It
is April 3rd, 1955. A Noreaster is
pounding Massachusetts. The wind
howls yet not much snow falls. In
central New England about 30 inches falls,
and in the Berkshires they also get pounded.
But here, only a few inches. Power lines and
communication lines (telegraph) were down
all over New England. Route 2, the Mohawk
Trail, is also closed.
The main concern of the pilot was the
wind. He was flying above the storm, trying
to use radio location to find out his exact
position. Back in the day, planes could only
be identified on radar by the radar operator
asking the pilot to fly a particular maneuver.
When the corresponding dot on his radar
screen did the same thing, well then he knew
which plane he was talking to. He would have
used his nav radio, but that had gone out.
What an unlucky day.
He had a rough idea where he was.
Somewhere around Quabbin. This was not a
good thing, as the radio op had him doing ID
turns at 1000 feet. The hills in the Quabbin

area rise to about 1300 feet. You do the
math. He did the math, and he didn’t like
the answer. Late afternoon was coming
around and he only had 20 gallons of fuel
left. That equated to about 2 minutes of
flying time before flame-out, and the radar
op still couldn’t confirm which plane was
his. Situation? Not good!
He thought he would slow the plane
down by lowering the landing gear and the
flaps. Check. A few seconds later the plane
started to shake. Again, not good. The plane
was losing lift, he’s running out of fuel. The
pilot releases the canopy, pulls the eject
handle, and is unceremoniously spat out
into the cold, cloudy, snowy, wind-whipped

atmosphere. He waits for it...he knows he’s
around Quabbin. For sure he will be landing
on the thinning Quabbin icepack. Instead,
he hears his plane crash into something.
The ice, most likely. Then, solid ground. He
made it! He later learned that he landed on
Prescott Peninsula. What happened to his
plane, he did not know. Subsequent searches
turned up nothing, and it was assumed it had
sunk into the very deep waters of Quabbin
Reservoir.
45 Years later he stands there in his
leather jacket, caterpiller pin (denoting an
ejection), and looks at the wreckage. It had
been found in the woods by loggers many
years ago but nobody knew exactly what it
was or where it came from. He did. It was his
plane. He stood there and touched it, reliving
the experience. The plane’s mostly aluminum
body did not have much in the way of rust on
it, but the impact had shredded the thing like
cheese through a grater. A deep hole marked
the impact site.
While he was standing there, a ranger
which they had previously run into and
exchanged information with, came up with
a pilot’s helmet. It had been found on an
island in the 60s’. He looks at it, but is not
his. Apparently someone else’s plane had
met the same fate. (I have not been able to
turn up any records whatsoever of a crash,
apparently they want to keep it hush-hush).
This was a nice bit of closure for him.

the 50th anniversary of the crash. He had
planned to visit again, but he was called

Player. Born in Ware,
Massachusetts on
October 18, 1848, he
was a right handed
pitcher nicknamed
‘Candy’, noted as
the pioneer first to
throw a curveball.
On April 22, 1872, he made his debut with
the New York Mutuals and also played
as an outfielder. For seven seasons; he
played for the New York Mutuals in 1872,
Baltimore Canaries in 1873, Philadelphia
White Stockings in 1874, Hartford Dark
Blues (1875-76) and Cincinnati Reds in
1877. Among his records, he was the first
pitcher to record two complete games in
one day and became the first President
of the new International Association for
Professional Baseball Players. As a player,
he ended his career with 145wins, 94
losses, 233 complete games, 19 shutouts,
259 strikeouts and a 2.42 earned run
average. He died at age 75 in Toledo, Ohio
and was elected into the Baseball Hall of
Fame by the Veteran’s Committee in 1939.
He is buried in Aspen Grove Cemetary,

U.S. baseball manager and team
executive, Connie Mack, was born
December 22, 1862, in East Brookfield,
Massachusetts. He played professional
baseball from 1886-’96, before becoming
manager of the Milwaukee Brewers and
part owner of the Philadelphia Athletics.
He later became the sole owner of the
Athletics from 1937-’53. Mack’s teams
won 3,776 games and lost 4,025, both alltime records. He also helped establish the
American League.
Lucy Stone 1818-1893

