Hi Folks
Just fresh back from the Echuca Winter Blues Festival
and what a great Festival it was with a fantastic line up of
performers. The MBAS unearthed stage was very popular
with the punters on Saturday afternoon with the venue
quite full. We had a great display of unearthed talent on
show and it was a wonderful experience to meet these
great young talented musicians and we sincerely wish
them every success. I am certain we will be hearing a lot
more of them in the future. The MBAS wishes to thank
Radcliffes for accommodating the Unearthed Stage. We
would like to thank Management and staff for looking after
the performers and committee which made it such a
pleasurable weekend.
The MBAS would like make special thank you to John Williams from KustomShop
Guitars for donating a special edition custom made SRV Guitar for the MBAS to raffle
over the coming months. John also fronts the band Double Shot Of Blues and is a
great supporter of young blues musicians and frequently gets them up to play at his
gigs.
Entries have now closed for the Vic Tas awards and we have received nine of the
highest quality entrants. The Judges are going to have a tough time I certainly am
glad I am not one of them .
Nick Charles “Into The Blues”, Blue Eyes Cry “Sleepin’ Alone”, Mr Black & Blues
“Blow These Tracks – Live On The Blues Train”, Dan Dinnen “Last Thing On My
Mind”, Leigh Sloggett “More Than I Need”, Chris Wilson & Geoff Achison “Box of
Blues”, Shaun Kirk “The Wick Sessions”, Jules Boult “Almost Alone”, Alister Turrill
“Reverence & Resonance”.
Congratulations to Flamin Crows for taking out The Bridgetown Blues Challenge ,
The MBAS wishes you all the best at the IBC in Memphis.
Just a reminder folks the month of Duets continues throughout August—it will be a
fantastic month and you will need to book early for a table as I anticipate big
attendances.
Also this month is National Blues Day celebrating Dutch Tilders birthday on Thursday
29th August . We would like thank Lloyd Spiegel for leading the evening.
Okay folks that’s it from me hope to see you soon.
Cheers John
Livin the Blues
MBAS is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to bring Blues enthusiasts
together and support and promote Australian Blues artists locally and
overseas.
We run functions such as the Youth in Blues project, jam nights and
workshops where known artists provide support and guidance for aspiring
musicians.
Our 'signature event' is the annual Blues Performer of the Year competition
where the winner is provided with funding to enable them to compete in the
International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis. Previous winners of this
event who have then gone on to win the IBC (Acoustic division) include
Fiona Boyes (2002) and Jimi Hocking (2004). Geoff Achison won the
"Albert King Award" in 1995.
MBAS membership provides the member with a monthly newsletter and
discounts at MBAS functions, affiliated club functions and a variety of cooperating businesses. Members can also advertise their services and gigs
through our monthly newsletter and weekly online updates.

Echuca Winter Blues Festival 2013
Driving up the Hume and we could
already feel the buzz of the Echuca
Winter Blues Festival. It certainly is one
of my favourite festivals due to it being a
fantastic town and entertainment
precinct with shops, cafes, restaurants,
pubs, street stages and riverboats all
prepared and ready to blast some great
blues for the thousands that show up to
enjoy themselves. The weather gods
were again smiling upon us and even
though it was cold it was a “pleasant”
type of cold.
The list of solo, duo, trio and bands
ensured a huge variety of acts to pick
from. Acts such as Blues Mountain, Jimi
Hocking, Chris Wilson, Collard Greens
and Gravy, Dreamboogie, Geoff
Achison, Fiona Boyes, Lloyd Spiegel,
Louis King and The Liars Club, Catfish
Voodoo, Cass Eager, Mojo Webb Band
and many, many more played their
hearts out to please the multitude of
grateful and enthusiastic punters.
There is no doubt that this festival just
goes from strength to strength each year
with a first class line up of gold plated
Morris Demellis
blues artists belting out their individual
Blues style. What also makes it different
is the effort put into the Blues Boot camp
for budding musos (special thanks to
Wayne Jury and team) and the many
future Blues artists hosted by the MBAS
at Radcliffe’s (MBAS Stage) giving them
an opportunity to play to a crowd.
from the program, at some stages it was
stressful and confusing because it was
so difficult to pick from such a fantastic
line-up. At one stage we did a sort of
pub crawl where we would watch an act
for 2 – 3 songs and move to next venue
and so on which was a lot of fun and we
got to see a smorgasbord of artistic.
It was pleasing to see new young
upcoming talent such as Sammy Owen
Band, Justin Yap Band, Sean
McConnell, Tex Miller, The Sundanze
Kid, The Stormy Mondays and Snake
Eyed Rollers. The Blues scene will
remain alive and kicking with such great
young talent coming up through the
ranks. A special thank you to the MBAS,
the committee and volunteers who put in
a great effort to foster these youngsters
at Radcliffe’s throughout the weekend
The crowd really enjoyed Louis King and
the band with special guest Joel Plymith
on sax. Louis had the crowd laughing
with his antics and the rhythm section
was just sensational. Special mention to
Cass Eager who filled in for a couple of
sets when P J O’Brien was rushed to
hospital. Typical of the old saying “the
show must go on” PJ rocked up to do
the last set and he certainly did not hold
back. Hold you are feeling better PJ.
Most venues were filled to capacity
highlighting the success of this festival.
Whether you were browsing the many
shops, having a drink or snack, watching
the crowds or just listening to the music
the vibe was one of fun and friendship.
There were so many acts to choose
There is no doubt the festival was a
success and for those that could not
make it, you really missed a great
weekend. Make sure you book early for
next year coz it will only get better. Bring
on Winter Blues 2014

