Halloween Adventures: Part Two Hart District Elections
Los Angeles Haunted Hayride and The Sinner’s Soiree
Fast Approaching
by Michelle Sandoval
As I headed into the middle of the month, creeping my way closer to Halloween, my
haunted adventures continued with two more great attractions that are guaranteed to
spook even the bravest of souls. One is a Los Angeles classic that will take you deep into
the depths of Griffith Park, and another is a new haunt that will have you sipping cocktails
with the devil himself. So, leave your fear at the door and embrace all the spooky celebrations happening in Southern California this year – they are some of the best yet.
Los Angeles Haunted Hayride
Now in its 7th season, there’s a very good reason why the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride is
one of L.A.’s most popular Halloween attractions. Quite simply, the folks behind the
horrifying haunt, Ten Thirty One Productions, live and breathe horror all year round.
Whether they’re hosting an outdoor screening of a popular scary movie, or giving fans a
truly frightening camping experience with their Great Horror Campout, the talented
group, led by Melissa Carbone, knows how to do horror right.
This year’s hayride centers around a classic nightmarish villain - the Boogeyman. Their all
new attraction will once again take you through the abandoned zoo that once called
Griffith Park home, a lonely and desolate place all year round. Promising that the now
25-minute hayride will be bigger and better than ever, you and a group will be herded into
a tight, fenced-in area before jumping into your transportation for the evening, a
hay-padded tractor trailer. A new spin to this year’s ride is a dark curtain that closes the
group off from the outside world. The fear of not knowing what is happening outside
invokes real fear; this is when people huddled together the closest.

The November elections for the William S. Hart Union High
School District are quickly approaching, with polling places
recently announced.
Residents who live in parts of northern Valencia, Castaic and
Val Verde can vote for the district’s Trustee Area 1, where
Linda Storli is running against incumbent Gloria
Mercado-Fortine. Residents of Canyon Country can vote for
Trustee Area 4, where Andrew Taban is running against
incumbent Steve Sturgeon.

The Gazette
Halloween
continued from front page
I was so scared that I closed my eyes every time the
curtain went up, which makes no sense, since we
were in pitch black darkness already.
The Boogeyman is this year’s theme, and since the
term can be interpreted several ways, the Haunted
Hayride team used it with a loose definition, introducing us to several “Boogeymen” along the way.
You’ll encounter anything from ghostly children
to blood-thirsty socialites, and from famous serial
killers to dozens of nightmarish demons that are
sure to haunt your dreams. As always, the props and
backdrops are exceptional, the talent is horrifying,
the costumes and makeup are phenomenal, all of
this making for a truly terrifyingly fun experience.
If you’re brave enough, open your eyes long enough
to look at the path behind you as you leave each
frightening scene. The monsters slowly following
your trailer, eerily bidding you farewell will chill you
to the bone.
A fun addition this year are the Trick or Treat tents,
which will wash away the fond memories you have
of going door to door collecting candy as a child.
Knock on the door of about a dozen houses in this
scary adventure, but don’t expect to get any chocolate. Teeth and vodka, however, are some of the more
pleasant options, mostly you’ll be run off the porch
by all sorts of maniacs, making for a very different
trick or treating memory.
The “In Between Dark Maze” is back this year,
and just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse...
it does. I always try to opt out of this one, because
it scared me so much a couple of years back, but I
always end up getting coerced. This maze, which
you go through in the dark (they usually give you
lanterns, which the Hayride team decided not to do
this year - NOT COOL) makes you creep and feel
your way around an area that is almost impossible
to navigate. This year you have to don clown masks
(again, NOT COOL), and once inside, during the
rare flash of light, you will encounter evil maniac
clowns lurking around. To make matters worse, you
never know who is actually out to scare you, since
everyone is wearing masks! This particular maze is
easily one of the scariest you will find in Los Angeles
and one of the only ones that I can say honestly and
legitimately scares me.
Before you make your way home, check out the
Theatre Macabre, a hilarious show in the middle
of Purgatory, the Hayride’s Haunted Village. The
talented hosts will invite members of the audience up
on stage to recreate classic scenes from horror movies. It is a nice change of pace from all the panic and
terror around you.
The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride makes one thing
clear this year -- he may come in many shapes and
sizes, differ from country to country and has existed
in many forms through the ages. But, one thing is
certain – the Boogeyman is real, and he is very much
alive in Griffith Park this Halloween.
The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride runs through Oct.
31 at Griffith Park, located at 4730 Crystal Springs
Ave in Los Angeles. For tickets and information, visit
www.losangeleshauntedhayride.com.
The Sinner’s Soiree
“I like you, I’ll take you last,” said the Drunken Devil as he menacingly walked away from me, sipping
his cocktail. Marketed as a haunted house extraordinaire, “The Sinner’s Soiree” is making its debut this
year at the Think Tank Gallery in Downtown Los
Angeles. Presented by Drunken Devil Productions,
expect to dwell deep in the devil’s domain, an underworld filled with spirits and “spirits.” You might even
find yourself at home in the Underworld, because
once you’re there drinking with the devil, an eternity
of damnation might not sound like such a bad thing
after all.
It cannot be denied that “The Sinner’s Soiree” makes
for a fun evening of drunken debauchery. Set in a
Mardi Gras inspired lounge, guests can drink the
night away as they mingle with a group of hellish
minions in the Devil’s Den. You will encounter
ghoulish burlesque dancers, maniac magicians and,
of course, Satan himself. Guests can have the option
to purchase VIP passes, which will give them special
seating in the lounge and free drink tastings. We were
treated to select beer and wine choices and a delectable coffee infused whiskey that alone was worth the
trip. For an attraction that thrives off of sin and vice,
there were definitely enough devilish enticements to
stimulate all of my senses.
For those of you looking for a night of wicked
indulgence, “The Sinner’s Soiree” will satisfy all of
your sinister wishes. Unfortunately, for those of you
looking for scares and frights, you will most likely
find the maze lackluster, with a basic, simple design,
scarce props and sets, and a small group of actors
who rely entirely on cheap scares to make you jump.
Small groups will be led through the maze, which is
supposed to be your descent into hell, but once inside
you’ll find it is neither hellish nor terrifying. In fact,
you’ll most likely find yourself rushing through to
get back to the cocktail party, which is where the real
fun is.

Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival Returning to
Newhall Due to Filming at Melody Ranch
by Melissa Lampert
The 2016 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival is set to
return to Newhall for the second year in a row
due to filming scheduled at Melody Ranch Picture
Motion Studio, event officials announced.
While the most recent event held earlier this year
was the first time in the event’s 22-year history
the festival wasn’t held at Melody Ranch, the
venue change actually resulted in an increase in
attendance, according to Phil Lantis, the city’s arts
and events administrator.
“Last year we did surveying after the event and
also heard from our patrons throughout the
event,” Lantis said, “and while I would say there
was definitely some disappointment about it not
being at Melody Ranch, once people understood
what the challenges were up there and that there
was a main production (filming) everyone seemed
to understand.”
In fact, the venue change allowed event officials
to expand the festival from its primary location at
William S. Hart Park to Old Town Newhall, where
related performances took place at the Canyon
Theatre Guild, the Repertory East Playhouse and
several other locations.
As a result, the number of people who attended
the 2015 festival in Newhall was actually slightly
higher than the year before at Melody Ranch,
Lantis said.
Approximately 12,000 people attended the
main festival at Melody Ranch and the related
Thursdays@Newhall SENSES event in 2014.
The most recent festival drew more than 13,500
people total between the main festival at Hart Park
and the associated events and performances held
in Old Town Newhall.
“We got some really positive responses to the new
location, so we’re very happy with it,” Lantis said.
“Hart Park and Old Town Newhall gives us a little
more room to try some new things. We expanded
our activities last year and we’re hoping to even
more this year.”
In addition to an expanded selection of events
and performances, the venue change also provides
attendees with the comfort of shaded areas at the
main festival at Hart Park while also helping draw
those visiting Santa Clarita from out of town to
nearby restaurants and businesses in Old Town
Newhall.
“It’s not easy to leave the ranch to go grab dinner
or lunch,” Lantis said. “It’s nice to be able to
bring the folks that are coming to town to visit the
event into Old Town Newhall and show them that
wonderful part of the community.”
However, the annual
festival’s move to Newhall
is not permanent at this
time, Lantis said, and the
location will continue to
be determined “year by
year, depending on what’s
happening at the ranch.”

Cowboy Festival is set

21 and continue through

That being said, I have to mention the great makeup and
costumes worn by the actors – they were extremely well
done. These beautiful, monstrous creations almost make
you forget that making a lot of noise and jumping out at
people from your hiding place in the dark, does not make
for a successful haunt... almost.
Every haunted attraction has its strengths and weaknesses.
What “The Sinner’s Soiree” lacks in professional haunt
creation, scares and originality, it more than makes up for
with their nightly cocktail party. I recommend “The Sinner’s Soiree” for a night of booze-fueled fun surrounded
by other horror fans. You won’t get many chances to say
you drank with the devil in a boozy underworld in the chic
fashion district of Los Angeles. Bragging rights to that
make this attraction more than worth your while.
“The Sinner’s Soiree” runs through Nov. 1 at the Think
Tank Gallery, located at 939 S. Maple Ave, in Los Angeles.

dressing up as a cat because I got a cat costume for my dance performance. It
cost $80 (I think) and my mom had to pay for it. She told me I was going to
wear it for Halloween. I’m not complaining, because the costume is very cute.
I am going to go trick-or-treating with my friends, Rachel, Sophia, Reese,

SCV to ‘Fall Back’ an Hour
for Daylight Saving
by Heather Harbin
Santa Clarita residents should get ready to “fall back” an hour this weekend
when daylight saving officially ends on Sunday.
Clocks will be falling back an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, meaning
brighter mornings with darker evenings for most Americans.
The time shown on the clock from November to March is known as
“standard time” in the Northern Hemisphere, according to a CNN article.
The rest of the year is considered the exception, or “saving time.”
Places such as Hawaii and most of Arizona are just a few who don’t
participate in this annual change. Daylight saving is observed in dozens of
other countries as well.

OPINION
Lean to the Left
A Kennedy Who’s ‘Going Davis’
By Sylvia Turner
When I heard the story about the
high school football coach in Washington State being told to cease his
after-game prayers, I thought, “Here
we go again.” Now we’ll get all the
political opportunists to weigh in
and use it for or against their causes.
It’s even funnier that the Bremerton High School coach has the last
name “Kennedy.”
I can offer a few thoughts about the
perspective from the Left, though
the familiarity of the arguments
makes me wonder why we haven’t
advanced the ball down the field at
all (pun intended, of course).
Because Joe Kennedy would not
stop standing in the center of the
football field and praying following high school games, his job was
put on the line. He was told in a
letter that “further violations will
be grounds for discipline, up to and
including discharge from District
employment.”
One has to consider the school
district officials. Do they really have
a choice? Of course not.
Though Coach Joe hasn’t been forcing students to join him, he’s gone
to the center of the field after games,
which is rather public, so it looks
like a statement. Plus, it does create
undue pressure on individuals to
join him or be seen not joining him.
The school district is offering Kennedy a private room, even the press
box, to remove the act from public
scrutiny.
Unfortunately, Coach Joe is “going
Davis.” You know, Kentucky clerk
Kim Davis who refused to issue
marriage licenses to gay couples.
Yup – Coach Joe has lawyered up.
And I don’t understand why his attorney, Hiram Sasser, said, “They’ve
already punished Coach Joe by
denying his request for religious accommodation.”
No, they didn’t, Mr. Sasser. The
district will even let him pray in the
press box! That sounds like a privilege, to me.
Anyway, aside from this specific
situation, the recurring point is: Be
careful what you wish for, you on
the Right. Will you defend a Muslim coach who drops his prayer rug
in the center of the field and bows
repeatedly to the East in public
view? What about a Satanist whose
ritual is to plant an upside down
cross every week? You don’t want to
go there.
So, number one: if you think there’s
no “pressure” applied to the kids
(who just may want to be on the
starting lineup, by the way), you’re
fooling yourself.
Number two: the district has no
choice but to keep church and state
far apart. And a government employed high school football coach,
immediately following a game, is
absolutely still on the clock.
And number three: Has the Christian coach been briefed by his
attorney about that pesky verse in
the book of Matthew, chapter 6,
about praying in public? (Hint: Jesus
looked down on it.)
The Bible’s alternative looks a lot
like the school district’s: “Go into
your inner room, close your door…”
Is a press box private enough?

