Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
The Harveys Outdoor Concert
Series has once again brought a
great variety of music to enjoy this
year. The Journey, Pat Benatar,
Loverboy show had a truckload
of hits that you still hear on the
radio all the time. It was fun going
down memory lane with those bands
that still sound great. Neil Young
and Crazy Horse had a mix of old
and new in their song list. From
wild feedback, to new music from
their new record “Americana,’ with
American classics like, “She’ll Be
Coming ‘Round the Mountain,” and
the bands famous hit, “Cinnamon
Girl,” Young and Crazy Horse were
rocking. It was fun to hear, “Hey Hey,
My My” also as Neil was ripping it up
on guitar with his classic vocals. Joe
Cocker and Huey Lewis and the
News, gave a double-bill show with
a lot of excitement. Huey is a great
frontman on vocals, harmonica, and
talking with the crowd. These guys
have a lot of hits from the 80’s that
still sound fresh today. From “The
Heart of Rock & Roll” to “Workin’
for a Livin,’ this was a high-energy
show. Cocker had a talented band
that backed his hits like, “The Letter,”
Unchain My Heart,” With a Little
Help From My Friends,” “ You are
So Beautiful,” and many others. Joe
can take another bands song and
make it his own. From Woodstock to
Tahoe, he has performed all over the
world. We are lucky to have so many
talented artists playing the Outdoor
Arena at Harveys each year.
MontBleu with their new
Outdoor Event Center is an
impressive addition to the live venue
scene in Tahoe. Reggae star Jimmy
Cliff along with six acts, delighted
everyone for the last show of the
summer. Eph Bee Cee from Reno
was really cool to hear. It was a great
show with a variety of musicians.
Look for more shows at the Outdoor
Event Center next year. MontBleu
has Matisyahu and Dirty Heads in
the showroom September 27. This
will be a party atmosphere. Opal
Nightclub has a lot of drink specials,
DJ’s, sexy Go-Go girls and Body
Painting, to keep you smiling.
Harrah’s South Shore Room
has The B-52’s September 8. This
will be a dance party atmosphere
with hits like, “Love Shack,” “Rock
Lobster,” “Good Stuff,” and many
others from this new wave rock
band. Frontman Fred Schneider
and the girls always put on a highenergy show. The Blues Broads
play September 15, Canned Heat
is September 22, Penn & Teller
September 28 and Tommy Castro’s
Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue
is September 29. Penn & Teller
have been mixing their illusions and
comedy since the late 70’s. I love this
show. They have clever pranks, gory
tricks, card tricks, the famous bullet
catch illusion and many routines that
tell a story. They have headlined at
the Rio in Las Vegas for the past 11
years. They have appeared on many
television shows, including their own
shows. They have books that are
fun and this duo will entertain you.
Teller doesn’t speak in the act, but
when l met them, it was cool to have
him talk.
Legendary comedian Phyllis
Diller died at age 95. She paved the
way for many female comics today.
Diller debuted at the Purple Onion
in San Francisco in 1955 and never
looked back. With her outrageous
wigs, metallic dresses, go-go boots,
long cigarette holder and trademark
cackle laugh, and this housewife was
really funny with one-liners. She told
me Bob Hope really liked her when
l talked to her in the late 90’s. She
played Tahoe and Reno throughout
the years. Women comics weren’t
really accepted by the audiences
or the other male comics, it was
a men’s club she said, back then
in the early days. She was also
the first celebrity to acknowledge
and publicize the fact that she had
plastic surgery, and those jokes were
funny. Very accomplished on piano,
she performed with 100 symphony
orchestras across the country form
1971 – 1981. She wrote books,
5 comedy albums, played on
Broadway, acted in movies and TV
specials. She loved to make fun of
herself with jokes like, “I once wore
a peak-a-boo blouse, people would
peak and then they’d boo!” “I never
made Who’s Who, but I’m featured
in What’s That?” Phyllis retired from
stand up in 2002.
