ADEL ABDESSEMED ______________________________________________________________ Untitled (Three Snakes), 2009 Adel Abdessemed was born in 1971 in Constantine, Algeria. He currently lives and works in Paris. Abdessemed transforms well-known materials and imagery into unexpected and charged artistic declarations, working across a wide range of media, including drawing, video, photography, performance, and sculpture. Pulling freely from a myriad of sources—personal, historical, social, and political—his visual language is simultaneously rich and economical, sensitive and controversial, radical and mundane. His art addresses the underlying effects of globalised society on the individual, often using his own personal circumstances as a point of departure. In 2012, his work was the subject of a major solo exhibition at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. His work can also be found in numerous prominent international collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneva; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Fondation François Pinault, Venice and the Yuz Foundation, Hong Kong.