“Sleepin’ Alone” Blue Eyes Cry
www.blueeyescry.com
So the story goes that a young couple living in the sun in a place called
Woolgoolga (up around the Coffs Harbour area I believe?) decided they
need to come to the big smoke in order to become real blues musos. So they
packed all their worldly goods into their van and headed off down the
highway. Landing in the inner west of Melbourne, they soon discovered the
MBAS and John Durr...and the rest is history!! ...and when I say history, I
mean No.1 on the Reverbnation charts.
Iseula Hingano (vocals) and Nathan Brett (guitar) are the band’s nucleus,
with the able assistance of Cameron Smith on drums and Stuart Prendergast
on bass. Of the 10 tracks included on the CD, Ise and Nathan wrote 7. The
remaining tracks were written by luminaries such as Freddie King “Me and My Guitar” and Willie Dixon “Little Red
Rooster...not your typical arrangement of “Rooster” by the way.
Produced by John Durr of Black Market Music, “Sleepin’ Alone” was recorded at Sing Sing in Melbourne in March
2013, engineered by Aaron Dobos and Rob Dillon, mixed at Prince Street Studios and mastered by Rob Dillon. As
expected then, the production values are high and the sound quality is excellent.
The CD is presented in good quality coated card, with lots of credits and background info on how all this came
about. The single band photo was taken by Arterium Creations, the cover designed and imaged by Black Widow
Design and the logo designed by Uniit.
This CD is more sultry and cruisy than party. Slow dancing with a loved one and a bottle of red comes to mind... My
fave track? Maybe track 7 “What’s a Girl To Do?” – a lovely cruisy number that highlights Ise’s great voice.

“More Than I Need” Leigh Sloggett
www.luckyleigh.com
Gentle, thoughtful and accomplished is how I would describe this CD “More
Than I Need” by Leigh Sloggett...and he’s brought along several of Melbourne’s
finest musicians to help him out on this one...names such as Nick Charles, Les
Oldman, Alex Burns, Matthew Arnold, Louis Gill and Lisa Baird...
Leigh wrote all of the tracks included here bar one, “I am a Lonesome Hobo” by
Bob Dylan, and the lyrics to “The Sea” (Peter Newell). You’ll find some
instrumentals are dotted in amongst the set list. Leigh of course takes care of
all vocals and guitar, while Nick Charles takes care of acoustic and electric
guitars, resonator, mandolin and 6 string banjo. While Les Oldman takes care of the drums and other percussion,
Louis Gill plays double bass, Matthew Arnold plays violin, Alex Burns pops up on the harmonica on a couple of the
tracks and Lisa Baird looks after the backing vocals.
Primarily recorded and mixed at Atlantis Sound in Melbourne by Dave McCluney, the CD was then mastered by
David Briggs at The Production Workshop. The sound quality is superb, with vocal and instruments crisp and clear.
Presentation is a good quality card, with a couple of black and white photos on the inner and outer covers, as well
as on a flyer insert. Also included is a little leaflet with the song lyrics, always a welcome addition! Credits are
included inside as well as more extensively on the aforementioned flyer insert. The cover design is by Haruka
Hoshi.
I like this CD very much, it’s a lovely listen by the fire in this cold weather, glass of red to hand...My favourite track is
“No Room at the Top”, possibly the strongest track in terms of depth of sound and lyrics. A beautiful little
instrumental “I Can Fly” rounds things off.
“Last Thing on my Mind” Dan Dinnen
www.dandinnen.com.au
Distributed by: Black Market Music
Dan Dinnen has a deep and abiding appreciation for “the old masters of Chicago
and Delta blues” and it shows. When you see a Dan Dinnen solo or Dan Dinnen
Band show, this is what he presents to you – and it’s always a pleasure to
immerse yourself in these beautiful rich sounds. And this CD is no exception –
Dan has filled it with a range of authentic blues and roots tracks that make you
feel like you’re sitting on a railway station in the deep south, watching a long slow
train rumble by...
It’s interesting then that Dan wrote 12 of the 14 included tracks, with a nod to Willie Dixon and the Memphis Jug
Band on the remaining tracks.
Mr Multitasker Dan takes care of the guitars, ukulele, harmonica, all vocals and footsteps. Along for the ride were
Leigh Barker on double bass apart from 2 tracks where Peter Beulke takes over, Danny McKenna on drums, the
lovely Heather Stewart on fiddle for a couple of the songs, and Greg Dodd also helps out with electric guitar on 2
tracks.
The album was recorded at Boyne Street Studio in Melbourne in May 2013, engineered and mixed by Pikkle
Henning, and mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering. The production is crisp and clear, every word clear as a
bell. Presentation is a heavy card 3-fold cover with some great photography by Darren James. Black Widow Design
took care of CD design and layout. There are plenty of liner notes and credits in clear print to keep you occupied
while you play the CD.
This is a lovely CD, gentle and even wistful in spots, takes you back to a time of slower pace...Fave track? Agghhh
don’t make me choose! OK I’ll go with the very cute little “Float my Boat”, a short little track with a New Orleans feel
to it.