A Geopolitical
Game of Cat
and Mouse
By Robert Patrick Lewis
I’ve always been a sucker for the
underdog. I rooted for Rudy in his
movie. I cheered for the roadrunner
as he sped past Wile E. Coyote.
And, of course, I always held my
breath for Jerry in the “Tom & Jerry”
cartoons as a kid.
But, there is a much larger
geopolitical game of cat & mouse
going on in the world, and I find
myself a bit confused, as I can’t
figure out who’s playing the
underdog, who’s playing the cat, and
who’s playing the dog, or coyote or
bully. But we, as a nation, are playing
one of those roles.
It was widely reported recently that
the U.S. Navy sent a warship within
12 nautical miles of the Subi Reef,
which was at one time merely a reef
that was submerged during high tide
in the Spratly Islands. As part of
their fight for dominance over all of
the South China Sea, the Chinese
military has begun building artificial
islands out of just about anything
they can, even building a landing
strip long enough to land fighter jets,
on this one in particular.
If the idea of building an island
out of a reef sounds like some kind
of science fiction reserved for the
supervillain in a James Bond movie,
it’s really not all that unusual. The
tiny island of Singapore has been
turning its trash and refuse into
biomass and using it to increase
the size of its own island for over a
decade, so this is hardly anything
new.
What is new, however, is the idea of
doing this in the middle of waters
previously shared for commercial
fishing and military movements
by the Philippines (a strong U.S.
ally), the Republic of Vietnam, and
Taiwan (another strong U.S. ally).
More of a global game of chess than
cat and mouse, China is attempting
to extend its influence in a region
that the U.S. has been strategically
boxing in through military alliances,
and trying to find its own breathing
room. And the actions of the U.S.
Navy sending a warship dangerously
close to these waters that China is
attempting to claim brings back other
instances of military encroachment
on another front.
Yes, of course, I’m going back to
Russia.
It was not very long ago that
President Obama was filming a
reality TV series in Alaska (seriously,
I can understand too much golf, but
how does a president have time to
film a reality TV episode?) when
Russian warships did the same exact
thing, sailing perilously close to the
Alaskan coastline.
And, of course, we did nothing.
This only came after Russian
bombers and fighters encroached
US and NATO airspace several
hundred times in the previous year,
one of those being a Russian bomber
equipped with a nuclear payload
flying over the English channel.
At the same time world news was
reporting the US Naval warship
sailing provocatively close to the
disputed Chinese island, US news
was reporting another Russian
encroachment. The Russian spy ship
Yantar has been slowly trawling the
ocean off the eastern seaboard en
route to Cuba, following the route of
the underwater fiber optic cables used
to relay internet telecom messages.
This created quite a bit of
anticipation, as the Yantar is
equipped with two self-propelled
deeply submersible craft, capable of
reaching those cables and cutting or
tapping into them. Defense analysts
cited that Russian activity has greatly
increased along all of the underwater
cable routes to levels not seen since
the Cold War, and as those cables
carry some $10 trillion worth of
transactions daily, it has quite a few
people on high alert.
So it seems that while we constantly
poke one sleeping giant (China) with
an extremely provocative military
stick, we completely ignore that
the other, a very much awake giant
(Russia), is poking us with their own.
And it’s the reasoning behind
this that has me baffled. Are we
admitting an alliance between Russia
and China, responding to Russian
aggression by acting as the aggressor
toward China?
Are we admitting that Russia would
overpower us if it came down
to armed conflict, and choosing
instead to pick a fight with China?
Or have communications between
the highest echelons of our defense
strategy completely broken down,
in a mom-not-talking-to-dad type of
environment?
Whatever the answer may be, it
doesn’t look like any of them will
lead to a happy ending. In the global
game of cat and mouse, in which
the general public is only privy
to seeing small glimpses of news
reported in the open source, we are
left to wonder: Who’s playing the cat,

