CONDUCTS CHORAL
MASTERPIECES
We couldn’t celebrate 125
years of great music without
the wonderful singers of the
RSNO Chorus. Music Director
Peter Oundjian directs three
large-scale choral masterpieces
throughout the Season. Make
sure you don’t miss Mahler’s
Resurrection Symphony,
Vaughan Williams’ Sea
Symphony and Beethoven’s
Ninth Symphony Choral, which
brings the first half of our
birthday celebrations to a close.
BIRTHDAY BOYS:
PROKOFIEV AND
PORTER
The RSNO isn’t alone
celebrating 125 years
of glorious music. Sergei
Prokofiev and Cole Porter were
also born in 1891 and so we’ll
be sharing some of their finest
music with you across the
Season. Prokofiev’s Cinderella
and Romeo and Juliet both
feature, and we’re especially
thrilled that Nikolai Lugansky
is joining us to perform all five
of Prokofiev’s piano concertos
across the 15:16 and 16:17
Seasons. Plus, don’t miss our
Cole Porter Anniversary Gala
concert in May, featuring many
of his greatest hits including
Night and Day, I Get a Kick Out
of You and Begin the Beguine.

THE STRAVINSKY
PROJECT
WELCOME RETURN
Igor Stravinsky – one of the
most important composers of
the 20th century – is on the
RSNO party guest list with a
special two-part celebration
showcasing some of his
greatest works. Join Principal
Guest Conductor Thomas
Søndergård as he explores two
different sides to this iconic
composer, focusing on his
finest neo-classical works
and his infamous ballet,
The Rite of Spring (see p15).
STÉPHANE
DENÈVE
We’re delighted to welcome
some familiar faces to join in
our birthday celebrations! This
Season, Alexander Lazarev
(Principal Conductor 1997–
2005) and Stéphane Denève
(Music Director 2005–2012)
return with two programmes
they are passionate about;
Lazarev with a full-blooded
Russian evening, and Monsieur
Denève with music from his
native France. RSNO favourites
Nicola Benedetti, Steven
Osborne and Vilde Frang
also return, performing
music by Szymanowski,
Ravel and Brahms.
Musical insights
Join us at 6.45pm before each concert for our
pre-concert talks and get an insider’s view on
the works being performed. Look out for the
symbol
throughout the brochure.
ARTISTS IN FOCUS
This Season we’re delighted to
welcome our special Artists in
Focus: pianists Nikolai Lugansky
and Boris Giltburg join us for
two concerts each performing
concertos by Prokofiev and
Rachmaninov, while violist
Brett Dean and pianist Dejan
Lazić take on the special role
of composer as performer. Plus
don’t miss the opportunity
to hear Boris Giltburg and
Brett Dean up close as they
join RSNO musicians in our
Chamber Series (see p29).
CREATING A NEW
LEGACY
2016 sees the Scottish
premieres of two exciting
new commissions by
Scottish composer James
MacMillan: Little Mass,
for children’s chorus and
orchestra, co-commissioned
by the RSNO with the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic and
Bournemouth Symphony
Orchestras, and The Death of
Oscar, a miniature tone poem,
co-commissioned by the RSNO
with Stuttgart Radio and
Seattle Symphony Orchestras.

Dear Friends
Welcome to the RSNO’s 2015:16 Season!
This is a particularly special time for the
Orchestra and I feel incredibly privileged to be
here to share it with you. Across this Season
and the next we will be celebrating the
Orchestra’s 125th anniversary. 125 years is
a great achievement, and we simply couldn’t
have made it this far without your support –
thank you. Not only have we programmed a
special Season to mark the occasion, but we
are also very much looking forward to moving
into our new purpose-built home at the
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
We have some spectacular concerts planned
over the coming months and a host of
international artists coming to join us. You’ll
be spoilt for choice! From Mahler’s epic
Resurrection Symphony to Beethoven’s Ninth,
this Season is packed with wonderful music,
old and new.
I hope you enjoy browsing the brochure and
choosing your concerts – there’s so much to
look forward to in our anniversary year.

When a composer asks for
his music to be played ‘with
passion and desire’, you know
you’re in for the ride of your life!
Pounding with emotion and
bursting with unforgettable
tunes, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth

romantic as music gets, and
Peter Oundjian and the RSNO
will live every note. First,

in person – as Brett Dean

your feet tapping with his own
folk-inspired opener before
lavishing heart and soul on the
moonlit romance of Chopin’s
teenage concerto.

