Mechanotransduction and the Interstitium: The World in Between
Convocation 2013 will bring together experts in many interrelated fields to further evaluate the structure-function
relationship. It will marry concepts and perspectives that have been part of osteopathic medicine since the days of A.T. Still
with those at the cutting-edge. At the core, participants will investigate how the gross physical interface of clinician and patient
is used not only to affect change at that level, but how this affects the patient on many levels. The goal is for participants to
understand this integration from the cell to the whole person, and to improve their ability to help their patients find health.

Evening with the FAAOs:
Biomechanical Forces: A Discussion of Development and Pathology
This evening program will include insights from several FAAOs on the relationship of structure and function in the
human form. It will begin with a review of the forces that begin in the embryo and develop into the foundations of adult
structures. Next, several perspectives on mechanical models will be presented to illustrate the palpatory experience in
osteopathic practice. Finally, the panel will have an open dialogue with the audience about their experiences and thoughts
on diagnosing altered mechanics and incorporating osteopathic principles to interface with the biologic system of a patient.

Please Note: Participants are responsible for ensuring they
scan their badge in order to verify their attedance at each
session eligible for CME credit.
Who May Attend?
The primary educational objective of the AAO is to provide
programs aimed to improve understanding of philosophy and
diagnostic/manipulative skills for AAO members, DOs who are
not AAO members, individuals who are licensed for the unlimited
scope and practice of medicine, and those in programs leading to
such licensure.
Another educational objective of the AAO is to provide programs
aimed to improve understanding of manual techniques for licensed
health care professionals within their respective scopes of practice.
Enrollment in a class or classes is not a substitute for completion
of education and training in a college of osteopathic medicine, and
simply taking a course or courses in manual techniques does not
provide the necessary training and skills to practice osteopathic
manipulative treatment and/or osteopathic manipulative medicine.
Refund Policy
1.All cancellations must be received in writing by February 20,
2013.
2.An administrative fee of 20 percent of the total registration fee
will be charged for all cancellations made prior to February 20,
2013.
3. Any registrant who fails to appear for an AAO program can
transfer up to 50 percent of their registration fee to another
AAO educational program to be held within the next 12
months if a written and signed explanation is received at the
AAO office within 10 days of the scheduled course he/she was
unable to attend. All other cancellations will receive no refund
or transfer of registration fees.
4. Meal tickets are non-refundable. There is no discount for not
attending pre-paid food functions.

Mentor and Protégé: Updated Muscle
Energy Techniques for O-A and A-A

Description: This workshop will present reliable
diagnosis and treatment for the occipito-atlantal
joints and the atlanto-axial joints. The participant
will be able to conduct segmental dysfunctions with
updated Muscle Energy Procedures.
B1/B2: Some of What I Learned from My Mentor,
Sara E. (Sally) Sutton, DO, FAAO; Dr. Schuster
Description: Muscle Energy is taught as a basic,
beginner technique. However, it was not meant as
such. When Fred Mitchell, Sr., DO, FAAO, initially tried
to teach it, people failed to understand it. Finally,
he offered it to a small group of six students, held at the
house of Sara (Sally) Sutton, DO, FAAO. This program is
an opportunity to see and learn Muscle Energy as it was
originally meant to be done.
C1/C2: The Interface Between the Fascial System
and the Fluid System - The Junctional Areas
Dr. Buser
Description: The importance of the spinal
transitional areas in the respiratory-circulatory
model of care, with treatment techniques for
junctional areas and associated diaphragms, will be
discussed in this workshop.
D1/D2: Breathing and Mechanotransduction; Dr. Ettlinger
Description: This workshop will explore the use
of respiration in both diagnosis and treatment.
Participants will learn to sense respiratory motion in
various parts of the body, and use this intrinsic motion
to diagnosis somatic dysfunction. Respirator assistance for
treatment will be discussed and applied to the treatment of
somatic dysfunction of the spine and extremities.
E1/E2: Interface of the Biomechanical, Bioenergetic,
and Biological in the Fascia; Dr. O’Connell
Description: The focus of this workshop will be
diagnosing and treating in the fascia using the
concepts of a portal of entry, intelligent palpation
and the confluence of external and internal events
accessible in the fascia. Participants will identify somatic
dysfunction within the fascia and follow patterns produced