Catch a boat cruise, outdoor
dining, laughs at the Improv at
Harveys, Illusion Fusion at the
Horizon, Cabo Wabo fun. Vex
Nightclub with sexy Go-Go girls and
amazing aerial shows. The Beacon
Bar & Grill has outdoor Live Music.

Authentic Cantonese Restaurant a Hit at Harrah's
Gi Fu Loh brings a “Gathering of
Luck” to Lake Tahoe
Gi Fu Loh, Lake Tahoe’s truly
authentic
Cantonese
restaurant,
celebrates five years of delicious dining
and outstanding service at Harrah’s
Casino Resort. Translated as a “gathering
of luck,” Gi Fu Loh offers an intriguing,
diverse and delectable menu featuring
Cantonese cuisine (along with other Asian
specialties), which will make satisfied
diners feel lucky indeed.
“The menu raises the notion of
Cantonese cuisine to levels of authenticity
and flavor far beyond what most diners
have ever experienced,” raved one
reviewer in the Sacramento Bee. “We
particularly relished the lobster fried rice,
prawns in sweet and sour sauce, and
meltingly tender filet mignon smothered in
zingy ‘Beijing sauce.’ But when a superblooking whole Peking duck was delivered
to the booth next to ours, I realized I’d misordered.”
The Cantonese-style of Chinese
cooking is from the southern part of
China, the province of Canton, which is
distinguished by many rivers and lakes
and its proximity to the South China
Sea. Naturally, seafood is a hallmark of
Cantonese food, which includes a variety
of fish, lobster, crab, shrimp and other
delicacies from the deep.
“Cantonese cuisine does not need
to use too much salt, sugar and spices to
enhance the taste, only special spices to
bring out the natural flavor,” says Gi Fu
Loh head chef, Mr. Hung Wong. “As far
as cooking method, our customers prefer
steamed, pan fried and broiled, versus
deep fried. Cantonese cuisine is light,
healthy and tasty.”
Chef Wong began his career in Hong
Kong at age 18. In 1977, he became Head
Chef at the famed Lisbon Hotel & Casino in
Macau. He later became Executive Chef
at the Riverside Plaza Hotel in Hong Kong
and, in 1989, immigrated to the United
States where he was executive chef at
several Chinese restaurants in Southern
California. He is a vice president of the
American Chinese Restaurant Association
and vice president and executive chef of
the American Chinese Chef’s Association.
Gi Fu Loh’s menu also includes
a wide selection of authentic noodle
soups, along with delicious pork, beef,
duck, chicken and vegetarian entrees,
appetizers, and side dishes, prepared
in a mouth-watering, Cantonese style.
Special rice dishes, tea services, unique
desserts and an intriguing wine list round
out a comprehensive menu.
Soups and consommés are a
specialty of Cantonese cuisine and
Gi Fu Loh offers the best, including:
Yee Fu Noodle with Crabmeat;
Wild Mushroom; Wonton Noodle;
Double Boiled Chicken Soup with
Fish Maw; Hot & Sour Soup; Wor
Wonton Soup; and Lake Tahoe
Minced Beef Soup, among others.
A choice of appetizers features
Honey Barbequed Pork; Chilled
Cucumber; Pan Fried Pot Stickers;
and Crispy Shrimp Egg Rolls.
Rice and vegetable dishes
feature Lobster Fried Rice;
Cantonese Style Shredded Pork
Chow Mein; Braised Vermicelli with
Minced Beef & Pickled Cabbage; Gi Fu
Loh Special Fried Rice; Beef Chow Fun
with Soya Sauce; and Gingko Nut & Lily
Bulb Congee.
Among the chef’s specialties are:
Filet Mignon with Beijing Sauce; Peking
Duck; Braised Tofu with Tender Greens;
Honey Walnut Prawns with Mango
Flavor; Minced Squab in Lettuce; Sautéed
Chicken & Scallion with Black Bean Sauce;
Whole Mexican or African Abalone; Crispy
Pan Fried Whole Dover Sole; and Peking
Pork Chop.