Folding Just Like the L.A. Dodgers:
Everything is a mess:
Just as predictable as the Dodgers folding in the playoffs each year is this week’s
presumable folding by the Democrat-loving Republican leaders in the debt ceiling
face-off. Boehner and McConnell apparently had a love-in with Reid and Pelosi,
along with some help from the President to raise the debt ceiling until Obama is out
of office, playing golf seven days a week. (By the way, Obama twice voted to not raise the
debt ceiling when Bush was in office.) Why should John Boehner care? He will be on the
golf course seven days a week himself next month!
I came across seven aspects of culture and it dawned on me how each one is thought
of so differently by each side of the political spectrum.
*Family
*Religion
*Government
*Business
*Education
*Media
*Art & Entertainment
Even though I predicted it, this still drives me bat crap crazy. Imagine a business
losing money hand over fist, sinking into deeper debt and the owner tells the kids,
who will be taking over the business in 2017: Hey, don’t worry, I’m going to increase
the debt so much that when you take the business over, it will be impossible for you to recover
financially. But, why should I care? I’ll have plenty of money when I leave. By the way, the
board of directors agrees with this too, and the chairman is retiring next month, so he doesn’t
give a rip either.”
Why, oh freaking why, can’t these Republicans see the irreparable harm they are
doing by allowing the debt to rise to such dangerous levels? It’s because they are
scared of their own political shadows and don’t have the brains or spinal fortitude
to force an uncomfortable, difficult thing. Come, guys & gals, drastic times call for
drastic measures. Put your big boy and big girl political pants on and stop cowering
behind your political fear.
Do What Many Businesses Do:
Do what small business owners like I have to do all the time; use current revenue to
pay old bills. It’s not ideal, but it’s the “money dodgeball game” many of us have to play
to ride out financial storms, and boy is this a financial storm! You can still service
debt and you can still make Social Security payments without raising the debt limit.
Use the reserves from the record amount of tax revenue flowing in. You won’t cause
the government to default; there’s enough money to pay bills. As I write this, you
may be able to feel ranting rage rising up within my soul. Words cannot express my
frustration, especially when I think about my kids and grandkids and what these selfish,
narrow-minded, gutless, so-called leaders are doing to their future.
Breaking these down a little more; my addition to the list is:
*Economy
*Race Relations
*Law Enforcement
*Immigration
Each one of these has such a vast difference of opinion that affects them, that it
reminds me of the Beatles song that goes something like: I say yes, you say no, I say
stop, you say go, you say why and I say I don’t know. In this case, I do know why. There
has been such an emotional force for feel good crap, that when implemented, it
feeds upon itself until the results are out of control. This causes common sense to
be swallowed up, allowing a distortion of the way God and our forefathers intended
things to be. One example is in the religion category. There is a high school football
coach in the state of Washington who has been put on warning that if he continues
to have a team prayer after games, he will be fired. Each of these cultural aspects are so
screwed up, it will take a miracle or a revolution to resolve the way they should be for generations
to come. A miracle would be nice; unfortunately, I’m betting on a revolution.
Recent Headlines Catching My Attention: (with my 2 cents added)
U.S. Navy to Send Warship near Disputed Islands Claimed by China: I bet that has
China shakin’ in their boots.
Biden: I’m Disappointed in Donald Trump: I bet Donald was devastated when he heard
that.
We Need More Control Laws:
In light of the terrible, intentional killing of people during the Oklahoma State
homecoming parade by a woman driving a car, shouldn’t we be calling for stricter
car control? After all, it was the car that killed the people. There was a recent random
sword attack that killed some people. What about stricter sword control laws to prevent
these sort of attacks? Remember the airline pilot that purposely crashed the jet,
killing all on board? We better look into jet airline control, don’t you think? It’s bad
when someone slugs somebody in the mouth with their fist or kicks them in the
groin area with their foot, strangles someone to death with their hands or even when
a man rapes a woman. There should be more laws restricting use of body parts, right?
There need to be a lot more control laws to protect us from harmful mechanisms,
because the brain has nothing to with harmful actions, right? FYI, for you Liberals –
this was facetious satire.

Revolution?
Quotes of the Week:
I know, I know, this is way out there and it may not happen in my lifetime, but I’m
convinced there could very well be a revolution in our future. There are such stark
differences between lefties and righties, with strong emotions behind each camp. I
don’t see any sort of compromise on the horizon. Some will say there is too much
apathy for this to happen, but our first revolution had citizens who were vehemently
against it, vehemently for it and a bunch who didn’t give a hoot, but it happened
anyway, fueled by the fervent beliefs the patriots had.

Business of the Week: Lee Fazio
Independent Insurance Agent
by Martha Michael
“Service is everything, in my book,” says Fazio, who has more than 30
years of experience in the industry. “They can actually reach me, speak
with me, and get the answers they need.”
Fazio can also explain Medi-Cal, which he describes as a free health insurance program for those who qualify, including those with disabilities, or
families of four earning less than $33,466 annually and individuals earning
less than $16,244 annually, effective January 1, 2016. For those folks on
Medicare, he strongly suggests that they refer to the website www.medicare.gov for non-biased information, rates and health plan ratings.
Fazio is a health systems evaluation consultant, prepared to lay out coverage options for his clients, or help them with an existing issue.
He recommends favorite insurance coverage options such as Kaiser, Anthem Blue Cross, Health Net and Blue Shield of California.
“Sometimes they’re getting the run around with insurance companies, or
with a doctor, and they need help filing a grievance or an appeal,” he says.
“We have major facilities up here that utilize these companies,” says the
agent, who moved to Santa Clarita 12 years ago with his wife, Judith, and
their three daughters. “Healthcare is so important — and all we really have
is our health, our family and our friends.”
Personal contact is what Lee Fazio Certified Insurance Agent brings to
those who call him to discuss their insurance options regarding healthcare.
Covered California, the state’s exchange under ACA Affordable Act that
many refer to as Obamacare, is a system Fazio understands and promotes
for some of his clientele.
You can contact Lee Fazio by calling (818) 415-4097, emailing [email protected] or
visit www.buyinsuranceez.com.
“People don’t realize they can pick up premium assistance that helps every
month,” he explains. “There is cost sharing for individuals and families,
including co-payments, company insurance, deductibles and hospitals.”
While many residents opposed the government healthcare reform, some
have found relief in its strong points, according to Fazio. He has helped
many access Covered California benefits when they were shut out of other
insurance options, often due to pre-existing conditions.

Volunteers to Spend Up to 24 Hours in Kennels to Benefit Local Dog Rescue
By Melissa Lampert
Dozens of volunteers are set to spend up to 24
hours in kennels with local rescue dogs next
month to help raise funds and awareness about the
way shelter dogs live every day.
Called “A Day in Their Paws,” the annual Brittany
Foundation fundraiser gives the public the chance
to buy participants’ “freedom” from the kennels
with donations of $1 per minute.
“Brittany Foundation wants to raise awareness of
how rescue dogs live every day, spending virtually
all of their time in a kennel while waiting to find
their forever homes,” organization officials said.
“Sponsoring a volunteer is a great way to help us
raise funds so that we can continue our life-saving
work.”
The unique fundraising event will also feature an
open house on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 12 Noon to
4 p.m. at the Brittany Foundation with food, live
music, a raffle, a silent auction and tours of the
sanctuary.

