Polo falls short against Wolverines
Last Friday night Shearer Stadium was packed with Polo
Panther fans who came to cheer on their 5-0 Panthers football
team as they hosted a tough Maysville team. Polo jumped out to
an early lead with two touchdown runs up the middle from senior
quarterback Wiley Martin. Polo was now 12-0 with 5:05 left on
the clock in the 1st quarter. Maysville’s junior quarterback , Matt
White, used 3 passes to put Maysville in position to score their
first touchdown of the game with 3:45 left on the clock in the
first quarter. Senior Cameron Tinder ran in a 3 yard touchdown
to get his team on the board. Polo’s defense stopped the two
point conversion. Martin scored his third and final touchdown of
the game with 5:21 left on the clock in the second quarter. The
Wolverines tied the score up 18-18 just before half time with a 2
yard touchdown by senior running back Reid Steiner. Polo nor
the Maysville executed a successful two point conversion in the
first half of the game.
With 7:15 left in the 3rd quarter the Wolverines made a one
yard touchdown by junior quarterback Matt White and got the two
point conversion. The Wolverines scored again while holding the
Panthers scoreless in the third quarter. Maysville capitalized on
both two point conversions and ran the score up on the Panthers
34 –18 at the end of the third quarter.
Polo sophomore Gunnar Martin closed the gap to 10 points
with a 24 yard touchdown run with 9:32 left on the clock in the
fourth quarter. Maysville denied the two point conversion
attempt made by Polo. Maysville answered with a 54 yard
touchdown run by White. Maysville now 40 – Polo 24 with 7:09
left in the game. Polo managed to score one more time after a
recovered fumble by Maysville quarterback White. A 5 yard
touchdown pass to sophomore Jake Leonard with 57 seconds left
on the clock brought the score for Polo to 30. There was not
enough time to close the 40-30 gap as Polo fell short to Maysville.
The Polo team rushed for 359 yards and had 5 touchdowns.
Wiley Martin was 4 of 9 on passing for a total of 40 yards. Team
rushing stats were led by senior Wiley Martin with 28 carries, 231
yards and 3 touchdowns, sophomore Ty Parker had 6 carries for 63
yards, sophomore Gunnar Martin had 4 carries with 37 yards total
and 1 touchdown, and Jake Hicks had 5 carries for 29 yards.
Receiving stats are: Brandon Richardson with 1 catch for 24 yards
and Jake Leonard 1 catch for 5 yards and 1 touchdown.
Pole defense was led by senior Jacob Hicks with 17 tackles,
Ryan Cooper and Brandon Latimer both had 12 tackles and Gunnar
martin finished with 10 tackles.
Head Coach Kyle Ross reflected on the game and had this to
say, “I am very proud of how hard our guys played and they never
gave up. We just need to see the technical issues that hurt us.
We missed assignments and had too many penalties, which can’t
happen, especially against a good football team. I fully expect
for our team to re-focus on getting better each and every week.
If we can stay healthy and learn something from this game, then
we will be a scary team to face in the play-off’s. Polo is now 5-1
in regular season games and 3-1 in Conference games. This is
Polo’s Homecoming week and they will host the Braymer Bobcats
Friday night at Shearer Stadium at 7 PM.

Polo R-7 Recycling Program
Polo National Honor Society is currently working on starting a recycling
program in our school district. We are working on getting a recycling
dumpster for our school through Deffenbaugh. The cost of the dumpster is
$39.00 per month.
Here is how you can help:
 Any type of monetary donation is appreciated (I will keep a list of
students and families that donated and put that up around the
school so students and staff can see who donated.)
 You can also sponsor a month and we will put your names on sign
around the community and school stating that you sponsored the
month. This would be good for local businesses to promote
recycling within our schools.
 Donations are due October 10th.
This is an exciting time for our school and we are the first school in the
area that is starting a school wide recycling program. We would like to
thank Midwest Lake Management for buying the first round of recycling
bins for the district. There will be plastic bottle containers located around
the school and out at the football games. Please be sure to use them!
Thanks for your help and support!