Taste tempting desserts at Gi Fu Loh
include: Mango Pudding; Tapioca with
Honey Dew Melon; Green Tea Crème
Brulée; and a special Cut Cake of the Day.
From exotic dishes such as Bird’s Nest
Soup and Spicy Jelly Fish & Seaweed,
to more familiar fare including Kung Pao
Chicken and Mongolian Beef, Gi Fu Loh
is offers delicious dishes guaranteed to
please every palate.
Gi Fu Loh, located just off the casino
floor on the second floor of Harrah’s Lake
Tahoe, is open nightly for dinner, except
Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning
at 5:30 p.m. For additional information
and Gi Fu Loh restaurant reservations,
please call: 775-586-6668. For hotel

What's Going On - Harrah's & Harveys - September
Why does summer always go by
so quickly? Seems like only yesterday
we were gearing-up for the 2012 Lake
Tahoe Summer Concert Series at
Harveys Outdoor Arena, and now we’re
just capping off our most popular and
successful series ever with a careerspanning performance by Sammy Hagar
The Red Rocker on Labor Day weekend.
So now it’s time for the “Local’s Summer:”
still great weather for hiking and biking,
swimming and boating, and enjoying
some great shows in the South Shore
Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Yes,
the legendary showroom is ready with a
solidly entertaining and diverse lineup of
stellar stars for September and beyond.
A sure way to get the SSR concert
series off to a roaring start is with the
incomparable party band, The B-52’s,
Sept. 8. Whether you’re jonesing for
a little time in the “Love Shack” or just
feeling like a Tahoe “Rock Lobster,” The
B-52’s are guaranteed to get your blood
pumping and your feet movin’. This is
one dance show you do not want to miss.
On Sept. 15, The Blues Broads
return to Harrah’s following their stunning
debut at Harrah’s last fall. Soulful blues
and jazz greats Dorothy Morrison,
Tracy Nelson, Annie Sampson,
Angela Strehli and phenomenal, multiinstrumentalist Deanna Bogart comprise
the group. Lake Tahoe blues continues
with the one-and-only Canned Heat,
Sept. 22.
Led by the extraordinary
guitarist Harvey Mandel and original
members Adolpho “Fito” de la Parra
and Larry “The Mole” Taylor, Canned
Heat is the band that brought boogiebased blues into the mainstream and
helped revitalize the career of blues
maestro John Lee Hooker. This one will
be a real, live roof-popper!
On a Friday night, Sept. 28, Penn
& Teller return to the scene of their
many crimes with another mind-boggling
display of comedy, horror, mayhem and,
of course, magic in a special 9 p.m. show.
September entertainment wraps-up
with a big, bluesy finish when Tommy
Castro and his Legendary Rhythm &
Blues Revue returns with an all-new lineup on Saturday night, Sept. 29. This
time around, Tommy brings his band The
Painkillers, along with some smokin’
sets by guitarists Chris Cain, Debbie
Davies and award winning sax man
Terry Hanck.
High-energy
entertainment
continues on Oct. 6 when “Surreal Neil”
and his band Super Diamond channel
and transform the music of Neil Diamond
in one of Lake Tahoe’s most popular
shows.
Other entertaining news includes
the upcoming, third annual Lake Tahoe
Food & Wine Festival at Harrah’s and
Harveys, Oct. 5 – 7. “Chopped” champion
Michael Gowland, celebrity chef Nathan
Lyon and Chef Mark Estee of Campo
are featured during the popular threeday affair. In addition to multiple wine
and spirits tastings, and themed dining
experiences, the Festival’s main event
is Saturday’s Epicurean Expo – Beyond
the Fork “An Affair of the Senses” at
Harrah’s Special Events Center.
For
more information and tickets, go to www.
harrahs.com/ltfoodandwine.
Across the street at Harveys
Cabaret, the venerable Improv Comedy
Club has a great line-up for laughter
during September. On Sept. 5, Dennis
Regan and Marc Price kick of the month,
playing through Sept. 9, followed by
popular Bay Area comic Mark Pitta and
Alex Koll, Sept. 12 – 16. Tahoe favorite
and king of the deadpan delivery Rocky
LaPorte brings his quietly riotous humor
to the stage Sept. 19 – 23, with Ron
Morey taking the middle spot. Scott
Record returns to the Improv stage Sept.