In 1839, Stone attended
Mount Holyoke Seminary
for just one term. Four
years later, she enrolled at
Oberlin College in Ohio.
While Oberlin touted itself as a progressive
institution, the school did not offer a level
playing field for women. As a result, the
college denied Stone the opportunity to
pursue her passion in public speaking.
Undeterred, Stone, who paid her way
through school, graduated in 1847 with
honors, becoming the first woman from
Massachusetts to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Under the direction of William Lloyd
Garrison, whom she’d met while at Oberlin,
Stone soon found work with the American
Anti-Slavery Society. Her work with the
organization tapped into her continued

and heightened passion to eradicate
slavery. It also launched her career as a
public speaker.
While she was regularly heckled
by opponents (she was even excommunicated by the Congregational
Church, the religion of her parents), Stone
emerged as an outspoken voice in the antislavery movement and the women’s rights
cause.
In 1850, the pioneering Stone
convened the first national Women’s
Rights Convention. Held in Worcester,
Massachusetts, the event was hailed as a
significant moment for American women,
and Stone was a celebrated leader. Her
speech at the convention was reprinted in
newspapers nationwide.
For the next few years, Stone, who
was paid well for her speeches, kept up a
relentless schedule, traveling throughout
North America to lecture about women’s
rights while continuing to hold her annual
convention.
Later, Stone worked extensively on
suffrage issues in Kansas and became
president of the New Jersey Woman
Suffrage Association, which would later be
succeeded by the League of Women Voters
of New Jersey in 1920. She also launched
a New England chapter of the National
Woman Suffrage Association and, in 1866,
helped found the American Equal Rights
Association.
Elias Howe, Jr.
Spencer, MA
Elias Howe, born July 9, 1819 in Spencer,
MA was an American inventor who won
the first patents for a sewing machine
in 1846. A tinkerer since his early youth,
Howe worked his father’s sawmill until he
was about 16, when he found work as at a
cotton mill in Lowell, Massachusetts. Two

years later, in 1837, he
moved to Cambridge,
where he started to make
a living fixing machines.
In his off hours — and
when he wasn’t sick in
bed — Howe worked
on improving the
design of what then
passed for sewing
machines. By 1845 he had built two
working machines, one for the patent
office and one for exhibitions. Awarded a
patent in 1846, Howe sought investors to
begin manufacturing the machines, but
had no luck. He and his brother, Amasa,
approached English investors, and ended
up selling part of his patents for a small
sum and staying in England to work. After
struggling financially, Howe returned to the
U.S. in 1847 to discover sewing machines
being manufactured and his patents
being infringed. After nearly five years,
Howe triumphed in court in 1854 and the
royalties he made from others — most
notably Isaac Merritt Singer — made him
a wealthy man at last. Howe received
royalties until 1867, when his patents
expired, and he died that same year, at the
age of 48.
Extra credit
During the Civil War, Howe used
his wealth to outfit a regiment from
Connecticut, and then enlisted as a private
(he served as a postmaster’s assistant and
never saw combat).

Directions to Brimfield
From North: Travel south on 1-91 to Mass Pike
Entrance. Take the Mass Pike East to Exit 8 (Palmer).
Turn right after the toll booth and left at the first light
onto Route 20 East. Continue east about 8 miles to
the shows.
From South: Travel north on 1-91, to 291 East, to
Mass Pike entrance (Exit 6). Take the Mass Pike East
to Exit 8 (Palmer). Turn right after the toll booth and
left at the first light onto Route 20 East. Continue east
about 8 miles to the shows. Or you may consider 1-84
to Sturbridge, then Route 20 West (about 7 miles) to
Brimfield.
From East and North: Take 495 south to the Mass
Pike. Take the Mass Pike west to Exit 9 (Sturbridge).
Turn right after the toll booth onto Route 20 West.
Continue west about 7 miles to the shows.
To avoid traffic tie-ups at Mass Pike exits 8 and 9, you
may exit sooner and take Route 19 or Route 32 from
southerly directions, or consider Routes 32 or 67 from
the north.
Cash: The Country Bank has an ATM in Brimfield
which is located at May’s Antiques and Main Street.
There are also several others located about 10 miles
away, in the towns of Sturbridge, Monson, Palmer
and Warren. Also, several of the field operators have
ATMs located on their property.
Admission: Some shows charge admission, the fee
is around $5.
Pets: It’s not a good idea to bring pets. Many
operators prohibit pets on their fields and it’s
hazardous to keep animals in cars.
Parking: There is plenty of off street parking available at costs ranging from $3.00 – $10.00. Parking
is prohibited on the roadside and tow trucks do
patrol the area, so park with caution.
Food: There are plenty of food vendors located
on all of the fields offering a variety of food items.
There are also a few local restaurants in town
where you can sit and enjoy dining.
Restrooms: Portable toilets are set up on all fields.
Weather: The weather in New England is very
unpredictable. The shows run rain or shine so come
prepared.