through mechanotransduction. Identify and access portals
of entry into the fascial continuum and apply bioenergetic
principles to fascial release (bioelectric activation and
release). Participants will learn to apply fascial release
techniques to identified somatic dysfunction and to aid in
diagnosing macro to micro dysfunction.
F1/F2: Osteopathy Across the Ponds; Dr. Turner
and Dr. Fendall
Description: The presenters will share "Jewels from
our Teachers" - how things that have been shown to
us have given us inspiration and a place to work from.
It will explore how our osteopathic practices have
evolved from the insights shared from many diverse teachers,
including our patients. It will discuss palpation, centring,
contact and accessing therapeutic change.
G1/G2: Mentor and Protégé: Dr. Kappler's Favorite
Techniques - Chicago Style; Dr. Kappler and
Dr. Habenicht
Description: Dr. Kappler will present many of his
favorite techniques including HVLA, fascial and
indirect balancing. Participants will be able to
demonstrate new HVLA techniques and new fascial
and indirect balancing techniques.

B3/B4: Some Things I Learned From My Mentor, Herbert C. Miller, DO, FAAO
Dr. Hagopian
Description: Although the principles of Osteopathy
seem simple, their application can be elusive. When
Dr. Miller demonstrated, confusion would yield
to the clarity and precision of his work. Attentive
students could more easily feel the anatomy in their hands.
Lucky patients could feel relief as their bodies reorganized
and reintegrated the structures and functions appropriate
to living, healthy anatomy at their particular stage of life.
Dr. Miller always asked for helpers – table trainers – as he
presented clinical approaches hand in hand with anatomy.
He demonstrated different areas each time depending on the
audience, and that is what we will do in this workshop as we
honor Dr. Miller with specifics in anatomy and practice.

C3/C4: Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound; Dr.
Pasquarello and Dr. Jorgensen
Description: Attendees will learn basic ultrasound
physics, operation of equipment and applications in
musculoskeletal medicine. The lecture will include a
review of normal anatomy and ultrasound appearance
of the shoulder. A review of ultrasound appearance of
common pathologies of the shoulder will also be discussed.
D3/D4:An Osteopathic Prospective of the Lymphatics;
Dr. Goldman
Description: This workshop will address the
osteopathic approach to the lymphatics to give those
attending a deeper palpatory sense of the flow of
the lymphatics and demonstrate the importance of
lymphatic function in human health.
E3/E4: Fluid/Cellular Interface; Dr. Fendall
Description: This workshop will explore how to
access fluid exchange across the tissue layers using
OMT. It will demonstrate how to enhance therapeutic
change by encouraging improved circulation to all
regions, also achieving adequate lymphatic and venous
drainage. Emphasis will be on how to practically approach
this clinically. It will also assist physicians with how to access
“the physician within” their patients by enabling deeper
palpation and using more meaningful hand contact.
F3/F4: The Fluid Nature of the Living Human System:
Intra-vascular, Extra-vascular, Interstitial; Dr.
Hankinson
Description: This workshop will explore the
principles of fluid physiology in the development
and maintenance of the living human body’s form
and function; the involuntary mechanisms of motion
in all living systems; and the homeodynamic mechanism
of growth and development and healing. Participants will
learn how to apply these principles in the diagnosis and
management of unresolved healing processes in the living
human mechanism- affording their patients a valuable
alternative method to regaining their original state of
balance, integration and health.
G4: Component Society Forum; Dr. Coffey
Description: AAO Component Society leaders are
invited to this unstructured discussion forum with AAO
President-Elect David Coffey, DO, FAAO. The objective
is to promote cooperation and collaboration in an effort to
better serve AAO members’ needs.