John Packer
26 – 30, with the hilarious Marianne Sierk
on the bill as well. The laughs keep on
coming in October with hot young comics
Owen Benjamin and Frances Dilorinzo
kicking off the month, Oct. 3 – 7. The
ubiquitous Howie Nave is the host and
emcee for The Improv, which plays Wed.
– Fri. and Sun. at 9 p.m. and 8:30 and
10:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
Tickets for both the South
Shore Room and Harveys Cabaret
are available through Ticketmaster
outlets, www.Ticketmaster.com,
www.
SouthShoreRoom.com or at the Box
Offices.
Area Bartenders Create Cocktails For a Cause
Mixologists [bartenders] will create
delicious winter cocktail concoctions,
while adding their own enticing
flare during the third annual Barton
Foundation
“Signature”
Cocktail
Contest, Thursday, Sept. 13 from 5:30 to
8 p.m. at Riva Grill.
The contest, sponsored by Riva Grill
and Tahoe Blue Vodka, is the official “kick
off” to the annual Festival of Trees &
Lights, held November 29 – December 2,
at Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa.
Open to attendees 21 years-of-age
and older, the contest will feature local
bartenders from Cantina, Edgewood
Tahoe, Embassy Suites, Heavenly,
Lakeside Inn, LewMar Nels, MontBleu,
Naked Fish and Riva Grill.
Attendees can expect delicious
appetizers from Riva Grill, fabulous live
music by Jesse Kalin, and emcee Dreu
Murin to keep the party going. This year,
everybody gets a vote for "Best Cocktail,"
and be sure to cast your “dollars” for
"Most Congenial Bartender."
The proceeds from this year’s
Cocktail Contest and the Festival of
Trees & Lights will allow Barton to
evaluate, assess and treat more trauma
patients, who might otherwise be flown
to a designated trauma center outside
the area. The $200,000 initiative is an
onerous process – it will take more than a
year of consultation, oversight, education
and reporting to achieve this designation,
but the benefit to the community and to
those who travel here far outweigh the
costs.
Last year's event drew 150
attendees and grossed more than
$5,400, a 35 percent increase from 2010
for the expansion and renovation of the
Barton Community Clinic, now under
construction.
Tickets are $25 through Sept. 12 and
$30 at the door. They can be purchased
online at festivaloftreeslaketahoe.com or
call (530) 543-5909.
Inaugural Lake Tahoe Lifestyle Festival
Many of us take advantage of all
Lake Tahoe has to offer, including hiking,
biking, camping, skiing and much more,
but I have come across several members
of our community recently who feel as
though they don’t know how to exactly go
about enjoying these things. So, at Barton
Health, we asked ourselves … what are
things South Lake Tahoe has to offer that
people could enjoy more? What kind of
basic wellness check-ups and educational
opportunities could we provide? Most of
all, how could we enhance the lives of our
community? So, we’ve [Barton Health]
partnered up with the City of South Lake
Tahoe and combined our Family Health
Day with the City’s Bijou Bash creating
the inaugural Lake Tahoe Lifestyle
Festival, Saturday, September 8 from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Filled with health, recreation and fun,
the festival will provide attendees free
healthcare assessments and screenings,
along with interactive opportunities for the
entire family. Designed for all ages and
abilities, it’s an opportunity for residents
of South Lake to enjoy a day full of fun
– together! Our goal is to provide a free
day of interactive activities as well as
teach the community and visitors alike
how to simply improve their lifestyles.
Our hope is that The Lake Tahoe Lifestyle
Festival will encourage attendees to get
moving (ride their bikes to the festival
and enjoy free valet), get educated (learn
about wilderness appreciation) and to
get inspired (about all things Tahoe).