Emily Burns
A. J. Stanley
Now in her third year on the
Valencia High School varsity
volleyball team, Emily Burns
had eight kills in her team’s
three-game sweep over Saugus
in a Foothill League match
last week. Valencia improved
to 7-0 in the Foothill League.
This William S. Hart High
School junior had four interceptions in his team’s 24-21 win
over Golden Valley High School
in double overtime. A.J. Stanley’s fourth interception came
in the second overtime period.
He picked off a pass in the end
zone to stop Golden Valley’s
potential game-winning drive.
“As a senior, she was named
captain of the team and has
provided great leadership
on and off the court,” says
Ray Sanchez, girls volleyball coach at Valencia High
School. “Emily has led the
team in both kills and hitting
percentage over the past four
matches. She has also played
outstanding defense over the
period.”
“A.J. was a game-saver last
week,” said Hart High School
Football Coach Mike Herrington. “Five interceptions in
one game – that has not been
done but only a few times in the
history of high school football.
That was an outstanding effort

Community Prepares for Sizable Precipitation from El Niño
B
ecause of the winter forecast of heavy rainfall in Southern
California this year due to El Niño, Santa Clarita residents are
urged to prepare for the impact on community resources. City of Santa
Clarita officials have launched an educational outreach campaign to
inform residents on the importance of El Niño preparation, what they
can do before, during and after heavy rainfall, and information on the
City’s prevention and response efforts.
The new webpage, called “Ready for Rain,” is located at www.SantaClarita.com/ReadyforRain and provides El Niño weather updates,
tips, FAQs, related resources and emergency alert sign-ups.
“With El Niño brewing, we’re expecting a large amount of rain in a
small amount of time, so it’s critical that we prepare now for all that
rain that may come all at once,” said Mayor Marsha McLean.
Heavy rain can cause floods, or in some cases, mudslides in areas
that are near slopes that are unstable or lack vegetation. Residents are
encouraged to follow prevention tips offered on the Ready for Rain
webpage, such as clearing rain gutters and inspecting the roof for any
loose tiles or holes. Equally important, information on what they can
do during and after the rain is also listed on the site.
“There are simple things you can do around your home to minimize
the damage that may come from heavy rainfall in your area,” said
McLean.
To prepare for the worst, city officials will work to clear debris from
streets, clean and monitor storm drains, handle problematic trees and
inspect city facilities, trails and construction sites that may create issues
during heavy rainfall.
“We’re doing our best to get ahead of this potentially damaging
storm system. City staff members have been proactively planning and
reviewing predetermined hot spot areas that we think are vulnerable
to debris flow or flooding. We’re planning ahead so that we’ll have the
proper equipment and staff to handle an emergency if one occurs,”
said McLean.
During a state of emergency, residents are asked to visit the City’s
Emergency Information Blog at santaclaritaemergency.
com. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for
emergency alerts from the City by texting
SCEMERGENCY to 888777 or signing up
online at www.santa-clarita.com/ealerts.

Friends of Castaic Lake
By Melissa Lampert
M
any SCV residents have been to Castaic
Lake for an afternoon of boating,
a family barbecue or the Fourth of July
fireworks show, but few may know about the
dedicated group of volunteers who help make
these days possible.
More than $1 million in charitable funds were
raised at the sold-out event to help veterans in
need, with hundreds of dollars raised in tips
to benefit the Friends of Castaic Lake, who
volunteered their time barbecuing hot dogs and
burgers and serving drinks to attendees.
Formed in 1983, the Friends of Castaic Lake
supports the operation of the lake by helping
maintain the property and holding special
events that support park programs and local
charities.
Up until recently, the Friends also put on a
Fourth of July celebration annually, which
drew thousands of SCV families for music,
food and a fireworks show over the water. The
event was reportedly cancelled due to safety
concerns related to the California drought.
The Friends recently helped put on the
32nd annual Love Ride—the largest and
longest-running one-day motorcycle
fundraising event in the world—in
support of the Wounded Warrior
Project.
In addition to holding special events and
fundraisers at the lake, Friends of Castaic
Lake volunteers also work throughout the
year to help maintain the area.
“A lot of the work we do is improving
the property—planting trees and plants,
painting things,” Lampert said, “so when
people use the lake, it’s a nicer place to
go.”
Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts
and community members gathered
at the lake for an afternoon of food,
drinks and a concert featuring the Foo
Fighters and Social Distortion.
“The Foo Fighters were just
unbelievable,” said Joe Lampert, a
longtime Friends of Castaic Lake
volunteer who helped out at the event.
“They put on a fantastic concert,
and the money went to the Wounded
Warriors so it was a really good cause.”

Hero of the Week - Joe Lampert
By Melissa Lampert
Always an avid boating enthusiast, Joe Lampert became a Friends of Castaic
Lake volunteer more than five years ago.
“I just wanted to give something back to the community at a place I enjoy,” Joe
said. “I enjoy the whole atmosphere, being around people that like the same
things. It’s a beautiful place to be, and a lot of the work we do is improving the
property.”
As the owner of the locksmithing business West Coast Mobile Lock and Key,
Joe has volunteered his skills as a handyman to help maintain the property and
often volunteers to barbecue burgers and hot dogs at special events at the lake.
Joe has owned boats all his life—ranging from catamarans to sailboats—and has
been going to Castaic Lake with his wife, Randi, since the 1980s. In 1987, the
family moved to Castaic so they could spend more time at the lake.
“When we were looking for a house, it was a natural for us,” he said, recalling
how they would spend evenings and weekends windsurfing, sailing and having
meals at the lake.
When Joe isn’t attending monthly Friends of Castaic Lake meetings or
volunteering around the lake, he often spends his free time working on his boat,
fishing or taking his two daughters out on the lake for an afternoon of boating.