Polo added 4 more wins to their overall season record this week bringing it
to 17-5. Polo will share the Conference Championship title with Gallatin
this season and it is a first for a Polo team. Monday, September 29, Polo
hosted two teams due to rescheduled games. The first game was against
Albany. Polo beat them 8-2 in 7 innings. Senior Cati Boruch started the
game pitching for the Panthers and got the win. Boruch pitched 4 innings

pitched 3 innings giving up 1 hit, 1 run and had 6 strikeouts. Sophomore
Jenni Farmer led her team going 2-3 at bat and Copeland hit a triple.
The second game Monday was against Southwest Ludlow who gave Polo
some competition early in the game. The score remained tied 2-2 for the
3rd and 4th innings. Polo added two runs in the 5th inning and one more
in the 6th inning while Southwest Ludlow added one more in the 6th. Polo
beat SW Ludlow 7-3. Pitching was controlled by Sidney Copeland who gets
the win after giving up 4 hits, 2 walks, 1HBP, 2 earned runs, and finished
with 12 strikeouts after pitching 7 innings. Sidney Copeland and Averie
Heil both went 2-4 with Copeland hitting an out of the park homerun.
Polo traveled to Braymer on Tuesday, September 30, where senior Jessica
Farmer pitched a winning game. Polo beat the Lady Bobcats 15 – 4 in 5
innings. Offensively senior Danielle Allen went 2-3 with 3 RBI’s and two
runs scored for her team, Sidney Copeland went 2-2 with 2 walks and 1 RBI
and senior Adriana Segar went 1-2 with 2 BB and 3 runs scored.
Thursday, October 2, Polo traveled to Maysville to play their last
conference game of the season against the Wolverines. Maysville scored
the first run of the game in the first inning and held Polo scoreless for the
first 3 innings of the game. Polo scored 2 runs in the 4th inning and two
more in the 6th inning and held Maysville scoreless for the remainder of
the game beating them 4-1 in the 7th inning. Sidney Copeland pitched the
winning game and had 12 strikeouts. Sophomore Jenni Farmer hit a triple
in the 4th inning to start her team’s rally. Farmer went 1-2 on the night
and had 1 RBI. Junior Adrianna Staus kept the ball rolling when she hit
driving in the second run in the fourth inning. Staus went 1-3 on the night
and had 1 RBI. Senior Jessica Farmer laid down a great sac bunt to move
runners for her team. Senior Brooke Jones got a double in the 6th inning
and ended with 2 RBI’s to help put pressure on the Maysville team.
Polo ends their regular season 17-5. The Lady Panthers are seated 2nd in
the Class 1 District 7 games that will be held in Norborne starting on
Wednesday, October 8. Norborne is seated 1st. Polo will play the winner
of the Braymer and Tina Avalon game on Thursday, October 9, at 6:45 PM.
Polo ends season with 2nd in District play-offs
The Polo Lady Panthers and coach Becky Ross found themselves in a
similar situation this past Sunday afternoon as they warmed up to
compete against the Norborne Lady Pirates for the Class 1 District 7
Softball Championship title. Polo beat Norborne last year 1-0 to win the
District Championship. However, this year the outcome was less desirable
for the very talented Lady Panthers softball team.
To start off the District play-offs Polo played the Braymer Lady Bobcats
in a close game on Saturday afternoon in Carrolton. The sun was out for
this game and the field was payable at the Carrolton City Park. Braymer
scored in the top of the first inning and led the next 5 innings 1-0. Senior
Brooke Jones hit a base hit driving in senior Sidney Copeland who had a
base on balls to tie the game. Polo held Braymer scoreless for the
remainder of the game. Senior Cati Boruch hit a SAC Fly to score the
winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Polo beat Braymer 2-1.
Freshman Kelsey Stone pitched well for her team, but came up the losing
pitcher for the Braymer Lady Bobcats. Cati Boruch started the game
pitching for the Lady Panthers and was relieved by Copeland in the 5th
inning. Boruch ended with 3 hits, 3 strikeouts and 1 HBP. Copeland came
in and finished the game with the win with 5 strikeouts and 1 hit.