The Brimfield shows run three times a year
May, July and Sept. and are open for a six day
period, Tuesday through Sunday. Some operators
open all days and others are open for a few days
during this period.

Quabbin Reservoir one of New England’s natural wonders
T
he early 1900’s were a peaceful
and prosperous time for most
residents of the Quaboag
Hills. Farms were bountiful,
villages were bustling, and local mills
were turning our textiles, wire and other
products.
But a crisis was brewing to the east.
Boston had outgrown its water supply
and began to look thirstily at the pristine
waters of the Swift River Valley, 65 miles
away in the Quaboag Hiolls.
State officials planned a massive dam
project – one of the country’s largest at
the time – to flood the valley and create a
reservoir of titanic proportions. Trouble
was, four innocent towns stood in the
way.

In the spring of 1938, the rattle of
heavy equipment resounded through the
communities of Dana, Enfield, Prescott,
and Greenwich. Although residents for
years saw the handwriting on the wall,
few were prepared for the shock of seeing
their homes bulldozed, their farmsteads
burned, and their cemeteries disinterred.
The state paid for the land, but at Great
Depression prices.
On April 27, 1938, the valley’s
residents gathered one last time for a
Farewell Ball. A thousand neighbors
jammed Enfield Town Hall while even
more stood outside. At midnight, the
people wept as they danced to the
poignant strains of “Auld Lang Syne.”
Today’s Quabbin Reservoir
Despite its painful beginning, the
Quabbin Reservoir is one of New England’s
natural wonders and one of the gems of
the Quaboag Hills. With rolling hillsides
plunging dramatically into a vast expanse
of blue water, the area is breathtaking and
inspirational for artists, photographers,
sightseers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The Quabbin has been called the
‘accidental wilderness,’ and for good reason.
Surrounding the 29 square-mile reservoir
is a 56,000-acre wildlife reservation. Where
there was once civilization, the Quabbin
now is home to countless wildflowers,
trees, birds, deer, fox, bobcat, beaver,
coyote, moose and even (according to
legend) a mountain lion.
Because the reservoir is the main
water supply for 25 million Greater Boston
residents, visitor activities are carefully
regulated – no fires, swimming, or pets
for instance. However, an estimated halfmillion people visit Quabbin Park and
Reservation each year for hiking, cycling,
fishing, picnicking, and quiet solitude.
Make your fist stop the Quabbin
Visitors Center (off Route 9 between
Belchertown and Ware) where you’ll find
fascinating exhibits of the reservoir, the
100 mile aqueduct and pipeline to Boston,
a historical video presentation, plus

photos and artifacts chronicling the valley’s
history. Pick up free brochures (especially
the park’s regulations) before you set off; a
variety of trail maps and books are on sale
as well.
If you’re inclined to foot-powered
exploration, purchase a copy of “Historic
Quabbin Hikes” by J. R. Greene, which
provides step-by-step directions to ruins
of the Quabbin’s “lost towns.” Abandoned
cellar holes, sidewalks, stone walls,
roadways – even remains of the entire Dana
town common – are still visible to those
with the energy to hike a mile or more into
the wilderness.
Less intrepid explorers should visit
Quabbin Park Cemetery, where more than
7,500 bodies from the “lost towns” were
reinterred after the flood, and drive scenic
roadways providing some of the finest
sightseeing in Massachusetts. Fishing is
fantastic on the Quabbin (license required).
There are boat rentals at three boat launch
areas. The free-flowing Swift River below
Winsor Dam is among New England’s
premier fly-fishing waters.
One of the Quabbin’s most popular
attractions are its bald eagles, which are
often spotted soaring above the shorelines.
Quabbin Summit Tower (cover) and Enfield
Lookout are the best vantage points.
Though winter seems to be best, eagles
can be sighted year-round. Don’t forget
binoculars and a camera, and keep an eye