Description: This workshop will present a nonHVLA approach to treatment of the first rib and
self-treatment of thoracic kyphosis.
C5/C6: EMF as an Approach; Dr. Lossing
Description: In this lab, participants will palpate
temperature changes and other electromagnetic
field changes associated with somatic dysfunction.
They will also explore the change in the electromagnetic
field when somatic dysfunction is treated. Time permitting,
participants will try to make a distinction between
emotional projections and mechanical projections.
D5/D6: Primary Respiration in Interstitium; Dr. Lee
Description: This workshop will cover details of the
production of Tide in Tissues and how it generates
from the Breath of Life, including physiology of
ground substance; ion and electron flows, viscosity
and free water; echanotransduction; and lymphatics.
E5/E6: Exploring the Interaction Between the
Attitude of the Clinician and the Physiology
of the Patient; Dr. Turner
Description: In the spirit of cooperative inquiry, this
workshop will seek to explore how the practice of
Goethe's scientific method of inquiry into natural
phenomena may be of value in taking our osteopathic
diagnosis and treatment to deeper levels.

Description: To provide an annual course in faculty
development for educators in the osteopathic
profession to promote osteopathic principles and
practices. Provide a program for the creation of curriculum
to provide the foundations of medical and osteopathic
science, as well as practice to learners. Participants will be
able to discuss the components of a curriculum; develop
curriculum goals and learning objectives; apply a model
for curriculum and instructional design to integrate the
osteopathic concept; review core concepts in successfully
teaching procedural skills; discuss unique considerations in
procedural skill acquisition when applied to Neuromuscular
Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine; and
implement specific teaching techniques to improve the
learner’s ability to understand specific Osteopathic

Description: Participants will be able to develop and
focus multiple choice question item concepts; create
realistic and purposeful test item stems; write a precise,
clear and challenging lead-in; become interested in takehome exercises on constructing attractive and plausible

answer options; become inspired to volunteer to write items
for resident in-service examinations, board certification

Changing Reimbursement Environment; Dr.

Description: While we continue to provide the same
excellent osteopathic care, payers—both federal and
private—continue to try to marginalize and isolate
doctors around the country. Learn the facts, rules and
methods to ensure proper documentation, correct code
combinations, modifier utilization and what to do when you
are denied payment and told the payer is ‘following national
policy guidelines.’ Repetition builds skill and perfecting your
documentation and coding game is paramount whether
employed or self-employed.

The Osteopathic Diagnosis & Treatment Education
(OD&TE) service will be offered during Convocation
from 9:00 am to 11:30 am and 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm on
Thursday, March 22; from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Friday, March 22; and 9:00
am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 23. The OD&TE
service is provided for educational purposes only and
not for medical treatment. Your friends, colleagues, and
students will appreciate any time you can donate. In
addition, physicians receive a 1/2 Category 1-B AOA
CME credit for each person they treat!
The OD&TE service will have a drawing at noon
on Saturday. For every person a physician treats during
OD&TE hours, his/her name will be added to the
drawing (e.g., 25 patients, 25 chances to WIN). The
prize is a complimentary registration for the 2014
Convocation in Colorado Springs, CO.
We encourage volunteers to invite students to
observe their techniques. However, the decision to allow
others to be present during treatment sessions belongs
to you and your educational subject. As always, thank

If you pre-register for Convocation, your complete
registration packet will be availabe for pickup at the AAO
registration desk beginning at 10:00 am on Wednesday,
March 20. Daily registration hours are from 10:00 am to
6:00 pm on Wednesday, March 20, and from 7:30 am to 4:00
pm Thursday, March 21 and Friday, March 22.
Meals
Registration fee includes entrance to the Opening
Reception, (1) President’s Banquet and (1) Business
Meeting Luncheon. Physicians will be responsible for
their own lunch on Friday and Saturday; students will
be responsible for lunch on Thursday and Saturday.
Rosen Shingle Creek offers a wide selection of dining
options. It is strongly recommended that you make
dinner reservations well in advance of Convocation if
you wish to dine at a specific restaurant on a specific
night. For meals sponsored by the AAO, every attempt to
meet participants’ dietary needs will be made. However,
we cannot guarantee to satisfy all requests.