Sports Highlights
By Tim Haddock
Football
The Golden Valley football team won its first Foothill League game. Then the
team got plain greedy.
After 45 straight Foothill League losses, nearly a decade of shortcomings, Golden Valley knocked off Canyon, 35-6, on Oct. 16.
Not only did Golden Valley take down one of the most storied programs in
CIF history, the Grizzlies followed by taking Hart to double overtime on Friday
night.
Hart prevailed, 24-21, and narrowly escaped the upset bid by the new Cinderella
of the Santa Clarita Valley.
What a story that would have made. Golden Valley blows out Canyon, winner
of three CIF championships in a row and a 33-game winning streak during the
1980s. The following week, Golden Valley takes down Hart, the No. 6 ranked
team in the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division and winner of nine CIF
titles over its storied history.
Valencia easily took care of West Ranch, 44-6, on Friday
night. Quarterback Cole Parkinson threw two touchdown passes, rushed for a
third, and led a balanced attack all night long.
Running back Jahmar Berkley scored two touchdowns and Andres Alday scored
one. Ely Doyle and Drew Rivello each caught a touchdown pass. Rivello was
Parkinson’s favorite target, catching four passes for 104 yards.
Valencia takes on Canyon at Valencia High on Friday night.
Saugus is still in the hunt for the Foothill League title, but the Centurions will
need some help. Saugus beat Canyon, 31-21, and improved to 2-1 in league.
Saugus quarterback Louis Eusebi led a gutty effort, scoring two rushing touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass. David Aubrey scored on a 50-yard
touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put Saugus up 31-14.
Saugus plays Hart at College of the Canyons on Friday night. Hart can take Saugus out of the Foothill League championship picture with a win.
In the game against Canyon, running back Jesse Camacho carried the load for
Golden Valley. He rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns.
It wasn’t such a good football weekend for Santa Clarita Christian and Trinity
Classical Academy.
Golden Valley led 14-6 at halftime, then dominated the second half. The Grizzlies held Canyon scoreless while scoring 21 points.
Santa Clarita Christian cracked the top 10 in the CIF Southern Section East Valley Division poll two weeks ago. It was the first time Santa Clarita Christian was
ranked in a CIF poll since 2011.
Justice Onu helped the Golden Valley ground attack with 39 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Receiver Will Lahn caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from
quarterback Victor Corona to cap the scoring.
The Cardinals were ranked No. 10. But they quickly fell out of the top 10 after
losing to Capistrano Valley Christian, 37-21, in a San Joaquin League game.
Golden Valley kept the magic alive the following week against Hart. Golden Valley scored the first touchdown of the game and led 14-7 at halftime.
But Golden Valley made too many mistakes in the red zone. Corona was picked
off three times in the end zone and five times in the game.
The biggest pick came in double overtime when AJ Stanley intercepted Corona
in the end zone to stop a potential game-winning drive by Golden Valley. It was
Stanley’s fourth pick of the game and probably the biggest in the history of Hart
football.
Capistrano Valley led 23-0 at halftime and held on for its second win in league.
Santa Clarita Christian, meanwhile, dropped to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in league.
The Cardinals play Saddleback Valley Christian in San Juan Capistrano on Friday night.
An undermanned Trinity Classical Academy football team lost to Mary Star of
the Sea, 48-14, in San Pedro. Trinity dropped to 4-3. The Knights play Excelsior
Christian on Nov. 6.
Girls Volleyball
No team wanted to be the first to lose a Foothill League game to Golden Valley.
Canyon could not escape destiny.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls volleyball team is ranked No. 1 in the CIF
Southern Section Division 5AA poll.
But losing to Golden Valley in double overtime would have been equally embarrassing.
Santa Clarita Christian beat Faith Baptist in four games on Thursday in a Heritage League match. The Cardinals also beat Trinity Classical Academy in four
games on Oct. 13.
Now the question for Golden Valley is: Will the team make the playoffs?
It’s not out of the question. Next up for Golden Valley is West Ranch on Friday
night at Canyon High School.
West Ranch is the new Golden Valley of the Foothill League, 0-3 and in last
place. Foothill League teams have outscored West Ranch 131-20 in those three
games.
The real test for Golden Valley will come in the Foothill League finale against
Saugus. That game could be for third place and the final playoff spot.
Meanwhile, Valencia and Hart are tied for first place in the Foothill League
standings at 3-0.
Trinity has won four matches in a row since losing to Santa Clarita Christian and
is ranked No. 6 in the Southern Section Division 5AA poll.
The Valencia girls volleyball team is ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section
Division 1A poll. Valencia is 7-0 in the Foothill League after sweeping Saugus in
three games on Thursday.
The Vikings have won four of their past five matches and are 16-7 overall.
Rancho Cucamonga is the No. 1 team in the Southern Section Division 1A poll.

Final Mile Challenge Draws Local Youth to Run with
Santa Clarita Marathoners
More than 1,600 local students will join runners on the 26th mile of the Santa
Clarita Marathon November 8. The 2015 Final Mile Challenge, presented by
Kaiser Permanente, has drawn students from five Santa Clarita schools, with a
goal to remind youth of the importance of exercise and forming healthy eating
habits.
During the first months of school, students must complete all 25 training miles
before being invited to run the final mile of the Santa Clarita Marathon. Upon
completion of the 25 miles, students receive a Final Mile Challenge T-shirt to
wear on race day. As they cross the official Santa Clarita Marathon finish line,
they are awarded a Final Mile Challenge finisher’s medal.
Leading up to the race, several schools hosted program rallies where doctors from
Kaiser Permanente gave presentations about the program, training for the run
and also taught students about the importance of making healthy choices.
Students will line up with their schools at 12:30 p.m. on race day to start with a
warm-up stretch before the run. Kicking off the Final Mile Challenge will be the
voice of seven-year-old Valencia resident and Old Orchard Elementary School
student, Navah Renee Stuhr, singing the National Anthem. Navah was one of
many students who tried out for the honor, and she will also be participating
in the Final Mile Challenge. Parents and residents are encouraged to park at
Westfield Valencia Town Center to cheer on student athletes as they cross the

