TUXES ‘N’ TAILS from page 1 packages. As the guests walked in the door they had an opportunity to purchase a glass of champagne for their chance to win stunning diamond earrings donated by Saxon’s Fine Jewelers. This was the second year of ‘Bubbles and Bling’ and it was a huge success raising over $4,000. Following the four course sit-down dinner and auction there was dancing into the wee hours of the night to music from Metro. Everyone was out of their seats and on the dance floor! Raising a “paw” during the auction. We want to thank our major Black Tie sponsor, Starview Foundation; the Diamond Collar sponsor, Kirby Nagelhout; our three Platinum Lead sponsors, Carrera Motors, Madsen Homes and Karnopp Petersen, LLP; the Wine sponsor for the 3rd year in a row, Maryhill Wineries and Cherie Brooks; the Auction Paw Paddle sponsor, Downtown Doggie; and Media Sponsor KOHD News. Together these corporate sponsors were responsible for raising $11,500 to care for the animals at HSCO. If you didn’t have a chance to come to this year’s event, be sure to mark your calendars for next year. You won’t want to be left out! Fall 2008 Creature Features INSIDE: Humane Society of Central Oregon uniting our community in the compassionate care of animals Changing the Lives of Animals — One Kibble at a Time M imi Ausland, a twelve year old girl from Bend, has set her sights on feeding millions of homeless animals in shelters across the nation. To begin her effort, Mimi started the website Freekibble.com in April of 2008 hoping to feed the animals cared for by the Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO). At first Mimi wanted to simply feed the homeless animals. But the initial concept of freekibble.com has grown for Mimi as she begins to see the bigger picture. Feeding the animals in shelters with food generated on freekibble.com not only fills the bellies of hungry animals, it also relieves the burden from shelter staff to find quality food for the animals in their care. Mimi hopes this gives shelter staff more time to find homes for the animals. With the downturn in the economy, it’s difficult for 2 • President’s Message 3 • Director’s Message, 4-10 • Donors 10 • Volunteer Profile Humane Society of Central Oregon 61170 27th Street Bend, OR 97702 541.382.3537 www.hsco.org Thrift Store 500 NE Greenwood Bend, OR 97701 541.388.3448 Call today to volunteer! 541.382.3537 Mimi Ausland celebrates a large donation of pet food. A record attendance of more than 200 guests was at the black tie event at the Seventh Mountain Resort on May 31st. They wined and dined and bid on fabulous items in the live auction including trips to Bali, Africa, La Quinta and South Carolina as well as several wine collectors CONTINUED ON PAGE 12 Dancing the night away at Tuxes ‘n Tails. 61170 SE 27th St. Bend, Oregon 97702 Humane Society of Central Oregon NONPROFIT US POSTAGE PAID BEND, OR. PERMIT NO. 473 From the President Where to Find Us Dear Friends, I wish George Bernard Shaw could visit HSCO today. He who wrote, “Youth is wasted on the young” might wish to take back those famous words. As you read through our newsletter, I don’t believe anyone would say that the young people of our community are wasting their youth. Certainly the animals that find their way to our shelter would like to have a few words with Mr. Shaw. I think they would point out how the efforts of these youth have provided food, supplies, toys, and even play equipment, to offer the greatest level of care possible to the nearly 4,000 animals in need that pass through HSCO’s doors every year. Without the help and concern of these young citizens, life would not be as comfortable for those who seek a second chance; even a walk outside or the opportunity to play and socialize with people make a positive difference for our animals, as we help them find a new life, in a new home. I hope you are as touched by these stories as I am. With all the negative news we see and hear each day, it is uplifting to know there are those in our community who see, with the purity of their vision, only the opportunities available, and act upon them. I think we can all learn a lesson from these ‘extraordinary youth’. So, I will give Mr. Shaw a second chance, and offer a quote from him that more accurately describes what is happening at HSCO, and in our community today: “You see things; and you say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say, ‘Why not?’” Please come and visit your shelter, and see how your support can make a difference in the lives of so many animals. Act on the opportunities -become inspired, become young! It can change your life for the better. I would like to highlight four extraordinary individuals for their time and dedication to