THE HEAD’S DESK
Dear Parents
Teen years are a difficult time for parents as well as children. Nothing prepares one for a pouting, crying,
argumentative, hormonally charged teen. Given a job description for raising a child few would voluntarily take on the
24/365 responsibility however it is immensely pleasurable and rewarding. Recently I read an article on the role parents
play in the lives of teens; it identified parents as teachers, coaches, cheerleaders, guides, advocates and disciplinarians.
http://parentingteens.about.com/od/familylife/fl/The-6-Major-Roles-Parents-Play-in-the-Lives-of-Teens.htm. The
least heralded, most time consuming but most appreciated role is that of a cheerleader.
Witnessing parents working behind the scenes serving food and decorating venues or biting their nails as they hold
themselves back from joining their girls on the sports pitch or stage, or watching them receive prizes I am struck by
their wholehearted support. As one mother assured me whilst cheering loudly every time her daughter’s team played,
she only had a limited time left in which she could be present to observe her daughter first hand and she intended to
continue storing the memories and enjoying this time in her daughter’s life as much as possible. Her immense
pleasure, win or lose, in her daughter and the team’s performance was visible (and audible). Her daughter like most
teens was a mixture, in equal portions, of resigned embarrassment and visible pride but she no doubt performs better
knowing her principal cheerleader is present. To the few parents who turn up at all hours and do whatever is required
to urge the school on, your support and valuable time are greatly appreciated. We all acknowledge that time is a
precious commodity that can never be regained however the seemingly insignificant occasions spent with your daughter
watching the school play or a sport, eating meals together and discussing the day are the times she will remember as the
most important in her life as the focus is on her. It is during these times that she will open up to you and help you learn
about her world.
Referencing her world, please exercise vigilance with respect to your daughters’ use of social media sites and web
pages. What they may think is innocent invites comment from some unsavoury characters and could result in your
daughters being victimised or publicly abused and ridiculed. Their images and comments once posted may be ‘hidden’
but can never be deleted and may in future years come back to haunt them. Social media whilst being of immense
benefit in connecting people has unfortunately increased the ease with which individuals can be bullied and ‘friends’
whose identities remain unknown (catfishes) cannot always be relied upon to portray themselves as they really are.
Cyberbullying is rife as posts can go viral within hours thus increasing negative exposure and burdening our young who
are trying to chart their path through the sensitive adolescent years. I can only urge you to help your child compliment
their academic performance by being their main cheerleader as they explore other aspects of life.
On Tuesday we watched the Allied Arts Speech and Drama Festival highlights and were greatly entertained by the
dramatic ability of the performers. ‘Treading the boards’ may not be their chosen career however their talents when
provided with an outlet give them the opportunity to shine and provide pleasure for others. The benefits to the actors
are numerous: self confidence, problem solving, self discipline, trust, improved memory and aesthetic appreciation to
name a few.
Entrance Assessment Day last month saw us accommodate over 230 students keen to come to Arundel next year. Their
apprehensive faces reminded us all of the weight on these young shoulders as they face their first public examination.
The standards were commendably high and the successful candidates will return for an Orientation Day mid next term
where we will meet with them and start the transition process from junior to senior school. The frenzied activity of the
day was closely followed by the deafening silence, louder even than that heard at performances and sporting events,

