Pounding with emotion and bursting with unforgettable tunes, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is quite simply as romantic as music gets, and Peter Oundjian and the RSNO will live every note. First, though, hear from a composer in person – as Brett Dean plays his own magical Viola Concerto – and saddle up with Borodin’s Prince Igor Overture: swashbuckling, Russian-style! Katherine Wren (RSNO Viola) in conversation with Brett Dean Thomas Søndergård CONDUCTOR Dejan Lazić PIANO It’s all about colour. Mussorgsky painted musical pictures of witches, gnomes and chickens dancing in their shells; Ravel drenched them in sparkling colours to create one of the best-loved of all orchestral showpieces. Under RSNO Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Søndergård, Pictures at an Exhibition will leave your ears tingling – and ‘powerhouse performer’ Dejan Lazić will get your feet tapping with his own folk-inspired opener before lavishing heart and soul on the moonlit romance of Chopin’s teenage concerto. William Chandler (RSNO Associate Leader) in conversation with Dejan Lazić ARTIST IN FOCUS: BRETT DEAN ‘Brett Dean’s Dispersal…certainly had the RSNO on the edge of their seats in this 0–100mph ride as they negotiated hair-pin rhythms and explosive bursts of percussion’ The Scotsman, May 2014 Don’t miss composer and performer Brett Dean this October as he performs his Viola Concerto and also joins RSNO musicians in a chamber performance of his composition Epitaphs (see p29). 7 rsno.org.uk/SEASON1516 ROMEO AND JULIET SAT 7 NOV 2015 : 7.30PM XIAYIN WANG Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy Khachaturian Piano Concerto Prokofiev Suite from Romeo and Juliet Peter Oundjian CONDUCTOR Xiayin Wang PIANO 6PM To Absent Friends Festival performance of new compositions by Glasgow school pupils Manus Carey (RSNO Executive Producer) in conversation with Peter Oundjian CRAIG SWINDELLS (RSNO STAGE MANAGER) River Tay, Perth 8 Two composers, both alike in dignity…and two gloriously tuneful takes on Shakespeare’s greatest love story. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet is the epitome of Romantic music, while Sergei Prokofiev brought the star-crossed lovers to the USSR and gave us some of the 20th century’s most heartfelt melodies. Peter Oundjian lavishes real feeling on the first of our birthday salutes to Prokofiev, while Xiayin Wang – back by popular demand – is sure to strike sparks off Khachaturian’s showstopping concerto. A warm, sunlit song of blue skies and majestic peaks, it’s tailor-made for the gorgeous sound and natural artistry of the young Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang. ‘Exquisite’ was how The Scotsman described her last visit to the RSNO, and Peter Oundjian has found the perfect complement for her performance: Webern’s ravishing Viennese love letter, and – maybe, just maybe – the most perfect symphony Mozart ever wrote. 9 rsno.org.uk/SEASON1516 JUN MÄRKL SAINT-SAËNS’ ORGAN SYMPHONY SAT 21 NOV 2015 : 7.30PM Liszt Les préludes Poulenc Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani Saint-Saëns Symphony No3 Organ Jun Märkl CONDUCTOR Thierry Escaich ORGAN Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony might be one of the world’s best-loved classics, but live in concert it’s even more thrilling. It’s an electrifying first-ever performance for the Royal Concert Hall’s superb new organ: you’ve simply got to hear it for yourself. First, though, the great French organist Thierry Escaich puts the new organ through its paces in Poulenc’s riproaring concerto, and Guest Conductor Jun Märkl whips up a storm in a stirring favourite by Saint-Saëns’ great friend Liszt. Katherine Wren (RSNO Viola) This concert is dedicated to The Merchants House of Glasgow and its benefactors for their support which has enabled the purchase of a new organ for the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. From the smouldering Spanish passions of The Three-Cornered Hat to Richard Strauss’ dangerously seductive Latin lover, this is music to lie back and bask in. Spanish conductor Jaime Martín is our tour guide, and the fabulous young Latvian violinist Baiba Skride is a very special guest – getting us on our way with Tchaikovsky’s irresistibly tuneful Violin Concerto. Gustav Mahler sends a tender love letter to his beautiful young wife; under the blue skies of Italy, Tchaikovsky dreams of dark eyes and scented nights; and in Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, a silver rose is the key to love at first sight. If music is the food of love, then this is a Michelinstarred banquet! Peter Oundjian CONDUCTOR Katherine Broderick SOPRANO Benedict Nelson BARITONE RSNO Chorus ‘Behold, the sea itself!’ A ringing fanfare, a mighty choral shout, and in a majestic surge of sound, Vaughan Williams’ First Symphony unfurls its sails. A Sea Symphony blew like a gust of fresh salt air through the world of British choral music – and it can still set your spine tingling. Soloists Katherine Broderick and Benedict Nelson join our superb RSNO Chorus – but not before Peter Oundjian and the RSNO have shared Debussy’s beautiful view from the other side of the Channel. Ursula Heidecker Allen (RSNO Violin) Carlos Miguel Prieto CONDUCTOR Boris Giltburg PIANO Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony begins in tragedy and ends with a circus parade, while Shchedrin’s outrageous Naughty Limericks gleefully pokes fun at the authorities. Guest Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto brings out the laughter – and tears – in both. And he joins the acclaimed