Be ready to try something new! We will
have healthful foods, mountain bike
tours, a nature appreciation walk, yoga
and fitness moves, tumbling for kids, a
balance bike obstacle course, sit-down
crafts and face painting. And, BluGo will
be providing free bus rides all day on
route 53, located on the California side
of South Lake Tahoe — making stops at
Lake Tahoe Community College and the
South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
Thanks to our sponsors for helping
make this event a reality: Southwest
Gas, Lake Tahoe News, Sierra-AtTahoe and the Tahoe Daily Tribune. All
proceeds from our vendors and sponsors
are designated to help underprivileged
children in support of The City of
South Lake Tahoe’s Recreation Youth
Scholarship Fund. For more information
on the event, please contact Leanne
Wagoner at (530) 543-5537 or Sue
McLaughlin at (530) 543-5615. You can
also visit the event Website at www.
cityofslt.us/ltlifestylefestival.
Fly Fishing
We made it through the toughest time
of the year which has been the month of
August! The low flows and the heat pretty
much made the fishing quite tough but as
things cool and they already have started
to, the fishing pretty much everywhere will
improve. Look for the Big Bugs to start
or continue in some cases as well as the
tiny stuff.
East
Carson
River
above
Hangman’s Bridge. We are coming into
the best time of the year for fishing the
EC. The hatches are filling in, the fish
are here and the temps are better. Look
for fish to be eating Tricos, Hoppers and
Fall Caddis!
The catch and release section below
Hangman’s Bridge - There is a great Trico
hatch but the fish are waiting for the water
and their gills to clear before focusing on
it. Throw big stuff that is going to show in
the poor vis. Also, streamers are working
a little, too.
West Carson River
The West Carson River is tough but
fishable. Stealth is the key with fish
hiding during the midday hours.
The
river has been stocked, fish are being
caught Nymphing: S J worms, Stoneflies
and Copper Johns and on Streamers:
White, Black Buggers, White Muddy
Buddies. Fish the sections around the
bridges which are where the fish will be
congregating after being dumped from
a truck! The West Carson Fish will look
up at Hoppers, small Drakes and PMD
patterns on the surface so try some
dries, too. PMD hatches have been in
the early morning and late evening. Fish
the pocket water to get away from other
anglers. It fishes great with just another
10 CFS in it, watch for those days on the
USGS web site.
East Walker River - CA section:
The “mile” has cooled down a little so
the fishing has improved. The menu
has gone back to 20s and 22s to keep
it interesting. Hoppers will catch fish as
well. There is a caddis hatch in the eves
and even if you do not see rises, the fish
will still eat them. Nevada section: The
Rosachi ranch is fishing well on most
days except on warm afternoons. Try
throwing hoppers, streamers and small
nymphs. As the Month cools the fishing
will improve dramatically!
Little Truckee River
Nothing has really changed here. It varies
by day. Crowded as usual as the flows
on the BT are intimidating. Fishing with
dries to very selective trout is what is up.
They are eating PMDs, beetles, ants,
etc. Bring your A game and have fun
being challenged. Nymphing is extremely
mossy! Watch for crowds!
Truckee River (Ca) - Above the
267 Bridge. There is a lot of water but
the caddis and mayfly hatches in the
evenings should bring fish to the surface
in the slower sections. Fish early for now
but as the Fall comes closer the temps
will drop and the fishing will become good
all day. Hoppers are moving!
Year round section below 267.
Hopper dropper rigs are working and the
fishing is starting to extend beyond the
normal early shut off. Some days are
on fire and some are tough. The water
temps are holding but finding accessible
fish can be tough. Fish with small mayfly
nymphs, pheasant tails, caddis pupae
and smaller streamers. The pocket water
is fishable, but very interesting wading
still. Fish Early for now!
Truckee River (NV)
Flows on the Truckee in Nevada are
good. It should start fishing all day as the
temps drop. Afternoons and evenings
have been producing fish with Crawdad
patterns and small nymphs.
Guides Available call (530-5418208). Learn it and Love it! We will be
Victor Babbit
doing a limited amount of float trips on
the Truckee this Summer, please call for
details.