Halloween: A Bit of its Beginnings
by Robin Sandoval
I
Thanks to its current Christian connection to the
saints, All Hallow’s Eve was celebrated throughout
Christian Europe for centuries. However, the holiday didn’t take very well in
parts of the New World, thanks to the heavy Protestant influence in the northern colonies. In the South and in Maryland, though, where Protestants were
fewer in number, Halloween was widely celebrated. As time went on, the celebration of Halloween began to incorporate Native American influences, which
resulted in a uniquely American celebration. Initially, the celebrations included
parties where people would gather to celebrate the harvest, tell stories about
those who had died, and dance and sing. The celebrations also included telling
ghost stories and making light-hearted mischief.
n one form or another, Halloween has been celebrated for millennia. Its
origins date back to the Celtic celebration of Samhain, which marked the
end of the harvest (and, therefore, summer) and the beginning of winter. It
was believed back then that on the night before the new year, the veil between
the worlds of the living and the dead was thinned, and October 31— Samhain – was the day that the dead walked the earth once again. The Celts would
celebrate Samhain by dressing up in costumes and lighting bonfires to frighten
away evil spirits, and would pray to their gods for a prosperous new year.
Ever the assimilators, the Romans merged two of their own festivals with the
Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first Roman festival was Feralia, celebrated
in late October to commemorate the passing of the dead. The second festival
was in honor of Pomona, goddess of fruit and trees. When Rome converted to
Christianity, many of their holidays eventually did as well. In 609, Pope Boniface IV declared that May 13 would be a holiday to commemorate Christian
martyrs. Later, Pope Gregory III would expand the holiday to include all saints
as well as martyrs, moved the date to November 1, and renamed it “All-Hallowmas.” Additionally, November 2 was declared to be All Souls’ Day – a day to
remember the dead.
The Halloween we celebrate today didn’t begin to emerge until the mid-19th
century, when the Irish fled the potato famine back home. They brought with
them Irish and English Halloween traditions, which included dressing up in
costumes and going from house-to-house asking for food and money.
Christianity spread to Celtic lands by about 1000 A.D., and the holidays of All
Hallowmas and All Souls’ Day were celebrated by the newly converted Celts.
Samhain was included, too, though it was renamed All Hallow’s Eve. The Celtic
people celebrated All Hallow’s Eve by dressing up and lighting bonfires, though
they no longer prayed to their ancient gods. Eventually, the name and holiday
changed through the years to become the Halloween we know and love today.
As time went on, Halloween evolved into a holiday about community and
neighborhood get-togethers, while pranks, the dead, and witchcraft have fallen
to the wayside. By the 1920s, Halloween was no longer a religious holiday at all,
and mainly included dressing up, neighborhood parties, parades, and of course,
trick-or-treating.
Here’s wishing you a happy and safe Halloween!

COC Art Gallery to Present
Audiences with
‘The In-Between’
A
new exhibit opens at College of
the Canyons Art Gallery on Thursday, Nov. 12, featuring the work of Los
Angeles-based artist Trine Churchill. The
unique, abstract exhibition called “The InBetween” is described by Churchill as “a
bit dreamlike, and a bit real-world.”
“I, like most viewers I would guess, have
an immediate response to this exhibition
that feels familiar, yet unfamiliar at the
same time,” said Larry Hurst, COC Art
Gallery director. “You recognize images — there may be a tree, landscape, a
monkey, dog or a person — and yet there
is a mystery that remains.”
Churchill is a Los Angeles-based, contemporary painter from Copenhagen,
Denmark. She received her Bachelor of
Arts in Fine Art from Otis College of Art
and Design, and also studied at the École
nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.
With a preference for working in what
she describes as the “fictive landscape,”
Churchill actually decided on the title
for this exhibition before she even started
creating — which isn’t usually the case.
However, having a title in mind allowed
Churchill to paint literally and let her
imagination take things where they needed
to go. By letting her inner judge take a
break, Churchill ultimately relied on her
own imagination to create the final result.
“The In Between” has been created for
viewers to see the symbolic meaning of
social and historical references through an
abstract landscape. While there is a narrative to her work, Churchill also invites
audiences to enter their own imagination
and find their own personal story within
her art.
“I had been reflecting on what my work is
really about, which I still to this day have
a hard time giving a definite answer to,”
Churchill said. “Technically, the paint is
rendered realistically, but also abstractly
and somewhat stylistically. The narrative,
which is visibly there, seems almost tangible — but then not so much so.”
“The In-Between” will run through
Wednesday, Dec. 16, at the COC Art
Gallery located on the college’s Valencia
campus.
An artist’s reception will be held from 4
to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12, in the gallery. A special conversation with the artist
will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.
The COC Art Gallery is open Tuesday
through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
and by special appointment on Mondays
and Fridays.
For more information about the College of the
Canyons Art Gallery or the exhibition, “The
In-Between” visit www.canyons.edu/artgallery