The Championship game was moved to the Carrolton City Park due to
field conditions at 3 PM on Sunday, October 12. . It was a cloudy day with
a steady drizzle that came down the entire game. The Lady Panthers led in
the bottom of the first inning with a hit by senior Brooke Jones to score
senior Adriana Segar. That would be Polo’s only run of the game. Jones
had the only other hit of the game for Polo in the fourth inning. The game
became a pitcher’s duel between senior Sidney Copeland and junior
Madison McKinny for the Lady Pirates. The Lady Pirates capitalized on a
runner who made first base by a hit pitch and a couple of Panther errors in
the bottom of the fifth inning scoring 4 runs to lead over the Panthers 41. The Panthers remained scoreless while Norborne added 2 more earned
runs to their score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Polo fell to the
Norborne Lady Pirates 6-1 in the final inning of the game. The losing
pitcher was Copeland who finished with 11 strikeouts, 4 hits, 2 HBP, and 2
earned runs. The winning pitcher was junior Madison McKinny.
Polo ended the season 18-5. Coach Becky Ross had this to say about
her team, “What a great season we had. I am proud of my seniors and
what all they have accomplished in their 4 year careers. I want to thank
them for the time and hours they have dedicated to this team and the
program. We didn’t reach our main goal that we wanted to accomplish of
being a state champions. We did accomplish two historical marks for our
program. The first was winning the most games in school history and the
second was winning the Polo High Schools first ever Grand River
Conference title in softball. This group of seniors will be missed as they
were able to help capture 2 district titles in their 4 year career. There are
many great things about our season and program, that our last game will
not define who we are. I am very proud of this team and their journey.”
Polo defeats Braymer 60-20 in Homecoming game
This was an exciting week for Polo football players, cheerleaders,
coaches and fans. Wednesday night the school and community came
together for a Pep Assembly held in the High School gym that
included the football team dancing with the cheerleaders, cheering
with the cheer squad using pom poms, team games played by
cheerleaders, softball players, managers and the softball team, the
PHS band playing the school song as the crowd sang along and pies
being thrown into the senior Homecoming Candidate’s faces by their
parents. The night ended with a traditional Bonfire Rally at the
football field where seniors Brandon Latimer, Mason Misel, Wiley
Martin, Tristan Rardon and Jacob Hicks gave pep talks to their
teammates and then thanked the community for their continued
support. Friday afternoon the Homecoming parade proceeded down
main street where the road was decorated with Panther paws,
football numbers, manager names and encouraging words from the
Polo Auxiliary Fire Department.
Friday night Polo hosted the Braymer Bobcats in their 2014
Homecoming game. Polo rushed 436 yards with 43 carries and made
7 touchdowns in the game that upset Braymer 60-20. In the first half
Polo had 33 carries for 369 yards. At halftime Polo led with a score of
54-6. The Bobcats worked hard to slow down the Polo offense that
worked efficiently. Senior Wiley Martin, quarterback ended the
game with 13 carries, 213 yards total, 2 touchdowns and 2 extra
point conversion scores. Other Polo players scoring for the Panthers
were senior Jacob Hicks with 11 carries, 77 yards, 1 touchdown and 1
pat run, sophomore Gunnar Martin 6 carries for 73 yards, 2
touchdowns and 1 PAT run, junior Ty Parker ended with 8 carries for
58 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 PAT run, and junior Israel Alsbury had 2
carries for 9 yards and 1 touchdown. Martin went 1-4 on passes for
21 yards and 1 touchdown. Junior JJ Zeigler had one 21 yard catch
and 1 touchdown for the Panthers and senior Brandon Richardson
had one catch for a PAT.
The defensive leader for Polo was sophomore Jake Leonard with 8
tackles, 1 interception for a 35 yard return and 1 deflection, senior
Jacob Hicks also had 8 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 1 deflection,
junior Brandon Hubbard and Brandon Latimer had 6 tackles and
Tristan Rardon had 3 tackles and 1 interception for a 21 yard return.
Polo is now 6-1 for the season. Coach Kyle Ross was pleased with
his team’s effort against the Bobcats and said this after the win, “We
came out and immediately ran the pace that the coaches asked of
them. We wanted to start fast and be extremely efficient on offense
in the first half, and accomplished that. The offensive line and the
defensive line controlled the game from the outset. We are going to
continue to work on our deficiencies everyday to make them
strengths as we push towards the end of the regular season.” The
Panthers football team will travel to King City next Friday to take on
the Wildcats.
During half time of the football game Polo crowned the
Homecoming king and queens and announced that the Polo
senior class won first place in the class competitions to show
school spirit during the week. Polo had a first ever tie
between senior candidates Jessica Farmer and Adriana Segar
and both were crowned as the Polo 2014 Homecoming Queens
while senior Tristan Rardon was crowned King.