Tahoe Area Stillwaters - Indian
Creek Reservoir. There are still plenty
of fish in Indian Creek. As the temps drop
this Fall the fishing will turn on again and
should fish most of the day long! Buggers
in Black, Olive and or Brown, Damsels,
Blood Midges and Calibaetis as well. Fish
in the channels among the weed beds.
Caples Lake. There is a great midge
hatch in the mornings and some nice
fish eating them on some days, just not
everyday. Sinking lines are working the
best in and around rocky areas. Look
for the inlet area to fish well as well as a
few spots around the dams. Streamers,
Streamers and more Streamers. A small
nymph or lake nymph trailer will increase
your odds. Rent a boat at Caples Lake
Resort for a fun experience and fish the
Emigrant Bay area. Fish will also eat the
Big Terrestrial especially with rubber legs!
Fish the middle of the day for good sight
fishing just don’t expect numerous fish but
when you do see one it is usually big!
Red Lake. Red is fishing okay with
periods of bite during the day and better
without a gale force wind. An intermediate
line with a Woolly Bugger and small
nymph trailer is your best bet. You can
also do slow wind drifts with an indicator
on Red and be productive.
Get out and fish!

COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN
School is back in session, Labor Day weekend over,
the beginning of shoulder season, summer’s history and
then we start those Pray for Snow parties, right? Did I
get it all in the correct order? Add this to the ‘You know
you’re a local if….” category as I already stacked my two
cords of pine in July with the oak happening in a couple
of weeks. I’m really looking forward to being a ‘Leafer’ as
the colors start to change echoing the beginning of the
fall season and then transitioning into the colder season
which is just around the corner. Love the changing of the
seasons because there’s nothing like the changing of a
season to remind one where they are on the timeline of
life.
First off: yes, Dennis Reagan’s brother is Brian and
yes, his brother was the inspiration for going into the
‘other’ family business: that of stand up comedy. Their
father had an asphalt company in Florida called Tars
& Stripes. But Dennis realized he really wasn’t cut out
for this line of work and after seeing his older brother
making a name for himself Dennis thought, “Why not?”
Fortunately Dennis didn’t have to work too long in the
family business before branching out on his own. “I did
a lot of things before the asphalt business. I was doing it
when I started doing comedy so it was an easy transition
because I hated that asphalt business” said Dennis in
a recent interview. Having a brother already in the
business did help Dennis along the way but don’t even
try to compare the two brothers. “Few comedians, Dennis
says, could stand up to being measured against Brian.
Not too many comics are having the success that Brian’s
having,” he says. Dennis has opened for his brother and
Ray Romano in addition to writing for the Kevin James
comedy “The King of Queens,” from its sixth season to
its ninth and final season. Dennis has done dozens of
both Letterman and Leno appearances, not to mention
specials on Comedy Central and other networks. I’m
pretty psyched that Dennis is performing up here for the
first time. Also making his debut is Sammy Obeid so
consider the week of Sept 5th through the 9th ‘NewbieTo-The-Lake’ week.
Mark Pitta is back! Very fortunate having him up
here. I’ve known him for over 25 years and remember
seeing him as he was starting to make a name for himself
in the bay area. Mark came up the same time as Robin
Williams, Kevin Pollack, Bob Sarlatte and Dana Carvey
(to name but a mere few). Pitta has appeared on “The
Tonight Show,” “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “Mad About
You,” Fox’s “Totally Hidden Video,” “Comedy Central”
and many others. When he came back to the City by the
Bay he was tapped as the entertainment reporter for the
fledgling FOX affiliate, KTVU Channel 2 (seen here on
channel 11 on cable). He did that for a while until he got
fed up with having to get up weekdays at 4am (oh man
can I relate to that). Despite all of his accomplishments
I think his biggest happens every Tuesday night at
The Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. That’s right.
Tuesday nights it’s comedy night with ‘Pitta & Friends’
and every Tuesday that theater is packed. Packed with
some of the biggest names in showbiz. I know because
on August 7th I worked with Bob Zany and oh yeah,
Robin Williams! What one of the most memorable nights
ever. Not bad let me tell ya!