Two composers, both alike
in dignity…and two gloriously
tuneful takes on Shakespeare’s
greatest love story. Tchaikovsky’s
Romeo and Juliet is the epitome
of Romantic music, while
Sergei Prokofiev brought the
star-crossed lovers to the
USSR and gave us some of the
20th century’s most heartfelt
melodies. Peter Oundjian lavishes
real feeling on the first of our
birthday salutes to Prokofiev,

popular demand – is sure to
strike sparks off Khachaturian’s

Rachmaninov’s Second is

it’s the passionate heart of
a Valentine’s concert that’s
much more than just a brief

sends a tender love letter to his
beautiful young wife; under the
blue skies of Italy, Tchaikovsky
dreams of dark eyes and
scented nights; and in Richard
Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, a
silver rose is the key to love at
first sight. If music is the food

SIR ALEXANDER GIBSON
Early conductors included
such eminent names as Felix
Weingartner, Vaclav Talich
and George Szell, and the
young John Barbirolli became
Principal Conductor in 1933, in
one of his earliest conducting
posts. The Orchestra
performed at the inaugural
Edinburgh International
Festival in 1947 under
conductor Walter Susskind,
and was renamed the Scottish
National Orchestra in 1950,
the year it also became
a permanent, year-round
ensemble.
The figure with arguably the
profoundest influence on the
Orchestra, and on Scottish
musical life in all its richness,
was Sir Alexander Gibson,
Principal Conductor for a
remarkable 25 years from
1959 to 1984, and responsible
for pioneering Sibelius
performances, founding
the influential Musica Nova
contemporary music festival,
and acclaimed tours of Europe
and North America.
The Orchestra has taken
Scotland’s finest music making
to international audiences
since its earliest days – its
first tour (of the Netherlands)
was in 1896, and as recently
as 2012–13 it took Scottish
Hogmanay celebrations to
China under current Music
Director Peter Oundjian.

USA TOUR OF 1975
The RSNO has a long history of
acclaimed recordings, among
them many under Neeme

1984 to 1988, and an awardwinning CD set of Debussy
orchestral music under Music
Director Stéphane Denève in
2012, the same year that the
Orchestra’s Astar CD was given
to every child born in Scotland.
Eminent film composer Elmer
Bernstein’s 1997 recording of
his score to The Great Escape
with the RSNO – one of the
Orchestra’s many discs of
film music – confirmed the
Orchestra’s status as a worldclass film music ensemble.

In 2015, the Royal Scottish
National Orchestra marks
another milestone in its history,
moving into its purpose-built
new home at the Glasgow

new home will provide the
Orchestra with a world-class
rehearsal space and a new
learning and engagement
centre, enabling the RSNO
to connect with audiences
in new ways and continue to
deliver exceptional musical
performances.
With a new home and some of
the world’s finest musicians,
the Orchestra looks forward to
the next 125 years of taking
exceptional music making right

uncover the minds behind
the music.
There’s more to classical music than meets the
ear. Delve beneath the glorious sound of a full
orchestra, and what you find are stories of the

soaring dreams and epic thrills. In this new series
of exclusive concerts, presenter Sandy Burnett and
the Royal Scottish National Orchestra invite you into
their rehearsal studio for an evening of interviews,
conversation and, of course, live orchestral music.
These unique events will uncover the fascinating
stories behind the music, exploring the public history
and the private passions that shaped some of music’s
most famous creative minds.
With only a limited number of seats available in the
RSNO’s new auditorium, this is a rare opportunity to
go behind the scenes with your national orchestra.

Few composers’ lives are more
tangled up with their music
than Tchaikovsky’s – and
few have a more compelling
story to tell. Sandy Burnett,
Peter Oundjian and the full
RSNO explore the myths, the
secrets and the facts that lie
beneath the notes of some
of the best-loved music in his
repertoire, using works from
his symphonies, the ballets and
Romeo and Juliet to reveal the
real Tchaikovsky, as artist and
man.
Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring
detonated a revolution in
modern music – and we’re still
feeling the aftershock. Ahead
of their performance in The
Stravinsky Project, Thomas
Søndergård and the RSNO join
Sandy Burnett to get under the
skin of Stravinsky the man, to
explore the colourful creative
world in which he worked,
and to use music from The
Rite and his other great ballet
scores to tell the hidden story
of the 20th century’s defining
composer.

When Mozart made music with
friends, he chose to play the
viola. Two centuries on, it just
so happens that one of the
most engaging composers of
our own time is also a terrific
viola player. Brett Dean joins
a line-up of RSNO players in
his own, poignant Epitaphs,
and then stays around for
Mozart’s glorious C major
Quintet: Amadeus at his
most expansive, personal and
inspired. And best of all – you

‘Outstanding’, ‘world class’,
‘sublimely assured artistry’:
critics are falling over
themselves to acclaim pianist
Boris Giltburg. So we’re thrilled
that he’s agreed to join us
for a spot of chamber music.
And we’re even more thrilled
that he’s chosen to play César
Franck’s extraordinary Piano
Quintet. This is chamber music
at its most uninhibited; grand,
virtuosic and so passionate
that some Victorian audiences
considered it improper! Two
irresistibly tuneful Dvořák
favourites launch the afternoon
with a swing.

Serenade for Wind, Cello and
Double Bass in D minor
Urban music: classical style.
The origins of Mozart’s C minor
Serenade are shrouded in
mystery – wind groups of the
time usually played outdoors
to a raucous crowd, but the
surprisingly dark shadows in
this stunning piece suggest
another purpose. A century
later, Dvořák saluted Mozart
with a wind serenade that
simply bubbles with joy.
Today, an ensemble of RSNO
musicians will conjure up the
images of Bohemia’s woods

As an aspiring violinist, the experience
I had in the RSNO Takeover was second

believe it was being offered to me! The most
inspiring part for me was playing in the