Panthers finish strong over King City 62-28
Polo traveled to King City last Friday night in the drizzling rain to take on the
Wildkats. Unlike the Polo team, the Panthers got off to a sluggish start. At the end
of the first quarter King City had held Polo scoreless while putting 6 on the
scoreboard. Polo’s coaches made some adjustments and the Panthers started to
roll. Sophomore Gunnar Martin ran in the first touchdown for the Panthers with
10:30 left on the clock in the second quarter. Polo ran in for the extra 2 and then
led King City 8-6. With 7:30 left on the clock in the second quarter Polo scored again
with senior quarterback Wiley Martin. With a first and 10 on the scoreboard Martin
ran in the Panthers second touchdown. The PAT was good and Polo now led 16-6.
The Wilkats fought a touch battle, but the Panthers pulled together and tromped
King City at the final horn 62-28. The Polo Panthers are now 7-1 on the season.
The team rushing totals for the Panthers were impressive with 47 carries for 452
yards, 8 touchdowns and 5 pat runs. Wiley Martin had 21 carries for 229 yards, 3
touchdowns and 3 PAT runs, junior Ty Parker had 8 carries for 65 yards, 2
touchdowns and 1 PAT run, senior Jacob Hicks had 8 carries for 55 yards and 2
touchdowns and sophomore Gunnar Martin had 6 carries for 96 yards, 1 touchdown
and 1 PAT run.
Senior Brandon Richardson had 2 catches for 67 yards that boosted the Panthers
offense at just the right times in the game. Ty Parker had 1 catch for a 65 yard carry.
Martin went 3 for 4 on passing with a total of 132 yards gained.
Leading the Panthers defense was Jacob Hicks with 15 tackles and 2 tackles for a
loss, Ty Parker with 14 tackles and 1 tackles for a loss, Gunnar Martin with 12
tackles, 1 tackle for a loss and 2 sacks and senior Brandon Latimer had 11 tackles.
Coach Ross was pleased with his team [Type a quote from the

and looked at the slow start as a learning tool to better his Panther team. After the
game Coach Ross said this, “This was a good wake up call for our team as we try and
secure some home field play-off spots. King City is a very well coached team that is
hungry for success. Consequently, we were down 6 at the end of the first quarter. I
am very blessed to have smart, coachable student athletes, so we are able to get a
grip on what they are doing and use it against them. These lessons are battle scars
that will keep our resolve as we move on each week.”
Max preps District standings now has Polo listed first in District 8 Class 1 and
Penney High School second. Polo will host the University Academy Charter School

Ask Alli…
This month’s questions posed by the inquiring minds
of the student body of Polo R-VII!
ASK ALLIE- Mason Misel

1. Question: What is a fun way to have fun with your friends in
the fall?
There are so many ways that you can have fun with your friends
during the fall! Some free ways to have fun are to have a
bonfire, rake up leaves and play in them, take a walk in the
park enjoying the fall colors, or read a book outside! If you are
willing to spend a little bit of money you could visit a pumpkin
patch, walk through a corn maze, go to a coffee shop and get a
Pumpkin Spice Latte, or if you want to get scared go, to a
haunted house!
2. Question: What do you do to stay positive on a bad day?
For this question I spoke to the high school counselor, Mrs.
Arway, and she said,”On a bad day, I really just try to look at
the positive side of everything. Things may be bad, but there is
always something positive about it. Try to make the best of the
situation, and things are sure to get better.”
3. Question: I love my guy best friend! Should I tell him how I
really feel?
Garrett Jones, a freshman at Polo High School, wanted to weigh
his opinion in on this topic. He said,”If a girl liked me I would
want her to tell me. If she didn’t tell me, I wouldn’t know if she
was interested, so how could I make a move if I felt the same
way.”
4. Question: My best friend and I have been fighting for a few
days, and I want to make things better. Help me?
I have always heard that a fight can make a relationship
stronger if people are willing to work it out. My friends and I
have gotten into LOADS of fights, and we are one of the closest
groups of people I have seen. The key to making things right is
both people having an open mind, willing to make things work
no matter what. Sometimes, being the bigger person and giving
up the fight, and letting them win, will make everything better.
5. Question: What is a good time to start applying to go to
college?
For a senior in high school, the right time to start applying for
college is anytime at the beginning of your senior year. There is
no specific time that you must apply, but the sooner the better.