Mark has made a great name for himself and has
toured with so many great acts that include Paul Anka,
Howie Mandel and Dana Carvey and occasionally
would sit in with the famed improvisational group,
The Groundlings when he has any time. Second only
to comedy Mark’s greatest passion is baseball and
particularly the San Francisco Giants. Come down
and check out Pitta along with Alex Koll the week of
September 12th through the 16th.
I don’t need to tell you much I love having Rocky
LaPorte up here. Rocky (who is originally from Chicago)
is hands down one of the most popular acts ever
booked in our room. Rocky has fans from all walks of life
including that of comedian/actor Tim Allen. His daughter
told her dad that Rocky was her favorite comic too. It’s
true though because Tim cast Rocky in several of his
movies including the Disney remake of “The Shaggy
Dog” and Tim’s movie, “Crazy On the Outside” which
co-starred Sigourney Weaver, Ray Liotta and Kelsey
Grammer (and was Allen’s directorial debut). Rocky
was also part of the ensemble comedy special, “The
Godfathers of Comedy”on that aired on Showtime
earlier this year. Not bad for a guy who used to be a
truck driver on Chicago’s notorious South Side huh?
Rocky started out doing open mic nights around
the Chicago area eventually entering himself
into comedy competitions and started garnering
quite a following not just in Chicago but outside
the state as other comics started talking about
this new guy everyone should check out. After
winning The Johnnie Walker National Comedy
Competition (beating out over 1100 contestants
in 10 cities) ‘Rock’ started making television
appearances on “Cheers,” “Pat Sajak,” “Comic
Strip Live” before getting a shot at his own pilot
on CBS called, “The Rocky Laporte Show”
which you can see the on YouTube even though
it didn’t get picked up. At the Las Vegas Comedy
Festival Rocky was awarded “Best Male Club
Comedian of the Year “ presented by George
Wallace and Andy Kindler. And, I remember
in a poll taken from comedy clubs around the
country (including ours here in Tahoe) Rocky
was voted as one of their favorites as best club
comic. When not headlining clubs and theaters
around the country he’s been asked to be the
opener for such great acts as Louie Anderson,
Garry Shandling, Drew Carey, Tim Allen, Hootie
and the Blowfish and the Righteous Brothers
just to name a few. Come on down the week
of September 19th through the 23rd and be
prepared to laugh like crazy!
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/manager
of The Improv @ Harveys every Wednesday
through Sunday and also hosts his own
morning show (“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on
93.9 KRLT radio Monday through Friday from
6 to 10am. He’s also on Lake Tahoe Television
doing interviews with comedians and film
reviews during the segment called, “Nave’s
Raves.”
Entertainment & Events
Hard to believe the summer concert
season has come and gone. From the
tremendous success of the 1st Lake Tahoe
Reggae Festival, to Sublime w/ Rome and
Cypress Hill, to The All‐American Rejects,
and the legendary Jimmy Cliff. We loved
the outdoor venue and can't wait to start
working on our line‐up for next season.
Matisyahu w/ The Dirty Heads
is confirmed September 27, along with
special guest Pacific Dub. Since first
emerging on the international stage
in 2005, Matisyahu has established a
reputation for following his muse—from
the stripped‐down roots reggae of the
gold‐certified Live at Stubb’s to the trippy
ministrations of Youth to the polished pop
eclecticism of Light. Then, in 2010, he
returned to the venerable Austin venue
that introduced him for Live at Stubb’s
II, demonstrating that all those travels
had somehow only strengthened his
connection to his musical bedrock. It was
a whirlwind half‐decade journey, one that
earned Matisyahu a place in pop culture
at large.
And it was only the beginning…..
Now based with his family in Los Angeles,
Matisyahu blasts off yet again with Spark
Seeker, a bold new studio album that finds
the one‐of‐a‐kind vocalist and songwriter
exploring uncharted territory with help
from an expansive cast of collaborators.