The mission of the American Academy of Osteopathy
Mentor Program (AAO-MP) is to provide guidance and
leadership to Student American Academy of Osteopathy
members. The program was designed to help address
the lack of osteopathic-specific education during clinical
years and beyond by:
• Reaching out to osteopathic medical students
early in their careers and providing a positive
influence on their future as an osteopathic
physician; and
• Helping provide educational and career
guidance during the OMS II and OMS III years
when choosing hospital sites for rotations,
advice on residency selection and, ultimately,
how the osteopathic philosophy can be
incorporated into all aspects of medicine.
Every osteopathic student and physician is
strongly encouraged to participate in the AAO-MP. This
is an excellent opportunity for students to become
active proponents of Osteopathy and for physicians to
contribute to making the profession stronger.

As the new SAAO Executive Board begins preparing for the upcoming year, we hope you share our opinion that last
year’s Convocation in Louisville was a great experience. On the student side of the program, we were fortunate to be able
to learn directly from so many of you, as well as make contacts for upcoming rotations and residencies. Let me speak for
all of the students when I say “Thank you” for everything you contribute to making Convo one of the best experiences for
the students year after year. We thoroughly look forward to seeing all of you this upcoming year in sunny Orlando for
Convo 2013!
As much as we would like everyone to think Convo runs itself, the event would be completely lost if not for the guidance and selflessness of all of the physicians and AAO staff members. For that reason, we ask that you consider assisting

Presentation Competition. During this competition, students are given five minutes to present a case in
which they utilized OMM in a clinical setting to treat a patient.
Make a donation to help recognize the top six presenters in the A. Hollis Wolf Case Presentation Competition.
Become a preceptor for the Vicki Dyson Scholarship Program, in which third- and fourth-year students
at each osteopathic school have the chance to win a scholarship for participating in an approved NMM/
OMM elective rotation.
Be a “Star” at the annual “Evening with the Stars” events during Convocation. Not only will you be able
to pass on your knowledge and skills to the next generation of physicians, but you can also earn CME
credit!
Participate in the SAAO auction, either as a bidder or a donor of products or services. Past donations
have included osteopathic heritage/collector’s items, osteopathic medical school paraphernalia or
dinner with a physician. Any donated items are greatly appreciated, and will be displayed at the SAAO
booth in the Exhibit Hall prior to the auction.

AGREEMENT
Loan of personal treatment table in exchange for reduced convocation registration fee
The undersigned STUDENT has applied to the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) for reduced tuition at the 2013 AAO
Convocation in Orlando, FL, in return for the AAO’s use of a personal, portable treatment table throughout the course of the
event.
The STUDENT agrees to the following terms:
1.The STUDENT will deliver the portable treatment table (without carrying case) to the AAO’s Convocation office
no later than 7:00 pm local time on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. The STUDENT understands that registration
materials will be withheld until the table is delivered. Otherwise, the AAO will require an additional $50.00 registration
fee from the STUDENT.
2.The STUDENT will permanently mark the portable treatment table with identification to permit both the STUDENT
and AAO to confirm ownership of the table.
3.The STUDENT agrees to allow the AAO to use the portable treatment table at the AAO’s discretion throughout the
course of the Convocation until 1:00 pm local time on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at which time the STUDENT will
retrieve the portable treatment table from the AAO Staff.
The AAO agrees to the following:
1. The AAO allow the STUDENT to register for the 2013 AAO Convocation at the student registration rate reduced by $50.00.
3. The AAO will release the portable treatment table to the STUDENT in an area that will be determined at the time of registration between the hours of 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm local time on Saturday, March 23, 2013.
2. The AAO will exercise responsible care for the protection of the STUDENT’s portable treatment table. However, the STUDENT, upon signing this agreement, expressly releases the AAO from any and all claims for loss, damage, or injury.
