La
Casita
Two Brothers, One Dream
NICK’S LOCAL EATS
story by Nick Rama
photos by Julie Soefer
The best kept secret in the Spring area is definitely La Casita
Mexican Cuisine. Owned by two brothers, Marco and Victor, that have been cooking really good taqueria-style food.
Breakfast tacos worth skipping your drive-thru breakfast for
that are cooked to order. Usually chorizo
(Mexican style sausage) is dripping
with grease, but theirs is definitely not
as greasy and is really flavorful. One of
my favorites is the chorizo, potato and
egg tacos on a flour tortilla. What is different about La Casita’s breakfast menu
is that they have items you don’t see at
many places like, breakfast tortas and
even corn quesadillas. The real star of La
Casita is definitely their tortas, which are
the best I have had around. The Cuban
Nick Rama torta (roasted pork, ham, melted Swiss
cheese, lettuce, onions, avocado and
pickled jalapeños on a slightly grilled Mexican bun with mayo)
Everything works so well together, the roasted pork and ham
s grilled to perfection with just the right amount of cheese not
to hide the flavors of the meats. The pickled jalapeños are not
too spicy and give the sandwich just the right amount of zing.
What is so impressive is that everything is cooked to order
and once you taste the first bite you would think you are at an
authentic taqueria in Mexico. You can really tell Marco and
Victor pride themselves on quality and freshness. La Casita has
an assortment of great tortas, tacos, Mexican burgers, quesadillas, enchiladas, tostadas and Plate Lunches. I got to sit down

a Valero gas station. The Valero gas station that we recently
opened has managed to acquire an amazing customer base.
Marco: The whole reason we started our business was so we
could reach out to the community. We wanted to have a way
that food could bring people together. We wanted to show
what our true cultural food tasted like.
our pork for four to five hours; which gives it a very homemade taste. Essentially the Cuban torta is itself a homemade
recipe; it has a richer flavor than most tortas out there. We also
have the Milanesa torta, fajita torta and our breakfast torta, all
of which are very popular.
Nick’s continued on page 16
Who taught you all to cook and where?
Marco & Victor: Our mother taught us to cook. Traditionally
she taught us how to combine ingredients, but every restaurant
we have worked at has given us all the skills that we have now.
Because of all of our experience, we understand how to manage and run a business.
What can someone expect the first time they come to La
Casita?
Marco & Victor: Our customers, new and old, always come
back. We cook fresh food every day. We never have anything
pre-made, and all of our food is high quality. Our expectation
is that customers will come back, not because we expect them
to, but because we make good food just for them. And we love
that.
Your food is better than some of the restaurants around
town, why choose a gas station to open up a location?
Marco & Victor: We wanted to change the perception of the
gas station food industry. We wanted to provide a way to establish a new standard for what this brand of food needs to be.
Just because you’re based in a gas station does not mean you
can’t have the same quality food as a restaurant.
Victor Camarillo
In my opinion La Casita has some of the best tortas in
town; tell us about your signature Cuban torta and what
are the other popular tortas on the menu?

seasoned and bursting with flavor. It’s hard
not to order steak when dining at The Capital