FORGOTTEN GRAVE
Quabbin’s
Forgotten Grave
W
hen Quabbin Reservoir was being constructed
in the late 1920’s through the 1930’s, every
grave that fell within the massive reservoir and
the surrounding reservation had to be moved prior to the
flooding of the Swift River Valley. Approximately 7,500 dead
were excavated and reinterred outside the reservation, most
in the newly built Quabbin Park Cemetery. Although some
families wanted their loved ones gravesites to remain
where they were, no exceptions were allowed
by the Metropolitan District Water
Supply Commission which
supervised the process.
Before moving a body,
authorities first photographed
each lot in the cemetery
and all available data was
recorded. Families holding
deeds were notified, and they
in turn selected a location in
the new cemetery. Assistant
Engineer William Potter was
in charge of the removal of the
bodies and was assisted by
undertaker Clifton Moore, a
native of Enfield who gave up
his business to help coordinate
the project. Having a local
undertaker supervising this
process must have allayed the
fears of valley residents that
the remains of their loved ones
would be handled with respect
and theft of items would occur.

The Union News reported that when a lot
was transferred, “the stones or monuments are
first removed and set on solid foundations in
the new location: then the laborers removed
the earth carefully from the grave until the
body is reached. The undertaker then removed
the body, the remains being placed in covered
wooded boxes. Any article of jewelry or the
like, found in graves, is recorded and buried
with the one to whom it belongs. The bodies
are carried in a hearse kept for that purpose
only.” Many of the old graves were unmarked,
and more than 500 nameless bodies were
removed, some from “potter’s fields”.
For the last 70 years, the Metropolitan
District Commission, which now oversees the
Quabbin, believed that every grave within the
reservation had been moved. But deep in the
woods, less than a mile from the reservoir’s
shoreline, there is a gravestone on a lonely
ridge.
The stone says: Wendell, son of John H.
& Sarah E. Farnsworth, Died April 3, 1851,
Aged 6 years and 8 months
The hiker who found Wendell’s tombstone
surmised that the reason the grave was
overlooked was because it was not in a
cemetery. “If no one bothered to tell the
Commission,” said the hiker, “about Wendell’s
grave, whey would have no way of knowing it
was there. Perhaps, when the Quabbin was
being built there was no immediate family of
Wendell’s still alive in the area.”
Efforts to learn more about Wendell have
so far been unsuccessful. Elizabeth Pierce,
President of the Swift River Valley Historical
Society reported that the town’s vital records
where Wendell lived made no mention of
the Farnsworths in the mid-1800’s. The
Metropolitan District Commission also keeps
historical records about the lost towns, but

again there were no documents helpful in the
search to understand more about Wendell.
And we should use our imagination, picturing
Wendell running along the hill behind his
farm with wonder in his eyes for this beautiful
countryside. At least-after almost a hundred
and fifty years of Wendell being forgotten-he is
remembered once again.

Indians and became known as the Haymakers. It
is also the resting place for Jedediah Foster, his
wife and daughter, and the Honorable Diederick
Leertouwer. This cemetery was used from 1710

A massive, cave-like rock shelter, exposed after
the glacial retreat 10,000 years ago, served
as a winter camp for Native Americans. By mid
1800’s, it was part of a farm owned by William
Adams whose descendant, F. A. Carter, dammed
a small stream to create Carter Pond and built
the cottage now serving as a trailside museum
and nature center. Open year round, daily, sunrise
to sunset. Admission is free to all.