that marks the examination period as everyone knuckled down, put aside their co-curricular activities and focused
purely on their academic performance. The tension was palpable both in the examination rooms and in the staff rooms.
Hearing the return of the chatter and vibrancy once the week was over underlined everyone’s determination to
succeed.
Our recent performance at Golden Girls on and off the pitches was a delight to behold. 21 teams competed and our 1st
team played with determination but unfortunately were not able to bring home the trophy. They are commended for
their skilled hockey coupled with enthusiasm and determination at the culmination of a very successful season. The
camaraderie shown by all the teams and team picture with 4 of the original 1980 Golden Girls made for an exciting
tournament. The APA soldiered away following numerous meetings and I’d like to express my gratitude to Mercy
Msipa and her able committee as well as all the Form 1 parents who were drafted in to provide refreshments and man
(or woman) the various duties. The students and staff turned out in force and though we are merely hosts of this event,
the Sports Department pulled off this pinnacle of girl’s school hockey magnificently.
Arundel hosts the Combined Schools Choir at 6.30pm on 17 September 2015 for the first time since 2002. The
concert features music and singing from 15 schools and is a celebration of talent this year under the overall direction of
our Music Director, Mrs Moyo. The Arundel family and friends are invited to turnout in large numbers to support
both Arundel and the continuation of music in our schools. Tickets, a mere $5.00 for an evening of entertainment, are
on sale at school and will be available at the door.
There is a depressing quantity of items being brought into the school without labels then reported as ‘stolen’ when the
owner has no means of identifying their carelessly misplaced item. Lost Property also has items that have not been
reclaimed however as these are eventually passed on to the Thrift Shop, there is a positive aspect for the school. All
items of clothing, stationery or other belongings must be labelled or they will find their way to the Thrift Shop.
Clothing labels (or their stitching) should not be visible and if your daughter has a locker please ensure that she has a
lock.
Please note that the school has strict regulations as to how hair may be worn. All students are also expected to have
natural eyebrows for the duration of their time at Arundel; shaving of the eyebrows is a violation of the school dress
code. Braids when worn should not be ‘box’ braids nor should any extensions be beyond regulation length. All braids
must fit comfortably inside the swimming cap and be tied at the nape of the neck with no wisps interfering with vision.
The gratifying result of less variety in style and colour as uniform purchases are made from a sole supplier is becoming
visible. Thank you all for your cooperation.
Parents, please do not arrive late at school then place the blame for your tardiness on the Prefects and guards. Arrival
at the gate after 7.20am means your daughter is already late for Form Time irrespective of whether or not you try to
race past the Prefects on Gate Duty and means you are endangering the lives of our students. The speed limit in the
school is 20kph; please adhere to it. Some students are regularly absent from school often without any notification from
their parents. On return to school a note explaining the absence and signed by the parent/guardian must be handed
into Reception for each unforeseen absence and a sick note from a doctor is required after two days’ continuous
absence.
In conjunction with the Environment and Wildlife Club the Estates department has designed a Grey Water filtration
system that is storing water from the kitchens in the Pond. The system once fully developed will be supplied with
water from the bathrooms (not sewage), the boarding houses and the roofs to both help preserve the water table and
the boost the aesthetic quality of the grounds. The Pond is being stocked with fish and will become a sanctuary for
birdlife attracting more varieties to complement our nesting kestrels, visiting fish eagles and other avian species.

Fitness is a goal to which we should all aspire so to promote and maintain healthy lifestyles and so each term every
student will be required to meet the cross country/athletics standards. The Fitness Club will help those who need
extra assistance in reaching the goal. This drive towards better health is one in which you as parents can assist your
daughter by ensuring that she is urged to keep fit over the holidays thus making it easier for her to maintain and
improve the levels that she achieves during the school term. The benefits of exercise are myriad as a fit and healthy
body reduces sickness related absences and thus will assist your daughter to achieve her potential.
Mrs Julia Wharton leaves us this term. Mrs Wharton has led the Drama department over the past two years producing
Cats and this year A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Her dedication and ability to bring out the thespian talents of the
students and open them to new challenges will be sorely missed and we wish her the very best and Godspeed as she
joins the teaching department of a school in her native America. It is also with regret that the resignations of Mordecai
Mahlangu, Rafe Wetzler and Stella Nhari were accepted at the recent Board of Trustees AGM. Mr Rafael Ranganayi
proffered his services and was welcomed onto the Board. The dedication of the voluntary Board members is
commended.
On a final note once again please do not leave it until the first day or week of school to settle your school fees or try to
make arrangements. The school is open for the rest of this week then closed from 10-14 August. A skeleton admin
staff returns on 17 August between 8.00am and 2.30pm. Full admin resumes on 31 August should you wish to make
an appointment to see me that week. Form Time marks the start of the term and students arriving at various points
during the morning or parents requiring meetings is disruptive for all concerned so please ensure that your
daughter arrives at school on the first day of term with her clearance note as no fee related issue will
be attended to that week.
I hope you all have a productive holiday period.

