Fluff Factor- Also known as Total Parameter, can vary depending on bow style and the type of ribbon you are using. The fluff usually ranges from .25” to 2”. When using sheer or thin width ribbon the fluff factor is usually on the lower end. While with the satin and grosgrain large width ribbon the fluff factor is higher. Also, the more loops the bow has the higher the fluff factor will be. - Minimum Difficulty Only takes one strand of ribbon to make. - Average Difficulty Requires more than one strand of ribbon. - Higher Difficulty Requires the making of several bows stacked on top of each other. Crease – The folding of ribbon prior to setting it into the Mini Bowdabra® Mountain Up- Pinch the sides of the ribbon and push the center “up”. Mountain Down- Pinch the sides of the ribbon in and push center “down”. Spray- Strands of ribbon placed inside and along the top of a bow. 7 (Standard) Basic Bow Formula: Width of the Bow X (Number of Loops +Fluff Factor) +2(Length of each tail) *Fluff Factor for Basic Bow is usually 1, 1.5, or 2 depending on width of the ribbon used and style of the ribbon. A “Mountain Down” crease is used when first beginning your bow. To make the crease pinch sides in and push center down. Place the “Mountain Down” crease into the Mini Bowdabra. When making your bow loops pinch ribbon sides and push the center up. Press “Mountain Up” crease into the center of the Mini Bowdabra. 10 Diagonal Cut: Position your scissors at an angle and cut the ribbon in a slant. Dove-Tail: Dovetail both ends: fold the ribbon in half lengthwise. Position your scissors at the folded edge of the ribbon and cut the end at a 45° angle. Unfold your ribbon and you have a professional, finished look to your ribbon tails. 11 Bowdabra® recommends using clear nail polish to seal the ends of ribbon and prevent fraying. Clear nail polish dries quickly and allows all ages to participate in bow making, safely. A fray blocker can also be used at the end of ribbons and is available at any local craft store. Placing the ends of the ribbon over the flame of a lighter can also seal the ribbon. However, extreme caution should be used! The flame can darken ribbon or even set the ribbon on fire. Another alternative for sealing ribbon is using a wood burning tool. Many professional bow makers choose to use a wood burning tool. 12 Can I use any type of ribbon when making hair bows? All hair bow directions can be used with any style ribbon (organza, grosgrain, and stain). What is the best way to navigate through this e-book? Start by doing a quick glance over all this book has to offer. When choosing your bows start with some of the easier (one ) bows and gradually work your way to some of the harder bows as you gain experience. After finishing your bow follow instructions for adding hair bow hardware and then a finishing ribbon (instructions located in Chapter 12). How do I know which hair bow should be attached to which hair bow clip? Experiment with different hair bow clips to determine which one is best for your application. It has less to do with the style of the bow and more to do with the type of hair the bow is going into. Do I have to use Bowdabra Bow Wire? Bowdabra Bow Wire is essential for making these hair bows. The design of the Bowdabra Bow Wire holds everything together tightly and makes for a long lasting sturdy hair bow. Bowdabra Bow Wire and Bowdabra Products can be found on the shelves of Michaels, A.C. Moore, Hancock Fabrics, Joann Fabrics, Pat Catan’s, & Walmart. Can I use the Hair Bow Formula with inches and centimeters? YES, the formulas work with either inches or centimeters. How do I keep my stacked bows tight one on top of the other? After you have tied the bows one on top of the other. Twist each individual bow clockwise to pull the Bowdabra Bow Wire tightly. Why do my hair bows not look like the ones in the picture? It is important to not skip any steps. Remember to always scrunch down the bow with your Mini Bowdabra Bow Wand, as well as pull your Bowdabra Bow Wire tightly while the bow is still inside the Mini Bowdabra. And always remember to fluff and shape your bow when you are done! How do I keep my hair bows shape? Once bow is made and shaped spray your bow with a regular starch according to the manufacture’s directions. Let the bow dry for 1 – 2 minutes before using. What is the best way to store my hair bows? The best way to store hair bows is to make a hair bow holder . A hair bow holder keeps bows from getting crushed and /or misshapen in storage. How do I keep my hair bows in fine hair? To prevent hair bows from slipping out of fine hair; glue on the top-underneath of hair clips small strips of latex free (in case of allergies) shelf lining. 13 Basic Bow 2” Tails Basic Bow 2” Tails Tails UP & Tails Down Basic Bow 2” Tails 6 Loops Basic Bow Extra Long Tails One-Sided Ribbon Basic Bow 4” Tails Double Stacked Basic Bow 2” Tails 8 Loops One-Sided Bow Type 3” Wide 4” Wide 5” Wide 6” Wide Basic Bow (4 Loops) 2” Tails 22” 28” 34” 40” Basic Bow (6 Loops) 2” Tails 28” 36” 44” 52” Basic Bow (8 Loops) 2” Tails 34” 44” 54” 64” Basic Bow Formula: Width of the Bow X (Number of Loops +Fluff Factor) +2(Length of each tail) *Fluff Factor for Basic Bow is usually 1, 1.5, or 2 depending on width of the ribbon used and style of the ribbon. Basic Bows can be made with varying loops and tail lengths using the above formula. Pre-measuring is required if you want both tail lengths to be side by side. If made directly from the spool one tail will be behind the bow while the other is in the front of the bow. Bow tails can be cut as diagonal angles, dove-tails, or just a straight edge. Basic Bows can be attached to any type of hair bow hardware. 15 Table of Contents Ch. 1 Helpful Hints Ch. 2 Basic Bows Ch. 3 Pinwheel Bows Ch. 4 Boutique Bows Ch. 5 Loopy Bows Ch. 6 Spiky Bows Ch. 7 Baby Bows Ch. 8 Pet Bows Ch. 9 Themed Bows Ch.10 Stacked Bows Ch.11 Beaded Bows Ch.12 Finishing Touches Ch. 13 Resources (For Bow Pictured) •Mini Bowdabra •Bowdabra Bow Wire •Hair Bow Tool & Ruler •Morex Ribbon for 3” Wide Bow •1.5” wide 22” long •Morex Ribbon Finishing Knot •5/8” wide 5” long (approx.) •Alligator Clip •Clear Nail Polish •Glue Dots To purchase materials visit: Bowdabra® Ribbon Crafts & Things Store 17 Begin by gathering all the materials you will need for this project. 18 Place Bowdabra® Hair Bow Tool and Ruler onto the Mini Bowdabra, leaving a space at the bottom for the Mini Bowdabra tower to move. Glue dots are easy to work with and allow all ages to participate in bow making, safely. Tacky Glue is another method of adhering finishing ribbon and knots to the center of the bow. However, tacky glue can take some time to dry and the time spent making a bow and waiting for it to dry is considerably longer. A Hot Glue Gun is another common method used to finish bows and line hair clip hardware. Bowdabra choices not to use a Hot Glue Gun so that all ages and abilities can easily and safely make bows. However, professional bow makers often use a hot glue gun for finishing knots and to line their hair clips with ribbon prior to attaching a bow. 460 Table of Contents Ch. 1 Helpful Hints Ch. 2 Basic Bows Ch. 3 Pinwheel Bows Ch. 4 Boutique Bows Ch. 5 Loopy Bows Ch. 6 Spiky Bows Ch. 7 Baby Bows Ch. 8 Pet Bows Ch. 9 Themed Bows Ch.10 Stacked Bows Ch.11 Beaded Bows Ch.12 Finishing Touches Ch. 13 Resources Open alligator clip and attach Bowdabra Bow Wire securely against the bottom prong. 462 Run Bowdabra Bow Wire along the underneath of the Alligator Clip and knot.