“My musical tastes are all over the board,”
he says in reference to a record that mixes
ancient traditional sounds with futuristic
electro beats, rapping with singing, songs
of the spirit with songs of the body. “And,
besides, my music has never been about
the outer garment. It’s about searching
out inspiration wherever it lies. This album
is about seeking that spark within.”
Outer garments, of course, long
defined Matisyahu in the eyes of many.
“I was the Hasidic reggae superstar,”
he says with a knowing laugh. So when
Matisyahu took to Twitter late last year to
post a picture of himself with his new look,
he did it with a certain amount of relief. “It
just felt good to sort of restart everything,”
he says, adding that the transformation
actualized one of the central themes of
Spark Seeker: the impermanence of the
physical form. “The spark seeker digs
for truth and meaning and is willing to let
go of everything to find it. He’s honest
and authentic with himself and lives life
from the inside out. He creates music
from the depths and doesn’t worry about
what category it or he fits into.” “We live
in a world where people tend to think in
extremes and categorize with ultimate
statements,” Matisyahu says. “While it’s
true that at one point it would’ve been
pretty accurate to describe me as Hasidic
reggae, for most of my career my music
has been a blend, a mixture.”
For Spark Seeker - not just a collection
of random tracks, but a complete piece of
work made with one producer - Matisyahu
spent a year recording with Koool Kojak
(Nicki Minaj, Travis Barker, Ke$ha) at the
latter’s home studio in L.A. Then the pair
went to Israel with an open slate. “We
booked a studio there and invited various
friends and musicians—including Zohar
Fresco, Daniel Zamir, Ravid Kahalani
and rapper Shyne - to come and simply
play music,” Matisyahu says. “We began
to blend all of this live instrumentation to
create a unique record, made by multi‐
faceted human beings who have many
sides and many sources of inspiration.”
The result reflects that wide array
of voices and experiences. In the hard‐
hitting “Warrior” Matisyahu describes
feelings of frustration and desperation,
while lead single “Sunshine” rides what
might be the most uplifting groove in
his catalog; elsewhere, “Searchin’”
pairs a gritty digital‐dancehall beat with
chanted lyrics and “I Believe in Love”
exemplifies the album’s deep melodic
streak. Throughout Spark Seeker you
can hear Matisyahu embodying the
album’s title—and embracing its humble
promise. The album has a depth to it as
well as a lightness, which alludes to the
most essential theme of the record - that
everything in life, especially music, exists
in mixtures and blends. “Things are not as
black and white as we would like to think.
Not everything can be oversimplified,"
says Matisyahu. “This is definitely pushing
the boundaries of what I’ve done before,”
he acknowledges. “It’s a new kind of
record for me.” At this point we’d expect
nothing less.
On tour with Matisyahu is The
Dirty Heads, a Reggae rock band from
Southern California with a melodic style
that includes hip hop and punk genres.
Their debut album, Any Port in a Storm,
was released on September 23, 2008,
by Executive Music Group. The group
is perhaps one of the most prominent
groups in a sub‐genre of reggae, which
is heavily influenced by the original
incarnation of Sublime. The group first
came into prominence within the rock/
reggae scene when their song "Ring the
Alarm" was chosen as the first song on
the very first Pier Sampler, an offering
of free songs that is available for a
limited time four times yearly. The band
started out touring heavily in California,
Arizona, and some parts of Mexico before
it became a national touring act. The
Dirty Heads have toured the U.S. multiple
times with bands such as O.A.R., 311,
Pepper, Kottonmouth Kings, Unwritten
Laand Sublime with Rome. The band has
also been part of marketing campaigns
for Etnies Jeans, Rag Dynasty Shirts
and Vestal Watches. The Dirty Heads
were among the first bands featured
on YouTube's "RAWsession". The set
included a cover of Coldplay’s "Viva La
Vida”.
Opening the show is Pacific Dub,
one of the youngest and newest bands
to solidify themselves as professionals
within the Reggae‐Rock scene.
Doors open at 7:00p, show starts at
8:00p. Tickets are $39.50, and available