OPINION & LETTERS
Doug’s Extracurricular,
Non-Political Rant Snippets
-Why do carpool lanes exist? If the regular lanes are
flowing nicely, so are the carpool lanes, and if the regular
ones are backed up, so is the carpool lane. As Hillary said,
“What difference does it make?”
-In Arizona, the carpool lanes have no yellow lines; you
can go in and out of the lane without restriction. It allows
them to flow better.
-In Phoenix and Tucson, gas is $1 less per gallon than here. When it goes down
just 25 cents in California, we celebrate.
-Why is it that so many freeways in California are constantly under
construction to expand lanes? Why don’t they just build them that way to start
with?
-It’s frustrating when you’re on Via Princessa at 5 p.m. and traffic is backed up
from Whites Canyon Road down to Sierra Hwy, with only one lane to get up to
Whites. It bugs me when I look over and see three empty lanes going the other
way. Can’t they move a lane over to the other side?
-Speaking of traffic frustration, heading west on Soledad and trying to turn left
onto Bouquet Canyon can be really frustrating. They built the median so wide
into the left turn lanes, not many vehicles can get by the cars backed up in the
regular lane. If they would just chop that part of the median in half and extend
the left turn lane farther back, it would make a lot of sense.
-I’ve been hearing some not-so-pleasant remarks about Steve Sarkisian and
Lamar Odom, regarding their personal struggles. We each handle, process and
react to our demons in different ways, and some of us handle them better than
others. It goes to show you that wealth, power and success are not a guarantee
to personal happiness and fulfillment. We’re all one phone call from being on
our knees, so lighten up on the judging of these guys.
-Did you hear about Don Mattingly supposedly getting the managerial job with
the Florida Marlins? The way it works is the Dodgers have to pay his salary for
2016 (around $5 million), less what the Marlins pay him. If I was the owner
of the Marlins, I’d say, “Donnie, how about I don’t pay you squat and the Dodgers
pay the whole amount they owe you. Will that work for you?” And Mattingly would
probably say, “Good idea, let’s stick it to those ingrates!”
The Whole Foods Nightmare
By Sarah Farnell
Janet, a 47-year-old mother of three,
was just like any other woman. She
loved knick-knacks, her husband Michael, and Rachel Maddow. Janet was
the main character of a classic American success story.
Not all was quiet on the western front,
however. For on this particular date,
Janet was out of Vermont cheddar
cheese — the very cheese used for a
special spooky macaroni recipe used
by the family for years. It was Halloween night, and Janet was not about
to let the absent dairy product destroy
Hallow’s Eve. It was then that she
decided to make the pilgrimage to the
one market that could soothe anyone’s
consumer conscience: Whole Foods.
Mindful to grab the reusable plastic
bags, Janet dove into her Prius and
peddled down Valencia Boulevard.
Janet pulled into the parking lot,
ejected her Bon Jovi CD, and proceeded through the dimly lit lot. She
grabbed a shopping cart loaded with
three empty water bottles, a used tissue,
and a squeaky wheel that sounded like
death itself. Janet was ready.
But as she entered Whole Foods, she
began having flashbacks. The word
“lactose” kept appearing in her mind
— as if she was under some kind of
spell.
Soon after the flashback subsided,
she reached her final destination. The
Vermont cheddar was within her reach.
Just then, Janet was thrown into another flashback, and this time, a ghost
that looked extremely like a Whole
Foods employee
burst through the
fridge.
“REMEMBER
OUR DEAL,
JANET. I GIVE YOU THE GIFT OF
FUEL EFFICIENCY. IN RETURN,
YOU GIVE ME YOUR ABILITY TO
DIGEST DAIRY.”
The ghost vaporized, leaving Janet
with the sudden realization that she
had gambled her love for cheese in
exchange for a lower gas bill. When
Janet agreed to the terms and conditions of the curse, she did not read the
most important clause: “Every Halloween, Janet will forget about her lactose
intolerance. Eat that, Janet.”
Janet sobbed, but that did not stop her
from doing what needed to be done.
She grabbed the cheese, paid the outrageous price of $32.99 and drove home.
She and Michael prepared the family
recipe as usual, but this time, Janet’s
tears fell into the recipe.
“Janet, what is wrong with you? Get a
tissue or something. Stop crying in our
son’s macaroni,” said Michael.
The damage was done, so Janet ate the
soiled macaroni herself — but she did
not experience any discomfort. The
cure for her ailment was her own tears.
“I am so relieved that I can enjoy this
with my family,” Janet cried … at least
until next year, when she will forget
about her lactose intolerance and find
the cure all over again.
Still Watching the Series for ‘The Swede’
By Krissy Sandberg Ball
just started a low-carb diet that excluded alcohol.) But the next two games were to be played
at Wrigley Field, so we all had high hopes that
the Cubs would win games three and four and
five, etc.
Today is October 26, 2015, and it would have
been my dad’s 91st birthday. Die-hard Cub fan
Swede Sandberg passed away in 2001 at the age
of 77. So, the sad truth is that if my dad was
alive today, he still wouldn’t have seen the Cubs
win the World Series, not to mention even see
them play in the World Series. The last time the
Cubs made it to the World Series was 1945. My
dad was 21 years old and World War II had just
ended. And as we all know (and we don’t need
to be reminded of it on a daily basis), the last
time the Cubs won a World Series was 1908.
These past couple of weeks have been a roller
coaster ride for us Cub fans. This was going
to be our year to win the World Series, and it
looked like it just might happen. They made it to the wildcard spot. Then they
beat the Pirates in the wildcard game. Then they won the division series against
our rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals. Winning that series felt like we had actually won the World Series! I cried like a baby, and I wasn’t alone. I belong to a
Cub Fan group on Facebook, and even the manly men on the site admitted that
they cried. For a Cub fan, a true die-hard Cub fan, making it to post-season and
beyond means the rest of the world stops and we begin obsessing about the Cubs
going all the way.
The excitement was building. We were about to play the Mets for the National
League Championship. It was predicted in the “Back to the Future Part II” movie that the Cubs won the World Series in 2015, so it was supposed to happen,
right? Dressed in Cub gear from head to toe, I watched the first game against the
Mets. We lost the game. Sure, it was a bummer, but it was just the first game.
Then we lost the next game. I couldn’t sleep; I couldn’t eat; I couldn’t drink! (I
We lost games three and four. I cried like a baby
again. Yes, in the grand scheme of life, the Cubs
not making it to the World Series is insignificant. Yes, we do realize that there are other
things more important going on in the world.
But, we don’t need to be shamed for wanting
our team to win the World Series.
I’m not angry at the Cubs for losing all the
games to the Mets. Those boys had a spectacular season and played well and made it to post-season. I’m excited for next year,
and I look forward to watching them play in Mesa, Arizona for Spring training.
But, I am sad for the old, die-hard Cub fans who won’t make it another year
to see their Cubbies go to the World Series. Their families will be sad that Old
Uncle Charlie or Grandpa Jim or Great-Aunt Mabel will be buried before seeing
their beloved Cubs win the World Series. And those of us die-hard Cub fans who
are still alive and kicking will, yet again, have to be reminded that our team just
can’t win. We get kicked when we’re down.
But we are used to it. We are tough as nails; we are die-hard; we are devoted; we
are family; we are Cub fans from the day we are born until the day we die.
Happy #91 in heaven to my dear old dad, Harry Russell (The Swede) Sandberg,
die-hard Cub fan from 1924 until forever. I love you, Dad.

Congressman Calls for
Action Against Drought
M
embers of the U.S. House of
Representatives drafted a letter
to call attention to the possibility that
the upcoming storms of El Nino could
make a dent in California’s drought
problem. In a letter from Representative
Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and signed
by 14 members of Congress, including
Rep. Steve Knight (R-Calif.), leaders
called upon President Barack Obama
and Gov. Jerry Brown to take advantage
of the projected increase in precipitation
this winter to offset the extreme drought
conditions by capturing rain water.
The letter stated: “If El Nino-related precipitation materializes and we are able
to capture it for human use, this could
provide some much needed water to our
constituents.”
In July, the House of Representatives
passed HR 2898, the Western Water and
American Food Security Act of 2015,
a bill Knight co-sponsored that would
set up a framework to capture, store and
transport water throughout California.
U.S. Rep. Steve Knight
“El Nino could be an opportunity for
Californians to see some real relief from
this drought if we act quickly,” said
Knight. “We are not in a position to let
a single drop go to waste, so we must
put ourselves in a position to take full
advantage.”