HSCO and the animals we serve. These young people are four out of hundreds who had who have made significant contributions to our animals. My story begins Max & Mojo during the Christmas season. On Christmas Eve two young friends came in to visit the shelter with their parents and drop off some Christmas cheer for the animals. Greer and Gus McKinley had each opened up their own checking account and they were at the shelter to disburse their money saved to support the animals. Each check was pretty significant, Greer - $300 and Gus $200. Greer actually dedicated her dollars to go to special surgeries for animals. What a joy to watch them write their first checks all for their cause, our animals. Not long after that, I was called into one of our adoption rooms with a young girl and her father. Eleven year old Mimi Ausland, I would later find out, had been a consistent HSCO donor for a long while. She had a dream of feeding all of the animals that graced our shelter. Just in case you have not heard, look for the full story in this publication. What has captured my attention is the transformation of this young girl, who was shy and reserved, into this polished, spunky and confident youth talking on national TV for her cause…feeding all of the animals. We now come to Max Mead. This young man has been a volunteer with his mom walking dogs. At the end of the school year, Max came into my office to talk about his vision of fundraising over the summer to buy agility equipment for the animals at the shelter. I didn’t see much of Max over the summer (he did volunteer to help us at our microchip clinic) and I found out why. Max had been very busy with his grass roots fundraising activities for the agility equipment. He had been calling on neighbors and friends, anyone who would listen, asking to pull weeds, wash cars, spread bark -- anything to raise money for his project. I recently talked to Max and he has raised $500.00 this summer. My hat’s off to you Max! Throughout the year, many young people make sure the Humane Society is not forgotten by asking their birthday guests to make a donation. We have received some wonderful toys, needed kitty litter, food, money, and a lot of joy as a result of being chosen to be included in their celebration. I commend this generation of thoughtful and action oriented youth! Aloha, Pat Roden Executive Director In Loving Memory of ‘Squeek’ Smith - Offsite Adoptions Community Events Petsmart Emma Steel’s birthday party became a Humane Society event. Squeek enjoys her annual birthday party at William Smith Properties with her co-workers. Squeek was a constant companion of William Smith for 16 years. In 1992, when Smith was told that a kitten was orphaned due to the death of her mother on a ranch in Mitchell, OR, he brought the bottle-fed kitten back to Bend with him. All of Squeek’s co-workers at William Smith Properties helped take care of this tiny feline and grew to love her as she spent 16 years with them. It has been said that Squeek attends interviews and that you have to get her approval before you can work for William Smith Properties. Dixie Brown said that “Bill was by far her favorite person in the world.” 3 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS From February 1-July 31, 2008 Will Adams Roberta Adler Oren & Helen Aldrich Donna Allen Ameritel of Bend Bill Anderson Darci & James Anderson Karyn D. Mitch & Jacqueline Anagnost Volunteer Uses Love and Talent to Help Animals W hen Mia MacCollin moved from Boston, MA to Central Oregon in 2007, like many people, she came to the Humane Society of Central Oregon to find a new family member. Soon after adopting “Boston,” a black Labrador Retriever, she joined our volunteer program. Initially, Mia thought she would use the training experience she gained at an assistance dog organization to help HSCO’s canines. After seeing the consistent high volume of dogs, Mia realized she could not make the progress in a dog’s behavior that she envisioned. Mia soon offered to help with a volunteer job that had been empty for many years. The HSCO has many sponsored pet of the week advertisements as well as photos of adoptable animals on our website. Mia thought she could use her photographic talents to capture the animals in appealing photos that would help them find loving homes. Mia was right. When Mia’s photos became a part of HSCO’s website and advertisements, people came to visit with the animals they saw in the photo. Mia spends several hours each week taking the photographs. On top of the 10 photo session, Mia spends quality time with each animal she photographs. Mia says she feels “that all of us whose lives are enriched by the company of dogs we owe a great debt to the dogs that hit hard