Sometimes if you apply to a college sooner you can become
eligible for more scholarships. Many colleges suggest that you
apply between August and October.
Polo is seeded first in District 8
Polo welcomed the University Academy last Friday night, October 17, to Shearer
Stadium for their final regular season football game. Polo went into the match-up
against the Gryphons with a 7-1 record while the Class 2 Gryphons were 6-2 on their
season. The Polo High School held senior night before the game began at 6:15 pm.
There were 17 seniors honored. Ten senior football players: Brandon Latimer, Mason
Misel, Tristan Rardon, Paulo Kugelmas, Brandon Richardson, Jacob Hicks, Bailey Heil,
Wiley Martin, Caleb Bolling & Ryan Cooper – Five senior cheerleaders: Danielle Allen,
Adriana Segar, Skylar Howe, Cati Boruch and Mattie Curp and two senior football
managers: Aimee Walker and Jenny Adams. The mothers were presented with
flowers, the football players were presented with helmets painted by the Art class,
the managers received footballs painted by the Art class and the cheerleaders
received gift bags.
Polo scored first with three minutes off the clock in the first quarter. Sophomore
Gunnar Martin capitalized on good front line blocking and ran in for a Panther
touchdown to get the team fired up. Polo scored the extra points. University
Academy answered with a touchdown with 7:39 left on the clock in the first quarter
while the Polo defense denied them the extra points. To close the first quarter Polo
led 16-6 managing to score both of their extra point attempts, while holding the
Academy to one touchdown. Polo went on to score 3 more touchdowns and 4 PAT
runs to beat the Gryphons 38-26 in a highly physical and completive game.
The team stats for the Polo offense were: Rushing - 64 attempts for 381 yards, 5
touchdowns and 4 PAT’s. Senior Wiley Martin had 40 carries for 209 yards, 2
touchdowns and 2 PAT runs. Gunnar Martin had 17 carries for 145 yards, 2
touchdowns and 2 PAT runs. Junior Ty Parker had 8 carries for 28 yards and 1
touchdown and sophomore Jake Leonard had 1 PAT run. Passing – Polo quarterback
Wiley Martin was 2/5 for 29 yards. Senior Caleb Bolling had 1 catch for 15 yards and
senior Brandon Richardson had 1 catch for 14 yards.
Leading in tackles for the Panthers was senior Jacob Hicks with 11, senior Brandon
Latimer with 10 and 1 tackle for a loss, Jake Leonard 9 and senior Ryan Cooper with 6
tackles.
Head Coach Kyle Ross had this to say after the game, “I am extremely proud of the
boy’s effort on Friday night. We had to change a few things offensively in order to try
and help ourselves get healthy, which required people to step up for their team.
Junior Brandon Hubbard did a great job running our offensive sets throughout the
night in his first ever varsity start at QB. Our three backs that we used were very
flexible and attentive in the different positions that they were asked to shift to
throughout the night. Our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage most of the
night against the most athletically talented defensive line that we have seen this
season and that is a great sign as we head towards the post season.
Defensively we played aggressive football all night in order to try and negate
their team speed. UA finished with 55 offensive plays for 254 yards for the night. We
gave up three big plays during the evening that totaled 116 yards and 3 td’s, so for
their other 52 plays our defense limited them to 2.7 yards per play. Which that in
mind we will really focus on the little things and to not relax at all, in order to
eliminate the big play. We will need to continue to try and get healthy and stay
focused as we are in a very challenging district.”
Polo finished their season Co-Conference Champions with Maysville and with a
record of 8-1. Polo is seeded first in the District 8 Playoff games that start on next
Friday, October 24. Polo will host the #8 seeded Braymer Bobcats next Friday night at
Shearer Stadium at 7 PM. Seed #2 is the Penney High Hornets.

Polo Lady Panthers Softball
The Polo Lady Panthers played their Class 1A District 7
games the weekend of October 11th. They finished second out of six
teams playing both the Braymer Lady Bobcats and the Norborne
Lady Pirates. On Saturday, October 11th the Lady Panthers played
eight innings against the Lady Bobcats finishing in the eighth inning
with a score of two to one. The championship game was played on
Sunday, October 12th between the Lady Panthers and the Norborne
Lady Pirates. Seven innings were played with the game ending, Polo
one and Norborne six.