Term Two Highlights 2015
Arundel Drama ushered in the second term with much excitement around this year's production of Shakespeare's “A
Midsummer Night's Dream”. The cast, stage managers, backstage crew and make up artists worked hard during the
April holiday, preparing for our performances at the Harare International Festival of the Arts. We gave two
outstanding performances during the festival, which attracts artists from all over the world. Our second
performance was sold out just a few hours after our first performance!
We then prepared for four more performances here at school, adding in our own light and sound and front of house
crews. Audiences loved the show and we felt we fulfilled our mission to show just how fun Shakespeare can be.
As soon as the 'Midsummer' production ended, Arundel Drama began preparing for the National Institute of Allied
Arts Speech and Drama Festival. Arundel made a very strong showing. We had 43 performance pieces entered and
Arundel brought home 7 Honours, 24 Firsts and 12 Seconds. We presented pieces of poetry, mime, improvisation,
monologues, duologues, Shakespeare and group scenes and we had students from all grade levels representing
Arundel. What was especially remarkable about these successes was that the participating students were also
preparing for exams!
The term included the IGCSE Drama Written Exam in early May and finished up with the IGCSE Drama students
completing their Practical Exam. These students each prepared and performed three pieces of extremely varied
dramatic material. IGCSE Drama is a rigorous course which develops all kinds of skills in high demand in the 21st
Century work place – creative problem solving, critical thinking, articulate communication, productive teamwork
and more.
Arundel Drama has enjoyed getting to know Ms. Chikara, who will be taking over as Head of the Drama
Department in Term Three. And it was fun to welcome back Ms. Munyaradzi Guramatunhu, who helped out in
many, many ways while back home on 'summer' vacation from university in Canada.
It has been an honour and pleasure to share these two years with the staff and students of Arundel. I leave a better
teacher and better person for having worked and played with so many remarkable people!

lower 6 GRAHAMSTOWN ARTS TOUR
A couple weeks ago, seventeen lower six Literature,
Drama and Art students, accompanied by Mrs Fick and
Miss Bell, went on the annual Grahamstown Arts Tour
from the 11 July to the 18 July. The National Schools
Festival of the Arts in Grahamstown, South Africa, is a
five day festival. It is hosted at Rhodes University by
the National Schools Arts Foundation, and brings
together hundreds of South African Grade 12s (and a
few Zimbabwean Lower Sixes) to participate in an
intensely structured week of workshops, lectures,
productions and shows all presented by internationallyrecognised experts in their fields of theatre, writing,
film, journalism, music, dance, and art.
Here is one student's perspective of the tour.
the full artsy experience; we saw theatre production
after theatre production that took our breath away,
workshops that inspired us to get our creative juices
flowing, poetry slams that inspired our poetic justice,
lectures that provoked us to think and music that
flowed through us. We shared unforgettable memories.
We shared laughs, cries, moans, groans, sighs, long
nights, tired eyes, tardy bus drivers and jam-packed, icy
-cold days. And when we returned, we came home
exhausted and bogged down with the flu, absolutely
miserable. But the misery didn’t matter. It didn’t
matter not because we were home; but because we
returned with our eyes a little bit more open, our
voices louder and our minds freer.
Don’t dream it. Be it.
Aalia Hussein
The annual Grahamstown tour could not have come at
a better time. It brought the start of an exciting festival
with the end of a horrid week of exams. So we set off
excited but tired, restless energy humming in our
bones. Once we had finally arrived, we were greeted
by this year’s festival slogan, "Don’t dream it. Be it."
And that’s exactly what we tried to do. Instead of
dreaming of studying the arts, we became arts’
student, albeit temporarily (just for a week). We had