Whitefield Rock

On the sixteenth of October in the year 1740 the
touring evangelist preacher Reverend George
Whitefield gave one of his rousing sermons from
a large rock upon Foster Hill to at least four to
five hundred people. Considering that this pasture
was located in the heart of a still thinly settled
region, this eighteenth century gathering must
indeed have been a notable event.

he Old Boston Post Road
is Quaboag Plantation’s
link with the past. It
originated several hundred years
ago as an Indian path. As time
passed the path became a trail and the trail
became a road over which settlers, militia,
horses and wagons, stages coaches, in fact all
the traffic of the new world traveled. For many
years it was the only northern connection
between Boston and New York.
In 1639 the first general highway
act was passed and the road
was established as a permanent
thoroughfare. In 1717 improvements
were made to the road, the value of which was
demonstrated in 1775 by the haste with which
the Minute Men responded to the alarm at
Lexington.Among the notable mementoes of
the Post Road are the Connecticut sandstone

milestones, some of which are to be found
today. The location of the markers was
determined by Benjamin Franklin in 1763
who at that time was Assistant Postmaster
General of the United States. He attached an
ingenious device to the wheel
of his chaise which counted
the revolutions of the wheel
and thus indicated each mile
traveled. The spot was then
marked by a stick driven
into the ground. A crew of
men followed and erected
markers, each one inscribed
appropriately for its location.
At this time the distance
from Boston to New York was
two hundred fifty four miles.

milestones, dating from 1767, can be found in
the towns of Brookfield, East Brookfield, West
Brookfield, Warren and Spencer.
Many are visible from the road. Others
are on private property (please be respectful).

Uniquely Quabbin Magazine kick-off FREE - The Ware
Center Meeting House and Museum will be open May 19
through 22 in an exciting event to promote collaboration
among Quabbin-area museums and historical societies
in twenty Quabbin-area towns. North Quabbin towns are

Athol, Erving, New Salem, Orange, Petersham, Phillipston,
Royalston, Warwick, and Wendell. South Quabbin towns are
Barre, Belchertown, Hardwick (Gilbertville), Hubbardston,
Leverett, New Braintree, Oakham, Pelham, Rutland,
Shutesbury, and Ware. Each venue will schedule open
houses and/or events between Thursday, May 19 and
Sunday, May 22. This coordinates with the first edition of
Uniquely Quabbin, a magazine promoting the North and
South Quabbin to be distributed free of charge throughout
the Quabbin area, the Commonwealth, and New England.
Collaborators are Athol Historical Society, North Quabbin
Chamber of Commerce, Athol Press, and Haley’s Publishing
of Athol. Marcia Gagliardi is editor and publisher of Uniquely
Quabbin. Funding is from the International Music and Art

Wool Days - The sheep get their yearly “haircuts” this
weekend. Farmers shear the sheep, and costumed
historians demonstrate the entire wool textile process, from
scouring and carding the wool to spinning, and then knitting

hand-carding the wool. Join us in knitting (or crocheting)
scarves for deployed soldiers. Help to add a few rows to

Enfield Bi-Centennial Observance - In honor of what wouldhave-been the 200th anniversary of the founding of the
town of Enfield, an Enfield Bi-Centennial Observance Day will
be held at Hanks Picnic Area, in Quabbin Park. The event is
being coordinated by the DCR, Swift River Valley Historical
Society, Friends of Quabbin and the Ware Historical Society,
and will be a fun, family oriented day of historical displays,
costumed re-enactors, a period baseball game, music,

The Monson Arts Council 38th Annual Craft Fair - The 38th
Annual Craft Fair will have over 80 vendors in a dazzling
variety of media. The Monson Arts Council booth, located
in the Memorial Hall Building, will have printed copies of
a new Craft Fair Building Map which assisted visitors in
finding each of the five buildings. The Craft Fair is a tradition
for many to start their holiday shopping. The traditional
Christmas lighting will take place in front of Memorial Hall
starting at 4 PM followed by the arrival of Santa on top of a
fire truck for the official Lighting Ceremony, which results in
turning on all of the Town’s Main Street Christmas lightning.
A large crowd and many children enjoy this ceremony. After
the lighting, parents and children follow Santa to the fire