The Lady Panthers made history this season in being the first
softball team to win a conference title. They tied with the Gallatin
Bulldogs in conference both with a record of seven and one. The
overall record for the Lady Panthers was nineteen and six including
all regular season games, two tournaments, and district play.
Coach Ross gave her insight on the season by answering
some questions I thought would interest the fans. I asked Ross, “Did
the season go the way you expected?” Her response was, “Yes and
no, yes we did some things very well. We shared the conference title
with Gallatin which was a goal, but there were some goals that we
did not get accomplished this season.” A big question was, “How
will losing seven seniors change the softball program for next
season?” Ross said, “Practices will be more competitive because
there will be more open spots. My pitching concerns me because we
are losing three solid pitchers. I will have five returners to lead the
team next year.” I also asked, “What are your goals for next
season?” She told me, “I want to finish in the top three of our
conference and finish in the top two at districts.”
I asked all of the seniors what they will miss most about high
school softball. Adriana Segar said, “I will miss the team being a
family and being on the field playing the sport that I love.” Brooke
Jones stated, “I’ll miss the home games where the whole community
comes out and cheers us on.” Sidney Copeland said, “I will miss my
team and our coaches pushing us to do better.” Jessica Farmer said,
“I will miss the home games and the liveliness of the crowd. I will
also miss the football boys coming and supporting us at the home
games.” Cati Boruch said, “I will miss my family and playing the
sport.” Danielle Allen said, “I will miss my team and the energy that
they give off.” Mattie Curp said, “I will miss the people that I have
gotten to play with.”
The Lady Panthers finished their 2014 softball season on
Sunday, October 12th. They played a total of twenty-five games this
season, and they accomplished a big goal with getting the first
conference title for the school. Softball will begin again next year at
the beginning of school with new players and a new team!
Introducing Paulo Kugelmas
By: Jessica Farmer
It is always a huge excitement to hear that there is a new student in a class. Well,
this year, my senior class was fortunate enough to receive the new student. However, this
student isn’t like any regular kid from another school. Paulo Kugelmas is a foreign
exchange student from Brazil!
Paulo is an exceptional student with a great personality and is very amusing, with a
great sense of humor. He fits in perfectly with everyone here at Polo. No one really knew
what to expect from a student coming from outside of America, but we are learning a lot
and adapting quickly.
Paulo came to America to improve his English, meet new people, and experience a
whole new culture. He loves how different it is here compared to his home in Brazil.
America is absolutely nothing like he thought it would be in many ways!
In Brazil, Paulo lived in an urban city area which is a very different lifestyle
compared to here at Polo. A few former Polo students once took Paulo to the “famous”
Tatesville Bottoms and went mudding one weekend for some entertainment and to show
him what a lot of people like to do around here. I asked him what makes Brazil such a great
country and he replied, “I really love the beach and the weather there. I also miss my family
back home too.” In contrast to that, I also asked him what makes America a great country.
Paulo enjoys the different sports here and the food is very different. His favorite food,
along with a lot of other people here, is definitely pizza!
One thing in Missouri that he could really do without is the weather. He mentioned
that it is pretty hot in Brazil but here, we are getting further into the colder months of the
year and Paulo is not used to these temperatures. It is quite amusing to watch Paulo’s
reactions to the colder weather settling in. It may only be 60 degrees some days and he will
have on a heavy winter coat and stand in one spot, shivering!!
Paulo has actually taught all of us a few things that are quite interesting. He has
taken words in English and translated them into Portuguese for us, which can get funny at
times. We have learned different traditions that people have in Brazil and how beautiful it
is where he came from. We need a beach!!
All in all, Paulo coming to Polo, America has been a great experience for everyone.
We get to learn about a whole new culture, teachers get to have a bit of a challenge in
teaching a foreign student, and even the football team gained another great player. We are
very thankful and happy to have Paulo here in Polo!

Varsity Football
Varsity football is doing extremely well this year.
They work together, they act like a family, and they do
what needs to be done. The boys have accomplished a lot
this year by both beating teams that they didn’t beat last
year as beating bigger schools. You should be proud to be a
Polo Panther!
The Gallatin game was a big success for the Polo
Panthers. The score was 52-22. I asked Mason Misel how
he thought the game went. He said, “We played really
good; it was one of our more focused games.” I also asked
him how it felt to win. He said, “It felt good and it was a
good boost to our confidence.” The last question I asked
Mason was, “Even though you won, could you guys have
done something differently?” He said, “Stay on our blocks
longer.”