times. I wish our society was different and more respectful of animals. By showing how beautiful these dogs are, people might stop thinking of them as throwaways and strays, and think of them as individuals with personalities and potential.” Volunteering is an occupation that receives rewards that warms the heart. Mia says that the “greatest reward happens when someone comes in because they have seen one of my photos and says it motivated them to look at our dogs.” Like many volunteers, Mia finds that it can be hard to volunteer at the shelter because it’s so sad to see how people discard dogs. But like many, Mia finds the rewards greater, especially when she sees a homeless animal “go home with a great person, or even better when they come back in a month or six months and say that they have the best dog ever.” With heartfelt compassion, Mia says she can do it because she has her “own dogs to go home to and give a big hug, and tell them they will always, always, always have a loving home.” www.freekibble.com & freekibblekat.com generated: Dog Food lbs Dogs fed for 1 day Dogs fed for 1 month Cat Food in pounds Cats fed for 1 day Cats fed for 1 month July 9,250 19,000 633 3,250 26,000 867 August 10,882 21,764 725 4,410 35,280 1,176 *based on two cups of dog food per day per dog and a half cup of cat food per day per cat. FREE KIBBLE from page 1 some to feed their own companion animals. With a consistent supply of premium dog and cat food, Mimi hopes shelters can shift more food to their pet assistance programs for those having a difficult time feeding their pets. A lot has changed for the 11 year old that walked into the shelter this past February with her www.freekibble.com proposal that would benefit the 4,000 animals annually cared for by HSCO. Freekibble.com received support by local radio, television and print media. With each media exposure new people visited the site and donated more kibble by merely answering a trivia question. The story of a young girl wanting to feed homeless animals touched the hearts of many as it was covered by Margie Boule’ of the Oregonian, Zootoo.com, and the Humane Society of the United States. Mimi was also a guest on Animal Radio. The biggest impact was from national media coverage. The “National Enquirer’s” July 14 issue highlighted Mimi’s freekibble. com in their “Acts of Kindness” profile. The full-page spread included photos of Mimi at HSCO and a story on how she was making life better for homeless animals. The exposure created a spike in donated kibble numbers from about 8,000 a day to 13,000 a day. In July, Mimi was moved by a story about animals being the victims of foreclosures on the “NBC Nightly News.” She emailed NBC and thanked them for the story which assisted her in choosing her next shelter and opened Coming Soon! View Adoptable HSCO Pets On Demand, ON BendBroadband (available on COTV On Demand digital cable) Mimi Ausland and a feline friend. her eyes to bigger problems facing animals. Within a few days, reporter Chris Jansing of NBC Nightly News was at HSCO interviewing Mimi and her parents, Kelly Ausland and Brooke Smith. The “NBC Nightly News” story on freekibble.com on July 11 was followed the next morning with Mimi and her family appearing on the “Today Show.” The donated kibble totals skyrocketed from 25,000 a day to over 400,000 the night of the “NBC Nightly News” story, and over 800,000 after the “Today Show” airing. Kelly Ausland notes that “for a moment after the NBC Nightly News story, freekibble.com was the second fastest growing site on Google.” What’s next for the 12-year-old at the helm of freekibble.com? Mimi is headed to Los Angeles for a scheduled appearance on The Ellen (Degeneres) Show on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008. Most important to this compassionate young girl is simply feeding the animals in shelters while they wait for their forever home. Freekibble.com has generated 2,175 lbs of dog food, and 550 lbs of cat food for the Humane Society of Central Oregon. The delivery of food in August will include seven more shelters across the nation plus a few near Kansas City, MO. (Three Dog Bakery donated 5,000 additional pounds for Kansas City shelters). Mimi’s efforts have been recognized by the Humane Society of the United States, and they are making a donation to a shelter of her choice. HSCO has been graciously designated by this ambitious and inspiring young lady to receive the donation. For those who have been playing ‘bow-wow trivia’ and ‘meow trivia’ please continue playing because every kibble counts. For those who have not visited freekibble.com or freekibblekat.com, take a moment to find out how easy it is to help feed homeless animals with just a click of the mouse. 11