Russianborn pianist Boris Giltburg in Rachmaninov’s mightiest of all Russian piano concertos: 45 minutes of deep poetry and dazzling heights. So we’re thrilled to welcome back this breathtaking young RussianGerman pianist in Mozart’s graceful, playful concerto: the polar opposite to Beethoven’s controlled explosion of an Eighth Symphony. RSNO Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Søndergård lights the fuse on that one – and there’s a special bonus as Levit, Søndergård and the RSNO indulge together in Szymanowski’s wonderfully decadent Fourth Symphony. The result? His astonishing Symphonie fantastique – a wild-eyed, opium-fuelled blockbuster that still sets hairs on end today. With Peter Oundjian at the helm, a specially-written choral work by one of Scotland’s greatest living composers sung by the RSNO Junior Chorus, and the nation’s favourite Nicola Benedetti playing Szymanowski’s sensuous, shimmering concerto, this is a special 125 performance not to be missed. The RSNO’s Bolshoi-trained Conductor Emeritus Alexander Lazarev brings out the gypsy in Rachmaninov, and launches our anniversary cycle with Prokofiev’s rarely heard Fourth Concerto. It’s insanely difficult, but don’t worry: Nikolai Lugansky could play it with one hand behind his back! Ursula Heidecker Allen (RSNO Violin) Supported by the Jennie S. Gordon Memorial Foundation NIKOLAI LUGANSKY Thomas Søndergård CONDUCTOR Franz Schubert filled his early symphonies with melody and charm. Igor Stravinsky took a very different approach, painting 20th century life in music of glittering colour and razor-sharp wit. As part of our anniversary Stravinsky Project, Thomas Søndergård brings the two together, and whether we’re relaxing in 19th century Vienna or speeding with Stravinsky down Hollywood Boulevard, one thing’s for sure: we’re in for some serious entertainment. Katherine Bryan (RSNO Principal Flute) in conversation with Thomas Søndergård This concert is dedicated to the Lillie Bequest Fund in honour of the RSNO Foundation Thomas Søndergård CONDUCTOR Stefan Jackiw VIOLIN When The Rite of Spring was premiered, it started a riot – and a century on, music is still reeling from the aftershock. Stravinsky’s explosive ballet score is the ultimate orchestral thriller, but the same electricity crackles through his jazzy Violin Concerto: Thomas Søndergård and the superb young American violinist Stefan Jackiw supercharge it tonight. First, though, Béla Bartók follows Stravinsky’s lead with a ballet so colourful, so powerful, and so downright outrageous that it was actually banned. Brace yourself! This latest instalment in Nikolai Lugansky’s Prokofiev concerto cycle should be a spectacular upbeat to Shostakovich’s huge Eighth Symphony. Forged in war and terror and banned by the Soviets, under Peter Oundjian you’ll hear why this ‘symphony of iron and steel’ is still one of 20th century music’s most overwhelming experiences. Katherine Wren (RSNO Viola) ARTIST IN FOCUS: NIKOLAI LUGANSKY ‘His performance blazes with conviction, a propulsion and energy finely complemented with an innate sense of poetry.’ Gramophone Join pianist Nikolai Lugansky and the RSNO on a musical journey as together they perform the complete cycle of Prokofiev’s piano concertos in our anniversary year. Sandy Burnett, Peter Oundjian and the full RSNO explore the myths, the secrets and the facts that lie beneath the notes of some of the best-loved music in his repertoire, using works from his symphonies, the ballets and Romeo and Juliet to reveal the real Tchaikovsky, as artist and man. Ahead of their performance in The Stravinsky Project, Thomas Søndergård and the RSNO join Sandy Burnett to get under the skin of Stravinsky the man, to explore the colourful creative world in which he worked, and to use music from The Rite and his other great ballet scores to tell the hidden story of the 20th century’s defining composer. Two centuries on, it just so happens that one of the most engaging composers of our own time is also a terrific viola player. Brett Dean joins a line-up of RSNO players in his own, poignant Epitaphs, and then stays around for Mozart’s glorious C major Quintet: Amadeus at his most expansive, personal and inspired. And best of all – you get to listen in! ‘Outstanding’, ‘world class’, ‘sublimely assured artistry’: critics are falling over themselves to acclaim pianist Boris Giltburg. So we’re thrilled that he’s agreed to join us for a spot of chamber music. And we’re even more thrilled that he’s chosen to play César Franck’s extraordinary Piano Quintet. This is chamber music at its most uninhibited; grand, virtuosic and so passionate that some Victorian audiences considered it improper! Two irresistibly tuneful Dvořák favourites launch the afternoon with a swing. Mozart Serenade No12 for Wind in C minor K388 Dvořák Serenade for Wind, Cello and Double Bass in D minor Urban music: classical style. The origins of Mozart’s C minor Serenade are shrouded in mystery – wind groups of the time usually played outdoors to a raucous crowd, but the surprisingly dark shadows in this stunning piece suggest another purpose. A century later, Dvořák saluted Mozart with a wind serenade that simply bubbles with joy. Today, an ensemble of RSNO musicians will conjure up the images of Bohemia’s woods and meadows in Cottier’s Theatre as part of The Cottier Chamber Project. the cottier chamber project 29 rsno.org.uk/engage engage RSNO INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION SEONA GLEN, RSNO TAKEOVER 2014: As an aspiring violinist, the experience I had in the RSNO Takeover was second to none.