CHRISTIAN GROUP
This year we decided to combine with Prince Edward Christian Group to make an impact in our community. We
did the Girl to Girl Project whilst Prince Edward did a Boy to Boy Project at Rugare Children's Home. We
appreciate all the generous contributions the girls made in order for us to achieve this. We collected hundreds of
sanitary towels and other items including bibles, stationary and clothes. We spent the afternoon with the children
and played games with them in order to bond.

INTERACT VISIT TO CROWHILL PRIMARY
The Interact Club hosted the Annual Staff Braai on the
26th of June to show our appreciation for all the work
they do around the school and decided to set a date where
we would serve them. It was a delightful day as we all
enjoyed each others company and especially the food that
the Interact girls prepared so well.
Crowhill Primary School is our long term project
because we believe everyone deserves an education.
We visited the school to familiarise ourselves with the
children and to get an idea of some of the challenges
they might be facing. We have been fundraising for
orphan's school fees and collecting books for their
library and class.
INTERACT SERVICE
This term we visited Westreign Old People's Home to spend time with them and donate blankets, socks and cakes
to share. It's amazing how the smallest things you do for a person can occupy the biggest part of their hearts. It was
a heartfelt visit and we would definitely like to spend more time with them in the near future.

BROOKER TROPHY
The Arundel 1st Team played Chisipite in the annual Brooker Trophy match on Thursday 25 June. This was an
extremely exciting and tense match that saw Arundel come back from 2-0 down, with a well worked short-corner goal
put away by Tina Elijah, and an equalising goal, again scored by Tina, with 23 second left on the clock! This resulted in
a 2-2 draw at full time. The match then went into 7 ½ minutes extra time, and then into an additional 7 ½ minutes
extra time- golden goal in which no goals were scored. The match decider was a penalty shootout, where Sarah Geach,
Stephanie Mauchaza, Kate Lavers and Sharon Kareke proved too much for the Chisipite goalkeeper. Arundel scored all
4 of their shootouts whilst Arundel’s goalkeeper, Michelle Mashange, performed exceptionally well in denying
Chisipite all but 1 goal. This left the final score at 6-3 to Arundel.
The whole team is commended for an exceptional performance throughout the match and for never giving up or losing
faith. The last time Arundel won the Brooker Trophy was in 2012, so it gives us great pleasure to win it back again!
Well done to the First Team players, and a big thank-you to all the girls who gave up their time to support the team.

Golden and silver girls hockey tournament
The Golden and Silver Girls Hockey Tournament was once again hosted by Arundel this year, from the 31st of August to the 2nd
September. It was a fantastic tournament that exhibited Arundel’s adeptness at organisation, with the Arundel Sports
Department, Grounds and Estates Team, the Arundel Parents Association, The First Aid Club and all the girls, staff and parents of
Arundel, pulling together to produce a truly outstanding display of teamwork that drew many positive reflections on our amazing
school. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those who contributed to make this tournament such a resounding success.
Our 1st Team Hockey’s skill and solidarity on the field was shown once again through some exceptional hockey, continuing their
formidable form from their season, where they finished 3rd in the A league, into the tournament where they finished a
commendable 6th place out of 12 schools overall. In the pool games, Arundel played 5 matches, winning 2, drawing 2 and losing
1, which placed us 3rd overall in the pool, only 2 points behind Hellenic. This saw us play Girls College for 5th or 6th place, where
we narrowly lost 1-0 in an extremely close match. Well done to all the girls who undoubtedly did Arundel proud and we look
forward to next year’s performance in this prestigious tournament.