South Harrison was a good win for the boys too. The
score was 24-14. I interviewed Wiley Martin and Coach
Ross. The first question I asked them was, “How do you
think the game went?” Wiley said, “Really good, really
focused as a team, executed all our jobs and toughed it
out till the end. “ Coach Ross said, “It was really good,
good that nobody lost composure, and stayed in control
the whole game.” The second question I asked them was
how did it feel to win? Wiley said, “Great, because we got
our butts kicked by them last year.” Coach Ross said,
“Good because it’s hard to beat them just because they
are a big school.” The last question I asked them was
about how they could have done things differently. Wiley
said, “Convert on more 3rd downs, and hold them a couple
more drives.” Coach Ross said, “Eliminate the turnovers
we had and have fewer penalties.”
The next game was against Princeton game. That
was also a win for the Panthers, 49-12. I interviewed Ryan
Cooper and Ty Parker. The first question I asked them
was, “How did it feel to win?” Ryan said, “It felt good to
win because it made us 5-0.” Ty said, “It’s always good to
win but there is always room for improvement.” The
second question I asked them was, “How do you think the
game went?” Ryan said. “It went good for us and the JV
got experience playing against a varsity team.” Ty said,
“It’s always a good thing to win but it’s even better that
the JV got some time to play as well.” The last question I
asked them was, “Could you guys have done something
differently? Ryan said, “We could have played harder on
defense to keep them from scoring.” Ty said, “Cut down
on the penalties and cover the pass.”
After the previous wins, the Maysville game was a
devastating loss for the boys. They really had faith to beat
them but things don’t always go as planned. They lost 4030. The first question I asked Wiley Martin, Ryan Cooper,
Mason Misel, and Bailey Heil was, “What do you guys think
you could have done for a different game result?” Wiley
said, “Execute our job on defense and play harder
throughout the game.” Ryan said, “On defense we could
have played harder and been more physical against their
offense.” Bailey said, “We could have played harder and
blocked through the whistle. Scoring on 2 point
conversions could have been done differently.” Mason
said, “Not fight with each other, play together, and score
when it’s needed.” The last question I asked them was,
“What did you gain from this game that you can take to
the next game, to win.” Wiley said, “Be more physical and
be more focused, then we could definitely win.” Ryan
said, “It gave us the taste of losing on our tongue and
made us want to play tougher against the next opponent.”
Bailey said, “We gained the experience of our first team
loss and made us realize we have to be a family, and work
together.” Mason said, “Stay focused all the time and it
gave us a chip on our shoulder. It made our arrogance go
down.”
As you can tell the varsity football season has gone
well. The boys fought for the wins they have acquired this
far. Everyone in the community is proud and we hope to
see them go far this year. We wish the Panthers the best
of luck at districts at the end of the month.

Middle School Softball
Brooke Jones
The middle school softball team went 0-2 for their short
season. They unfortunately had to do some last minute
recruiting due to the lack of players going out for the fall
season. They finally got enough girls to play once school had
started, but they had to cancel quite a few games because of
the lack of practice. Eventually they got to play. Although the
record is misleading, they had a successful season.
I interviewed ool softball was and she replied, “It was a
challenge to teach the 7th graders, in which for some, it was
their first year ever playiShelby Copeland about her last season
as a middle school softball player. I asked her what the biggest
challenge of middle schng. It was fun because I got to hang out
with my friends.” I also asked her what she is going to miss
most about playing middle school softball and she replied,
“Playing with all of her friends.”
I interviewed Maddy Quinn about this middle school
softball season. I asked her what her greatest memory was
about this year and she said, “When I dove for the ball and got
the out.” I asked her what game was her favorite and she
replied, “The 2nd game of the year, against Lexington.” She is
also looking forward to high school ball, for the harder
competition.
Shelby and Maddy will both be upcoming freshman and
they are excited to start playing more games for the sport they
love. They enjoyed the two years for middle school, but now
they are ready to buckle down and get ready for the next four
yearsHigh
of high
school
ball.

Seasonal Driving Safety Tips
Winter is not easy to drive in, especially for those who
don’t have four wheel drive vehicles. This winter is supposed
to be harsh so I’ve asked around for some winter driving
advice.
