Hippie Style
Revolutionary.Unconventional. Hippie, also spelled
hippy, was born during the 1960s and 1970s following a
counterculture movement that rejected the mores of
mainstream American life. Hippies advocated
nonviolence and love, a popular phrase being “Make
love, not war,” for which they were sometimes called
“flower children.”
The hippie style is freedom and return to nature.
It became a must: hand-made or self-produced clothes
alongside bell-bottom pants, maxi skirts and large
micro top decorated with psychedelic patterns, floral or
with tie-dye prints.
In the 70s, it was Yves Saint Laurent, together with Karl
Lagerfeld for Chloé, who introduced hippie into the fashion
system, creating a luxury version of the style.
But it was Thea Porter, born in Jerusalem, who gave a new
and unique vision of the style. She was the first who
introduced the “boho-chic” style in the Sixities, a perfect
mix of hippie and bohemian influences.
She sold exotic decorations, antique jewellery, carpets and
furniture in a ethnic style, revisited by her taste and
wrapped in precious fabrics.
Indian prints, ancient materials with taste of the
Mediterranean, the gipsy mood are elements that fascinate
the Swinging London, who loves to dress exotic and breathe
international air.
The top dressing item to make this style famous in just one
year was the caftan.
During the 70s a lot of designers reinvented the hippie/boho
chic style.
Emilio Pucci, and Fiorucci showed their ideas with elements
of boho-chic style with long and mini dresses within oriental
and flower patterns. Turbans or bandanas covered the head.
Dior met the gipsy style, a mix of colours and sensuality.
Embellish the figure with elegant accessories.
Missoni welcomed it with knitwear, an invasion of jacquard
patterns, jersey fabrics, the iconic zig-zag geometry and
decorative accessories as bandanas and necklaces.
Hippie style disappeared towards the end of that decade. It
made a comeback in the end of the 80s and still regularly
appears on the world’s most prestigious runways.
Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis showed a mix of hippy elements with
grunge style, typical of the 90s.
Yves Saint Laurent created the “Roses” Wedding Dress.
Tom ford, Creative Director of Gucci in ‘99 changed it all again.
The “New hippy style” had brilliantly created a glamour
substitute hippie woman.
He made over the image of Cher, his inspiration for this
collection, and he created tongue-in-chic use of hibiscus
prints in loose, hipster trousers and flirty, ruffled dresses.
Leather jacket and boots completed the figure.
In the 2000s, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss were the
Icon of the return of hippy/boho-chic style. During
fashion week, we started to see all the taste and
ideas of various designers.
Roberto Cavalli was the pionner of this style. He
mixed elements of gispy and hippie mood with long
dresses, transparencies and floor-skimming fringed
dresses. For D&G long and mini dresses, foulardprinted chiffon dresses with fantasies such as fruit,
flowers ect..
Asimmetry was mastered to emphasize the figure.
Hyppie met Wedding. Kate Moss was gorgeous in
John Galiano hippy –chic wedding dress.
Today fashion looks to the past and set the rules of hippie
clothing with inspirations from hippy-chic, dandy, folk, gipsy
and boho Geek-chic style suitable to complete the
contemporany look of “flower’s children”. Fringes, long dress,
flower patterns, flared pants, stripes mini dresses and
coloured dresses are the elements that emphasise the figure.
Peace & love to everybody!

Barcellona P.G (Italy) - End of summer. We are
not in a big town. Anxiety, stress and attaining
are distant from here.
There are only some boys and girls who live their
life in the best way that exists. They are free.
Millennians pay tribute to Sixties for their contest.
And they would admire them.
Passionate for music, art or schools why not,
Millennians are not different from Sixties.
Young, free, artists, professionals with the joy of
life: Friendship, Fun, Love.
Fashion commands, those flowers are their
power.
Hippie is not only a style or a claim of personal
political thinking as in the past.
It’s a way of living, an attitude. Express ourselves
in multicolour shades.
In everyone of us a hippie is coming out.
Or it has already blossomed out.