I asked Jorgia Cory what she thought is the most
important thing to be aware of when driving in the winter.
Her answer was, “Definitely be aware of ice because driving
when there is ice on the road can be very dangerous.”
Another tip was from Brooke Jones. I asked her what
someone should do if they get stuck in the snow while
driving. Her answer was, “Put it in four wheel drive and see if
you can get out. If not, then make phone calls but make sure
you keep calm.”
Brandon Richardson also gave some tips on driving
when it’s really icy out. He said, “Never slam on your brakes,
don’t drive crazy, and be smart!”
The last person I asked was Jessica Farmer. I asked her
what precautions people should take advantage of. She said
you should keep certain items with you when you’re driving in
harsh conditions. She said, “You should maybe keep kitty
litter, coveralls, hoodies, boots, just about anything to keep
warm and make sure you have a way to contact someone for
help if you need it.”
All these tips could be very helpful for anyone who
isn’t experienced with driving in harsh winter conditions. To
anyone who does plan on driving, be careful and drive safe!
11th Annual Halloween Carnival
The 11th Annual Halloween Carnival is October 25th
starting at 6 PM and ending at 9 PM. It is located at the
Community Building South of Polo, in Stage Coach Park.
Everyone is welcome to bring their friends and family out to
enjoy the festivities and games.
The activities and games include: Cake Walk, Big Kid
Basketball, Two story Blow-Up Slide, Bounce House, Angry
Bird game, Dracula football throw, Frankenstein Plinko, Ping
Pong Pit, Dart Throwing, Pluck-a-Duck, Face Painting that is
provided by Lorie Fickess and the Art Club students, Little
Kids Basketball, Witch Golfing, Spider Can Toss, Ring the
Ghost, Treasure Hunt Skeeball, and Straws in the Straw. This
year the PWCO has added a Haunted Hayride that is weather
permitting. Also, there is a full concession stand available
with pretzels, hotdogs, nachos, popcorn, hamburgers, drinks
and candy.
Mason Misel has been working the Halloween Carnival
for 5 years. His favorite part of the Carnival is working the
haunted house. ‘’I can’t wait to see everyone all dressed up
and how everything turns out his year!’’
Gracie Arth has only been once to the Annual
Halloween Carnival and she loved it! Her favorite game was
the skee ball, and winning all the cool prizes. This year she
wants to dress up as a cowgirl.
So come on out on Saturday, October 25th, dresses up
in all your Halloween costumes. Everyone is welcome, hope
to see everyone there!
Halloween Then and Now: Aerial Eggers
Halloween is on October 31st because of the Feast
of All Saints or “All Hallows.” All Hallows is a festival
that the ancient Celts of Ireland and Britain celebrated.
Our traditions now are dressing up and “trick or
treating.” Trick or Treating and dressing up in costumes
were first done by the Druids to keep themselves safe
from evil spirits. “I’ve been to a lot of spook trails and
haunted houses and that’s what I look forward to every
year”, says Danielle Gurwell.

Polo defeats Braymer in 1st round of District 8 Playoffs 52-6
Polo hosted the #8 seeded Braymer Bobcats last Friday night at
Shearer Stadium in week 10 of the 2014 football season and first
game of the District 8 playoff games. The #1 seeded Polo Panthers
played focused against the Bobcats. Polo walked off with a 52-6
win over the Bobcats.

16 yards and 1 touchdown. Passing Junior Brandon Hubbard was
2/5 for 17 yards and receiving, senior Brandon Richardson had 1

fumble recovery for a touchdown and junior Ty Parker, senior Caleb
Bolling, Brandon Richardson,, and Brandon Hubbard each had 1
interception.
Head Coach Kyle Ross was pleased with the team contribution to
the win and had this to say after the game, “ This was a great
overall team effort to take control of this game from the very
beginning. That was our goal and we executed at an extremely high
level on both sides of the ball. In order to give ourselves a chance
to advance further we will have to continue to elevate our total
commitment to each and every snap of the ball. I like were our
focus is and look forward to a great game from an outstanding
opponent this Friday night.” The Polo team record is now 9-1.
Polo will face the Gallatin Bulldogs, who they beat earlier in the
season, for round 2 of the District 8 Playoffs on Friday, October 31,
at Shearer Stadium in Polo, at 7 PM.
